Crop tops are some of the fastest garments you can sew, which makes them a great first clothing project. I've collected 25 free patterns and tutorials here, from cropped tanks and halter necks to puff sleeves and shirred tube tops, at every skill level. If you want more choices beyond crops, I also keep a list of every perfect free top sewing pattern I'd recommend. Since every one here is free and most need under a yard of fabric, you can sew several without much outlay.
In the middle of summer, a light cotton or linen crop top is about the most comfortable thing you can wear, and sewing it yourself means you choose the fabric. Most of these take an afternoon. Once you've made one, you'll understand how the shaping works, and the next one goes much faster.

The list runs from a high-neck strappy crop and a fitted linen crop to a vintage-inspired summer top and a puff sleeve tie front. Several are refashions, so a shirt or an old pair of jeans can become something new. If you have a piece of fabric that's too pretty to throw away but too small for a dress, a crop top is exactly what to use it for.
How Short Should a Crop Top Be?
Length is the decision that makes or breaks a crop top, and it depends on what you'll wear underneath. With high-waisted jeans or skirts, I like the hem to sit right at the waistband or a finger's width above it, so just a sliver of skin shows when you move. With low-rise bottoms, that same top shows much more midriff, which may or may not be what you want.
Before cutting, I put on the bottoms I'll wear most often and mark the hem with a pin on an old t-shirt. That gives you the finished length. Then add your hem allowance, usually 1 to 2 cm, before marking the pattern.
Torso length matters too. If you're petite or short-waisted, many patterns already land near your waist without any shortening, so skip the trim and check first. Long-waisted and tall sewists usually need to add length, especially on fitted styles, where a few centimeters change everything.
- Shorter crops look best with high waists and fuller skirts.
- A crop that ends just at the natural waist is the easiest to wear with most bottoms.
- A boxy crop can be a little longer than a fitted one without losing the cropped look.
1. Making Tied Crop Top From a Shirt

Turning a button-up shirt into a tied crop top is the quickest project here. You need a denim button-up, a sewing machine, fabric scissors and a few pins. Cut the sleeves off, leaving 1 inch for seams, then tie the front tails in a knot. I'd try the shirt on and mark where you want the knot before cutting anything, because the tails need enough length to tie. abeautifulmess
2. High Neck Strappy Crop Top Pattern

This high-neck strappy crop pairs well with ripped jeans or a light skirt, and a floral print shows it off nicely. Cut the main body, loops and neck strap, then pin and sew following the instructions, leaving seam allowances as you go. A high neck draws attention to the shoulders, so it's a good choice if you like showing your arms. themodernmaker
3. Cropped Tie Front Top Sewing Pattern

The order of work on this tie front top is straightforward: cut out the pattern, join the bodice pieces, set in the sleeves, sew the side seams, then make the ties. I press the tie strips in half before turning them, which makes them much easier to turn with a safety pin. aimsysantics
4. Off the Shoulder Crop Top Pattern

An off-the-shoulder crop is easy to wear on a beach day. You need a soft drapey fabric, 4 m of elastic, a tape measure, scissors, pins, thread and a sewing machine. Cut the pieces, join them, then thread the elastic through the casing. Cut the neckline elastic a little shorter than your shoulder measurement so it grips without digging in. collectivegen
5. Free Crop Top Sewing Pattern

This printable PDF makes a neutral crop that works for a dinner out or a casual evening with friends. You need 1 yard of cotton, a 14 inch zipper, pins and matching thread, scissors, a tape measure and a sewing machine. A neutral in a crisp cotton looks smarter than you'd expect for such a small garment. happiestcamper
6. How to Make Linen Fitted Crop Top

A fitted linen crop in a bold color is a one-day project. You need a sewing machine, 1.5 m of fabric, fabric scissors, pins, an invisible zipper, a tape measure and thread. Trace a shirt that fits well onto paper to get the armhole and bodice shape. Linen wrinkles, so press each seam as you sew; it gives a much crisper finish. collectivegen
7. Make a Crop Top From Any Top

You can turn almost any top into a crop with accurate measuring and clean cutting. You need a sewing machine, ⅜ inch elastic, a rotary cutter, a tape measure and the top you want to alter. Cut it to length, leaving a little extra for the hem, then sew. Cut longer than you think; I always try it on and pin before the final trim. abeautifulmess
8. The Clover Crop Top Sewing Pattern

The Clover crop is a drapey summer top in cotton shirting with ball buttons. You need the shirting, a spool of matching thread and the buttons. It uses basting stitches and French seams, which give a clean inside finish on a light, slightly sheer fabric. moodfabrics
9. Recycled Old Jeans Legs Crop Top

If you've saved old jeans, the legs make a sturdy crop top. You need the jeans legs, newspaper and a pen for the pattern, a zip, Velcro, fabric chalk, pins, a sewing machine, needle and thread. Switch to a denim needle; where flat-felled seams overlap, a standard needle often breaks. cutoutandkeep
10. Free Crop Top PDF Pattern

This free PDF crop uses one yard of jersey, a bias tape maker, scissors, a ballpoint needle, thread, pins and an iron. Cut the pieces, join them and hem the bottom. Jersey binding cut on the cross grain stretches better than bias-cut woven tape around a knit neckline. onlinefabricstore
11. Easy Summer Crop Top Pattern

This criss-cross crop is easy to dress up with a skirt or down with boyfriend jeans. You need ½ yard of jersey, a sewing machine, shears, a tape measure and pins. Crossing the straps at the back takes some strain off the shoulders, which helps on a bustier figure. creativefashion
12. Vintage Inspired Summer Crop Top

If you have a light-colored cotton in the drawer, this vintage-inspired crop is a good use for it. You draft a simple pattern to your own size using tracing paper, pencils, a ruler, thread, pins, scissors and a tape measure. Pale cotton can show what's underneath, so I'd line the front or wear a nude bra. madeupstyle
13. Trendy Shirred Crop Top with Tie Straps

Shirring makes a crop that stretches to fit, so sizing is forgiving. You need fabric, shirring elastic, scissors, a tape measure and pins. Cut to your size and follow the instructions. I steam shirred rows lightly after sewing; it shrinks the elastic and tightens the gathers. theessentialsclub
14. Fred Knotted Crop Top - Free Pattern

The Fred is a knotted tie-back crop with a plunging front. You need lightweight linen, a sewing machine, matching thread, a fabric marker, measuring tape, ruler, chalk, pins and scissors. A plunge needs fabric that behaves, so I'd avoid slippery linens and tack the neckline at the center to stop it shifting. fabrics store
15. How to Make Ribbed Crop Top

This ribbed bandage crop needs only ribbed fabric, scissors, a needle and thread. Rib knit has a lot of stretch and recovery, which is why the bandage style hugs without riding up. Hand sewing works, but a narrow zigzag by machine gives stronger seams. collectivege
16. Easy to Make Summer Crop Top

This summer crop is easy, comfortable and a touch more modest than many on this list. You need a 70 cm by 1.5 m piece of fabric, thread, pins, scissors and a sewing machine. Mark all seam allowances before you start, since the small pattern leaves little room for error. instructables
17. Gingham Tie Back Crop Top Pattern

Gingham is a natural fit for a tie-back crop on a hot day. You need 0.5 m of gingham cotton, thread and a sewing machine, scissors, pins and cord for the spaghetti straps. Cut the pieces and seam them. Line up the checks at the side seams before cutting, the same way you'd match stripes. contouraffair
18. Wrap Crop Top Sewing Pattern

A wrap crop can be worn 3 different ways, which makes it more useful than its size suggests. If you have a large men's shirt, this tutorial turns it into one. You also need a sewing machine, scissors, pins and thread. Leave generous seam allowances; men's shirt fabric often frays easily. thefeltedfox
19. How to Sew a Smocked Tube Top

A smocked tube top is great for a pool party with high-waisted jeans. You need 1 yard of quilting cotton, chalk, a ruler, pins, thread and a needle, scissors and a sewing machine. Cut, pin and sew as you go, then shirr. Tube tops need a firm grip at the top edge, so I'd add an extra row of shirring there. onlinefabricstore
20. How to Sew Ruched Bustier Crop Top

The ruched bustier crop borrows from lingerie and pairs easily with a skirt or jeans. You need a stretchy shirt, a sewing machine, safety pins, scissors, a bra for shaping, a tape measure and elastic. Ruching hides small fit errors, so it's kinder to beginners than it looks. instructables
21. DIY Long Sleeve Wrap Crop Top

This long sleeve wrap crop needs no pattern and no sewing at all. It turns a stretch singlet top into a wrap with basic craft supplies. Since the edges are raw, choose a knit that doesn't fray or curl, like a stable jersey. collectivegen
22. Free Beaded Crop Top Template

This beaded crop template makes a dressier top for evening. You need 1 yard of thin stretch cotton, 1.5 yards of black beaded sequin trim and a 16 inch black invisible zipper. Cut the pieces with seam allowances and sew. Beaded trim breaks needles, so I hand stitch it on last. moodfabrics
23. Puff Sleeve Tie Crop Top Sewing Pattern

Puff sleeves and a front tie make this crop sweet and summery. You need a sewing machine, thread, pins, elastic, a ballpoint needle and your fabric. Gathering the sleeve head evenly is the key step; I spread the gathers more toward the top of the shoulder so the puff stands up. thuzoediy
24. No-Sew Sequin Graphic Crop Top

This no-sew sequin graphic crop lets you add any word or design you like, either to an old shirt you cut down or to a crop you already own. Glue the sequins with a hot glue gun. Hand wash it inside out; machine washing can loosen glued sequins quickly. kristimurphy
25. How to Make Boxy Crop Top

A boxy crop is the simplest shape to draft, and this video tutorial walks through it. Draw the pattern on chart paper, trace it onto the fabric, cut, pin and sew, keeping the seam allowances, and hem for a neat finish. A boxy cut needs a fabric with some body, such as a cotton twill or linen, or it hangs limp.

Adding Length, Lining or Support
Free patterns are drafted for one look, but small changes make them work for more people. If you want more coverage, lengthen the pattern at the lengthen/shorten line, or at the hem if there isn't one, by 5 cm and redraw the side seams in a smooth line. That one change makes most crops wearable with mid-rise jeans.
For strappy, tube and bustier styles
- Make straps wider than the pattern shows if you want to wear a regular bra underneath.
- Add a lining to light or pale cotton; the same pattern pieces cut in a thin cotton voile work well.
- For tube tops, sew a strip of silicone gripper elastic inside the top edge so it stays up.
- Fuller busts often need a small bust adjustment on fitted crops; ruched and shirred styles avoid that step.
None of these changes add much time, and they're the difference between a crop you wear once and one you wear all summer.
Cut the First One From Scrap Fabric

Pick one or two from the list and make them this week. Most use less than a yard of fabric, so they're cheap to experiment with. Once you have a crop top pattern that fits you, it's easy to make more for friends, as gifts or even to sell. My advice is to start with a knit crop, then try a woven one with a zipper, so you learn both kinds of fabric.
