Most of my fall work with clients is about one thing: getting dressed fast on a cold morning and still feeling put together at lunch. This season makes that easier than usual. Polished office tailoring, relaxed sportswear, soft boho dresses, leopard and a lot of suede are all in the mix, and nearly all of it layers well. The twenty outfits below are the ones I'd build for work, weekends and errands, each with the shoes and outer layer I'd pair and the fit adjustments I'd suggest. Swap in your own colors and start from what's already hanging in your closet.

Getting Oversized Layers to Look Deliberate Instead of Sloppy
Half of these outfits use something roomy: a big blazer, a scarf coat, a slouchy sweater, wide jeans. Relaxed shapes are comfortable, but they're also where outfits most often go wrong. When I fit a client in oversized pieces, I work through the same checks every time.
- Only one volume at a time. A loose top wants a slimmer bottom, and wide trousers want a fitted top.
- The shoulder seam still has to land near your shoulder bone, even on an oversized blazer or coat.
- Show the waist somewhere: a front tuck, a belt or a jacket that's cropped right at the waistband.
- Leave a bit of wrist showing. Sleeves that cover your hands make the whole outfit look a size too big.
- Keep hems clean. Wide jeans should skim the top of the shoe, not puddle under the heel.
If you're petite, I'd scale the oversized piece down rather than skip it: a blazer that's roomy in the body but ends at the hip, or wide jeans with a shorter inseam. On taller frames, longer jackets and full-length trousers balance well without extra thought.
1. Suede Jacket Autumn Outfit

Suede gives a jacket a softness leather doesn't have, and brown or camel makes it easy to wear with almost anything. I put a relaxed suede jacket over a fitted ivory crewneck, add high-waisted wide-leg jeans and dark brown pointed ankle boots, then a structured shoulder bag and small gold earrings. For petite frames I'd pick a cropped jacket and hem the jeans so they skim the floor without pooling. Midsize and plus-size clients should test the jacket closed with the arms forward; suede has little stretch, so the shoulders need real room. Swap the tee for fine merino on colder days.
2. Burgundy Sweater And Satin Skirt Autumn Outfit

A burgundy sweater over a satin skirt is warm color on a cool fabric, and that contrast is what makes it work. I look for a slightly oversized knit that stops around the hip, then do a partial front tuck into a champagne or chocolate satin midi. Knee-high leather boots and a compact top-handle bag finish it. Satin clings to tights and shows static on dry days, so I recommend a bias-cut skirt with a lining or a thin slip underneath. Add a wool coat once it turns cold. It's polished enough for the office without looking like you dressed for an event.
3. Barn Jacket And Straight Jeans Autumn Outfit

On mornings when I have five minutes, a barn jacket and straight jeans is what I'd reach for. The barn jacket has become one of the most recognizable in-between layers this fall, and for good reason: it's sturdy and goes with denim. Olive or tan with a corduroy collar looks right; underneath, a striped cotton shirt or light crewneck. Dark straight jeans, brown loafers or slim ankle boots, a roomy leather tote and a watch. Cuff the jeans once on warm days and switch to wool socks later. Try the jacket with your arms raised, since boxy cuts can ride up at the back.
4. Leopard Skirt And Black Knit Autumn Outfit

Leopard is one of the strongest prints of the season, and a midi skirt is the easiest place to wear it. I keep everything else black: a fitted turtleneck or soft crewneck, then black knee-high boots so the line from hem to floor stays unbroken. A dark brown suede bag picks up the print's warmer spots. Pick a skirt that falls rather than flares; volume plus print adds width fast. If bold pattern makes you nervous, a smaller, muted spot reads almost like a neutral. A tailored wool coat is the only other layer it needs.
5. Oversized Blazer And Tailored Trousers Autumn Outfit

Oversized blazers are everywhere this fall, but oversized still has to fit at the shoulder. Before anything else I check that the seam sits at or just past the shoulder bone; if it's halfway down the arm, the jacket looks borrowed. Charcoal, navy or chocolate over a white tee or fitted knit, with wide-leg trousers in a near shade, gives a suit effect without needing a match. Loafers or low block heels and a structured tote finish it. Keep the base layer close to the body. Petite women look best in ankle-length trousers, while tall women can take a full break over the shoe.
6. Boho Maxi Dress And Knee-High Boots Autumn Outfit

A boho maxi dress adds movement to a season of heavy layers. This year's bohemian mood leans toward 1970s shapes: long sleeves, high necks, fabric that floats. I'd pick rust or forest green and ground it with brown or taupe suede knee-high boots. A cropped cardigan or suede jacket over the top keeps the proportions balanced, because a long coat over a long dress turns into a lot of fabric. Add a slim leather belt if you want shape. Hold the dress up to daylight before you buy; many lighter boho fabrics need an opaque slip.
7. Leather Trench And Knit Dress Autumn Outfit

A long leather trench blocks wind better than wool and sheds light rain, which makes it a practical buy as well as a striking one. Below-the-knee leather coats are one of the clearest outerwear shapes of the season. I'd wear dark brown or oxblood over a ribbed midi knit dress in taupe or gray, so the soft dress plays against the hard coat. Pointed boots, a structured bag and sculptural earrings finish it. Before buying, sit down in it. Leather doesn't give, and a trench that pulls across the hips when seated will crease and stress at the seams.
8. Denim Shirt And Wide-Leg Jeans Autumn Outfit

Double denim looks deliberate when there's real contrast between the washes. I tuck a mid-blue denim shirt into dark indigo wide-leg jeans and put a slim brown belt between them to mark the waist. Heeled ankle boots add height; retro sneakers make it a weekend look. A camel coat and a burgundy bag bring in warmth when it's cold. Curvy clients often find contoured-waist jeans stop the back gap that wide legs are known for, and petite women should check inseam lengths before buying. Open two buttons and roll the sleeves so it doesn't look stiff.
9. Cardigan And Slip Skirt Autumn Outfit

A buttoned cardigan worn as a top is one of my favorite tricks for slip skirts, because the knit softens the shine. I choose a fitted cardigan in gray or chocolate, button it all the way, and pair it with a bias-cut midi in a deeper autumn shade. Tuck the front if you want definition. Slingbacks in early fall, knee-high boots once the cold arrives, plus a light wool coat. If your torso is short, keep the cardigan ending at the waistband. If you want more hip coverage, wear a longer one open over a fitted top instead.
10. Trench Coat And Blue Jeans Autumn Outfit

When the forecast can't make up its mind, a trench coat is the layer that handles all of it. I wear beige or stone over a crisp white shirt and mid-wash straight jeans, with the collar open and the cuffs pushed back a little. Dark loafers sharpen it; leather sneakers relax it. A crossbody and sunglasses are enough. A detachable belt is worth looking for: tied at the back, the coat hangs straight; fastened at the front, it defines the waist. Classic trenches don't really date, and the relaxed proportions of this year's cuts are what make it feel current.
11. Sweater Vest And Pleated Trousers Autumn Outfit

A sweater vest keeps your core warm without bunching at the elbows, which matters under a coat. I layer an oversized cream or charcoal vest over a blue poplin shirt and let the cuffs and hem show. High-waisted pleated trousers, leather loafers and a structured tote complete it. With a deep V vest, buttoning the shirt to the top reads preppy; leaving one open softens it. Clients with a fuller bust usually do better in a finer knit with a higher neckline, because chunky vests add volume right at the chest. Add a long wool coat on cold mornings.
12. Plaid Blazer And Mini Skirt Autumn Outfit

Plaid and plain black is a pairing that rarely fails. I put a slightly oversized brown or olive plaid blazer over a black turtleneck and an A-line mini, then add opaque tights and knee-high boots for a long vertical line. The fit detail I check: the blazer should end past the waistband but leave some of the skirt showing, otherwise it looks like you forgot the skirt. On petite or curvy frames, a blazer with a shaped waist keeps it from looking boxy. A knee-length skirt works the same way if a mini isn't you.
13. Chocolate Brown Monochrome Autumn Outfit

Wearing one color top to bottom only works if the textures change, and chocolate brown is the shade I recommend first for it. I'll do a fine-knit turtleneck with smooth wide-leg trousers a shade darker, a brushed wool coat, polished dark brown boots and a cognac bag. The mix of matte and shiny is what gives it depth. Matching the trousers to the boots lengthens the leg. If all brown feels heavy near your face, an ivory scarf or shirt collar lifts it. Gold jewelry adds a little light.
14. Red Sweater And Gray Trousers Autumn Outfit

Red against gray looks more sophisticated than red against denim, because gray calms the color down. I pair a cherry or crimson mock-neck with charcoal pleated trousers, black loafers or pointed ankle boots, and a structured black bag. Silver earrings suit the cool gray; gold warms it. If bright red isn't kind to your skin, try brick or burgundy. A black wool coat over the top doesn't compete. The trouser hem decides the shoe: full length needs a heel to skim, while a cropped trouser looks right with loafers and visible socks.
15. Utility Jacket And Cargo Pants Autumn Outfit

An olive jacket with olive cargo pants can look like a uniform, so I vary the tones on purpose. A structured olive jacket goes over soft taupe cargos and a fitted cream long-sleeve top. White retro sneakers keep it light; brown hiking-style boots make it rugged. A simple crossbody and small hoops are plenty. Cargo pockets sit right at the thigh and add width there, so if that's a spot you'd rather not widen, choose flat streamlined pockets. Cinch the jacket for shape. It's my travel and market-day outfit.
16. Scarf Coat And Leggings Autumn Outfit

A coat with a built-in scarf makes leggings and a sweater look finished, which is the main reason I like it. It's one of the more wearable versions of this year's wrapped, enveloping outerwear. Camel or charcoal wool over a fine knit and thick opaque black leggings, then riding boots or chunky ankle boots and a structured tote. Keep the sweater and leggings close in color so the coat is the focus. If the scarf feels heavy at the throat, drape it over one shoulder. These coats need space in the wardrobe, so hang them on a wide hanger to keep the shoulders from dimpling.
17. Polo Knit And Midi Skirt Autumn Outfit

A knit polo is the kind of top that looks plain on the hanger and charming on. I wear a navy or cream one tucked fully into a structured A-line midi in wool or corduroy, add a narrow belt, and pick loafers with ribbed socks for a preppy feel or tall boots when it's cold. A top-handle bag and a light trench complete it. If your torso is long, a high-waisted skirt rebalances things. The open collar leaves space around the face, which is useful if turtlenecks feel crowded on you. It reads nostalgic without crossing into costume.
18. Bomber Jacket And Wide-Leg Pants Autumn Outfit

A bomber over wide-leg pants is sportswear made polished, a direction you'll see a lot this fall in crisp shirts, knits and practical outerwear. I go for a cropped bomber in olive or black over a fitted white tee, with high-waisted fluid trousers and streamlined sneakers. A leather shoulder bag keeps it grown-up. The trouser fabric matters: a woven crepe or wool gives the contrast, while jersey makes the whole thing look like loungewear. If cropped jackets feel exposed, choose one that ends just below the waist with light padding, since puffy bombers add bulk at the ribs.
19. Knit Dress And Tall Boots Autumn Outfit

A knit dress and tall boots is the outfit I tell people to own if they only want one. Choose a midi with enough body to skim rather than cling; ribbing adds texture and a mock neck adds warmth. Black or dark brown knee-high boots go under the hem so no skin shows in between. A belt is optional; without it you get a clean column. Add a long wool coat and a medium bag. I always check for a slit, because a fitted midi without one shortens your stride. A thin slip helps the knit glide over tights instead of catching.
20. Hoodie And Wool Coat Autumn Outfit

A hoodie under a tailored coat is comfort with structure on top, and it's how I'd dress for a long travel day. A plain gray or navy hoodie that isn't overly big goes with straight jeans and a long camel or charcoal wool coat. Retro sneakers keep it easy; leather ankle boots sharpen it. Lay the hood flat outside the coat collar, or it bunches at the neck and pushes the collar up. Shorter hoodies sit neatly on high-waisted jeans. Skip loud logos; they fight the coat.
Which of These Outfits Handle a Chilly Morning and a Mild Afternoon
Fall days often start in the 40s and end in the 60s, and the outfit that feels right at 8 a.m. can be too much by 2 p.m. Here's how I'd sort the list by how well each one adjusts.
Easiest to adjust through the day
The trench and jeans, the barn jacket, the suede jacket and the bomber all have a light base under a removable outer layer. Take the jacket off and you're still fully dressed. These are what I suggest for days with a big temperature swing.
Better for steady cold
The scarf coat, the knit dress with tall boots and the chocolate monochrome look are warm all over, and the knit layers can't really come off. Wear them when the whole day stays cool, or plan for a coat you can carry.
Where the fabric decides
Satin skirts feel cold against the legs on windy days, so I'd add tights or swap to the knit dress. A leather trench handles wind and drizzle well but gets warm indoors, while suede should stay home if rain is forecast, since it marks and darkens when wet. A merino layer under any of these adds warmth without bulk and breathes better than synthetic fleece once you're indoors.
Comfort Comes First, the Seasonal Piece Comes Second
A useful fall wardrobe is built on pieces you'll actually wear on a Tuesday, with a few seasonal touches layered in. These outfits cover tailoring, soft knits, denim, suede, practical jackets and a couple of prints, and none of them needs to be copied exactly. Change the shoes for your weather, move hemlines to the coverage you like, and pick colors that suit your skin. Proportion does more work than trend: a fitted base under oversized outerwear, or one color head to toe, will carry most of these. Shop your closet first and add one seasonal piece only when you need it.
