Action Kivu Fundraiser
It’s time for the annual Action Kivu Fundraiser! Every year since inception, we’ve been honored to help promote this great cause, organized and supported by the sewing and quilting community. Action Kivu is a very small non-profit that Alissa Haight Carlton (Executive Director of the Modern Quilt Guild) and her sister Kate Haight became involved with in 2010. The program helps women and children who are victims of the conflict in Eastern Congo. The conflict in Congo has taken the lives of over 5.4 million people since 1998. Rape is used as a weapon of war, with estimates putting the number of rapes in the hundreds of thousands.
One of Action Kivu’s projects is a sewing workshop that teaches women to sew and provides them with a sewing machine, and thus a means of supporting their family. The $15,000 fund-raising goal this year will help fund 42 sewing machine kits!
