Masc dressing in fall comes down to a few things I check on every client: where the shoulder seam sits, how much room the trousers give through the seat and thigh, and whether the shoes can handle a wet sidewalk. This season leans on relaxed tailoring, heavy knits, denim, utility pockets and serious outerwear, which suits masculine and androgynous wardrobes well. None of it has to come from a particular department. I shop both sides of the store and judge each piece on shape, fabric and how it moves. The twenty outfits below run from chore jackets and cargo pants to wool coats and a relaxed suit, and I've noted where each one needs adjusting for petite, tall, curvy or plus-size frames.

Shopping the Menswear Rack When Sizes Don't Translate
Most of the pieces in these outfits are easiest to find in menswear, and that's where sizing trips people up. Men's tops are cut straighter, with wider shoulders, longer sleeves and no room planned for the bust or hips. Men's trousers are sized by waist and inseam and usually sit lower on the hip, with a flatter seat.
When I shop with a client, I go by measurements, not the size on the tag:
- Jackets and shirts: fit the shoulder seam to your shoulder bone, then check you can cross your arms without pulling at the back. Sleeves can be shortened later.
- Shirts over a bust: size up for the chest and have the sleeves and hem adjusted. If buttons gape when you sit, it's too small.
- Trousers over curvy hips: buy for the hip and seat, then have the waist taken in. A tailor can take in a waist easily; letting out a seat often isn't possible.
- Inseam: men's trousers often run long. A hem is a simple alteration, so don't skip a good pair over length alone.
- Knits: men's sweaters are boxier and longer, which is usually the point. Check the hem doesn't land at the widest part of your hip.
If you bind, give yourself extra ease through the chest in shirts and jackets. A binder plus a fitted shirt pulls, and a little room in a sturdy fabric hides the line far better than a thin, close fit.
1. Masc Fall Outfit With Chore Jacket and Jeans

I start almost every masc fall wardrobe with a chore jacket, because the boxy canvas shape does the work for you. Olive, navy, tobacco or washed black over a heavyweight white or cream tee, straight-leg jeans and a plain leather belt is the whole formula. Brown work boots make it rugged; black derbies make it office-ready. The thing I check first is fabric weight: thin cotton versions collapse and lose that square line, so look for duck canvas or a sturdy twill. If you're curvier through the hip, pick a jacket that ends just below it and wear it open so the front edges draw two straight lines down the body.
2. Masc Fall Outfit With Flannel and Cargo Pants

Flannel over a plain crewneck is the easiest cold-morning outfit on this list. Leave a rust, forest or brown plaid open over a black or off-white tee, and pair it with straight or loose cargo pants. I steer shorter clients away from very baggy cargos; the side pockets add width right at the thigh, and too much fabric swallows the leg. Black combat boots, a canvas backpack and a dark cap finish it. Swap the tee for a waffle thermal when it's properly cold, and roll the flannel sleeves twice so the forearm shows and the top doesn't read as one big block.
3. Masc Fall Outfit With Oversized Blazer and Trousers

An oversized blazer is where I see the most fit mistakes. Oversized should mean extra length and a looser body, not shoulders that hang off your own and pull across the chest when you reach forward. I'd go charcoal or brown, a plain crewneck underneath, and pleated trousers in a neutral that sits close to the jacket. Loafers with visible crew socks keep it relaxed. If a matched set feels too formal, a gray blazer with black trousers breaks it up. Push the sleeves a little and leave it unbuttoned; the open front makes a longer line than a buttoned one.
4. Masc Fall Outfit With Denim Jacket and Black Jeans

Double denim works when the washes clearly differ. A medium-blue jacket over a gray sweatshirt or black mock neck, with straight black jeans below, gives a sharp two-tone block that almost anyone can wear. For broader-looking shoulders I look for a slightly boxy jacket that stops near the upper hip; longer denim jackets drag the eye down. High-tops or lace-up boots, a knit beanie, maybe one silver chain. Add a thermal under the sweatshirt when it drops, and either keep the jean hem clean or cuff it once so textured socks show.
5. Masc Fall Outfit With Leather Jacket and Wide-Leg Pants

Leather is my favorite fall outerwear for masc styling because it holds a shape on its own. A black or deep brown bomber, moto or simple zip jacket over a heavy white tee or fitted black turtleneck, then wide-leg wool trousers to soften all that hardness. Chunky boots and a belt with plain hardware keep it grounded. Real leather will feel stiff for the first few weeks and loosens at the elbows with wear; faux versions don't break in the same way, so buy those fitting right on day one. Keep the shoulders close and the trousers roomy, and the outfit balances without you disappearing under it.
6. Masc Fall Outfit With Rugby Shirt and Corduroy Pants

A striped rugby shirt reads preppy without being formal, and the heavy cotton and stiff collar give it more structure than a regular long-sleeve tee. I pair it with straight corduroys in chocolate, tan or olive; the wale adds texture that suede sneakers or brown loafers pick up nicely. When it turns colder, a waxed canvas jacket goes over the top. If wide stripes feel too young for you, a solid rugby with a contrast collar gives the same shape. Check the shirt length before deciding on a tuck: rugbys often run long, so a front tuck usually beats a full one.
7. Masc Fall Outfit With Sweater Vest and Button-Down Shirt

This is the academic outfit: a V-neck sweater vest over a button-down, with relaxed pleated trousers and loafers or derbies. White, pale blue or a fine stripe under a charcoal, camel or navy vest gives enough contrast to see both layers. I tuck the shirt for a traditional finish and leave it out for weekends. The fit problem I run into most is a shirt that pulls across the chest. Size up and have the sleeves shortened; a tailor can fix sleeve length cheaply, but nobody can add room across the front. Where the shoulder seam lands matters far more than the size label.
8. Masc Fall Outfit With Bomber Jacket and Relaxed Jeans

Bomber, crewneck and relaxed jeans is about as simple as fall dressing gets. I buy bombers with enough room for a sweatshirt underneath, because a bomber that only fits over a tee is useless by November. The ribbed waistband stops at the hip, which broadens the upper body and gives the outfit a clear shape. Faded or dark indigo straight jeans, retro sneakers or combat boots, a ribbed beanie. For an all-dark version, a black bomber with charcoal jeans and a gray tee looks flat in photos unless you break it with white sneakers or a lighter cap.
9. Masc Fall Outfit With Trench Coat and Hoodie

A trench over a hoodie mixes two worlds, and it works because the trench brings the structure the hoodie lacks. Pick a straight-cut trench in tan, olive, navy or black with very little waist shaping, wear it open, and let the hood sit over the collar. Tie the belt loosely at the back instead of cinching it; a cinched waist undoes the masc line immediately. Loose black trousers or dark jeans and leather sneakers or chunky boots for wet pavement. Hem length is my main fit check here: knee length for petite frames, calf length if you're tall.
10. Masc Fall Outfit With Cardigan and Loose Trousers

Cardigans can look masculine, but only with the right knit. I look for a chunky gauge, dropped shoulders and a straight body; a fine, fitted cardigan reads soft no matter what you pair it with. Forest, brown or charcoal over a white tee, worn open or with the bottom buttons undone, with loose pleated trousers and loafers or sneakers. A cropped cardigan over high-rise trousers lengthens the leg, while a hip-length one gives more coverage. Chunky knits do pill at the underarms and where a bag strap rubs, so a fabric comb is worth keeping in the drawer.
11. Masc Fall Outfit With Utility Vest and Work Pants

On days that start cold and end warm, I want layers that come off fast. A long-sleeve thermal in cream, gray or black, a quilted or canvas utility vest, and carpenter pants in brown, olive or faded black. Work boots or trail-style sneakers and a canvas cap finish it, and the vest pockets mean you can skip the bag. The rule I apply to every oversized combination: one piece loose, one piece closer. A big vest needs a closer shirt; wide pants need a trimmer vest. If everything is roomy, the outfit loses its shape.
12. Masc Fall Outfit With Turtleneck and Pleated Pants

A smooth turtleneck tucked into high-rise pleated trousers is the sharpest outfit here for the least effort. Black, cream, chocolate or burgundy against charcoal or taupe trousers, with loafers, derbies or square-toe boots. Add a relaxed blazer or overshirt if you want more coverage through the torso. Fine merino turtlenecks cling, and some clients hate that; a heavier mock neck in a straighter cut keeps the high neckline but skims instead of tracing every curve. I'd also skip a turtleneck for anyone who finds the collar itchy, since you'll spend the day tugging at it.
13. Masc Fall Outfit With Varsity Jacket and Chinos

A varsity jacket brings a sporty edge, and I keep everything around it plain so it doesn't tip into costume. Navy, green, brown or black over a hoodie or heavy crewneck, then straight chinos in khaki, charcoal or olive, which look tidier than sweats. Retro sneakers with crew socks picking up one jacket color tie it together. I'd choose one with few patches or logos and a waistband that sits at the hip. If the chinos bunch at the shoe, cuff them once; a clean break makes the sneakers look chosen.
14. Masc Fall Outfit With Wool Coat and Straight Jeans

A long wool coat is the single piece that makes basics look finished. Gray, navy or cream crewneck sweater, straight dark jeans, and a camel, charcoal or black coat worn open. Single-breasted reads streamlined; double-breasted adds width at the chest, which some clients want and others don't. Before anything else I check the shoulder seams, because those are the one thing a tailor can't fix affordably. Sleeves and hems can be shortened, and a good alteration makes an inexpensive coat look far better. Wool also beads up in wet weather, so let it dry on a wide hanger.
15. Masc Fall Outfit With Denim Shirt and Corduroy Trousers

Denim shirt plus corduroy is a texture combination I come back to every fall. A medium or dark chambray or denim button-down open at the neck over a white ribbed tee, chocolate, camel or olive cords, brown suede boots and a leather belt. A canvas field jacket on top when the wind picks up. Heavy denim shirts can feel stiff across the shoulders when you reach; a lighter chambray moves more easily. Suede darkens and spots in rain, so treat the boots with a protector spray before the wet weeks arrive.
16. Masc Fall Outfit With Puffer Vest and Jogger Pants

For busy days I build around a matte puffer vest over a hoodie. Black, olive, navy or rust works, with tapered joggers in a heavy cotton rather than thin athletic jersey, which looks like gym wear the moment it creases. High-top sneakers or weatherproof boots, a beanie and a crossbody bag for walking around town or travel. Keep the vest and joggers dark and let a lighter hoodie make the contrast. With looser joggers, pick a vest that ends at the hip and fits closer, so only one layer carries the volume.
17. Masc Fall Outfit With Shacket and Black Trousers

A heavyweight shacket covers the stretch of fall that's too cold for a shirt and too warm for a coat. Plaid, brushed brown, forest or solid charcoal over a fitted crewneck or thin mock neck, then straight black trousers. Chunky loafers or lace-up boots take it past the usual jeans-and-sneakers version. Worn open, it puts two vertical lines down the torso; buttoned halfway, it's warmer. I look for a firm collar and dense fabric to get a broader shoulder. Watch for seams that drop well past your shoulder, which makes the tidy trousers look like they belong to another outfit.
18. Masc Fall Outfit With Quarter-Zip and Tailored Pants

When a blazer feels like too much, I reach for a quarter-zip. Medium-weight knit in charcoal, navy, forest or oatmeal, with a white tee peeking at the collar, tailored straight trousers and leather sneakers, loafers or suede derbies. A trench or wool jacket goes over it in colder weeks. Zip it lower indoors and higher in wind. Pressed trousers are what keep this from reading as loungewear, so I wouldn't pair it with joggers if the aim is looking put together.
19. Masc Fall Outfit With Monochrome Black Layers

All-black only works with texture. I mix cotton, denim, wool and leather so each layer stays visible: a black tee or mock neck, a boxy overshirt or cropped jacket, straight black jeans or wide trousers, and leather combat boots. A watch, chain or belt buckle is enough contrast. Check the outfit in daylight before you leave, because blacks fade at different rates and a washed-out pair of jeans next to a new overshirt looks brown. Charcoal socks or a dark gray beanie give a quiet tonal break.
20. Masc Fall Outfit With Relaxed Suit and Sneakers

A relaxed suit is the dressiest outfit here, and I'd still wear it with sneakers. Choose an unstructured blazer with matching pleated trousers in charcoal, navy, brown or a quiet check, then trade the dress shirt for a heavy white tee, a fine knit polo or a mock neck. Clean leather sneakers make it right for dinners, creative offices and events. The trouser break should be slight; extra fabric pooling at the ankle looks sloppy above a low sneaker. Buy for the shoulders and the room through hips and thighs, then let a tailor take up the sleeves and hems.
Building Twenty Outfits From About Fifteen Pieces
You don't need twenty new outfits. Look through the list and you'll see the same pieces doing most of the work: straight jeans, black trousers, pleated trousers, a white heavyweight tee, a crewneck sweater and a pair of boots appear again and again. When I put a fall rotation together, I sort it into three layers.
Bottoms and base
Two pairs of jeans in different washes, one pair of black trousers, one pair of pleated or corduroy trousers, three heavy tees or thermals, and one turtleneck or mock neck. Keep the base colors neutral so everything mixes.
Middle layers
One flannel or shacket, one sweater or quarter-zip, one cardigan or vest. This is where I let color in, because a rust flannel or forest cardigan changes the feel of the same jeans and boots.
Outer layer and shoes
One casual jacket (chore, denim or bomber), one coat (wool or trench), and three pairs of shoes: boots, leather sneakers and loafers or derbies. Make sure at least one pair is waterproof, or treat your boots before the rain starts. Buy fewer outer pieces and spend more on them, since they're the most visible part of every outfit and take the most wear.
Shoulders First, Everything Else Second
Masc fall dressing is practical once you know what to check. Start with the outfit closest to your routine, then adjust color, proportion and fabric until it feels like yours. Structured jackets give definition, open layers and straight trousers give movement, and the shoes set the mood: sneakers casual, loafers polished, boots workwear. A couple of good jackets, solid base layers, comfortable trousers and shoes that survive rain will cover most of these looks. What matters most is that you feel like yourself wearing it.
