School shopping can be frustrating for plus size teens, mostly because so much of what's in stores was never cut for curves. The good news is that the shapes that are popular right now, relaxed jeans, big hoodies, layered shirts, boxy blazers and flowy skirts, happen to work very well on curvy bodies. Below are 30 head-to-toe outfits. For each one, I've added what I'd check in the fitting room: where a waistband gaps, which fabrics cling or hold, and how to keep a look comfortable from first bell to the last class.

Getting Jeans to Fit the Waist and the Hips Together
The most common fitting problem I see with curvy teens is jeans that fit the hips and thighs but gap at the back of the waist. It happens because standard patterns assume a smaller difference between waist and hips than many bodies have. It isn't your body that's wrong, it's the pattern.
- Look for styles labeled curvy, which are cut with more room in the hip and a smaller waist.
- Choose a high rise with a contoured waistband that curves rather than a straight band.
- Buy for the hips and thighs, then have a tailor take in the back waist. It's a small, usually inexpensive alteration.
- A belt helps with a small gap, but a large one needs tailoring or it bunches.
Sit, squat and walk in the fitting room. Jeans that feel fine standing still often dig in when you sit at a desk for an hour.
1. Oversized hoodie and wide leg jeans outfit

For a cold morning, a heavyweight oversized hoodie in washed black or heather gray with high-waisted wide leg jeans is pure comfort. The jeans should skim the hips and thighs, then fall straight, slightly pooling over the shoe. A heavier sweatshirt fabric hangs from the shoulders instead of clinging to the stomach, which is why I always choose thick fleece over thin jersey here. White platform sneakers, a canvas tote big enough for a laptop and water bottle, silver hoops and a messy bun.
2. Graphic tee and cargo pants outfit

A boxy vintage-style graphic tee, front-tucked into olive or beige high-rise cargo pants, is easy and full of personality. Wide legs with deep side pockets are a good choice on curvy hips, as long as the pockets lie flat; puffy pockets add width right where you may not want it. Black and white low-tops, a nylon crossbody for your phone and lip balm, a cap and small hoops.
3. Denim jacket and floral midi dress outfit

A dark floral midi with a smocked bodice and three-quarter sleeves under an oversized denim jacket mixes soft and tough. Smocking stretches to fit the bust and back, which makes it one of the friendliest bodice styles for a fuller chest. Let the dress hem show below the jacket. White low sneakers or canvas slip-ons, a neutral mini backpack, a fine layered necklace and a few rings. It works from first period to meeting friends after school.
4. Cropped cardigan and high waisted jeans outfit

A button-front cropped cardigan in lavender or butter yellow over a fitted white tank or bodysuit looks sweet and finished. The cardigan should hit at your natural waist; on a fuller bust, a crop that's too short can ride up and look tight, so I'd test it with arms raised. High-waisted straight jeans in a medium wash with some stretch, white leather sneakers, a woven shoulder bag with a knotted handle, small gold hoops and stacked rings.
5. Plaid skirt and sweater vest outfit

A black or gray pleated plaid mini at the waist, with a solid knit vest over a white button-down and the collar out, is preppy and fun. Pleats that are stitched down a few inches from the waistband lie flatter over the tummy and hips than pleats that open right at the top, and that's the detail I look for. Sheer black tights, chunky loafers or Mary Jane flats, a top-handle bag and a headband.
6. Matching sweatsuit outfit

A relaxed crewneck sweatshirt with matching sweatpants in sage or dusty blue looks coordinated with no effort. The fabric should be thick enough to hold its shape; thin sets cling and show every line by lunchtime. Chunky white sneakers, a quilted mini backpack, a low bun and small hoops. It goes from a morning assembly to an afternoon study session without feeling sloppy.
7. Blazer and wide leg trousers outfit

An oversized camel or plaid blazer over a white ribbed tank or light turtleneck, with high-waisted wide trousers, looks confident and calm. On a curvy frame, I check the blazer across the back: if it pulls when you hug yourself, size up, and have the sleeves shortened instead. Pointed flats or low block loafers, a sleek tote, a chain necklace and studs for debate meetings and school events.
8. Flare jeans and fitted ribbed tank outfit

High-rise flare jeans in dark indigo with some stretch make a long line on curvy legs, because the flare balances the hips. A fitted ribbed tank in cream or chocolate tucked in, platform sneakers or low wedges, a shoulder bag with gold hardware, layered necklaces and big sunglasses. Dark washes look slimmer than light ones with whiskering on the thigh, so if you prefer a smooth look, keep the wash plain.
9. Boyfriend jeans and striped tee outfit

Slouchy light-wash boyfriend jeans with a navy and cream long-sleeve Breton tee feel easy and casual. Horizontal stripes don't automatically widen you; narrow, evenly spaced stripes in a soft cotton read as calm, and wide high-contrast stripes are the ones that do. A canvas belt for a bit of shape, white canvas sneakers, a bright canvas tote, studs and a watch.
10. Utility jumpsuit outfit

A cotton twill utility jumpsuit in sage or caramel with a zip front and lots of pockets does the whole outfit in one piece. The torso length is everything for curvy teens: if it's too short from shoulder to crotch, it pulls all day, so sit and bend in it before buying. A self-tie belt, rolled cuffs, high-top sneakers or combat boots and a white long-sleeve tee underneath when it's cool. A cap or beanie and a contrasting crossbody.
11. Corduroy overalls outfit

Rust or mustard corduroy overalls with adjustable straps and room through the hips are comfortable and fall-ready. A fitted white long-sleeve tee or thin turtleneck underneath keeps the top half neat. Adjust the straps so the bib sits flat; too loose and it bags over the bust, too tight and the crotch pulls. White or cream sneakers, a beanie and a mini backpack, and a light sweater instead of the tee when it gets cold.
12. Pleated mini skirt and oversized sweater outfit

A black or tan pleated mini at the natural waist with an oversized crewneck sweater in cream or a pastel blends preppy and cozy. Let the sweater skim the top of the skirt rather than tucking a thick knit, which adds a bulge at the waist. Opaque tights, knee-high flat boots or lug loafers, a colorful crossbody and pearl or gold studs make it look like a page from a campus lookbook.
13. Bike shorts and oversized button-down outfit

High-waisted black bike shorts to mid-thigh under an oversized white button-down keep you cool on hot days. The shorts must stay put; look for a wide waistband and silicone grip at the hem, because shorts that roll down or ride up will annoy you all day. Leave the top buttons open, roll the sleeves, add crew socks, chunky sneakers, a cap and a belt bag worn crossbody.
14. Varsity jacket and denim skirt outfit

A black and cream varsity jacket over a white cropped tee or fitted bodysuit, with a front-slit denim midi skirt, mixes sporty and feminine. Denim midi skirts with no stretch can be tight across the hips when you sit, so I look for some stretch or a slightly A-line cut. White ankle socks, retro sneakers, a mini backpack or slouchy hobo, small hoops and a ponytail. Great for game nights.
15. Chunky knit sweater and faux leather pants outfit

A chunky oatmeal or cream cable sweater over black or deep brown faux leather straight pants is all about texture. Faux leather doesn't breathe and can feel warm in a heated classroom, and it doesn't stretch much, so I'd pick a pair with a stretch backing and size for the hips. Lug-sole Chelsea boots, a chain-strap bag and layered necklaces. Leave the sweater out rather than tucked.
16. T-shirt dress and chunky sneakers outfit

An oversized t-shirt dress, solid or soft tie-dye, a few inches above the knee, is the fastest outfit here. Chunky white sneakers, crew socks, a denim jacket tied at the waist for cold rooms, a canvas tote and a claw clip. A thicker cotton dress hangs better than a thin one, which tends to cling to the tummy and back. Wear bike shorts underneath for long walking days.
17. Flannel shacket and leggings outfit

A plaid flannel shacket in earthy tones, big enough to work as a light jacket, over a black fitted long-sleeve tee and high-waisted black leggings. Leggings for school should be thick and opaque, with a high waistband that doesn't roll; do the squat test in a mirror. Low-top sneakers, a quilted tote, hoops and a bracelet. The shacket covers the hips and keeps you warm in drafty rooms.
18. Ruffle blouse and wide leg trousers outfit

A white or cream long-sleeve blouse with small ruffles at the collar and cuffs, tucked into high-waisted wide trousers in beige or light olive, looks soft and dressed up. Keep the ruffles near the face and wrists; ruffles at the bust add volume where you may not want it. Ballet flats or loafers, a contrasting structured bag, pearl drops and a fine ring set for presentation days.
19. Crochet vest and maxi skirt outfit

An earthy crochet vest over a plain long-sleeve tee with a flowy maxi skirt is relaxed and artsy. Crochet stretches with your shape, which makes it forgiving, but it also grows when hung, so fold it in the drawer. A tiered or small-print maxi, flat sandals or ballet flats, a fringed crossbody, beaded necklaces and bracelets.
20. Puffer vest and long sleeve tee outfit

A glossy black or muted metallic puffer vest over a fitted long-sleeve tee in ivory or sage solves the in-between temperature days. High-waisted skinny jeans or ponte pants balance the volume on top. Puffer vests can add bulk at the middle, so I'd choose a vest with vertical or narrow quilting and wear it open. Hiking-style boots or sturdy sneakers, a beanie, a sporty backpack and a watch.
21. Shacket and straight leg jeans outfit

An olive or muted plaid shacket worn open over a plain tank or tee makes long vertical lines down the body. Medium-wash straight jeans with a raw hem keep it clean. The shacket should cover your hips with room to move your arms; buttoning it changes the shape, so I'd buy one that looks good open. Lug loafers or platform sneakers, a crescent crossbody, small hoops and sunglasses.
22. Babydoll top and relaxed boyfriend jeans outfit

A babydoll top with an empire waist and gentle flare taps into the Y2K revival, with puff sleeves or lace trim in a solid or small floral. The empire seam should sit just under the bust; if it lands on the bust, the top will look tight and short. Relaxed light-wash boyfriend jeans, white platform sneakers, a glossy mini bag, a charm necklace, beaded bracelets and a half-up claw clip.
23. Button-down shirt and knit vest outfit

A crisp white button-down, sleeves to the elbow, under a V-neck knit vest in rust, mustard or forest green is smart and modern. Button-downs often gape at the bust on curvy frames, so look for hidden placket buttons or size up and take in the waist. Dark straight jeans that hold their shape, loafers or oxford flats, a leather-look backpack and thin gold hoops for presentations and group work.
24. A-line dress and denim jacket outfit

A short-sleeve A-line dress in a jewel tone or small floral, just above the knee, skims the hips and moves with you. A cropped or waist-length denim jacket adds structure. The A-line works because it starts flaring from the narrowest point, so check that the seam sits at your waist and not lower. White sneakers or flat ankle boots, a woven crossbody, studs and a bracelet.
25. Wide leg linen pants and simple tank outfit

Ivory or light khaki wide-leg linen pants with a fitted tank in a coordinating earth tone keep you cool in late-summer heat. Linen breathes better than almost anything, but light linen pants can be sheer, so I'd check them in sunlight or choose a lined pair. Flat strappy sandals or minimal sneakers, a big woven tote, thin gold chains and round sunglasses.
26. Cropped hoodie and joggers outfit

A bubblegum pink or electric blue cropped hoodie hitting at the natural waist, with high-waisted cuffed joggers in a neutral, is sporty and bright. The crop should overlap the joggers' waistband even when you lift your arms. Chunky dad sneakers, a belt bag worn crossbody, small hoops and a ponytail. Made for busy days, lunch outside and a quick gym or dance stop.
27. Tunic top and leggings outfit

A long knit tunic in burgundy or navy with a curved hem at mid-thigh gives coverage and comfort. Thick black leggings with plenty of stretch, tall socks over them, quilted slip-ons or sneakers, a plaid scarf and a roomy hobo. A tunic with side slits moves better over the hips when you walk and sit, so I'd look for one. Good for cold mornings and long study days.
28. Plaid flannel and black jeans outfit

An open plaid flannel in deep red, navy and forest green over a white or black tank, with black high-waisted skinny or straight jeans, has a familiar grunge feel. Black jeans fade with every wash, so turn them inside out and wash cold to keep them dark. Rolled sleeves, black leather combat boots, a beanie, a canvas backpack and small hoops. Good for football games, bonfires and normal school days.
29. Knit dress and ankle boots outfit

A long-sleeve ribbed knit midi in camel or olive skims the body and stretches as you move. A thick rib holds you in more smoothly than a thin one, which can show every line. Low block-heel ankle boots in dark brown or black, a long pendant to draw the eye down, and a chain-strap crossbody. Add a wool-blend coat on cold days. It suits spirit events or days with important meetings.
30. Long cardigan and tank dress outfit

A sleeveless knee-length tank dress in a neutral under a long open-front cardigan in a contrasting shade is one of the easiest layered outfits here. The open cardigan creates two long vertical lines, which is why it's a favorite of mine for curvy frames. Ballet flats or espadrille sneakers, a long pendant, a roomy tote and stacked bracelets. Take the cardigan off when the classroom warms up.
Junior Plus or Women's Plus, and Why the Same Number Fits Differently
Teens often shop between two size ranges. Junior plus is usually cut for a younger, straighter shape, with shorter rises and narrower hips, while women's plus is cut for a fuller bust and hips. The same size number can fit very differently between the two, and between brands.
I'd ignore the number and go by measurements and the try-on. Measure your bust, waist and hips and compare them to each brand's size chart, especially when shopping online. If a top fits the bust but the shoulders are huge, you're likely in the wrong range for that brand, not the wrong size.
Stopping Chafing on Long Walking Days in Skirts and Shorts
Several outfits here are dresses, skirts or shorts, and walking between classes in heat can make inner thighs rub and sting. Bike shorts or slip shorts under skirts and dresses are the simplest fix, and they also help on windy days and stairs. Anti-chafe balm or stick works well too, and lasts most of a day.
Fabric matters as well. Cotton and moisture-wicking blends stay drier against skin than polyester linings. If a dress has a scratchy lining, a smooth slip underneath often solves the rubbing and makes it hang better.
Fit Is the Trend That Lasts All Year
Clothes that fit your actual body make every trend easier, and every outfit above starts from that idea. These plus size back to school outfit ideas range from hoodie days to blazer days, but they share the same habits: waistbands that sit where you want them, fabrics thick enough to hold their shape, and layers that let you move. Build a mix of pieces that work together, have the small fixes done, and you'll feel good walking into school every day.
