In summer, I build plus-size outfits from the top down. The top decides the neckline, the bra you'll wear, where your waist shows and how hot you'll feel by noon, and the bottoms follow from that. Below are 20 pairings: linen shirts with relaxed pants, ribbed tanks with flowy skirts, peplum tops with denim, light blouses with wide-leg trousers and more. None of them is about hiding. Each one uses fabric, neckline and proportion so you stay cool and look like you planned it.

Which Bra Goes Under Which Summer Neckline
Half the summer tops on this list fail at the fitting room door because nobody thought about what goes underneath. On a fuller bust, the bra decides whether a top looks right, so I match them before I buy.
- Tanks and ribbed tanks: a regular T-shirt bra, as long as the tank straps are wide enough to cover the bra straps.
- Square and scoop necks: a balconette or a bra with wide-set straps so nothing peeks at the corners.
- Off-shoulder and strapless: a strapless or longline with a firm band and silicone grip at the top edge.
- Halters: a convertible bra worn crisscross or halter style, or a top with a built-in shelf.
- Eyelet and sheer layers: a bra close to your skin tone, which shows less than white.
In heat, a bra with a mesh or cotton-lined band is noticeably cooler than one with thick foam cups. If a top only works with a bra you hate wearing, it will stay in the drawer.
1. Plus Size Linen Shirt With Wide Leg Pants

Linen shirt over wide-leg pants is the pairing I'd put first among plus size summer top outfits, because both pieces let air in. A relaxed button down in white, sand, soft blue or olive, half-tucked into high-waisted wide-leg pants, gives a waist without any squeeze. Open the top two buttons and roll the sleeves to the forearm; that opens the neckline into a V and keeps it from looking stiff. Flat leather sandals, hoops and a woven tote for errands, travel or a casual office.
2. Plus Size Ribbed Tank Top With Maxi Skirt

Ribbed tanks look polished only when they skim. Too tight and the ribs stretch open and show every line underneath. I look for straps at least an inch wide so a regular bra hides under them, and a scoop or square neckline. Under it, a high-waisted cotton, linen-blend or printed maxi skirt; the long skirt moves, the fitted tank holds the shape. Black, cream, rust, green or a soft floral. Slides, a crossbody and layered necklaces for the weekend.
3. Plus Size Peplum Top With Straight Leg Jeans

Peplums give a waist without anything tight around it, and the flare skims past the stomach. The seam where the peplum starts is the thing to check: it should land at your natural waist, not below the bust or down at the hip, or the flare sits in the wrong place. Cotton poplin, eyelet or a light textured fabric keeps it seasonal. Light-wash straight-leg jeans, block-heel sandals, a structured shoulder bag and gold jewelry. If the sleeves are big, keep everything else plain.
4. Plus Size Off Shoulder Top With Linen Shorts

Off-shoulder tops show the collarbone and shoulders, which pulls attention up. The practical question is the bra: most need a strapless with a firm band, and on a full bust that can be uncomfortable all day. A wide elastic neckline grips better and stays put while you move your arms. Pair it with high-waisted linen shorts that have a relaxed leg and a length you're comfortable with. White, coral, black or striped. Espadrilles, sunglasses and a raffia bag for a warm afternoon.
5. Plus Size Button Down Top With Denim Skirt

A light cotton or linen-blend button down over an A-line, midi or knee-length denim skirt is a pairing that can go casual or a little dressed up. The shirt adds structure, the denim keeps it easy. Tuck fully for a clean waist, or knot the front tails for the weekend. Denim skirts have little give, so I size to the hip and check that you can sit without the front slit gaping. White sneakers or tan sandals, a small shoulder bag and sunglasses.
6. Plus Size Crochet Top With Palazzo Pants

Crochet brings texture to an outfit no other summer top quite matches, but it is open by nature. Choose a lined crochet top or wear it over a cami in a matching color so the holes read as pattern, not skin. High-waisted palazzos in linen, rayon or a soft woven balance the texture with airflow. Crochet is heavier than it looks and stretches on a hanger, so I fold it. Neutral crochet with white, tan or olive pants, flat sandals, a straw tote and statement earrings. Resorts and outdoor markets.
7. Plus Size Wrap Top With Tailored Shorts

Wrap tops are one of the most flattering shapes for a full bust. The crossover forms a V and the tie sits at the waist. The common problem is gaping at the neckline when you lean forward; a wrap with a snap or a hidden hook at the cross point fixes that. Over tailored shorts with a clean waistband and some room at the thigh, it looks neater than a tee and shorts. Printed wrap with solid shorts, or a solid wrap with linen or striped shorts. Block sandals and a mini tote.
8. Plus Size Graphic Tee With Flowy Midi Skirt

Your favorite tee can look dressed up with the right skirt. Choose a graphic tee that fits smoothly at the shoulder and bust, not a huge one, and tuck it into a high-waisted midi with pleats, tiers or soft movement. A full front tuck can add bulk over a skirt waistband, so I often tuck only the front and let the sides drape. Sneakers keep it casual; platform sandals make it styled. Black tee with satin, vintage tee with poplin, neutral tee with florals. A denim jacket if the evening cools.
9. Plus Size Sleeveless Blouse With White Jeans

White jeans make any colored top look brighter, which is why I pair them with a sleeveless blouse in cobalt, pink, black, sage or a soft print. Look for a blouse with a soft drape, wider straps or a small pleat at the neckline, since that adds shape without cling. The armhole is the part to check on sleeveless blouses: too low and the bra shows, too high and it rubs. Straight or wide-leg white jeans, nude sandals, metallic flats or woven slides, and a structured tote.
10. Plus Size Smocked Top With Pull On Pants

Smocked tops stretch with you and still give shape, which makes them the most forgiving top on this list. A square-neck smocked top with pull-on pants in linen, gauze or a light woven feels like loungewear but looks finished. The smocking should sit on the body without pulling the elastic channels wide apart; if they spread open, size up. Wide leg or tapered depending on the silhouette you like. Flat sandals, a canvas tote and small hoops for travel and errands.
11. Plus Size Halter Top With Wide Leg Jeans

Halters show off the shoulders and balance a fuller lower body, but support decides whether you can wear one all day. Look for a comfortable neckline and real support through the bust, such as a built-in shelf, a wide band or a halter that works with a convertible bra. All the weight hangs from the neck, so a thin tie gets uncomfortable fast. Knit, jersey or woven, with high-waisted wide-leg jeans in light or mid wash. Platform sandals, a compact bag and an open shirt for cover.
12. Plus Size Eyelet Top With Chino Shorts

Eyelet adds texture without any extra layer. An eyelet top with chino shorts works in white, navy, yellow or soft green over khaki, cream or black chinos. White eyelet can show your bra through the holes, so I check it against a nude bra rather than a white one, which shows more. A slightly boxy eyelet top suits tailored shorts. Leather slides, a simple belt and a woven crossbody for family outings and sightseeing.
13. Plus Size Tunic Top With Slim Crop Pants

For more coverage on a hot day, a tunic over slim crop pants is the swap I'd suggest. Cotton, rayon or linen-blend tunics move and don't trap heat. The slim crop pant shows a bit of ankle, and that keeps a long top from overwhelming you. Tunic length matters: mid-thigh is easiest; past the knee and you need a shorter pant or the outfit gets heavy. Pointed flats, simple sandals or low wedges, and a long necklace for a vertical line. Offices, travel, everyday.
14. Plus Size Puff Sleeve Top With Bermuda Shorts

Puff sleeves add width at the shoulder, which balances a fuller hip nicely, but only if the body of the top is fitted. A loose puff-sleeve top over a loose short turns into a lot of fabric. Choose a fitted bodice or a waist detail, then pair it with denim, linen or tailored Bermuda shorts. On a full upper arm, I'd keep the puff above the widest part, not ending right at it. Strappy sandals, a crossbody and simple earrings in a quiet palette.
15. Plus Size Cotton Poplin Top With Cargo Pants

Poplin's tight weave holds a shape, and that crispness pairs well with soft utility pants. A poplin top with a square neck, button front or a little sleeve volume over olive, beige, black or stone cargo pants. Pick cargos that drape; stiff canvas with bellowed pockets adds width at the thigh. Poplin does wrinkle when packed, so this is a good outfit for a day out rather than a long flight. Sport sandals, a sleek belt bag and sunglasses for errands or city plans.
16. Plus Size Sheer Layer Top With Tank And Trousers

A sheer top over a tank feels dressier than a single layer while staying cool. Mesh, chiffon or gauze over a fitted tank in the same or a tonal color, so the layers look intentional. A contrasting tank under sheer fabric shows its straps and edges clearly, which is fine if you want that, but tonal is softer. High-waisted trousers in linen or a draped fabric keep it breathable. Flat sandals casually, heeled mules for dinner. Keep accessories quiet; the sheer layer is already the detail.
17. Plus Size Tie Front Top With High Waist Skirt

Tie-front tops shape the waist exactly where you tie them, so tie them at the natural waist, not low on the hip. Over a midi, maxi or A-line cotton skirt, the knot sits on top of the waistband and replaces a belt. A small print up top with a solid skirt is easy; matching colors look like a set. If the tie leaves a gap of skin at the front that you don't want, wear a fitted cami underneath. Espadrilles, a mini bag and sunglasses for brunch or vacation.
18. Plus Size Square Neck Top With Linen Trousers

Square necklines frame the collarbone without plunging, which makes them one of my favorite cuts for a full bust. A fitted or lightly structured square-neck top tucked into high-waisted linen trousers in beige, white, navy or black. The neckline should sit wide enough to sit flat; too narrow and it pulls into a curve. Flat sandals for day, block heels to polish it. A slim belt and structured bag make it office-ready. Linen trousers bag at the knee by afternoon, which is normal.
19. Plus Size Kimono Top With Denim Shorts

A kimono-style top tied, wrapped or worn open over a simple tank gives coverage without weight. With denim shorts, look for a comfortable rise and room through the leg. The flowing top moves as you walk and covers the upper arms and hip. A printed kimono top over neutral basics, or a solid one with distressed or cuffed shorts. I'd keep the top's hem a few inches past the shorts' hem, not level with it. Flat sandals, a straw bag and sunglasses for a vacation day.
20. Plus Size Satin Cami With Wide Leg Trousers

Satin and matte fabrics side by side make an outfit look dressed up with almost no effort, so a satin cami over wide-leg trousers is how I'd go dressy without a dress. Adjustable straps matter; satin slides, and a cami that keeps slipping will annoy you all night. Choose a secure neckline and high-waisted, light trousers for balance. Satin shows sweat and creases, so I'd keep this for evenings. Heeled sandals, a clutch, delicate jewelry, and a light blazer or open linen shirt for cover.
Balancing a Top Against the Volume of the Bottoms
Every outfit above follows the same quiet rule, and once you see it you can build your own. Volume goes in one place. A fitted tank goes with a maxi skirt or palazzos; a boxy eyelet top goes with tailored shorts; a flowing tunic goes with slim crop pants.
When both halves are loose, the outfit loses your outline and can look heavier than you are. When both are tight, it feels hot and restrictive. If you love a loose top and loose pants together, add one marker of shape: a half tuck, a knot, a belt, or a neckline that shows the collarbone.
Telling Whether a Summer Top Will Survive the Season
Summer tops get washed more than anything else in the closet, so construction shows quickly. Before buying, I check a few things. Smocking should use soft elastic thread that springs back when stretched; if it stays loose, it will sag after a few washes. Eyelet and crochet should have finished edges around each opening, or they fray. Ribbed knits should recover when you pull a section sideways. And satin and chiffon seams should be finished neatly inside, since they unravel at raw edges.
Start With the Neckline and Build Down
Summer tops work best when they balance comfort, shape and breathable fabric, and none of these outfits needs complicated styling. A good top, the right bottoms and simple accessories cover errands, work, travel, brunch and evenings. Lean on linen, cotton, gauze, soft knits, poplin and light wovens. Pick necklines and waist details you like seeing in the mirror, then finish with sandals, sneakers and a bag that suit the day. Two or three of these formulas, repeated in different colors, can carry a whole summer.
