Our 2015 Reflections + 2016 Predictions series continues with Alex Veronelli. Alex is the Chief Business Development Officer at Aurifil, the popular Italian quilt, patchwork and embroidery cotton threads manufacturer.

Don’t miss a post! Here are thoughts from Sara Lawson of Sew Sweetness, Mandy Leins of Mandalei Quilts, Jenny Rushmore of Cashmerette and Sandi Sawa Hazlewood of Crafty Planner.

Sew Mama Sew: Looking back on the sewing scene in 2015, what trends stand out?
Alex: Trendy colors for sewing thread have been Light Grey and Ecru. These must have colors are timeless. Another noteworthy color trend was for the classic autumn colors, in different shades: brown, pine green and ocher.

SMS: Who knocked your socks off and why?
Alex: Mr. Mark Dunn at Moda Fabrics for his consistent, admirable activity both professionally and personally. I also found the Moda special exhibit at 2015 Fall Quilt Market & Festival to be quite breathtaking.

SMS: Favorite things? (Fabric collections, patterns, books, thread, tools, podcasts, classes, websites, events, etc.)
Alex: For 2015, the live video streaming app #Periscope has been one of the hottest cool tools! This app is suitable for all sewing audiences, for sharing special events and education in real time.

SMS: What do you think 2016 has in store?
Alex: Today’s market is consumer driven. The internet has created a more informed customer base. These savvy shoppers know what they want when they walk through the doors of a shop. Our goal is to help keep the local quilt shops and their customers up to date on every new trend as it happens.

SMS: Who do you think are raising stars in the industry?
Alex: I see an environment full of stars. This certainly supports a wealthy market, and it’s wonderful for everyone.

SMS: What did you do this year that you’re most proud of?
Alex: The business decision this past year was to continue to devote more time supporting Aurifil dealers. Local quilt shops are an active and productive part of our quilting community that possess a wealth of information. Being physically in the shops with the Aurifil lectures has given me the opportunity to see firsthand how these hardworking shops are manning the front lines.

SMS: What can we expect from you in 2016? Any big projects, life changes or goals you can share?
Alex: The serviceable goal will be to support a stable Aurifil infrastructure.
