Thanksgiving is a strange day to dress for. You might start in a cold driveway, spend an hour next to a hot oven, then sit at a table for three hours and finish on the couch. When I put together a men's holiday outfit, I plan for that whole arc rather than the first ten minutes. The twenty looks below run from flannel at a relaxed family table to a tie-free suit for a restaurant booking, with overshirts, knit polos and clean sneakers in between. Most rely on a removable top layer and trousers with a little give, because those two choices decide how comfortable you are by pie.

Dressing for a Hot Kitchen and a Cold Porch
Thanksgiving houses swing hard on temperature. The kitchen and dining room heat up with the oven and a dozen people, while the porch, the driveway and the yard stay cold. I build every holiday outfit in three layers that each look finished on their own, so you can strip down without suddenly looking underdressed.
- Base: a tee, henley or shirt you'd be happy to be seen in alone. Cotton or thin merino breathe; polyester blends get clammy near the stove.
- Middle: the piece that sets the tone, such as a cardigan, quarter-zip, vest or overshirt. This is what most photos will show.
- Outer: a coat, bomber or field jacket that comes off at the door. It should close over the middle layer without straining at the buttons.
Trousers are the other half. I tell men to sit down in the fitting room and lean forward as if reaching for the gravy. If the waistband digs in or the seat pulls tight, go up a size or pick a pair with a little stretch. Brand-new leather boots are a poor idea for a day on your feet; wear them around the house for a week first, or choose a pair you've already broken in.
1. Flannel Shirt Thanksgiving Outfit

Flannel is the safest place to start for a casual day at home, and the thing I check first is weight. A thin, fuzzy flannel pills at the elbows within a season, while a heavier brushed cotton holds its shape. A plaid in burgundy, forest green or rust over a cream tee reads warm without trying. I pair it with dark straight-leg jeans and brown chukkas, and I leave out ripped denim, which tips the outfit from relaxed into careless. Wear it open around the house; for photos, button up and tuck just the front so the shirt doesn't balloon at the belt. A light quilted jacket covers the walk outside.
2. Quarter-Zip Sweater Thanksgiving Outfit

Want to look put together without a blazer? A quarter-zip over a light blue Oxford does it. I prefer thin merino here because a chunky zip-neck gets hot fast in a full dining room and the zip pulls open into a wide V. Navy or charcoal with tan chinos is the combination I reach for most. Leave the zip about two inches down so the shirt collar sits flat on top, and skip the tie entirely. Suede loafers dress it up; plain leather sneakers keep it casual. It's a strong pick for meeting a partner's family for the first time.
3. Crewneck Sweater Thanksgiving Outfit

A textured crewneck over a button-down is the outfit I suggest to men who don't want to think about it. Oatmeal or olive over pale blue, with navy chinos, gives just enough contrast. The detail people get wrong is the collar: tuck both points inside the neckline, otherwise one always escapes and curls up by mid-afternoon. Let a sliver of shirt hem show below the sweater, no more than an inch. Suede desert boots look more deliberate than trainers. If the waistband feels snug at noon, it will feel worse at four, so a pair with some stretch earns its place.
4. Cardigan Thanksgiving Outfit

Cardigans flatter more body types than most men expect, because the open front draws a long vertical line down the middle. A shawl-collar version in charcoal, camel or chocolate over a white tee looks seasonal and still relaxed. I wear it with clean, evenly washed dark jeans and brown leather boots. Fit matters more here than with a sweater: if the buttons pull across the chest, it looks a size too small even when it isn't, and a baggy one sags at the pockets once you load them with keys and a phone. Leave it open in a warm room and do up the middle button for photos.
5. Turtleneck And Blazer Thanksgiving Outfit

For a dressier table, I'd choose a turtleneck under a sport coat over a shirt and tie every time. Fine-gauge is the key, since a chunky roll neck under a jacket bunches at the lapels and makes the neck look short. Cream or charcoal under a textured brown or gray coat, with wool trousers, keeps the palette to two or three colors. I check the jacket by reaching across a table: if the back seam strains, size up. Polished loafers or Chelsea boots with dark socks finish it. This one photographs well and holds up at a nicer restaurant.
6. Oxford Shirt And Chinos Thanksgiving Outfit

An Oxford shirt and chinos rarely gets anyone into trouble. White or light blue with olive, navy or tan chinos covers most casual and smart-casual gatherings, and brown loafers or lace-up boots finish it neatly. My rule on tucking is simple: if the shirt tail is long and curved, tuck it; if it was cut to wear out, it should end around the middle of your fly. Roll the sleeves twice, just below the elbow, when you're helping in the kitchen. A Harrington jacket or a thin cardigan adds warmth without bulk.
7. Knit Polo Thanksgiving Outfit

The long-sleeve knit polo sits between a sweater and a collared shirt, and it's my answer for anyone who runs warm or lives somewhere November barely feels like fall. Chocolate, dark green or muted rust with stone or charcoal trousers looks seasonal without a heavy knit. I tuck it only into higher-rise trousers; with low-rise jeans the knit pulls out within an hour. Cotton or light merino breathes better than acrylic, which traps heat and shines at the elbows. A suede bomber handles the evening drop.
8. Corduroy Pants Thanksgiving Outfit

Corduroy gives you texture without needing a loud color. The wale is worth paying attention to: fine-wale reads closer to a dress trouser, while wide ridges look rugged and add visual bulk to the thighs. I start with straight-cut olive or tobacco cords and keep the top quiet, a cream henley or blue button-down with a charcoal crewneck over it if the house runs cold. Corduroy wears shiny at the seat and knees over time, so I check those spots before a big day. Dark brown Chelsea boots and a plain leather belt are all it needs.
9. Dark Jeans And Sport Coat Thanksgiving Outfit

When nobody can tell you the dress code, dark jeans and a sport coat cover both ends. The jeans need to be one solid dark indigo with no fading, which is what lets them sit under tailoring. A white Oxford and a soft, unstructured jacket in brown or gray keep it relaxed. I steer men away from stiff, padded shoulders for this: you'll sit for hours, and a structured coat rides up at the collar every time you lean in. Suede loafers or brogues bridge the denim and the jacket. Open collar, no tie, and a plain pocket square only if you like one.
10. Sweater Vest Thanksgiving Outfit

Sweater vests divide people, but they solve a real Thanksgiving problem: warmth on the body with free arms for carving and carrying plates. An olive or camel vest over a white Oxford, with pleated tan trousers, gives a slightly academic look. I go a half size relaxed here. A tight vest wrinkles across the stomach as soon as you sit, and that's the photo everyone keeps. Roll the shirt sleeves evenly if you're serving, and pick loafers over sneakers if the rest of the table is dressing up.
11. Henley And Overshirt Thanksgiving Outfit

A henley under a wool-blend overshirt is my go-to for an informal meal with a backyard game afterward. Cream or heather gray underneath, olive or brown plaid on top, then straight dark jeans and lace-up boots. Overshirts are cut to sit over another layer, so check that the shoulder seam lands at your shoulder bone with the henley on, not on its own. Wear it open inside and buttoned outdoors. The two necklines and the mix of knit and wool do the work that accessories would otherwise have to.
12. Denim Shirt Thanksgiving Outfit

Chambray is easy to get wrong if everything below it is also blue. I pair a dark denim shirt with olive chinos or chocolate trousers so the shirt stands out instead of blending into the jeans. A camel crewneck over it, with the collar and cuffs showing, adds warmth and a third tone. Pick a shirt with minimal fading; a heavily washed one looks like workwear next to tailored trousers. If you do want denim on denim, keep a clear jump in shade between top and bottom. Dark brown suede boots tie it together.
13. Polo Shirt And Bomber Jacket Thanksgiving Outfit

For a warm-climate Thanksgiving, I drop the knitwear and build on a knit polo. Burgundy or forest green with khaki chinos looks seasonal by color alone. A cotton or suede-effect bomber covers cool mornings and aggressive air conditioning, and it should end right at the waistband; longer and it starts to look like a windbreaker. White leather sneakers with no-show socks keep it fresh. Brown loafers with matching crew socks if the hosts are a bit more formal.
14. Hoodie And Chore Jacket Thanksgiving Outfit

Yes, a hoodie can go to Thanksgiving, with conditions. It needs to be plain, midweight and clean, in cream, gray or muted green, and it needs structure on top. A navy or olive chore jacket does that, and I size it so the hood lies flat across the back rather than bunching under the collar. Straight black or dark blue jeans and leather sneakers keep the base tidy. I'd avoid this one if the host is formal, but for Friendsgiving, a travel day or a morning football game, it looks deliberate instead of sloppy.
15. Rugby Shirt Thanksgiving Outfit

A rugby shirt has enough personality to carry an outfit on its own. Navy and green or burgundy and cream stripes are the most seasonal. Because the stripe is busy, everything else stays solid: khaki or dark brown chinos, a plain belt, suede desert boots or casual loafers. Rugby shirts are heavy cotton and many are cut boxy, so I look for one that fits through the shoulders and doesn't flare at the hem. In colder weather, a navy field jacket over it works as long as the collar stays out.
16. Shacket And Black Jeans Thanksgiving Outfit

A shacket gives you a jacket's weight with a shirt's ease. Brushed cotton or wool-blend in tan or a quiet plaid over a black or cream tee, with straight black jeans, is a sharp, simple formula. If the shacket is patterned, every other piece goes solid. Black or dark brown Chelsea boots continue the dark line of the jeans and make the legs look longer. I like it for a day of temperature swings, because the outer layer comes off and you're still dressed. Buttoning just the middle gives it more shape for photos.
17. Monochrome Brown Thanksgiving Outfit

Tonal brown is one of my favorite ways to dress for November, but it only works if you vary texture. A dark chocolate mock neck, medium-brown pleated trousers and espresso suede loafers, with a camel coat on top, gives you four shades and four surfaces. Keep all of them in the same warm family; a cool, grayish taupe next to a reddish brown looks like a mistake. The camel coat lifts the whole look so it doesn't go flat in photos. A dark watch and a matching belt are enough.
18. Suit Without A Tie Thanksgiving Outfit

For a formal dinner or an upscale reservation, a suit with no tie keeps things friendly. Navy, charcoal or dark brown with a white or pale blue shirt, top button open. My main fitting note is comfort while seated: if the trousers pull at the thigh when you sit or the jacket strains across the back when you reach, it will feel tight after the second plate. A soft, unstructured suit is much easier to wear for a long meal. Brown loafers or lace-ups, a belt that matches, and a simple pocket square if the room calls for it.
19. Puffer Vest Thanksgiving Outfit

If the day includes a walk or a game in the yard, a puffer or quilted vest keeps your core warm and your arms free. Navy or olive over a checked shirt or fine crewneck, with dark jeans or tan chinos, is the easy version. I choose a slim, lightly filled vest over a fat one; heavy padding doubles your width indoors and you'll end up taking it off anyway. Weather-resistant boots or leather sneakers handle wet grass. A plaid scarf is good outside, but I'd leave it on the hook at the table.
20. Wool Coat Thanksgiving Outfit

A good wool coat is what the whole family sees first, so it's worth getting right. Camel, charcoal or navy, falling between upper thigh and knee, with enough room in the chest to button over a sweater and shirt. That last part is the one I check in the fitting room: wear your thickest planned layer when you try it on. Dark wool trousers or clean indigo jeans set the formality underneath. Leather Chelsea boots or lace-ups handle cold sidewalks. A cream or dark green scarf finishes it outdoors, and the outfit under the coat still needs to stand on its own once you're inside.
Adjusting These Looks for Shorter or Broader Builds
Most of these outfits are flexible, but a few details shift with your frame. None of them are rules, just what I adjust first.
If you're on the shorter side
Keep the top and trousers close in color, like the tonal brown or the shacket with black jeans, so the eye reads one long line. Pick jackets that end at the hip, not mid-thigh, and keep trouser hems with little or no break so fabric doesn't pool over the boots. Wide-wale corduroy and very chunky knits add bulk you don't need.
If you're broad through the chest or middle
Open layers are your friend. An unbuttoned cardigan, overshirt or soft sport coat creates a vertical stripe of the shirt beneath that slims the torso. Avoid tight sweater vests and clingy knit polos, which show every fold when you sit. Choose matte fabrics over shiny ones, and let a shirt fall straight from the chest rather than tucking it into a belt that pinches.
Gravy, Red Wine and a Good Sweater
Thanksgiving is hard on clothes. A few habits keep a nice knit or shirt from being ruined by dessert.
- Blot a spill with a dry napkin and cold water straight away; hot water can set protein stains like gravy.
- Grease on wool or cotton responds to a little dish soap worked in gently, then a cold rinse. Don't rub hard on knits, it felts the surface.
- Suede shoes and jackets hate wet spills. Let them dry naturally away from heat, then lift the nap with a suede brush.
- Hang sport coats and overcoats on a wide wooden hanger when you get home, never over a chair back, so the shoulders keep their shape.
The Host's Table Decides the Dress Code
Comfort and fit will matter more than any trend over a long Thanksgiving. Find out the dress code and the forecast first, then build from a few reliable pieces: a sweater or flannel, chinos or dark jeans, boots, and one layer you can take off. Seasonal color adds character, but it's the waistband, the shoulder seams and the shoes that decide if you're still comfortable at dessert. Get those right and you can stop thinking about your clothes the moment you walk in.
