Most of the fall outfits people love most aren't built from new purchases. They come from a good cardigan, decent jeans and one coat finally being worn together properly. That's how I approached these fifteen. They range from easy denim to work-ready skirts and dresses, and most rely on pieces you probably already have. For each, I've noted the fit point I'd check first and how to adjust it for your height or the weather. Start with lighter fabrics in September, then add tights, scarves and heavier coats as the mornings get colder.

Ten Pieces Behind Most of These Looks
Before buying anything, I'd lay these out on the bed and see how many you already own. Nearly every outfit below is built from some combination of them:
- A cardigan that ends at the waistband
- Straight-leg jeans and a wider pair
- One fitted turtleneck or mock-neck
- A striped or solid crewneck sweater
- A crisp button-down
- A midi skirt that moves
- A knit dress or sweater dress
- A light jacket: denim, barn or quilted
- A knee-length trench or wool coat
- Ankle boots and one pair of knee-highs
If you have most of these, the outfits below are mostly about combining them in new ways. The gaps are where to spend money. I'd fix the coat or the boots first, since they're the pieces seen most often and the ones that cope with the weather.
1. Cardigan And Straight-Leg Jeans Fall Outfit

A cardigan and straight-leg jeans is the outfit I'd test any new cardigan against, because it shows quickly whether the length works on you. A slightly cropped one that ends at the waistband pairs best with high-rise jeans; a longer one gives more coverage but needs a mid-rise or a looser jean so it doesn't cut the leg in half. Cream, camel and dusty blue all read as fall. Wear it buttoned as a top or open over a fitted tee, and drape it over your shoulders when the afternoon warms. Brown ankle boots, a structured crossbody and small gold earrings finish it.
2. Sweater And Plaid Mini Skirt Fall Outfit

A plaid mini with a sweater is playful, and the tights are what make it wearable in October. Opaque black tights give warmth and coverage without competing with the plaid. Pick a knit in cream, rust or forest green, and tuck just the front into the high waistband; a full tuck of a chunky knit adds bulk exactly where the skirt flares. Knee-high boots suit a cold day, chunky loafers a mild one. If a mini isn't for you, the same sweater and plaid in a midi length looks just as seasonal. Keep the jewelry to one small pendant.
3. Denim Jacket And Knit Dress Fall Outfit

On a mild early-fall day, a ribbed midi dress under a denim jacket gives just enough coverage. Ribbed knits hold their shape better than smooth jersey, which tends to cling and show every line underneath. Olive, oatmeal and deep red all suit the season. Wear a medium-wash jacket open with the cuffs rolled once. White sneakers keep it fresh for daytime, and suede ankle boots move it further into autumn. A slim belt under the jacket gives a waist if the dress is straight. Add a leather crossbody and small hoops, and it carries from errands to lunch.
4. Trench Coat And Wide-Leg Jeans Fall Outfit

Wide-leg jeans need a fitted top, and this outfit is the proof. A crewneck tee or thin turtleneck keeps the upper body neat so the fuller denim doesn't turn the whole shape boxy. Add a camel or khaki trench that ends around the knee. Pointed ankle boots under the hem lengthen the leg, as long as the jeans are hemmed for that heel; clean leather sneakers work on walking days but need a shorter hem. Petite women tend to look best in cropped wide legs with a shorter trench. Taller frames can carry full-length jeans and a long coat.
5. Oversized Blazer And Black Leggings Fall Outfit

Leggings with a blazer only look intentional when there's a layer in between. A long button-down that extends a few inches below the blazer's hem gives coverage and makes the layering visible. Pick a charcoal, camel or brown plaid blazer and thick, opaque leggings with a wide waistband; thin leggings show every seam under a shirt tail. Riding boots or chunky loafers with crew socks keep it grounded, and a structured handbag stops it reading as loungewear. I wear this one for travel days and appointments, when I want to move freely but still look ready to meet someone.
6. Turtleneck And Satin Midi Skirt Fall Outfit

Satin and a fine knit make a striking contrast: matte against shine. I'd tuck a fitted turtleneck in black, cream or burgundy into a bias-cut satin midi. Bias cutting lets the skirt move and skim the hips instead of sticking, but it also shows lines underneath, so smooth, no-line underwear is worth it. Champagne, chocolate and dark florals suit the season. Pointed ankle boots make it dressier; minimalist sneakers make it daytime. A cropped leather jacket adds structure. Satin also water-spots, so on a wet evening keep the jacket on and consider a crepe skirt instead.
7. Barn Jacket And Relaxed Jeans Fall Outfit

A barn jacket with a corduroy collar is one of the hardest-working fall layers I know, and it pairs naturally with relaxed straight jeans. Wear it over a striped sweater or a plain long-sleeve tee. Canvas jackets start stiff and soften with wear, so expect it to feel boxy for the first few outings. A hip-length cut keeps your shape; longer versions can look shapeless over relaxed denim. Loafers, ankle boots or retro sneakers all suit it, and a single roll of the jeans shows off the shoe. A woven belt and suede tote add texture without fuss.
8. Sweater Vest And Button-Down Shirt Fall Outfit

A sweater vest over a button-down is an academic look that's easy to get wrong if the shirt is too bulky. Start with a crisp white, pale blue or striped shirt that fits close through the body, so the vest lies flat instead of bunching over gathered fabric. Let the collar, cuffs and an inch of hem show. Straight trousers make it polished; relaxed jeans make it casual. A burgundy or purple vest gives a stronger seasonal note than neutrals. Loafers with ankle socks and a structured satchel complete it for campus, a creative office or a museum.
9. Leather Jacket And Floral Midi Dress Fall Outfit

A summer floral dress can stay in rotation through fall if the print is dark: burgundy, navy, rust or forest green flowers read seasonal, while pastels look out of place by October. A black or brown leather jacket adds structure and cuts the chill. A cropped jacket that hits at the waist suits fuller skirts best. Knee-high boots give the most coverage, and a block heel handles leaves and wet pavement better than a slim one. Ankle boots are lighter for early fall. Add opaque tights and a light scarf as it gets colder.
10. Matching Knit Set Fall Outfit

A matching knit set makes mornings simple because there's nothing to coordinate. A ribbed sweater with a midi skirt or relaxed knit trousers in camel, gray or plum creates one long column of color, which lengthens almost everyone. Add a long wool-blend coat in a similar neutral. Knit sets do pill where bags rub and where thighs meet, so I'd go for a tighter, smoother knit over a fluffy one if you'll wear it often. Leather sneakers suit travel; heeled ankle boots are smarter. Later, split the pieces and wear the sweater with jeans or the skirt with another knit.
11. Corduroy Pants And Striped Sweater Fall Outfit

Corduroy pants feel more distinctive than jeans while being almost as easy to wear. Choose straight or gently wide-leg cords in rust, olive or camel, and pair them with a cream sweater in thin navy or burgundy stripes. A partial front tuck shows the waist. Corduroy's ribs, called wales, change the look: a fine wale reads polished, a wide wale more casual and bulkier through the hip, which petite women may want to avoid. Suede clogs, loafers or low ankle boots all work. A smooth leather crossbody contrasts with the textured fabric, and small hoops finish it.
12. Shacket And Black Jeans Fall Outfit

A shacket is heavier than a shirt and lighter than a jacket, which makes it the layer for days that can't decide on a temperature. Wear a plaid one over a fitted mock-neck or a plain crewneck so the base stays sleek. Black straight jeans ground the plaid and carry it into the evening. Choose a plaid with camel, cream or burgundy in it to stay in the fall palette. Lug-sole boots suit the weight of the fabric. Leave it open, or button the middle for shape. If oversized layers overwhelm you, look for a hip-length version with narrower shoulders.
13. Belted Sweater Dress And Knee-High Boots Fall Outfit

A sweater dress is a complete outfit in one piece, and a belt decides how it looks on you. Choose a knee-length or midi dress in charcoal, oatmeal or forest green. A slim or medium belt at the natural waist defines shape; placing it slightly higher lengthens the legs, which works well for petite frames. Knee-high leather or suede boots balance the soft knit. Fitted knits can ride up and cling to tights, so smoothing shorts or a slip underneath helps. Relaxed sweater dresses can go unbelted. Add a structured bag and a light coat for work or a family meal.
14. Suede Jacket And White Jeans Fall Outfit

White jeans in fall work when everything around them is warm and textured. Start with straight-leg ivory or white denim and add a lightweight sweater in camel, chocolate or olive. A tan or brown suede jacket over the top adds softness and depth. Off-white or ecru denim is easier to wear than bright white in autumn light, and it hides a little more. Thicker denim matters too, since thin white jeans show pockets and seams. Coordinate ankle boots and a leather belt with the jacket. Swap the sweater for a fitted tee on warm afternoons.
15. Quilted Jacket And Midi Skirt Fall Outfit

A quilted jacket and a flowing midi skirt is a practical, slightly countryside pairing for cool days on your feet. Choose an olive, navy or rust jacket with a simple collar and little hardware, and wear it over a fitted long-sleeve top with a solid, floral or checked skirt. A jacket that ends near the waist keeps the skirt's shape visible; a long quilted coat over a full skirt tends to look heavy. In that case choose a straight skirt instead. Sleek sneakers or lace-up ankle boots both work, and a crossbody keeps your hands free. Add tights as it gets colder.
Skirts and Dresses Once It Turns Cold
Several of these outfits use skirts and dresses, and the question I'm asked most is how long they can stay in the rotation. The answer is mostly about the tights and boots.
Reading the Denier on a Pack of Tights
Denier measures the thickness of the yarn. Around 15 to 20 is sheer and adds almost no warmth. Roughly 30 to 50 is semi-opaque, good for early fall and dressier outfits like the satin skirt. From about 60 up, tights are opaque and noticeably warmer, and 80 to 100 or more is what I'd wear under a mini on a properly cold day. Fleece-lined tights go further still, though they can look thick at the ankle with low shoes.
Where the Boot Meets the Hem
With knee-high boots, either the hem covers the top of the boot or there's a clear gap of a few inches between them. A sliver of an inch looks like a mistake. With ankle boots and a midi, matching the tights to the boots keeps the leg in one line, which is especially helpful for petite women.
Knits also behave differently over tights. Sweater dresses and wool skirts can cling and ride up. A half slip or a pair of smoothing shorts underneath fixes it, and I'd pack one in my bag the first time I wear a new knit dress.
A Short List of Pieces Doing Most of the Work
Most of these outfits come from a short list: a cardigan, two pairs of jeans, a trench or barn jacket, a sweater dress, one skirt and comfortable boots. Start with the combinations that match your actual week, then adjust fabrics and layers for your climate. Fit matters more than any trend, so check hems, sleeve lengths and where each jacket ends on your body before buying anything new. When something new does come in, make sure it works with at least three things you already own.
