Almost everyone has a blue that works on them. That's not true of orange, mustard or most greens, and it's why I start nervous clients with blue when they want more color. The trick is the shade. Powder blue, navy and cobalt sit in very different places on the color wheel, and the one that lights up your face might drain the woman next to you. The twenty outfits below run from soft sky tones to deep navy, each built as a full look with shoes and accessories. I've added notes on which shades suit which complexions, and how blue behaves next to denim, white, tan and silver.

Testing Powder, Navy and Cobalt Against Your Own Skin
Undertone charts and vein tests are unreliable on their own. What I do in a session is simpler, and you can do it at home with things already in your closet.
- Stand facing a window in daylight, with no makeup or very little. Artificial light shifts blue toward green or purple.
- Pull back your hair and hold a navy piece, then a cobalt piece, then a pale blue one under your chin, one at a time.
- Look at your skin, not the fabric. A good shade evens out redness and makes the eyes look brighter. A poor one makes shadows under the eyes deeper or the skin look gray or sallow.
- Repeat with a white top as a neutral reference, so you can see whether each blue is helping or hurting compared with no color at all.
As a rough guide, warmer complexions tend to look best in blues with a hint of green, like teal or turquoise, and in navy. Cooler complexions usually wear icy blue, cobalt and royal blue well. Deep skin often carries saturated cobalt and sapphire beautifully, while very fair, soft coloring tends to prefer muted blues like chambray and dusty blue. These are tendencies, though, and the window test overrules them every time.
1. Plus Size Blue Maxi Dress Outfit

A long dress in one color is the easiest way to look taller, and blue is forgiving enough to do it in almost any shade. I'd choose a wrap, empire or tiered cut if you want ease through the stomach and hips. A sky blue maxi reads light and summery, but pale blue can look gray on very fair, cool skin in overcast light, so check it near a window first. Navy or cobalt works better after dark. Gold hoops, a woven clutch and a light denim jacket finish it.
2. Plus Size Navy Blazer And Jeans Outfit

If I had to name one classic plus size blue outfit, it would be a navy blazer over jeans. Navy is the most universally wearable blue I know; it's dark enough to act like a neutral but softer than black near the face, which is why it suits people black tends to harshen. Pick a blazer that skims rather than one that buttons tight, then put a white tank or cream blouse underneath for contrast. Pushing the sleeves up to show the wrist breaks up the dark mass. Loafers or ballet flats keep it workable.
3. Plus Size Blue Wide Leg Pants Outfit

Wide leg pants carry a lot of fabric, so the shade you pick changes how much attention they draw. Navy recedes; cobalt pulls the eye to the legs. I usually suggest the brighter blues for women who like their lower half and want it noticed. Balance the volume with a defined top: a fitted white tee or a tucked blouse. The hem should nearly graze the floor in your shoes, so decide on platform sandals or flats before you hem them. Hoops and sunglasses make it easy for brunch or travel.
4. Plus Size Blue Denim Jacket Outfit

Medium-wash denim is a mid-tone blue with a slightly gray cast, which is why it sits comfortably over almost any color. Over a black midi dress it softens the black and makes the dress daytime-friendly. I'd pick a jacket that ends near the high hip or slightly cropped to define the waist; a long boxy jacket over a midi dress can cut you at the widest point. Roll the sleeves once. White sneakers and a tan crossbody keep it casual for weekends and errands.
5. Plus Size Cobalt Blue Jumpsuit Outfit

Cobalt is a high-saturation, cool blue, and it's one of the strongest colors you can wear head to toe. It suits clear, high-contrast coloring best: dark hair with fair or deep skin. On softer, muted complexions I sometimes see the jumpsuit wearing the woman instead. If that's you, add a scarf or a lighter top layer near the face. A wrap front and belt give shape, and a stretch crepe moves with you. Keep shoes and jewelry neutral so the color stays the point.
6. Plus Size Light Blue Shirt And White Jeans Outfit

Light blue next to the face is flattering on a wider range of people than plain white, because it's slightly softer and doesn't bounce as much harsh light onto the skin. I'd choose a relaxed poplin or linen-blend shirt and half-tuck it into straight white jeans. White denim needs to be a heavier weight so pockets don't show through. Tan sandals or espadrilles pick up a warmer note, which balances the cool blue. It's a reliable spring, summer and casual office outfit with very little effort.
7. Plus Size Blue Skirt And White Top Outfit

A white top over a blue skirt puts the brightest color at your face, which is usually what you want. Navy pleats feel classic; a cobalt satin skirt catches more light and reads dressier; a denim A-line is the most casual. With a flowy skirt, a fitted tee or tucked tank keeps the waist visible. I'd keep the shoes in a soft neutral, sandals or ballet flats, so the eye travels between the white and blue only. Good for brunch, museum days and casual workdays.
8. Plus Size Blue Matching Set Outfit

Matching sets solve the hardest part of color dressing: getting two blues to agree. Pieces cut from the same bolt are guaranteed to match. One continuous color from shoulder to hem creates a long, clean line, which is why I suggest sets to clients who want to look taller. Linen sets breathe in summer; knit sets pack better. Keep shoes neutral and jewelry minimal. Worn apart, the shirt goes with jeans and the pants go with a white tee, so you get three outfits from two pieces.
9. Plus Size Navy Midi Dress Outfit

Navy is softer than black but nearly as versatile, and on many skin tones it looks fresher in daylight photos. A navy midi in a wrap, shirt dress or knit with a defined waist can go from desk to dinner. For daytime, loafers, a tote and small gold hoops. For evening, block heels and one statement earring. Navy pairs well with cream, tan, blush and silver; it looks muddier next to brown leather that's too dark, so I'd choose cognac or tan accessories over chocolate.
10. Plus Size Blue Sweater And Black Pants Outfit

Blue against black is a high-contrast pairing, so the sweater does all the work. Royal blue pops; powder blue looks gentler and suits lighter, cooler coloring. I check the knit first: a tight-gauge cotton or merino holds its shape, while a fluffy acrylic pills at the underarms and where a bag strap rubs. If the sweater is oversized, a front tuck into higher-rise black pants keeps you from disappearing into it. Ankle boots or loafers and silver jewelry suit the cool palette.
11. Plus Size Blue Satin Blouse Outfit

Satin catches light, and a blue satin blouse shows its color more intensely than the same blue in cotton. Teal-blue and cobalt glow under evening lighting; navy satin stays quieter for work. With dark wash jeans and pointed flats, it's an easy dinner outfit. With black wide-leg trousers and a belt, it works for the office. Keep the fit relaxed but not oversized, because loose satin shows every fold. A V or wrap neckline opens up the chest.
12. Plus Size Blue Jeans And Blue Top Outfit

Blue on blue looks deliberate when the shades are clearly different, and accidental when they're almost the same. My rule is to keep at least two steps of contrast: dark wash jeans with a pale blue blouse, or chambray with cobalt. Similar shades that don't quite match are what look off. A tan belt or white sneakers break up the column if it feels like too much. For a sleeker version, navy on navy with silver accessories. Tonal dressing gives a long line from shoulder to shoe.
13. Plus Size Blue Floral Dress Outfit

With a floral dress, the base color matters more than the flowers, because it's what sits around your face and covers the most area. A navy or cornflower background suits most people; a powder blue base is gentler and works best on lighter, cool or neutral coloring. Small and medium prints are easier to wear than very large florals, which can overwhelm on a midi length. Nude sandals or white sneakers, plus a denim jacket or cropped cardigan when it's cool, keep it fresh for brunch and showers.
14. Plus Size Royal Blue Blazer And Trousers Outfit

Royal blue sits between navy and cobalt: bright enough to read as a color, dark enough to look professional. As a full suit it's confident; as a blazer over navy, white or black trousers it's easier to wear often. Under it, I like a simple white camisole or bodysuit so the blue stays in charge. Fit the blazer through the shoulders and the trousers through the hip; a suit that pulls anywhere looks cheap, however good the color. Pointed flats or block heels, and you're ready for a presentation.
15. Plus Size Blue Linen Pants Outfit

Linen breathes in heat, but colored linen fades faster than you'd expect, especially along the seat and knees where it's washed and rubbed most. Navy and chambray blue hide that wear better than bright ocean blues. A relaxed wide leg pair with a white tank or striped tee is vacation-ready. If you want shape, tuck the top or add a thin belt. Espadrilles and a straw bag keep the palette natural for beach trips and summer lunches.
16. Plus Size Blue Cardigan And Dress Outfit

A cardigan adds a second color without commitment, which makes it a good way to test whether a blue suits you. Navy over a cream slip dress looks soft; light blue over white is airy; cobalt over a black knit dress is bold. The knit sits close to your face, so I'd pick the shade with the most care here. A long cardigan suits a straighter dress, while a cropped one meets the waist and defines it. Ankle boots or flats depending on the season.
17. Plus Size Blue Tunic And Leggings Outfit

Comfort is the reason to choose a tunic and leggings, and color is how you keep it from looking like loungewear. A tunic in navy, teal, chambray or cobalt over black leggings reads put together; faux leather leggings add a sharper finish. The tunic should skim the body and end around mid-thigh, long enough to cover but not so long it looks like a short dress. A long necklace and a structured crossbody draw a vertical line. Good for travel days and errands.
18. Plus Size Blue Striped Shirt Outfit

Blue and white stripes are a classic because the white keeps the blue fresh near the face. Stripe width changes the effect: narrow stripes read as a soft blue from a distance, while wide stripes stay graphic. I'd go narrow if you want something quieter. Half-tuck it into dark jeans, white trousers or navy wide-leg pants and roll the sleeves. A brown belt and loafers add warmth to an otherwise cool palette. It's casual without looking plain.
19. Plus Size Blue Party Dress Outfit

Blue is the color I suggest most when someone is tired of wearing black to every party. Depending on the event, look at cobalt, sapphire, navy satin, or icy blue. Deep sapphire and navy flatter the widest range of skin tones; icy blue needs care, because pale cool shades can wash out warm complexions under yellow indoor lighting. A wrap, ruched midi or fit-and-flare cut with good structure or stretch is easiest. Silver heels and sparkly earrings, and keep everything else simple.
20. Plus Size Blue Athleisure Outfit

Athleisure looks styled when the blues coordinate on purpose. Navy leggings or joggers with a blue sweatshirt or zip hoodie, and a white tee underneath to break up the color, is my usual starting point. Mixing navy with powder blue softens the whole thing; a matching set looks more streamlined. Performance fabrics often have a sheen, so I'd pair a shiny legging with a matte top rather than doubling the shine. White sneakers and a belt bag keep it practical for walks and travel.
Why Blue Dye Fades and Rubs Off
Blue is one of the colors that shows wear fastest, and it can also transfer onto other things. A few habits keep it looking new.
Indigo transfer from dark denim
Raw and dark wash jeans shed indigo dye for the first several washes. That blue can rub onto a white bag, a pale sofa or the inside of light sneakers. Wash new dark denim inside out in cold water on its own a few times, and avoid carrying a cream leather bag against new jeans.
Sun and washing
Bright blues like cobalt and royal fade unevenly in strong sun, especially across the shoulders. Dry them in the shade or indoors, turn them inside out before washing, and use a detergent made for dark colors. Navy and chambray hide fading far better than saturated shades.
Matching blues bought at different times
Two navy pieces from different makers rarely match exactly, and side by side one often looks black and the other purple. If they don't match, let them contrast clearly instead: add a white or tan layer between them so the difference looks intended.
Start With Navy, Then Go Brighter
Blue gives you more range than almost any other color: navy for work, chambray for weekends, cobalt for parties. If you're new to wearing it, I'd begin with a navy blazer or midi dress, then try a light blue shirt near the face, and only then move to a cobalt jumpsuit or a bright party dress. Check each new shade in daylight next to your bare face. When the blue makes your skin look clearer rather than grayer, you've found one to keep.
