A fall wardrobe that works on a Tuesday morning is mostly made of plain things: jeans, a few knits, black pants, a couple of jackets and shoes you can walk in. When I edit a client's closet for the season, I'm looking for pieces that pair with at least three others, because those are the ones that get worn. The outfits here are built from that kind of piece. Relaxed denim, light knitwear and layers you can take off at noon are still the backbone of most closets this season. Adjust each look for your shape and your weather, swap the jacket or shoes to repeat it, and shop only for the gaps you notice along the way.

Adding Layers Week by Week From September to November
Fall weather doesn't change all at once, so I plan basic outfits in three stages. Each stage adds one layer to what you already wore, which means you don't need a separate wardrobe for each month.
Early Fall
Mornings are cool and afternoons can still feel like summer. Tees, light cardigans, denim jackets and shirt layers do the work, because you can take them off and carry them. Sneakers and loafers are still comfortable.
Mid Fall
Swap the tee for a fine knit and the denim jacket for a trench, blazer or leather jacket. This is when ankle boots come out and tights start to replace bare legs under skirts and dresses.
Late Fall
Thicker knits, a long wool coat and a puffer vest join in. Keep the base layer thin so the coat still closes. Thin thermal tops under sweaters add warmth without the bulk of a second sweater.
The jeans, black pants and shoes barely change across the three stages. That's why the bottoms and footwear are where I'd spend more, and the light top layers are where I'd save.
1. Basic Fall Outfit With Jeans And A Sweater

Crewneck and straight jeans: the outfit I'd build first in any fall closet. Sweater weight decides how it looks. A mid-weight knit in cream, gray, navy, camel or burgundy drapes over the waistband; a thick cable adds a band of bulk right at the hip. Balance the shapes: a relaxed sweater with straight or slim denim, a closer knit with wide-leg jeans. Half-tuck it if you want a waist, leave it out if you want comfort. On cold mornings a fitted cotton tee underneath adds warmth without bunching at the cuffs. Leather ankle boots and a crossbody finish it.
2. Basic Fall Outfit With A White T-Shirt And Cardigan

The tee is what people get wrong with this one. Under a cardigan, a sheer white tee shows the bra and wrinkles along the knit's edge, so I look for an opaque, mid-weight crewneck that lies flat. Oatmeal, chocolate, charcoal and olive cardigans all suit a white base. Wear it open if the knit is thick; buttoned chunky cardigans pull across the bust. Roll the sleeves once to let a slice of white cuff show. Straight jeans keep it casual, and black trousers with loafers make it office-ready.
3. Basic Fall Outfit With Black Pants And A Knit Top

Black pants and a fine knit are what I suggest to anyone who wants to look neat without trying hard. Tailored ankle pants suit an office; ponte or wide-leg pants are kinder for long days of sitting. The sweater length is the detail to get right. It should either end right at the waistband or tuck in smoothly. A knit that stops two inches below the waistband cuts the body at an unflattering point. Cream, camel, gray or deep red all work against black, and loafers or a low block-heel boot keep the line clean. A long coat over it changes nothing about the shape.
4. Basic Fall Outfit With Leggings And An Oversized Sweater

Leggings with an oversized sweater are comfortable, but they only look intentional if the sweater covers the upper hip. Choose thick, opaque leggings and check them in daylight; some go sheer when you bend. A cream cable-knit, a heather tunic or a green quarter-zip all work. Stick to two or three colors so it looks planned. White leather sneakers suit mild days, and flat ankle boots handle cold ones. Crew socks above the shoe are a nice detail, especially in a contrasting knit.
5. Basic Fall Outfit With A Denim Jacket And Black Jeans

A denim jacket over black jeans gives you a coat-free outfit for days that warm up by lunch. Blue against black is a sharper contrast than double blue denim, which takes careful wash-matching. Wear it over a white, black or striped long-sleeve tee. The jacket length decides the jeans: cropped jackets need high-rise jeans to avoid a gap at the midriff, while hip-length jackets suit slim or straight legs. A cognac crossbody warms up the colors. Sneakers, brown ankle boots or black loafers all work underneath.
6. Basic Fall Outfit With A Blazer And Straight-Leg Jeans

A blazer is the fastest way I know to make jeans look intentional. Put it over a fitted tee, a fine sweater or a tank with good coverage. Black, camel, navy or a small check all work against blue straight-leg denim. Before buying, close it and reach forward. If the back pulls or the button strains, it's too small even if you'll wear it open. A leather belt connects the tailored top to the denim, and a structured tote suits it better than a slouchy bag. Loafers, ankle boots or minimal sneakers depend on the day.
7. Basic Fall Outfit With A Button-Down Shirt And Trousers

A button-down tucked into tailored trousers is my default office outfit for clients who hate deciding. White, pale blue or a fine stripe in crisp cotton, tucked into black, navy, taupe or chocolate, with a slim belt. Cotton shirts wrinkle at the tuck line, so I suggest a small amount of stretch in the fabric if you sit all day. When it turns cooler, layer a thin crewneck over the shirt and pull the collar and cuffs out. Petite women usually look best in an ankle-length trouser; a full-length cut suits taller frames.
8. Basic Fall Outfit With A Striped Sweater And Dark Jeans

Stripes are the one pattern I let almost anyone treat as a neutral. A cream sweater with black, navy, brown or burgundy stripes goes with nearly everything in a basic closet. Dark straight jeans keep it clean. A cropped stripe knit over high-rise denim lengthens the legs; a loose one needs a small front tuck to find the waist. Keep other patterns out of the outfit, including the bag. Loafers dress it up a little and white sneakers keep it weekend-casual.
9. Basic Fall Outfit With A Trench Coat And Jeans

A trench is built for light rain and wind, with a storm flap, belt and collar that turns up. I'd wear a beige, stone, navy or olive one over a fitted long-sleeve top and straight jeans. Most trenches are cotton gabardine, which sheds a drizzle but soaks through in a real downpour, so it's a transitional coat rather than a raincoat. Tie the belt behind your back when the coat is open, or fasten it and tie the belt loosely for a waist. Water-resistant ankle boots are worth it on a gray day. Pick a length that suits your height.
10. Basic Fall Outfit With A Midi Skirt And Sweater

A midi skirt moves differently from jeans, and that movement is the point. Pleated, satin, denim or knit midis all pair with a crewneck in a matching neutral. Balance the volume: fitted sweater with a full skirt, relaxed knit with a slim one. Boot height depends on the skirt length. Knee-high boots should disappear under the hem, while ankle boots work best when the skirt ends at mid-calf. Thin tights add warmth without showing bulk at the ankle.
11. Basic Fall Outfit With A Knit Dress And Boots

A knit dress is a complete outfit, which is why I keep one in every fall closet. A midi with a crewneck, mock neck or small collar is the most versatile. Straight shapes are easy; a removable belt adds a waist if you want one. Knits cling at the hip and stomach, so a slip or smooth tights underneath helps the dress fall cleanly. Knee-high boots in black or brown, a long wool coat and small earrings finish it. Charcoal, camel and navy go with any coat, while burgundy or forest green adds a little color.
12. Basic Fall Outfit With A Leather Jacket And Blue Jeans

A leather jacket over plain basics adds instant attitude. Start with a white tee, a thin rib knit or a light turtleneck, add straight or relaxed blue jeans and black ankle boots. Black leather gives sharp contrast; brown or burgundy is softer. Leather jackets are fitted, so the layer underneath must be thin or the armholes will bind. A waist-length cut over high-rise denim keeps the proportions right. If you prefer faux leather, bend your arms in it first; some versions are stiff at the elbow.
13. Basic Fall Outfit With A Hoodie And Trench Coat

A hoodie under a trench is my travel uniform suggestion: casual, warm, and still smart enough for a restaurant. A thin gray, cream or navy hoodie without graphics fits under the coat without bulky sleeves. Rest the hood outside the trench collar so it doesn't bunch at the neck. Straight jeans or black trousers with clean sneakers finish it. Take the trench off and you're still dressed. A cap makes it sportier; a structured crossbody adds polish.
14. Basic Fall Outfit With A Flannel Shirt And Jeans

A flannel over a tee is about as casual as fall gets. Choose a plaid with burgundy, olive, navy, tan or rust, since those colors work with the rest of a basic wardrobe. Fit matters more than people think. A flannel that skims the body looks deliberate, while a boxy, heavy one adds width. Worn open over a white or black tee with medium-wash straight jeans, it's a light layer you can tie around your waist when it warms up. Brushed cotton flannel softens with washing but also pills, so wash it inside out.
15. Basic Fall Outfit With A Turtleneck And Wide-Leg Pants

A thin turtleneck tucked into high-rise wide-leg pants creates one long line from chin to floor. The knit must be fine; a thick turtleneck adds bulk at the waist and shortens the neck. Black, charcoal, chocolate, camel and navy are the safest colors. Hem the pants for the shoes you'll wear most. The hem should almost touch the floor in those shoes without dragging. If a full turtleneck feels tight, a mock neck gives the same line. Add a long coat when it's colder.
16. Basic Fall Outfit With A Shacket And Black Leggings

A shacket sits between a sweatshirt and a coat. Wear one in plaid, olive, camel or charcoal over a fitted long-sleeve tee, with thick black leggings and sneakers or lug-sole boots. With leggings, I like the shacket to reach past the hip for coverage. On petite frames, a long, heavy shacket can swamp the body, so a shorter cut is usually better. Keep the base layers slim because the shacket supplies all the volume. A crossbody keeps your hands free.
17. Basic Fall Outfit With A Sweater Vest And Button-Down Shirt

A sweater vest over a button-down gives warmth at the core while leaving the arms cool, which suits mild fall weather and overheated offices. Cream, gray, navy or brown vests sit well over white or pale blue shirts. Check the armholes. A vest with tight armholes pulls the shirt sleeves and wrinkles them. Let the shirt hem show a little under the vest for a relaxed look, or tuck both into high-rise trousers for a cleaner one. Loafers or leather sneakers finish it.
18. Basic Fall Outfit With A Denim Shirt And Black Pants

A denim shirt does two jobs: worn open, it's a light jacket; buttoned and tucked, it's a top. Open over a white tee with black straight pants, it's casual. Buttoned into wide-leg trousers, it looks sharper. Fabric weight matters here. Soft chambray is comfortable for a full day; heavy, stiff denim feels restrictive and creases at the elbows. A brown belt and bag warm up the blue and black, and rolled sleeves keep it relaxed.
19. Basic Fall Outfit With A Cardigan And Midi Skirt

A cardigan worn buttoned as a top makes a midi skirt feel softer. Choose a fitted or semi-fitted cardigan, and check that the buttons don't gape across the bust when you sit. Pleated, denim, knit or A-line skirts all work. A cropped cardigan suits a high-rise skirt; a longer one can be tucked slightly at the front. Knee-high boots add warmth, while loafers with tights suit milder days. Tonal pairs such as cream and camel, gray and black, or burgundy and chocolate make the pieces look planned.
20. Basic Fall Outfit With A Sweatshirt And Straight-Leg Jeans

Some days just need a sweatshirt. A plain crewneck in gray, navy, forest green, cream or burgundy with straight jeans and leather sneakers is honest, comfortable dressing. To make it look sharper, wear a collared shirt underneath with the collar and cuffs showing, or carry a structured tote rather than a backpack. Very oversized sweatshirts swallow the frame, so I'd choose a slightly relaxed cut that ends near the hip, or tuck a small section into the waistband.
21. Basic Fall Outfit With A Long Coat And Sneakers

A long coat finishes jeans and a sweater in one move. Knee-length or mid-calf in camel, black, charcoal, navy or herringbone all work. Try it on over your thickest sweater; if it pulls across the shoulders or back, the coat is too small for fall layering. Petite frames look taller with a long coat worn open, because the opening creates a vertical line. Clean sneakers keep the outfit walkable for commuting and city days, and a light scarf adds warmth at the neck.
22. Basic Fall Outfit With Corduroy Pants And A Sweater

Corduroy pants style as easily as jeans but bring more texture. Straight or wide-leg in tan, chocolate, olive, navy or burgundy, paired with a plain cream, gray or black crewneck. The wale changes the look: fine wale is smooth and dressier, wide wale is more casual and adds a little bulk. Check the hem with your shoes; corduroy doesn't drape as softly as wool, so too-long hems pile up at the ankle. Wash inside out to protect the pile from crushing.
23. Basic Fall Outfit With A Puffer Vest And Long-Sleeve Top

A puffer vest keeps your core warm while your arms move freely, which makes it practical for walks, errands and travel. Black, olive, navy, cream or brown over a striped or solid long-sleeve tee, with straight jeans. Size it so it zips over a thin sweater later in the season. A hip-length vest is the most balanced; longer ones add bulk at the thigh. Practical sneakers or weather-resistant boots suit the sporty feel, and a leather tote makes it slightly more polished. Unzip it when the afternoon warms up.
24. Basic Fall Outfit With A Monochrome Brown Look

A head-to-toe brown outfit looks richer than black and softer than navy. Start with a chocolate, mocha or taupe sweater and trousers one shade lighter or darker. The shades don't need to match; a small difference gives the outfit depth. Mix textures so the color doesn't look flat: knit, smooth leather and tailored fabric. Cognac loafers or dark brown ankle boots finish it, with a matching belt and bag. A cream coat brightens the whole outfit, and a dark brown coat makes it moodier.
25. Basic Fall Outfit With A Black Dress And Denim Jacket

A black dress with a denim jacket is how I keep a summer dress working into October. A knee-length or midi in cotton, jersey or light knit pairs well. With a loose dress, a cropped jacket or a narrow belt brings back some shape. Add tights as it gets colder; opaque black tights make the black dress look deliberate. Ankle boots, loafers or minimal sneakers depending on the day. A brown crossbody warms the colors and a black structured bag keeps it sleek.
Reading the Fiber Label on a Basic
Basics get worn and washed more than anything else in a closet, so the fiber content on the inside label tells you how long they'll last. I check it before I check the price.
- Cotton tees and shirts: a thicker, tightly knit jersey keeps its shape longer than a thin one. Very thin cotton twists at the side seams after a few washes.
- Wool and wool blends: warmer than cotton and they resist odor, so they need fewer washes. Loosely spun or very soft wool pills at the underarms and wrists.
- Acrylic sweaters: inexpensive and easy to wash, but they trap heat, pill quickly and lose shape faster than wool.
- Denim with stretch: a little elastane makes jeans comfortable, but high-stretch denim bags out at the knees by the end of the day.
- Ponte and leggings: thicker ponte holds its shape and hides lines; thin leggings go sheer when stretched.
When a basic wears out quickly, it's usually the fabric rather than the cut. Replacing it with a better fiber often costs a little more but lasts several seasons.
Plain Pieces, Many Combinations
A useful fall wardrobe doesn't mean buying a new collection every year. The pieces in these outfits are familiar ones that layer, repeat and adapt to the weather. Start with jeans that fit, black pants, simple knits and comfortable shoes, then add a cardigan, blazer, trench or denim jacket. Plan around your real week rather than single statement pieces. Neutrals mix easily, and burgundy, olive, navy and chocolate add depth. If the fabric, fit and shoes are comfortable, you'll reach for these outfits all season.
