Autumn is the season where I see the most closets get rebuilt from scratch, and most of that shopping isn't needed. A good fall outfit is really a stack of layers that each earn their place: a base that sits flat, a mid layer that adds warmth or texture, and an outer layer you can take off at lunch. Below are fifteen combinations I'd actually put together for clients, from denim and knitwear to tailoring, suede and a couple of dresses. Most of them share pieces, so you can mix them rather than buy fifteen new outfits. If you live somewhere mild, swap the heavier knits for cotton; if your mornings dip near freezing, plan on tights, thermals and a proper wool coat.

The Closet Audit I Do Before Any Autumn Shopping
Before clients buy a single fall piece, I have them pull out everything they already own in four groups: outerwear, knitwear, bottoms and boots. Laid out together, the gaps are usually obvious. Most people have plenty of tops and jeans and are short on one good coat or one pair of boots that works with skirts.
I then try each knit under each jacket. A sweater that looks fine alone can be too thick to fit under a blazer or leather jacket, and it's better to learn that at home than on a cold morning. Anything that pills badly, has stretched at the cuffs or no longer closes over a layer goes into a separate pile to repair, donate or replace.
- Outerwear: one weather layer (trench or utility jacket) and one warm layer (wool coat) covers most of the outfits below.
- Knitwear: at least one thin turtleneck or fine crewneck that fits under tailoring.
- Bottoms: dark straight jeans and one midi skirt give you both casual and dressier options.
- Boots: an ankle boot for trousers and jeans, and a knee boot tall enough to meet a midi hem.
Only then do I write a shopping list, and it rarely runs past three items.
1. Autumn Trench Coat And Jeans Outfit

I reach for a trench first in early autumn because it handles drizzle and wind without the bulk of wool. Over a thin crewneck and straight-leg jeans it looks finished, and dark denim pushes it toward office-appropriate while a faded wash keeps it relaxed. Loafers work on dry days; switch to ankle boots once the pavement is wet. The detail I check first is length. On petite clients a trench that hits mid-calf swallows the leg, so I look for one that ends just above the knee, while taller women can carry the long version. Worn open, it draws a vertical line down the body. Belted, it gives you a waist but adds a lot of fabric at the hip, so I only tie it on a slim base layer.
2. Autumn Cardigan And Wide Leg Jeans Outfit

The trap with a roomy cardigan and wide-leg jeans is letting both pieces be loose, which turns into one shapeless block. I keep the base fitted, a thin tee or tank, and choose denim with some structure so the jeans hold a clean line. Hem them so they skim the floor in the shoes you'll actually wear; a wide leg that drags picks up water and frays at the back. A cropped cardigan shows the high rise and suits shorter torsos, while a longer one gives more coverage through the hip. Sneakers, suede clogs or square-toe ankle boots all work, and burgundy, chocolate, oatmeal or forest green bring in the season without much effort.
3. Autumn Blazer And Trousers Outfit

For a day that runs from the office into dinner, a blazer and trousers do most of the work. Charcoal, deep brown, navy and a quiet plaid all read as autumn. Underneath, a fine-gauge turtleneck adds warmth without thickening the blazer, which a chunky knit would. In September I'd swap that for a crisp cotton shirt. Before buying the blazer, I have clients raise their arms and reach forward: if the back pulls tight across the shoulder blades, it won't sit right over a sweater later in the season. Straight or wide trousers, then loafers, pointed ankle boots or a low block heel and a structured tote. If a full suit feels stiff, a brown blazer over cream trousers breaks it up, and pushing the sleeves up slightly relaxes it further.
4. Autumn Leather Jacket And Midi Skirt Outfit

Leather and a fluid midi skirt are a good pairing because the jacket gives the skirt the weight it lacks. Satin, pleats or a soft drape all work under a fitted knit, and the contrast between the two textures does the job jewelry would otherwise have to do. A cropped jacket that stops at the waistband is the easiest shape here; a hip-length one cuts the skirt in an awkward place. Knee-high boots should disappear under the hem so no leg shows on cold days. One practical note: satin and pleated skirts tend to cling to opaque tights, so a slip or an anti-static spray saves a lot of tugging. Keep the colors to two, such as chocolate with cream or black with deep red.
5. Autumn Sweater Dress And Knee High Boots Outfit

A midi sweater dress is the closest thing to a one-piece outfit autumn offers. Ribbed knits hug more closely and show every line underneath, so I usually steer clients toward a smoother, slightly heavier knit if they want the dress to skim rather than cling. The boot shaft should end under the hem; a gap of bare knee between boot and dress breaks the line. Add a narrow belt only if the dress has some shape to begin with. A long wool coat covers it on cold days, and a cropped suede jacket handles early October. For real warmth, a thin fitted layer and opaque tights underneath do more than a thicker dress would. Chocolate, camel, burgundy, charcoal and deep green are the shades I'd look at first.
6. Autumn Denim Shirt And Midi Dress Outfit

A denim shirt under a sleeveless midi dress is a simple way to keep a summer dress working into autumn. The shirt has to be thin and fitted; a heavy denim shirt bunches at the armholes and the dress stops lying flat. Chambray is usually the right weight. A solid shift or a belted midi suits this better than a busy print, and dark indigo looks dressier than pale blue. Keep the dress neckline simple so the collar can sit cleanly on top, then add tall boots, loafers or a low ankle boot, a slim belt and a medium tote. A trench or wool blazer goes over everything when it turns cool.
7. Autumn Plaid Skirt And Turtleneck Outfit

Plaid does the seasonal work in this outfit, so everything else should stay quiet. An A-line, pleated or straight midi in brown, gray, burgundy or green, with a fitted turtleneck tucked in to show the waist. The turtleneck needs to be thin, because a bulky knit tucked into a pleated skirt pushes the pleats outward at the hip. Black, cream or chocolate knits sit easily with most traditional plaids. When it gets colder, add opaque tights and knee boots; in early autumn, loafers with socks are lighter. My usual rule with a pattern this strong is to repeat one of its shades in the shoes or bag rather than introducing a new color. It's a reliable look for offices, museums and family lunches.
8. Autumn Suede Jacket And White Jeans Outfit

White jeans don't have to go away in September. They just need darker, heavier company. I pair straight or relaxed ecru denim with a fine brown sweater and a camel, rust or chocolate suede jacket, so the jeans brighten the outfit and the suede supplies the autumn weight. Olive, burgundy and camel all sit well next to the cream. I prefer off-white to optic white here; it looks less like leftover summer. Brown ankle boots, loafers or retro sneakers, a woven belt and a soft shoulder bag finish it. Watch the forecast with this one, because suede darkens and stiffens when it gets soaked and white denim shows every splash. A longer jacket covers the hip; a cropped one shows off a high rise.
9. Autumn Shacket And Leggings Outfit

This is the outfit I suggest for a day of errands and walking, when you don't want to keep adjusting anything. Thick black leggings, a long fitted tee or thin knit, and a shacket in plaid, corduroy or brushed wool that falls below the hip. The long outer layer gives coverage and the fitted base stops it looking bulky. Do the bend test on the leggings before you rely on them: thin ones go see-through at the seat, so choose an opaque, substantial fabric with a firm waistband. Chunky sneakers or lace-up boots handle the walking, and a crossbody keeps your hands free. A cream top under a brown and olive shacket gives more depth than an all-black stack.
10. Autumn Monochrome Brown Outfit

Tonal brown looks rich when the shades vary and flat when they're all the same. Chocolate wide-leg trousers, a mocha sweater and a camel coat or brown suede jacket give you three related tones, and mixing textures (smooth tailoring, soft knit, suede, polished leather) keeps the pieces from blurring together. Dark loafers or pointed ankle boots, a tan bag and a little gold jewelry finish it. Brown right under the chin doesn't suit everyone; on cooler skin tones it can make the face look tired, so in that case I'd put a cream knit at the top and keep the darker browns lower down. The same formula works in burgundy, gray, navy or olive with pieces you probably already own.
11. Autumn Utility Jacket And Black Jeans Outfit

An olive utility jacket over black denim is about as dependable as casual autumn dressing gets. Underneath, a striped long-sleeve tee, a cream sweater or a black turtleneck all work. Straight or slim black jeans keep the outline lean so the jacket's pockets and texture carry the interest. If the jacket has a drawstring waist, cinching it slightly gives some shape. Tan lace-ups, leather sneakers or Chelsea boots, a crossbody and a watch are plenty. Slim jeans tend to stack and bunch over ankle boots, so I give them one small cuff. On colder days a quilted vest fits under the jacket, or wrap a wool scarf.
12. Autumn Knit Vest And Button Down Shirt Outfit

A knit vest over a button-down reads polished without the stiffness of a blazer. An oversized white or pale blue shirt is the easiest base, with a solid, striped or cable-knit vest on top. Let a little shirt hem show under the vest and keep the lower half clean: tailored trousers, straight jeans or a midi skirt depending on the day. The shirt has to be thin cotton, otherwise all that fabric bunches under the vest and adds inches at the stomach. A V-neck vest lengthens the neck and shows the collar; a crewneck covers more. Loafers with ankle socks, or sleek ankle boots when it's colder, plus a leather tote and small hoops. Burgundy, navy, camel and charcoal vests go with almost any neutral shirt.
13. Autumn Floral Dress And Boots Outfit

Florals stay seasonal in autumn if the print is dark and muted: rust, burgundy, navy, olive or plum flowers on black or cream. A long-sleeve midi gives coverage and sits well with knee-high leather boots. Use the dress's own tie or a slim belt to mark the waist. Over the top, a fitted cardigan, cropped jacket or tailored wool coat; a slouchy chunky knit tends to fight a print and hide the shape of the dress. A small suede bag adds texture without competing. Lightweight floral fabrics are often see-through against light, so I'd add a thin slip along with the tights. Keep the boots solid and plain. For anyone tired of jeans, this is a comfortable option for work and daytime events.
14. Autumn Wool Coat And Straight Jeans Outfit

A good wool coat changes a plain jeans outfit more than any other single purchase. Camel, charcoal, navy or black over a crewneck and straight-leg denim; dark jeans dress it up and a vintage wash keeps it casual. Loafers on mild days, then pointed or Chelsea boots as it gets colder, with a structured bag and a soft scarf. Fit the coat over the thickest sweater you plan to wear with it, not over a tee, because a coat that pulls across the back when you cross your arms will be uncomfortable all winter. Petite clients usually look best in a knee-length cut; a long coat makes a strong vertical line on taller frames. A partial tuck in the sweater keeps the layers from hiding your shape.
15. Autumn Burgundy Skirt And Cream Sweater Outfit

Burgundy is the red I suggest to people who don't think they wear red. It's deep enough to sit beside browns and blacks without shouting. A satin, knit or tailored burgundy midi skirt with a cream crewneck is the easiest version, with a partial front tuck for definition. Chocolate knee boots keep it tonal; black ankle boots and black tights give more contrast. If a tuck adds bulk at the waist, a shorter sweater that just meets the waistband looks cleaner. A structured brown bag, small gold earrings, and a camel coat with a light scarf on cold days. It's polished enough for an office and relaxed enough for a weekend lunch.
Trench, Suede or Wool for the Day's Forecast
The outer layer decides whether an autumn outfit works outdoors, so I pick it by the weather first and the look second.
Damp, windy and mild
A cotton trench or a utility jacket. Cotton gabardine shrugs off light rain and blocks wind, and neither one minds getting wet. This is the day to leave suede and pale denim at home.
Dry and crisp
Suede and leather jackets are at their best here. Suede marks and darkens in rain and can stiffen as it dries, so I keep it for clear days and brush it with a suede brush after wearing to lift the nap.
Genuinely cold
A wool or wool-blend coat. A higher wool content holds warmth better than a coat that is mostly polyester, so check the label rather than judging by thickness. Wool also handles a light shower better than people expect; let it dry on a wide hanger away from the radiator.
Why Your Sweaters Pill and How to Slow It Down
Pilling shows up first where fabric rubs: under the arms, at the sides where a bag strap sits, and at the cuffs. Short, loose fibers work their way out and tangle into little balls. Softer, fluffier yarns and blends with a lot of acrylic tend to pill sooner than tightly spun wool or cotton.
- Wash knits inside out on a cold, gentle cycle, or by hand, and skip the dryer.
- Fold them instead of hanging, which stretches shoulders and hems.
- Rest a sweater for a day between wears so the fibers recover.
- Remove pills with a fabric shaver or sweater comb on a flat surface, using light strokes.
- If your crossbody always rubs one side, switch shoulders now and then.
The Same Boots and Coat Keep Coming Back
Look back through the list and you'll notice how often the same few things come up: a camel or wool coat, brown ankle boots, knee-high boots, dark jeans, a cream knit. That's deliberate. Start with what you already have, add burgundy, olive, camel or chocolate where your closet is missing color, and think about your climate before buying anything heavy. Fit and proportion matter more than any single trend. If a coat closes comfortably over a sweater and your hems sit right over your boots, most of these outfits will come together on a busy morning.
