The Scandinavia collection is the newest palette of colors from Oakshott, makers of gorgeous shot cottons loved by sewists around the world. Shot cottons are woven with two different colors in the warp and weft giving the fabric a unique drape and depth of color.
- “For most of us, Scandinavian style conjures up clean, bright, airy colors. Warm, cosy interiors with earthy, neutral tones and layers of texture. In the long, dark Nordic winters, the home is a place of refuge. The dearth of natural light means Scandinavian interiors have come to rely on paler tones to combat winter darkness.
This is the inspiration behind Scandinavia, our newest palette of calm, muted tones. Vaporous blues, soft grays, milky whites and tones of woody shades capture and play with light in ways that will amaze. Our new Scandinavia collection recreates this palette. A subtle Flaxen White warp combines with eight different weft shades to produce our unique ‘shot’ effect– the Oakshott hallmark. Toning together, the colorways catch the light at different angles, creating an apparent depth not normally associated with quilting fabrics.”
We asked six challengers to show us their Scandinavian-inspired designs all sewn up in Oakshott Scandinavia! We’ll share the pretty results with you throughout the week, and we also have TWO fat quarter packs to give away during our challenge features! Your comment on any challenge post this week or next qualifies you to enter. Let us know what you love about each challenger’s work or what you will do with the pack if you win!
First up is Casey York from The Studiolo with her beautiful Gustavian Baby Quilt. Casey writes, “I put together a quick Pinterest board to highlight some of the the most relevant characteristics of the Gustavian style, as well as to help me gather inspiration for my Oakshott Challenge project. I had been wanting a chance to experiment with bias appliqué for a while, and the arms of an antique daybed sparked the perfect idea–a series of elegant ovals joined by petite rondels…”
See lots of photos and learn more about Casey’s process in her post at The Studiolo. (She’s also giving away some Oakshott on her site!) You also won’t want to miss the Winter Grove Pillow Casey shared with us to celebrate the launch of her Modern Appliqué Illusions: 12 Quilts Create Perspective & Depth book.
We’d like to thank our talented challengers for showing us so many lovely possibilities with Oakshott Scandinavia. Please visit their sites to see more creativity!:
