Fall clothes should feel good to sit around in and still hold their shape when you head out the door. That's the test I put these fifteen outfits through. They draw on what this season did well: chore jackets, boho dresses, wide-leg trousers, leopard, satin skirts, soft knits and tall boots. You'll probably own a version of half of these pieces already, so treat each look as a recipe. Keep your basics, add one seasonal piece, and use the fit notes to make it work for your height and shape.

Knit Fibers and How Soft They Stay
So many of these outfits rest on a sweater, cardigan or knit dress that the fiber matters as much as the shape. Before you buy, it helps to know how each one behaves after a few weeks of wear.
- Merino wool: fine, warm for its weight and rarely itchy. It pills a little at first, then usually settles down.
- Cashmere: very soft and very warm, but lower grades pill heavily and thin out at the elbows. Hand wash, dry flat.
- Lambswool and shetland: warmer and sturdier, often scratchy against bare skin. Wear a layer underneath.
- Cotton: easy to wash and good for mild days, but it stretches when wet and holds less warmth.
- Acrylic blends: cheap and soft in the shop, but they pill fast and don't breathe, so you can overheat indoors.
My quick test in a store: rub the sleeve against the body of the sweater for a few seconds. If it's already fuzzing, it'll be covered in bobbles within a month. And always check the care label, because a sweater you can't wash easily is one you won't wear often.
1. Chore Jacket Fall Outfit With Wide-Leg Jeans

I reach for a chore jacket when the forecast can't decide. Olive, camel, navy or faded brown, over a fitted white tee or a light ribbed sweater, with wide-leg jeans that match the jacket's boxy shape. Loafers for a neater finish; retro sneakers if you'll be walking a lot. A crossbody, hoops, a slim belt. The canvas on most chore jackets starts out stiff and softens with washing, so don't judge the fit on day one. Petite? A cropped jacket and a moderate leg width keep you from looking swamped. A striped scarf adds warmth.
2. Chocolate Brown Monochrome Fall Outfit

Chocolate gives you the depth of black but looks softer in low fall light, especially near the face. I build it from a fine-knit brown sweater and high-waisted trousers in a nearby shade, and I deliberately don't match them: espresso, cocoa and chestnut together look richer than one flat brown. Dark brown ankle boots, a suede or leather bag, gold jewelry. A cream coat lifts it on gray days. If all-brown feels heavy, let an ivory shirt collar show at the neck. It flatters a wide range of skin tones, which is why I suggest it so often.
3. Oxblood Sweater Fall Outfit With Midi Skirt

Oxblood is red with the volume turned down, and that makes it far easier to wear than bright red. An oxblood crewneck with a black, charcoal or chocolate midi. Satin gives the knit a glossy contrast; wool or pleats give it more structure. Pointed ankle boots, a top-handle bag, small gold earrings. Front-tuck over a full skirt, leave it out over a slim one. One thing I watch: chunky knits over satin can drag the skirt and leave a bulge at the waistband, so a fine-gauge sweater suits satin best. Black tights once it's cold.
4. Leopard Coat Fall Outfit With Black Jeans

Leopard behaves like a neutral when everything around it is plain. A leopard coat over a black turtleneck and straight black jeans, black ankle boots, a plain leather bag. If a full-length coat feels like too much, a shorter jacket or a softly patterned cardigan gives you the print in a smaller dose. Minimal jewelry. For color, swap the black sweater for oxblood. The pieces under the coat should be ones you'd wear twice a week anyway; the coat is doing all the talking, so nothing else needs to.
5. Boho Maxi Dress Fall Outfit With Suede Boots

A long boho dress softens a season full of heavy fabrics. Look for long sleeves, a defined waist and a small floral or paisley print. A cropped suede jacket on top keeps the long line from swallowing you, and knee-high suede boots slide under the hem. Slouchy bag, pendant, a thin belt if the waist needs help. For cold days, a thin thermal layer and opaque tights go underneath without changing the shape. On a petite frame, a midi version is usually more flattering than a floor-length one, which can bunch at the ankle.
6. Oversized Blazer Fall Outfit With Tailored Trousers

Oversized tailoring is comfortable, but it needs one close-fitting piece or the outfit loses its shape. An oversized gray, navy or brown blazer over a fitted knit, with high-waisted wide-leg trousers. Pointed flats, loafers or low kitten heels, a structured tote, a leather belt at the waist. If a matching suit feels too formal, pair a plaid blazer with solid trousers. Rolling the blazer sleeves to show a crisp shirt cuff makes it look intentional rather than borrowed. Long trouser hems are part of this look, so hem them for the shoes you'll actually wear.
7. Cardigan Fall Outfit With Satin Midi Skirt

A cardigan buttoned as a top over a bias-cut satin midi is one of the most comfortable dressed-up outfits I know. Charcoal, cream, burgundy or chocolate knit; a satin skirt that moves without adding bulk. Slingback flats or low boots for the day, pointed pumps for something special. Small bag, delicate earrings. I leave the bottom button open so the cardigan doesn't pull across the hip. A fitted camisole underneath if the cardigan gapes between buttons, which fine knits often do.
8. Double Denim Fall Outfit With Ankle Boots

Denim on denim works when the washes are close but not identical. A medium-wash shirt or fitted chambray with dark straight or wide-leg jeans. Tuck the shirt fully for shape, or leave it open over a ribbed tank. A brown leather belt and matching ankle boots warm up all that blue; a suede tote and simple metal jewelry finish it. Long camel coat when it's colder. Curvy figures often find a high rise with some give at the waistband more comfortable; petite women can go for an ankle-length hem so the boots show.
9. Leather Trench Coat Fall Outfit With Straight Jeans

A leather trench makes plain jeans and a turtleneck look like an outfit you planned. Black, espresso or burgundy, over a lightweight turtleneck and straight blue jeans. The long line of the coat does the shaping; the denim keeps it casual. Pointed ankle boots or loafers depending on the weather, a medium shoulder bag. Real leather is heavy and pricey, and a good faux version with a soft, low-shine finish is a reasonable choice. I tie the belt loosely behind rather than in front so the coat hangs open and moves.
10. Funnel-Neck Sweater Fall Outfit With Midi Skirt

Funnel necks are my answer for anyone who finds turtlenecks too tight. You get warmth at the neck without the folded collar pressing on your chin. Pair a softly structured one with an A-line or straight midi in wool, denim or faux leather. Cream knit looks lovely against brown, olive, burgundy or charcoal. Knee-high boots under the hem, a top-handle bag, studs. If the sweater is oversized, tuck a small section or choose a skirt with a clear waistband. A good outfit for cold offices where jeans aren't quite right.
11. Preppy Mini Skirt Fall Outfit With Knee-High Boots

A mini skirt in fall works when everything else is covered and classic. Plaid or solid, with an oversized crewneck over a crisp button-down so the collar and cuffs show. Opaque tights and flat knee-high boots. A structured crossbody and studs. Check the sweater length first: it should end at the skirt's waistband or a little below it, never near the hem, or the skirt disappears and it looks like you forgot it. If a mini isn't your thing, an A-line around the knee uses the same formula. A wool coat dresses it up.
12. Scarf Coat Fall Outfit With Relaxed Trousers

On a crisp morning, a scarf coat does the job of two pieces. Wool with a matching removable scarf, or a long simple coat with a tonal scarf draped over the shoulder to fake it. Underneath, a fine-knit sweater and relaxed tailored trousers; loafers or low ankle boots. A roomy tote and small earrings. I keep the palette to two or three colors, like camel, cream and chocolate, so the extra fabric reads as one shape. Wool is far less bulky than a puffer and still warm for most fall days, though it won't handle heavy rain.
13. Utility Jacket Fall Outfit With Cargo Pants

Utility clothes look best mixed with cleaner, fitted basics. An olive or khaki utility jacket, a black ribbed top, and relaxed cargo pants in charcoal, tan or matching green with flat, streamlined pockets. Bulky pockets on the thigh add width exactly where most people don't want it. Sleek sneakers, lug-sole boots or loafers, a compact crossbody. Sleeves pushed up on a warm afternoon, a thin sweater under the jacket when it cools. An interior drawstring gives you a waist when you need one.
14. Knit Dress Fall Outfit With Tall Boots

A knit dress is a sweater that's already an outfit. Long-sleeved ribbed midi, straight, gently fitted or slightly flared, with knee-high leather boots in black, cognac or deep brown. A long wool coat for structure, a belt if you want a waist, a medium bag, sculptural earrings. Thickness is where I'm strict. Thin knit clings to every line and shows the outline of anything underneath; a substantial knit hangs smoothly and is warmer too. Hold it up to the light in the shop; if you can see through it, pass.
15. Embellished Skirt Fall Outfit With Crewneck Sweater

An embellished skirt is easiest to wear when the top is almost boring. A midi with subtle sequins, beads, metallic thread or appliqué, with a plain crewneck in gray, black, cream or navy. The knit takes the edge off the shine so the skirt can come out before dark. Pointed flats, slingbacks or ankle boots. A small structured bag and one or two pieces of jewelry. Partially tuck a relaxed sweater. Wool sweaters can snag on sequins and beading, so I'd choose a smooth cotton or fine merino knit here rather than anything fluffy.
Petite, Tall or Curvy: Shifting the Proportions
Most of these outfits work on any body with a few small changes. These are the ones I make most often.
Petite
Shorten the long pieces. Midi instead of maxi dresses, cropped jackets instead of long chore coats, and wide-leg trousers hemmed so the shoe peeks out. Keeping your shoes and trousers in one color adds visual height.
Tall
You can carry the long trench, the floor-length boho dress and the oversized blazer without changing them. Check sleeve and inseam lengths first, since standard sizes are often short. Mini skirts may need to go a size longer.
Curvy
Look for stretch in jeans and structure in knits. Wrap or V-neck tops work well with the midi skirts here, and a belt at your natural waist over the knit dress or the scarf coat gives shape without adding bulk. Bias-cut satin skims curves more kindly than a stiff, straight skirt.
Wearing Your Favorite Formula All Autumn
Chore jackets, tailored trousers, boho dresses, satin skirts, warm browns, leopard and good boots all made this list because they're easy to wear again. Pick the one formula that fits your days and rebuild it from clothes you already have. Check that the proportions balance, that you can move and sit comfortably, and that the layers suit your weather. Then change the colors, lengths and accessories until it looks like you.
