The hardest weeks of the year to dress for are the ones where you leave the house in a chill and come home sweating. I don't fix that by buying an autumn wardrobe in August. I fix it by keeping the breathable summer base and changing three things around it: one removable layer, a darker color or two, and shoes that cover the foot. Lightweight jackets, blazers, loafers and ankle boots do most of that work, and summer dresses and shorts can keep going longer than most people expect. Each look below is a full outfit with a plan for the moment the temperature moves, whether your day is casual, office-bound or somewhere in between.

A Day That Starts at 55 and Ends at 80
That swing is what makes these weeks so awkward, and it's why I plan transitional outfits backward from the warmest hour, not the coldest. If the base layer is comfortable at 80, you only need to solve the morning, and one good removable piece does that. Dress for the morning instead and you spend the afternoon carrying a sweater you can't take off because there's nothing presentable underneath.
When I put a transitional outfit together, I run through four checks:
- The base has to stand on its own. A tank, tee, slip dress or shirt dress should look finished without the top layer, because you will take it off.
- The removable layer should be easy to carry. A cardigan, linen blazer, denim jacket or light trench folds over an arm or a bag strap; a chunky knit or padded coat does not.
- The shoes decide the season more than the clothes do. Closed shoes such as loafers, flats, sneakers or ankle boots move a summer outfit into autumn faster than any jacket.
- One darker shade is enough. Swapping a white or pastel piece for olive, rust, brown or navy is often all the color change an outfit needs.
Mornings are also when dew and damp pavements catch out canvas shoes and suede. If the grass is wet on your route, I'd start in leather and save the suede for a dry afternoon.
1. Slip Dress With Cardigan Outfit

I keep a silky slip dress in rotation well into October, because the fabric was never the problem; the bare arms were. A midi length in black, chocolate brown, olive or a muted floral reads less like beachwear than a short one. Over it I put a slightly oversized cardigan, buttoned on a cold morning and draped over the shoulders by lunch. The one thing to check is static: a knit rubbing over satin can cling, so a cotton or wool cardigan behaves better than acrylic. Loafers give it polish, clean sneakers relax it, and a structured shoulder bag stops the whole thing looking too fluid. Small hoops and sunglasses finish it, and sheer tights slot in later without changing anything else.
2. White Shirt With Wide Leg Jeans Outfit

A crisp white shirt with full-length denim is the outfit I reach for when I can't read the weather. The wash is what moves it into autumn: medium or dark wide-leg or straight-leg jeans look seasonal in a way pale summer denim doesn't. I front-tuck the shirt so the waist still shows on wide legs, and roll the sleeves to just below the elbow once it warms up. A brown leather belt brings in the autumn color without another layer. Shoes follow the forecast: loafers or ballet flats on mild days, slim ankle boots when it's damp, and check that the wide hem clears the boot rather than bunching on it. Carry a structured tote, wear a simple pendant, and keep a lightweight trench nearby for the evening.
3. Tank Top With Linen Blazer Outfit

For the day that's summer at lunch and autumn by six, I build from a fitted cotton tank and relaxed tailored trousers, then add a linen or linen-blend blazer. Linen breathes better than wool in the warm hours, but it wrinkles at the elbows and across the back once you've sat in it, so a blend with some viscose or cotton holds its shape longer. Cream, camel, taupe and chocolate brown make the palette feel seasonal. Leather sandals still work on warm days; swap to loafers as the temperature falls. A medium handbag, slim belt and quiet jewelry keep it neat, and the blazer folds over your arm when you don't need it. It's my default for a casual office, a meeting or a long lunch.
4. Floral Midi Dress With Denim Jacket Outfit

Floral midi dresses don't have to go into storage in September; you just need the darker prints. Burgundy, navy, forest green or brown florals sit next to autumn colors without fighting them. A classic denim jacket handles breezy mornings, and the cut changes the mood: a slightly cropped one marks the waist, an oversized one makes it feel like a weekend. The mistake I see most is keeping the strappy sandals, which makes the whole thing still read as July. Change to white sneakers, leather clogs or ankle boots, carry a tan or dark brown crossbody, and add simple gold jewelry. Later in the season a thin scarf or opaque tights add the warmth.
5. T-Shirt With Satin Midi Skirt Outfit

A plain tee over a satin skirt works because the two fabrics argue a little, and that tension is what makes it look intended. I tuck a fitted white, black or striped tee into a bias-cut midi skirt. Bias-cut satin skims the hip and shows every ridge underneath, so a thick tuck or a bulky waistband is the first thing I check in the mirror; a thinner tee or a half-tuck usually solves it. Rust, olive, burgundy, navy or espresso skirts feel right for the season. A cropped cardigan or lightweight leather jacket covers the cooler hours, and low sneakers, loafers or pointed ankle boots ground it. A structured bag balances the softness, and a slim belt adds shape if you want it.
6. Denim Shorts With Oversized Shirt Outfit

Denim shorts can last into early autumn, mostly in warmer climates and mostly when the rest of the outfit looks like it knows what month it is. I go for high-rise, mid-length shorts with a ribbed tank or crew-neck tee, then an oversized cotton or striped button-down left open for air. Loafers with ankle socks are what make it look autumnal rather than leftover; clean leather sneakers keep it casual. Add a proper belt, a structured crossbody and understated sunglasses. Heavily distressed shorts pull it straight back to the beach, so skip those if you want it polished. As it cools, trade the shorts for longer Bermudas or put sheer tights under a tailored pair.
7. Knit Vest With Tailored Trousers Outfit

A sleeveless knit vest is the gentlest way to start wearing knitwear again. A fine-gauge one works alone on a warm afternoon and over a lightweight white shirt once it cools; I check that the shirt collar lies flat over the vest neckline rather than buckling under it. High-waisted tailored trousers in black, camel, gray or chocolate brown carry it, and a straight or wide leg keeps it current and comfortable. Loafers, pointed flats or minimal sneakers all suit it. A slim belt and a structured tote make it office-ready, and small earrings plus a simple watch are enough. A trench goes over the top later, so this one lasts the whole transition.
8. Shirt Dress With Ankle Boots Outfit

Cotton shirt dresses let air in on warm days and still cover enough for early autumn. A midi in olive, navy, cream, rust or a classic stripe is the easiest to style. You can use the matching tie, but I usually swap it for a leather belt because the contrast reads more seasonal. Ankle boots in tan, brown or black change the dress faster than anything else, and I look at where the hem falls: a midi that ends a hand's width above the boot top looks deliberate, while one that just grazes it looks unfinished. Carry a structured shoulder bag, add hoops or a fine chain, roll the sleeves in the heat and lower them later. A cropped jacket or long cardigan covers the cold end of the day.
9. Striped T-Shirt With Trench Coat Outfit

Striped tee, straight-leg jeans, lightweight trench. I've never found a transitional outfit more dependable. The tee breathes, and the trench blocks wind and a light shower without making you overheat the way a padded jacket would. Keep the denim blue or black with little distressing. A beige, khaki or olive trench goes with most of what you already own, and I size it so it closes over a sweater, since that's how you'll wear it by November. Loafers or white sneakers, a practical leather tote, and a silk scarf at the neck or knotted on the bag handle for color. Push the sleeves up in a mild afternoon and button it fully once the sun goes down.
10. Maxi Skirt With Lightweight Sweater Outfit

A flowing maxi skirt bridges the seasons once it meets a breathable sweater. I pair cotton, satin or a soft print with a fine-knit crew neck in cream, camel, gray or burgundy. The proportions are what make or break it: a full skirt plus a loose sweater swallows most people, so either tuck the knit slightly at the waist or pick a cropped cut that just meets the waistband. Ballet flats, loafers or ankle boots ground the length, and a shoulder bag, watch and small earrings are plenty. If the afternoon warms up, wear a fitted tank underneath and drape the sweater around your shoulders.
11. Jumpsuit With Cropped Jacket Outfit

Sleeveless jumpsuits make transitional dressing simple because the whole base is one decision. I like a relaxed cut in black, khaki, navy, rust or dark denim, topped with a cropped utility jacket, denim jacket or lightweight bomber that keeps the waist in view. A long jacket over a jumpsuit tends to hide its shape and make you look boxy, which is why I keep it short. Sneakers make it daytime, loafers or low block-heel boots polish it, and a narrow leather belt helps if the cut is loose. A medium tote or crossbody and small hoops finish it. Take the jacket off when it warms up and the outfit underneath still holds together.
12. Bermuda Shorts With Blazer Outfit

Tailored Bermuda shorts give more coverage than summer cut-offs and stay comfortable on warm transitional days. Pair them with a fitted tank, a fine-knit tee or a lightweight button-down, then add a relaxed blazer in a coordinating neutral so it reads like a set. The length matters more than people think: Bermudas that stop just above the knee flatter most legs, while ones that cut at mid-knee can look shorter and heavier. Loafers with light socks give the autumn note, slingback flats keep it airy, and a leather belt and structured handbag echo the tailoring. Black, cream, taupe, navy and brown are the easiest to mix. I'd pick this in warm climates where wool and full-length trousers are still too much.
13. Ribbed Dress With Leather Jacket Outfit

A fitted ribbed midi dress gives stretch, comfort and enough coverage for a day you can't predict. I choose sleeveless or short-sleeved so it works alone in the warmest hours, then add a leather or faux-leather jacket for the clear autumn change. Ribbed knits cling, so I look at it from the side before leaving: a smoothing slip underneath helps if the fabric is thin. Black is classic; deep brown, burgundy or olive feels softer. Ankle boots, streamlined sneakers or leather mules all suit it, with a practical shoulder bag and minimal jewelry. A slim belt adds definition if you want it, and it stays comfortable through a long, busy day.
14. Tank Dress With Button-Down Shirt Outfit

Tank dresses are the easiest summer pieces to carry into autumn, and an open shirt is how I usually start. Wear a fitted midi or maxi in black, olive, brown or charcoal, then throw an oversized button-down over it like a light jacket, open or tied at the waist. The knot should sit at your natural waist or slightly above; tie it low on the hip and it shortens the legs. White, blue stripe, chambray or a muted plaid each give the dress a different personality. Leather sneakers, clogs or ankle boots, a crossbody bag and a chunky bracelet or watch complete it. When it turns properly cold, trade the shirt for a cardigan or utility jacket and add tights under the same dress.
15. Graphic T-Shirt With Utility Jacket Outfit

A graphic tee works as a transitional base as long as it's the only loud thing in the outfit. I tuck it into straight-leg jeans, relaxed trousers or a solid midi skirt, then layer an olive, tan or navy utility jacket over it for light warmth and some texture. Cotton twill jackets block wind better than you'd guess and soften with every wash. Clean sneakers or sturdy leather loafers keep it comfortable, a crossbody leaves your hands free, and small earrings stop it getting busy. Sleeves rolled on warm days, down after sunset. It's what I'd wear for errands, travel days and slow weekends.
16. Blouse With Dark Wash Jeans Outfit

Soft blouses keep the summer comfort; dark denim brings the deeper autumn tone. I choose a light blouse with short sleeves, a little volume or a small floral print, and pair it with straight-leg, bootcut or wide-leg jeans in indigo or washed black. With a fuller blouse, a full or partial tuck is non-negotiable, otherwise the volume sits over the hip and the jeans lose their line. Loafers, pointed flats or suede ankle boots depending on the temperature, though I'd leave the suede at home if rain is forecast because it darkens and spots. A brown belt and matching bag warm it up, and gold or silver jewelry finishes it. A lightweight blazer covers cool mornings.
17. Matching Linen Set With Loafers Outfit

A matching linen set outlasts summer once the shoes and accessories get more serious. A button-down linen shirt with relaxed pants in cream, stone, olive, navy or chocolate brown is the base; a fitted tank underneath lets the shirt hang open in the warm hours. Beach sandals come off and polished loafers or leather ballet flats go on, with a dark belt, structured tote and simple jewelry. Pale linen can be more sheer than it looks in the fitting room, so I check it in daylight and wear smooth underlayers close to my skin tone. Later in the season a light trench or cardigan goes over the set while the breathable base stays put.
18. Mini Skirt With Lightweight Knit Outfit

Mini skirts stay practical in mild autumn weather when everything else adds coverage and texture. I pair an A-line denim, corduroy or tailored mini with a lightweight crew-neck knit, and keep the knit hem short or tucked so the skirt doesn't disappear under it. Loafers, ballet flats or ankle boots, not open sandals. Ankle socks add warmth and make the seasonal change obvious. Carry a structured shoulder bag, and thread a simple belt through the loops if there are any. Camel, burgundy, navy, olive and cream keep the palette autumnal. When it drops further, add sheer or opaque tights and a cropped jacket; the short jacket keeps the proportions balanced over a short skirt.
19. Cargo Pants With Fitted Tank Outfit

Cargo pants are what I put on when comfort is the whole point of the day. A relaxed cotton pair in olive, khaki, charcoal or black needs a fitted ribbed tank or bodysuit on top, because loose on loose turns utilitarian fast. An open button-down, cropped cardigan or lightweight bomber gives adjustable coverage. Streamlined sneakers, leather clogs or chunky loafers all work; very slim shoes look lost under the volume. A compact shoulder bag and hoops pull it toward polished. I keep the palette to two or three shades, and the fitted top plus structured accessories are what make the pants look chosen rather than thrown on.
20. Cardigan With Straight Leg Jeans Outfit

Some mornings you need an outfit that takes no planning at all. Straight-leg jeans and a lightweight cardigan worn as a top, buttoned fully or open at the neck over a simple camisole. Cream, red, chocolate brown, forest green and soft gray all suit the transition. I'd pick a cotton or wool-blend knit here; cheap acrylic pills at the underarms and where a bag strap rubs within a few wears. A leather belt and loafers, ballet flats or ankle boots keep it tidy, a structured handbag sharpens the denim, and a pendant fills the open neckline. If the afternoon heats up, take the cardigan off and the camisole carries on alone.
Linen, Satin and Cotton After Labor Day
People ask me which summer fabrics they're allowed to keep wearing. Honestly, most of them, as long as you know how each one behaves when the air cools.
Linen
It breathes beautifully and dries fast, but it offers almost no warmth and creases wherever you bend. In autumn I treat it as a base layer, not an outer one, and I lean toward the darker shades. Cream linen in October can look like you forgot to change over your closet; olive or chocolate linen doesn't.
Satin and silk
Slip dresses and bias skirts layer well because they're thin and smooth, so a knit glides over them. They do show water spots, so they're not my pick for a showery day, and a wool cardigan clings to them less than a synthetic one.
Cotton jersey and poplin
Tees, tanks and shirt dresses are the workhorses of this season. They handle the warm hours, wash easily and sit flat under a jacket. Thin white jersey turns see-through quickly once it's worn and washed often, so I keep a second plain tee for layering rather than relying on an old favorite.
Socks, Tights and the Week the Sandals Go Away
Feet get cold before the rest of you, so footwear is usually where the season actually turns. I move in stages rather than all at once. First the strappy sandals become loafers or ballet flats worn bare. Then a fine ankle sock appears with loafers and sneakers, which looks intentional if it's a solid color that picks up something in the outfit. Sheer tights come next under dresses and skirts, and opaque tights with ankle boots once mornings are properly cold.
If you're breaking in new leather loafers or boots for autumn, start in the transitional weeks while your days are short and easy. Wear them for an hour or two at home first. Stiff new leather rubs at the heel and the top of the toes, and it's far better to find that out on the sofa than halfway through a commute.
One Base, One Removable Layer, Closed Shoes
None of these outfits asks you to replace your wardrobe. Dresses, shorts, skirts, linen and tank tops stay in play once they meet a cardigan, blazer or jacket and a pair of loafers or boots. If you take one habit from the list, make it this: dress for the warm part of the day, then add a single piece you can remove and carry for the cool ends. Darker neutrals and structured accessories do the rest of the seasonal work. Adjust everything for your own climate and routine, and you'll get through the in-between weeks without a single panic purchase.
