Three people is a lovely size for a family session, and a slightly tricky one to dress. With so few of you in the frame, every outfit is visible and every clash shows. I plan these the same way each time: a tight palette, one standout piece, and the other two outfits repeating its colors in smaller doses. A floral dress, a plaid shirt or a textured sweater can be that starting point. Then I look at the location, the likely temperature and, most of all, how happy your child will be in their clothes for an hour. Soft knits, corduroy, denim, suede and flowing fabrics all read well against fall scenery, in a field, a park, the woods or a studio. Here are twenty pairings to start from.

Dress Your Child First, Then Build the Parents Around Them
Most families start with Mom's dress and then hunt for something that goes with it in a child's size. I do it the other way round. Children's clothes come in fewer colors and cuts, and your child has the strongest opinions about what feels scratchy or tight. Once their outfit works, the adult pieces are far easier to find.
- Let your child try the outfit on and play in it for half an hour. Watch for tugging at collars, waistbands and tags. Whatever bothers them at home will bother them more in a field.
- Pull two colors from what the child is wearing. Those become the palette for both parents.
- Give one parent the strongest color or pattern and the other the quietest. The child sits in the middle, visually and usually literally.
- Check the three outfits together on the floor or a bed. If one jumps out or disappears, swap a single piece rather than starting over.
This order also saves money. Adult pieces in neutral shades are easy to pull from your own closets, while the child's outfit is usually the one thing worth buying new.
1. Rust And Cream Fall Family Of 3 Photo Outfit

Rust against green grass or yellow leaves is one of the warmest combinations I know. One parent in a flowing rust midi with tan ankle boots and simple gold; the other in a cream cable-knit sweater, dark brown chinos and leather boots. The child in a cream top with rust corduroy overalls or trousers and comfortable brown shoes. Three textures, smooth cotton, chunky knit and cord, give the photo depth even in a tight crop. If it's cold, a camel coat or neutral cardigan fits the palette. I keep jewelry small here; rust is doing all the talking and doesn't need help.
2. Olive And Tan Fall Family Of 3 Photo Outfit

Picture an open field of pale grass in late afternoon. Olive and tan sit right in it while still letting the family stand out. One parent in an olive wrap dress, tall brown boots and a fine pendant; the other in a light tan button-down, chocolate chinos and brown lace-ups. The child in an oatmeal sweater, olive pants and tan boots or soft loafers. Spread the olive unevenly, a whole dress on one person and a pair of trousers on another, rather than the same amount on everyone. A brown belt, a small suede bag or a textured bow connects the three. It's a good palette for active, running-around shots.
3. Burgundy And Beige Fall Family Of 3 Photo Outfit

Burgundy brings depth without overwhelming a small group. Make a burgundy floral midi the anchor, with beige ankle boots and a slim neutral belt. The second parent in a beige quarter-zip, dark jeans and brown boots or burgundy-toned sneakers. The child in a burgundy cardigan, ivory shirt, tan trousers and brown shoes. The main color shows up three times in decreasing amounts, which is what keeps it connected without matching. A flowing dress, soft knit and structured denim give three different surfaces. In the woods, burgundy feels at home, and the beige keeps faces bright against dark trunks.
4. Navy And Mustard Fall Family Of 3 Photo Outfit

Want fall color without leaning on brown or orange? Navy and mustard is my usual answer. One parent in a navy midi with a mustard cardigan, tan boots and small gold earrings. The other in a mustard or ochre sweater over a pale blue shirt with navy chinos. The child in a navy corduroy romper and mustard knit top, or navy trousers with an ochre sweater if pants suit them better. Keep any pattern to one person, a subtle plaid shirt or a print dress. Mustard is a color the eye goes to first in a photo, so I usually put it on the person I want people to notice, and very often that's the child.
5. Brown And Denim Fall Family Of 3 Photo Outfit

Brown and denim are the palette most families can pull straight from their closets. One parent in a chocolate knit midi with a denim jacket and taupe boots; the other in a chambray shirt, dark brown trousers, a matching belt and casual leather boots. The child in a caramel sweater, medium-wash jeans and tan high-tops or ankle boots. Three different denim shades look coordinated; three identical pairs of jeans look like a store display. Rolled sleeves and a light layer make it feel natural rather than staged. Keep accessories brown, tan or muted blue. It suits farms, woodland paths and a backyard session.
6. Sage And Ivory Fall Family Of 3 Photo Outfit

Sage and ivory give a soft, quiet portrait that still says fall. One parent in an ivory sweater dress, a sage scarf and light brown knee-high boots. The other in a sage overshirt over a cream henley with tan chinos and suede shoes. The child in an ivory cable-knit with sage cords and neutral boots. Pale palettes need texture or they go flat, so look for ribbing, brushed cotton, corduroy or a little embroidery. I steer families away from bright white here; in sun it blows out to a shape with no detail, while ivory keeps its folds. A camel coat adds warmth without changing the colors.
7. Camel And Black Fall Family Of 3 Photo Outfit

Camel and black are for families who like a cleaner, more modern look. One parent in a black midi under a camel wrap coat with black ankle boots; the other in a camel crewneck, black tailored trousers and brown or black boots. The child in a black turtleneck and camel suspender pants with comfortable black shoes. Watch the balance: big areas of black lose their detail in photos, especially in shade, so camel should appear on at least two people. A herringbone coat or ribbed sweater adds interest without another color. I'd use this palette on city sidewalks, against architecture or in a plain studio.
8. Plaid And Cream Fall Family Of 3 Photo Outfit

Plaid adds personality, as long as only one person wears the strong version. One parent in a cream knit dress with brown boots and a plaid scarf; the other in a rust, navy and cream plaid shirt with dark chinos. The child in a solid rust sweater, cream cords and tan boots. The colors inside the plaid tie all three together. Pick a medium-scale check. A tiny one turns to mush in a full-length shot, and a very large one can look like a costume on a small family. Leave stripes and other prints out entirely. A cream cardigan or neutral jacket covers a cold day.
9. Forest Green And Brown Fall Family Of 3 Photo Outfit

Forest green against red, orange and yellow leaves is about as fall as a photo gets. One parent in a forest green maxi with a fitted waist, brown ankle boots and a camel wool hat. The other in a brown textured sweater with dark green chinos and leather boots. The child in a cream shirt under a green knit vest, with brown cords and sturdy shoes. That cream collar near the child's face is doing important work; deep colors right under the chin can make a little face look shadowed. One or two accessories in the whole group is plenty, not hats and scarves on everyone.
10. Terracotta And Blue Fall Family Of 3 Photo Outfit

Terracotta and dusty blue balance a warm color against a cool one. One parent in a terracotta wrap dress, tan boots and a small blue-gray hair clip; the other in a dusty blue button-down, dark brown chinos and matching leather shoes. The child in a cream sweater with terracotta pants and blue suspenders, or a muted blue dress with a rust cardigan if that suits them better. Keep both shades soft. Saturated orange and bright blue fight a natural background instead of sitting in it. Matte fabrics photograph more cleanly than shiny ones. Add a denim or tan jacket only if the weather insists.
11. Cream And Charcoal Fall Family Of 3 Photo Outfit

Cream and charcoal handle a cool day with a polished look. One parent in a charcoal pleated skirt, a fitted cream sweater and gray or taupe ankle boots. The other in a cream henley under a charcoal jacket, dark denim and brown boots. The child in a charcoal romper or trousers with a cream cable-knit and soft neutral shoes. Mix the amounts so the family doesn't split into a block of light and a block of dark. Heathered knits and wool textures keep it from going flat. Against a dark background, I'd shift more cream up toward the faces. A watch or minimal silver is enough.
12. Blush And Chocolate Fall Family Of 3 Photo Outfit

Blush seems too delicate for fall until you put chocolate brown next to it. One parent in a dusty blush maxi with a cropped brown cardigan and suede ankle boots; the other in a chocolate button-down or sweater, tan chinos and dark brown shoes. The child in a cream blouse or shirt with blush corduroy overalls and brown boots. Choose a muted, slightly gray blush; bright pink throws a color cast onto skin when the light bounces. A small floral on the dress or the child's shirt is fine if everything else stays solid. It looks soft in pale grass, an orchard or a bright studio.
13. Burnt Orange And Navy Fall Family Of 3 Photo Outfit

Burnt orange has all the energy of the season, and navy keeps it in check. One parent in a burnt orange midi with a navy cropped jacket and brown ankle boots; the other in a navy sweater over a light shirt with khaki trousers. The child in a navy overall dress or suspender pants with a burnt orange knit and tan boots. Use the orange sparingly. In a park full of orange foliage, too much of it and people start to blend into the trees. Navy frames it. Keep logos and graphics out of every outfit; a cartoon on a little shirt pulls the eye away from faces.
14. Taupe And Dusty Blue Fall Family Of 3 Photo Outfit

A misty morning or a pale field suits taupe and dusty blue. One parent in a long-sleeve dusty blue dress with a taupe belt and suede boots; the other in a taupe sweater, slate-blue trousers and dark brown shoes. The child in an oatmeal knit, dusty blue cords and taupe boots. Because the colors are so muted, the fabrics have to provide the contrast, a flowing dress beside chunky knit beside structured corduroy. If it's cold, a stone-colored coat keeps the palette intact, where a bright puffer would break it. Keep accessories matte and few. Lakeside paths and soft woodland suit it well.
15. Mustard And Gray Fall Family Of 3 Photo Outfit

Mustard warms up gray the way a lamp warms up a room. One parent in a gray sweater dress with a mustard scarf, brown or black tights and taupe boots; the other in a mustard crewneck, charcoal chinos and brown lace-ups. The child in gray overalls over an ivory shirt, with mustard socks, a cardigan or a knit hat. Treat the mustard as an accent, not a block on everyone. Light and dark gray together are fine, but keep cream near faces so the group doesn't look heavy. Layers that come off between shots make this the one I'd pick for a chilly park session.
16. Maroon And Khaki Fall Family Of 3 Photo Outfit

Maroon and khaki are a traditional pairing with a lot of room to play. One parent in a maroon floral dress with a tan jacket and cognac boots; the other in a solid maroon button-down, khaki trousers and a brown belt. The child in a cream sweater, khaki cords and a maroon vest or cardigan. Maroon has a lot of visual weight, so I never give it to everyone in equal amounts. Let the printed dress anchor it and echo the color in a small layer on the child. Khaki and cream give the eye somewhere to rest. Polished enough for a framed print, easy enough for candid walking shots.
17. Monochrome Brown Fall Family Of 3 Photo Outfit

All-brown works only when each person wears a clearly different shade. One parent in a mocha knit midi, a camel coat and dark brown boots. The other in a light tan sweater with chocolate trousers and cognac shoes. The child in a cream shirt, caramel cord overalls and medium-brown boots. That's light, medium and deep across the three. Texture matters even more than usual, so mix cotton, ribbed knit, wool, suede and corduroy. I make sure there's a small cream touch near every face, a collar or a scarf, so the portrait doesn't go muddy. It suits woods, dried fields, old fences and neutral studios.
18. Denim And Cream Fall Family Of 3 Photo Outfit

If your family lives in jeans, lean into it; casual clothes you're comfortable in photograph better than stiff ones. One parent in a cream midi with a cropped denim jacket and tan ankle boots; the other in a cream sweater, dark jeans and brown leather boots. The child in a denim overall dress or overalls over a cream long-sleeve shirt with neutral sneakers. Light, medium and dark denim separate the three of you in a group shot. Tan belts, brown shoes or a camel cardigan add warmth. Have everyone sit on the ground in their denim at home first; stiff jeans make seated poses awkward.
19. Plum And Oatmeal Fall Family Of 3 Photo Outfit

Plum is a nice change from the usual reds and oranges of fall. One parent in a long-sleeve plum maxi with oatmeal or taupe ankle boots and fine gold; the other in an oatmeal textured sweater, dark brown trousers and leather shoes. The child in a cream shirt, plum cords, an oatmeal cardigan and brown boots. Choose a softened plum, closer to dried berries than to bright purple, which tends to read unnaturally vivid in outdoor photos. The deep color next to pale knits gives each person definition. If you want a pattern, a small floral or quiet plaid with plum and cream. Keep coats neutral.
20. Black And Cognac Fall Family Of 3 Photo Outfit

Black and cognac look sharp in town or out in the country. One parent in a black sweater dress with cognac knee-high boots, a matching belt and minimal gold. The other in a black button-down or fine knit with camel chinos and cognac shoes. The child in a cream top, black cords or a skirt, a cognac cardigan and brown boots. Cream needs to appear somewhere to soften the contrast and lift faces. Don't put all three of you in big black coats; in a group shot they merge into one dark mass. Ribbed knit, corduroy, suede and leather give the black texture to catch light.
If Your Third Person Is a Baby or a Toddler
With one small child, a lot of the session happens with the baby in someone's arms, and that changes what the adults should wear as much as what the child wears.
Babies who are held
The parent holding the baby needs a soft, plain surface at the chest. Sequins, chunky buttons and stiff embellishment scratch little cheeks and get grabbed, and long necklaces become toys. A smooth knit or cotton reads well behind a baby's face. Bare feet or soft booties look sweeter than hard shoes on infants, and a thin cardigan keeps them warm between shots.
New walkers
Toddlers who have just started walking need flexible, flat soles with some grip; stiff boots trip them on grass and uneven paths. Overalls and rompers stay put when a toddler runs, unlike a top that rides up over a tummy. Choose snaps at the crotch for easy diaper changes, and check that the overalls still fit over a diaper without pulling at the straps.
The spare outfit
Pack a second top for the child in the same color family. Snacks, mud and drool all happen. If the spare goes with the palette, the rest of the session carries on and nobody has to go home early.
Let the Child's Outfit Set the Pace
The family photos people love most show three people who look connected and comfortable, not costumed. Pick two or three main colors and spread them across all of you instead of buying matching pieces. Different textures, layers and shapes give the picture depth while the palette keeps you together. Think about the location before you settle on colors, and let comfortable shoes and soft fabrics decide your child's outfit. Try everything on a few days ahead so there's time to fix a hem or swap a sweater. Then on the day, forget the clothes and enjoy each other. That's what ends up in the frame.
