Fall is a good season for a baby girl's wardrobe because the colors finally get interesting. Rust, mustard, berry and olive sit next to the soft pinks you probably already own, and the cooler weather means layers, which means more ways to mix the same few pieces. The looks below use cotton bodysuits, corduroy overalls, sweater dresses, leggings, quilted jackets and soft booties, all chosen so diaper changes stay quick and she can crawl, sit and play without anything getting in the way. Bows and bonnets appear in a few photos; treat them as extras for awake, supervised moments, not part of the everyday outfit.

Making Pink Look Like Fall
A lot of baby girl wardrobes are mostly pink, and that's fine. The trick is pairing it so it reads as autumn rather than Easter. Pink on its own, especially bright or candy pink, looks like spring. Pink next to an earthy color looks seasonal immediately.
- Dusty rose with olive or sage: the green grounds the pink, as in the quilted jacket and leggings look below.
- Blush with rust or caramel: warm and soft, and kind to most baby skin tones in photos.
- Muted pink with mustard: cheerful without being loud. Keep the mustard to one piece, like a cardigan or socks.
- Berry or plum with cream: deeper and dressier, good for holiday gatherings.
When I'm working with what a family already owns, I keep the pink pieces and add one or two earthy items to go with them, usually a rust cardigan, olive leggings or tan booties. Those few additions turn a spring-colored drawer into a fall one without replacing anything.
1. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With Corduroy Overalls

Rust corduroy overalls over a cream long-sleeve bodysuit is the outfit I'd build a fall drawer around. Choose a bodysuit with an envelope neckline, because after a blowout you can pull it down over her legs instead of over her head. The fitted base keeps the overalls tidy. Oatmeal socks and soft brown crib booties, and an ivory or muted beige cardigan on cold mornings. Leg snaps are essential. A small knit bonnet looks sweet outside; take it and any other extras off when she sleeps.
2. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With A Floral Dress

A long-sleeve floral dress gives a baby's fall wardrobe soft color without much effort. Look for cotton with tiny flowers in rust, rose, mustard or olive; small prints suit a small body far better than large blooms. Cream ribbed tights underneath, soft tan ankle booties and a dusty rose cardigan you can take off as it warms. Bloomers or an attached bodysuit are what make a dress practical for crawling. Skip scratchy lace and stiff trims at the neck and cuffs, since those are exactly where babies rub. A fabric bow for photos only.
3. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With A Knit Sweater Dress

A knit sweater dress is a cozy one-piece for crisp outings. Choose a soft, light knit in camel, oatmeal, plum or muted pink, not a heavy chunky one that weighs her down. Cream cotton tights and flexible chocolate booties. A quilted vest over the top adds warmth while keeping arms free to reach and crawl. For younger babies, shoulder buttons or a roomy neck make dressing much less of a wrestle. Keep the hem above the knee so it doesn't wrap around moving legs. It looks right in a family portrait or at brunch.
4. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With Denim Overalls

Denim overalls are the casual starting point. Pick soft, flexible denim; stiff denim folds into a hard ridge across a sitting baby's tummy. A cinnamon-striped bodysuit or plain ivory top underneath, mustard socks and tan crib shoes for warm color. A cream sherpa-lined jacket when it gets cold. Adjustable straps and leg snaps mean the same pair fits for months longer. Roll the hems once, but check the cuff stays put once she starts crawling, since a dropped cuff catches under the knee.
5. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With A Plaid Dress

A plaid dress is the traditional choice for photos and holiday outings. Soft brushed cotton in burgundy, cream and forest green, with an ivory bodysuit under it if the sleeves are short or the neck is open. Burgundy tights cover the legs, and tan Mary Janes make it a little dressy. A cropped cream cardigan warms her without covering the plaid, which a long cardigan would. Look for flat seams, a back closure that's easy to manage and room to sit. Add bloomers under a full skirt. A velvet bow is optional.
6. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With A Ribbed Lounge Set

Some days the goal is pajama comfort that can still go out the door. A ribbed two-piece in dusty rose, sage or warm taupe does that. Rib knit stretches with her and recovers, so it stays neat through tummy time and naps. A long-sleeve top with a stretchy neck, pull-on pants with a soft waistband, and a white bodysuit underneath. Cream socks, suede-look booties and a light beige quilted jacket for outside. Skip pants with tight elastic or decorative cords. A cotton beanie outside, off again indoors.
7. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With A Pumpkin Romper

A pumpkin-print romper gives you the season in one piece. Long-sleeve cotton in cream, rust or pale peach, with a small, simple print. Warm brown knee socks or footed leggings depending on the weather, then a light oatmeal cardigan and caramel booties. Leg snaps matter most here, because pumpkin patch trips always include a diaper change somewhere awkward. The print is busy enough, so keep the layers neutral. A small rust bow for photos while you're watching. Skip big decorations that dig in when she's strapped into a stroller or carrier.
8. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With A Quilted Jacket

A light quilted jacket fits the chilly mornings that don't need a winter coat. An ivory bodysuit, olive leggings and a dusty pink quilted jacket, with ribbed cream socks and soft brown ankle booties. Pink and olive is one of my favorite fall pairings for baby girls; the green keeps the pink from looking like spring. The jacket needs a smooth lining and easy snaps, and the leggings need a wide, gentle waistband over the diaper. A muted floral bib ties the colors together and catches drool.
9. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With A Cardigan And Leggings

A button-front cardigan over leggings handles an unpredictable day. Start with a white or cream bodysuit, add soft floral leggings with muted pink, brown and sage, then a chunky-textured mustard cardigan. Ivory socks and tan moccasin booties. Keep the cardigan relaxed rather than oversized; extra length gets trapped under her knees when she crawls. Flat, firmly sewn buttons are safer than big decorative ones, which tend to loosen. Leave it open in warm rooms and button it for the walk outside.
10. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With A Denim Dress

A soft denim dress gives the look of jeans in a shape that's easier to wear. Lightweight chambray or flexible denim with roomy armholes and an easy back fastening, over a rust ribbed bodysuit. Cream tights and chestnut booties, plus a small mustard cardigan. It has enough structure for photos and still feels casual. If she's crawling, pick a shorter dress with matching bloomers. Turn it inside out before buying and run a finger along the seams; rough, thick seams at the armhole rub. A fabric bow during an awake photo session.
11. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With A Fleece Vest

A fleece vest warms her middle and leaves her arms free. A forest green or berry bodysuit, soft tan leggings, then an ivory fleece vest with a zipper guard at the neck. Ribbed socks and caramel booties. The earthy colors look at home on a nature walk or orchard visit. Ivory fleece shows dirt fast and pills where it rubs on a car seat or carrier, so I'd keep it for outings rather than daily wear. Make sure the armholes don't rub and the fleece isn't bulky.
12. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With Corduroy Pants

Mustard corduroy pants are cheerful and warm. Pair them with a cream bodysuit printed with tiny florals or woodland animals, a dusty rose cardigan, oatmeal socks and soft brown booties. Look for fine-wale cord with some stretch, a soft pull-on waist and room in the seat. Straight or slightly tapered legs stay in place better than wide ones, which ride up while crawling. When it's warm, drop the cardigan and let the print carry it. With three textures already going, keep accessories out.
13. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With A Hooded Romper

A hooded romper is made for active mornings. A soft sweatshirt-style romper in mauve, warm beige or muted terracotta, with a cotton bodysuit underneath and ribbed tights if the legs are bare. Cream socks and flexible booties. Look for diaper snaps and a hood that lies flat when it's down; a thick hood pushes her head forward when she's lying back in a car seat or bouncer. A small embroidered detail or soft woodland print makes it seasonal without extras.
14. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With A Tulle Skirt

Tulle feels like a party, and with the right layers it's surprisingly comfortable. Choose a knee-length skirt in muted blush, plum or rust with a cotton lining and soft elastic waist; the lining is what stops tulle scratching her legs. An ivory long-sleeve bodysuit and a cropped oatmeal cardigan on top, matching tights and tan Mary Janes. It suits milestone photos and birthdays. Soft tulle only, and short enough not to tangle crawling legs. Keep everything else plain so it reads as pretty rather than costume.
15. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With A Sherpa Jacket

A cream sherpa jacket is the cuddliest outer layer here. Underneath, a rust and ivory striped bodysuit with soft brown leggings, oatmeal socks and camel booties, so the jacket is the only texture. Choose light sherpa with a smooth lining, easy snaps and a neckline that doesn't rub her chin. Sherpa holds a lot of heat, so take it off indoors rather than adding heavy layers under it. A muted olive beanie for outside. Like any bulky jacket, it comes off before she goes in the car seat.
16. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With A Sweater And Bloomers

A sweater with bloomers is a sweet outfit for mild days. A soft cream pullover with shoulder buttons and floral cotton bloomers in rust, plum and sage, with ribbed beige tights and brown booties. The sweater should end at the waist; a long sweater on a crawler gets pinned under her knees and stops her. Check the bloomer elastic leaves no red marks on her thighs after an hour. Add a light quilted coat if it cools. A fabric bow for a quick picture, but the outfit stands without it.
17. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With A Jogger Set

A jogger set gives her total freedom to crawl and stretch. A sweatshirt and pull-on pants in muted lavender, dusty rose or warm cinnamon, with a white bodysuit underneath so she's still dressed when the sweatshirt comes off. Cream socks, soft sneakers for walkers or booties for younger babies. A light olive puffer vest adds contrast and warmth outdoors. Check the waistband and ankle cuffs stretch easily over your hand. A printed bib protects the sweatshirt at snack time.
18. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With A Pinafore Dress

A corduroy pinafore layers easily over whatever bodysuit is clean. Caramel, burgundy or forest green over a cream ribbed bodysuit, ivory tights and soft brown Mary Janes or crib booties, plus a cropped dusty pink or oatmeal cardigan. Adjustable straps and side buttons let it grow with her. Keep the skirt short and flexible, since stiff corduroy bunches under her in a stroller. A subtle floral bib protects the bodysuit and picks up the cardigan color.
19. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With A Knit Romper

A knit romper has a vintage look with no styling at all. Choose a soft romper in oatmeal, muted rose or cinnamon with comfortable straps and bottom snaps, over an ivory or tiny floral bodysuit. Ribbed knee socks and caramel booties. On cooler days, a light bonnet and soft quilted jacket outside. It needs stretch through the body and legs for sitting and changes. Check the knit: loose, open stitches catch tiny fingers and toes and snag on stroller buckles. A tight, even knit lasts longer and is safer.
20. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With A Flannel Shirt

An open flannel shirt works like a light jacket for outdoor days. A rust and cream plaid over an ivory bodysuit, stretchy olive leggings and flexible brown booties, with a cream knit beanie outside. Choose thin brushed cotton; heavy flannel is stiff on a baby and bunches at the armpits. Roll the sleeves only if they stay rolled. For crawlers, the shirt should end at the hip so it doesn't fold under her knees. Take it off as the day warms and the base still looks like an outfit.
21. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With A Polka Dot Dress

Polka dots are a playful break from florals and plaid. A long-sleeve dress in chocolate brown with cream dots, or dusty rose with tiny ivory spots, with cream tights, tan Mary Janes and an oatmeal cardigan. Add bloomers if they aren't attached. Brown with cream dots is my pick for fall because it hides marks and looks seasonal; pale pink dots look more like spring. Keep the dots small. Skip stiff collars, which rub her chin and cheeks.
22. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With A Puffer Vest

A thin puffer vest turns basic separates into an outdoor outfit. A cream waffle-knit bodysuit and burgundy pull-on pants, with a muted pink or olive vest, oatmeal socks and soft tan booties. Smooth, ribbed and quilted textures together keep it interesting without bright prints. Choose a vest thin enough that her arms move freely and it doesn't puff up around her face in the stroller. Take it off indoors if she's warm, and before buckling her into the car seat.
23. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With A Ruffle Bodysuit

A ruffle-shoulder bodysuit is the detail in an otherwise plain outfit. Dusty rose, ivory or muted plum with soft ruffles, warm brown ribbed leggings and a cream button cardigan, then oatmeal socks and tan booties. Look for flat, soft ruffles. Stiff ones bunch under a jacket and scratch the neck, and they don't survive many washes. Leggings with diaper room. A quilted bonnet outside while supervised. Keep other patterns out so the shoulders stay the focus.
24. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With A Cape Coat

A cape coat is a dressy piece for short outings and photos, and I'd be honest that it's not an everyday coat. A camel or dusty rose cape over an ivory long-sleeve knit dress, with cream tights and brown Mary Janes. Choose a light cape that fastens securely at the front with plenty of room at the neck. Capes shift as a baby moves, so this is for being held, riding in the stroller or posing, not crawling. Remove it before the car seat or crib. A cream bonnet outside. Without the cape, the dress still works by itself.
25. Baby Girl Fall Outfit With A Matching Sweater Set

A matching sweater set is the easy answer for colder days. A soft knit pullover and pants in warm taupe, muted berry, sage or pumpkin, with a light cotton bodysuit underneath. Ribbed cream socks and flexible brown booties, plus an ivory quilted jacket outside. Choose tight, smooth knits with stretch and secure seams. Skip oversized sweaters, dangling ties, pom-poms and open stitching, all of which catch little fingers. A floral bib or a fabric bow can freshen it up when you're taking pictures.
Tights, Bloomers and Dresses on a Crawling Baby
Many of these outfits include a dress with tights, and that's where most frustrations start. Baby tights sag at the crotch, twist at the ankle and slide on wooden floors. A few things help:
- Buy tights by weight or length, not age, and choose the larger size if she's between. Tights that are too short pull the waistband down and leave the seat hanging.
- Cotton blend tights with a bit of stretch stay up better than pure cotton, which bags after an hour of crawling.
- Footed tights are slippery on hard floors. For new walkers, footless tights with grippy socks, or booties over the top, are safer.
- Crawling wears through tights at the knees first. Leggings under a dress are a sturdier choice for everyday play.
Bloomers solve the other problem: a dress that rides up during crawling. If a dress doesn't come with them, any plain cotton bloomers in cream or a color from the dress will work. And watch hem length. A dress that ends above the knee leaves her legs free; anything longer gets caught under her knees and stops her in her tracks.
Rust, Berry and Soft Pink Belong in the Same Drawer
The fall outfits that work for a baby girl are the ones that are comfortable first and pretty second. Start with a soft bodysuit, then add leggings, overalls, a dress or a romper, and keep a cardigan, quilted jacket or thin vest within reach for the temperature swings. Rust, olive, mustard, berry, cream and camel all go with the pinks you already have, so coordinating takes very little thought. Choose soft fabrics, sensible fastenings and fits with room for a diaper and a busy baby. Save bows and bonnets for awake, supervised moments, and let the rest of the outfit do the work.
