Don’t miss the free download below, perfect for the next time you share a quilt block with friends. Lindsay Conner is here today to share her new Modern Bee book!
It’s called Modern Bee— 13 Quilts to Make with Friends. I didn’t make this book alone, but with the creative help of 12 quilting bloggers I met online.
When we formed the Mod Stitches bee in late 2011 I had an idea to turn our bee into a book, and these ladies were adventurous enough to hop on board with my crazy idea!
The book follows our quilting journey, teaching readers how to make each of the blocks and finished quilts. The blocks are arranged from beginner to intermediate, and are perfect for building your skills throughout the year as you tackle more challenging blocks.
How it Works
If you’ve never been a part of a quilting bee, it typically works like this… Each month, one person designs a quilt block for the other members of the bee to make and return to them in the mail. At the end of that month, one quilter collects all the blocks and finishes the quilt. After 12 months, each bee member has not only built up their quilting skills with tips learned from their new friends, but they’ve had a hand in making each of the 12 quilts designed that year. Our bee worked the same way, though we also joined forces to make a 13th quilt to donate to charity.
If you don’t have a quilting bee and want to enjoy the book that’s perfectly okay! You can still make each of the 13 blocks and full quilts in Modern Bee whether you’re sewing on your own or with a group of friends. If you would like to give a virtual quilting bee a try, the book will give you some great tips and tricks for organizing your own group as well as troubleshooting any problems that might come up.
Free Printables: Quilt Block Labels
I’m happy to share a free download for you today, to help you in your next project sewing with friends! If you’ve ever participated in a bee, you know that it’s easy to get bee blocks mixed up when several arrive in the mail. It can be hard to keep them all straight, especially if you are in more than one bee at a time.
As a solution, my friend Mary designed these free printable quilt block labels, an exclusive download for Sew Mama Sew readers! They come four to a sheet, so just three sheets will get you through the entire year with your bee.
To use these labels, just slip one inside a plastic bag with your bee blocks (a great tip for protecting them from getting damaged in the mail). When you fill it out, the recipient knows who made the blocks, the date they were sent and the name of your bee. Download the free printables here!
