Fall in the UK asks a lot of one outfit. It has to cope with a cold start, a bright mild lunch, a shower you didn't see coming and a chilly walk home, and still look like you on all four. The outfits below are built the way I'd pack for that: a coat that handles weather, shoes you can walk in, and knits and shirts that work alone or layered. There's a trench, a barn jacket, a corduroy suit, a cape and a raincoat among them. Swap the colors and fabric weights for your body, your job and where you live.

Visiting Britain in October? A Packing List That Covers Every Forecast
If you're travelling to the UK in autumn rather than living there, the weather is the hardest part to pack for. Daytime temperatures tend to sit somewhere between about 8 and 16°C, rain arrives in short bursts most days, and indoor spaces like trains, shops and museums are often warm. I plan a trip wardrobe in layers so you're never stuck in a heavy sweater on a heated train.
- One weatherproof coat: a lined trench or a hooded raincoat with room for a knit under it.
- Two pairs of shoes: waterproof boots with a grippy sole, plus a lighter pair like leather sneakers or loafers for dry days.
- Two or three fine knits in merino or a wool blend, which layer thinly and can be worn several times between washes.
- Two pairs of trousers or jeans and one midi skirt or knit dress, in colors that all go with the coat.
- A scarf, a compact umbrella and a zip-top bag.
Keep the palette to two or three neutrals plus one accent, so every top works with every bottom. Ten or eleven pieces will cover a week comfortably.
1. Trench Coat Fall Outfit With Straight-Leg Jeans

If I could only pack one coat for a British autumn, it would be a trench. Stone, camel or olive over a fitted crewneck and straight blue jeans gives you a clean, practical base; straight denim keeps the long coat from looking formal. I'd choose loafers on dry days and low-heeled ankle boots if rain is forecast. A structured crossbody frees your hands on the commute, and a light scarf comes off when the afternoon warms. Knee length suits petite frames best. Check the trench has a storm flap and a belt you can cinch against wind.
2. Barn Jacket Fall Outfit With Corduroy Pants

A barn jacket travels well because cotton canvas shrugs off creases and dirt. Pick a boxy one in olive, chocolate, navy or tan, ideally with a corduroy collar, over a cream shirt or fine knit. Straight or wide cords in dark brown, rust or camel add texture without looking matched. Retro sneakers, leather boots or chunky loafers with socks all work; boots for fields, sneakers for streets. Buy the jacket a little roomy so a sweater fits under it in November. A roomy tote finishes it.
3. Leather Jacket Fall Outfit With A Knit Midi Skirt

Leather over a knit midi skirt is softer than it sounds. A fitted top or thin turtleneck in cream, gray or black, then a ribbed skirt that falls below the knee and moves as you walk. The leather jacket, brown or black and slightly oversized, cuts the breeze that a cardigan wouldn't. Knee-high boots tuck under the hem; ankle boots need opaque tights. Ribbed knit skirts can seat out at the back after a lot of sitting, so I'd save this for days on your feet. Tuck the top and choose a cropped jacket for more waist.
4. Oversized Blazer Fall Outfit With Wide-Leg Pants

An oversized blazer with fluid wide-leg trousers looks polished but feels like loungewear, which makes it my pick for long travel days that end in a meeting. Charcoal, navy, chocolate or deep olive with a white or pale blue knit underneath. The hem is the detail I check: it should skim the shoe, because long wide trousers drag on wet pavement and the bottom inch turns dark and gritty. Loafers for walking, block-heel boots for height. A slim belt, structured bag and simple earrings finish it.
5. Cardigan Fall Outfit With A Satin Midi Skirt

Cardigan and satin is one of my favorite contrasts: matte knit against a fabric that catches light. Choose a crew or V-neck cardigan in burgundy, gray, forest green or oatmeal and a bias-cut midi skirt. Tonal feels quiet, contrast feels braver. A fitted camisole underneath lets you lose the cardigan in the afternoon. Button it and tuck the front lightly into the waistband for shape. Flats or loafers suit mild days; ankle boots once it's cold. Satin water-spots in rain, so I'd watch the forecast before wearing this one.
6. Sweater Dress Fall Outfit With Knee-High Boots

When I don't want to think, I reach for a sweater dress. Ribbed or softly structured midi knit in camel, black, burgundy or dark green, with knee-high leather or suede boots disappearing under the hem so the leg reads as one line. A removable belt gives a waist when you want one. Choose a knit with weight but not bulk, or it bunches under a coat. A long trench or wool coat goes over it, plus a structured handbag and a patterned scarf for color near the face. Rolled, it packs into a small space without creasing.
7. Double Denim Fall Outfit With A Wool Coat

Double denim works in autumn once a wool coat covers half of it. A mid-blue denim shirt with dark indigo straight jeans, so the two washes differ clearly; or pale chambray with black jeans for a softer version. Matching washes exactly is what makes double denim look like a uniform. A narrow belt marks the break between shirt and jeans. Charcoal, camel or navy wool on top, then pointed ankle boots to lengthen the leg or white sneakers for a casual day. A leather shoulder bag finishes it. Roll the cuffs a little.
8. Quilted Jacket Fall Outfit With Leggings

Quilted jacket and leggings is the outfit for dog walks and school runs, and it looks finished as long as the leggings are thick and matte. Thin, shiny athletic leggings look like gym wear the moment they're under a proper jacket. Choose a hip-length or longer jacket in olive, navy, black or chocolate over a striped long-sleeve, sweatshirt or half-zip. Retro sneakers and crew socks for dry days, waterproof Chelsea boots and a compact umbrella for wet ones. A cap reads sporty; a wool scarf more classic. A durable crossbody keeps your hands free.
9. Wool Coat Fall Outfit With A Turtleneck And Jeans

Wool coat, turtleneck, jeans: the combination I'd trust for a museum, a commute and dinner in one day. A fine-gauge turtleneck in cream, black, gray or burgundy, dark straight or slightly flared jeans, and a tailored coat in camel, charcoal or navy. I check that the coat has room across the shoulders for a knit before I buy it, because a tight coat over a sweater pulls at the buttons. Low block-heel ankle boots, a structured tote and simple gold or silver jewelry finish it. A checked scarf adds pattern and comes off indoors.
10. Plaid Blazer Fall Outfit With A Mini Skirt And Tights

A plaid blazer with a mini skirt has an academic feel that's easy to keep modern. Wear a fitted turtleneck or crisp button-down under an oversized checked blazer, then a plain A-line mini in black, charcoal, navy or chocolate with opaque tights. Only one piece should be checked; two plaids fight each other. Chunky loafers look preppy, and knee boots handle colder days better. A structured satchel or top-handle bag suits the tailoring. If a mini isn't comfortable, use the same formula with a knee-length or midi skirt.
11. Utility Jacket Fall Outfit With Cargo Pants

Utility jackets were designed for weather and pockets, which is why they suit a damp UK autumn. Pair an olive, khaki or brown field jacket with a soft fitted tee or ribbed knit, and cargo trousers in a coordinating neutral with a straight or slightly tapered leg. Roomy cargos need a closer top, or the whole outfit loses shape. Leather sneakers for town, lace-up boots for muddy paths. A nylon crossbody or leather backpack and a light scarf finish it. Push the sleeves up on warmer afternoons.
12. Striped Sweater Fall Outfit With White Jeans

White jeans don't need to be packed away after August. The trick is weight: heavier denim looks right in cool weather, while thin white jeans look like holiday clothes and show everything underneath. Wear them with a navy, burgundy or chocolate striped sweater, then tan suede ankle boots or dark leather loafers to anchor the pale leg. A camel trench or navy pea coat keeps it light. A structured brown bag and a leather belt matching the shoes finish it. A thin thermal under the sweater on cold days. Early fall is its best window, before the roads get muddy.
13. Corduroy Suit Fall Outfit With A T-Shirt

A corduroy suit is the most useful thing I'd add to a small fall wardrobe, because it's three outfits: the suit, the blazer with jeans, and the trousers with a sweater. Choose rust, chocolate, navy, forest green or camel, relaxed in cut, with a plain white or cream tee underneath. Fine-wale cord looks smarter and smoother; wide wale is more casual. Leather sneakers for daytime, heeled loafers or ankle boots for the office. A compact shoulder bag and minimal jewelry let the texture do the work. Cord does flatten at the knees and seat over time, so steam rather than iron it.
14. Slip Dress Fall Outfit With A Chunky Sweater

Pulling a chunky sweater over a summer slip dress is how I stretch one piece across two seasons. Use a midi slip in black, olive, chocolate or a muted print, with an oversized crewneck over it and the dress hem showing below. Knee-high boots keep the legs warm and the line long. If the sweater swallows you, belt the dress underneath and fold the knit's hem up slightly. A leather jacket or long coat adds the next layer, and a structured crossbody and simple earrings finish it. Both pieces pack flat, which is why it's in my travel rotation.
15. Cape Fall Outfit With Straight-Leg Pants

A cape gives you room to layer underneath without a bulky sleeve, so the rest has to be slim. Wear a fitted turtleneck and straight trousers in black, navy or dark brown, then knee-high boots that add coverage without visual weight. Long leather gloves cover the forearms a cape leaves open. I'd choose one with arm slits over a fully open poncho; the open kind rides up when you carry a bag or hold a rail on a train. Petite women usually look better in a shorter hem. A structured handbag and quiet jewelry finish it.
16. Raincoat Fall Outfit With A Knit Dress

On days when rain is a certainty, I build the outfit from the coat inward. A knee-length or midi knit dress that you can move in, then a waterproof raincoat in navy, olive, cream or something bright enough to be seen on a gray afternoon. Look for an adjustable hood, sealed seams and enough room for a knit underneath. Waterproof Chelsea boots with textured soles and opaque tights keep your legs dry and warm. A zip-top crossbody stops rain getting in. Tuck the scarf inside the coat so it doesn't soak up water.
17. Bomber Jacket Fall Outfit With A Pleated Midi Skirt

A bomber over a pleated midi swaps a skirt's polish for something more relaxed. Start with a fitted crewneck knit or plain tee, then a flowing pleated skirt in black, burgundy, gray or metallic charcoal, and a cropped or waist-length bomber; a longer jacket hides the pleats. Satin bombers look dressier, while nylon or cotton handles weather better. Retro sneakers for walking, loafers or ankle boots for a smarter version. Keep the top tucked so the waist shows under the jacket. A compact shoulder bag and sunglasses finish it.
18. Shearling Jacket Fall Outfit With Black Pants

Shearling is the warmest jacket on this list, and it's heavy, so I keep everything else smooth. A brown, tan or black aviator jacket, a lightweight neutral sweater, and straight or slightly flared black trousers that let the coat lead. Chunky ankle boots match its weight and grip damp pavement. Add a soft scarf if the collar leaves your neck bare. Real shearling dislikes heavy rain and needs time to dry slowly; faux shearling gives a similar look with easier care. A medium leather tote or crossbody finishes it.
19. Rugby Shirt Fall Outfit With Barrel-Leg Jeans

Rugby shirts are cut from heavy cotton, so on a mild day one works almost like a light sweater. Choose navy, burgundy, forest green or cream stripes and pair them with barrel-leg or relaxed straight jeans that end cleanly above the shoe. Loafers with visible socks lean preppy; retro sneakers keep it casual. A light trench or waxed jacket goes over the top when the weather turns. Tuck the front into the waistband for more shape. A canvas tote or small crossbody finishes it. Good for coffee runs and long walking days.
20. Duster Coat Fall Outfit With Tailored Pants

A long duster coat drapes from the shoulder in one straight line, and it makes plain separates look intentional. Wear it over a relaxed button-down and tailored straight or wide-leg trousers. Charcoal, chocolate, navy and deep aubergine look rich together; a pale shirt stops it going too dark. Square-toe pumps for smart settings, sleek ankle boots for walking. A structured top-handle bag suits the long lines. With an oversized coat, keep the trousers neatly tailored at the ankle. Belt it when you want a waist. I'd pack this for business travel.
Cobbles, Station Stairs and Wet Grass
Most UK days out involve far more walking than people expect: uneven old streets, long platforms, stairs at stations, and wet grass in parks and gardens. Footwear is where I see visitors and commuters regret their choices most often, so here's how I judge a pair before it goes in the bag.
Turn the shoe over first. A rubber sole with some tread grips wet stone; a smooth leather sole slips on it. Thin, stiff soles and narrow stiletto heels catch between cobbles, so for older town centres a block heel or flat is safer. Next, check how water gets in. Leather resists light rain when treated, suede and canvas soak through, and ballet flats let water in at the low sides even when the upper is leather.
Finally, never take brand-new boots on a long walking day. Leather needs several shorter wears to soften at the heel and flex point. Pack blister plasters anyway, and a spare pair of socks for the days the forecast lies.
Pack the Coat First, Then Build Around It
Every outfit here comes back to the same few things: layers you can take off, shoes that grip, and a coat that suits the weather. You don't need a new wardrobe for any of them. Jeans, tailored trousers, a few knits, a midi skirt, boots and one weatherproof coat cover most of the list, and corduroy, leather, checks and deep colors bring in the season. Choose the outfits that fit your actual week, the commute, the school run or the trip, and repeat the ones that work rather than chasing every new trend.
