A plain blue dress is one of the most useful things a costume maker can own. Navy, royal or pale blue, it can turn into a storybook heroine, a cartoon character, a fairy, a rain cloud or even an internet argument, and then go back in the wardrobe on November first. What changes it is the detail you add: a collar, an apron, a wig, the right shoes and one prop. Most of these looks rely on thrifted pieces and basic craft supplies, and I've kept the additions removable wherever I could so the dress survives.

Thrifting the Blue Dress That Does the Most
If you don't already own a blue dress, a thrift store is the place to look, and some dresses work for far more of these costumes than others. Here's what I check on the rack before buying.
- Shape first. A fitted bodice with a flared knee-length skirt covers Alice, Cinderella, Dorothy, Bubbles, the fairy and the rain cloud. A long plain maxi covers the goddess, Wendy, Rosalina and the witch.
- A plain dress beats a printed one. Florals or polka dots fight every collar and apron you add.
- Natural fibres like cotton and linen take pins, tape and pressing better than slippery polyester, and they don't shine under flash.
- Check the seams under the arms and at the zip. A dress that's already straining will tear when you add a petticoat or a cape.
- Sit down in it in the fitting room. If it rides up or pulls across the back, it won't last a party.
Size up rather than down if you're between sizes. A slightly loose dress takes a belt, a sash or a few hidden safety pins, while a tight one leaves no room for a warm layer underneath.
1. Cinderella Blue Dress Costume

You don't need a ball gown for Cinderella. A pale blue fit-and-flare dress with a full skirt, a silver ribbon belt and a soft tulle overlay gets you there. I baste the tulle to the waist seam by hand with long stitches, which come out in a minute afterward. Long white gloves and a rhinestone choker carry the character. Pin your hair in a high bun with a light blue headband, and keep the makeup to silver shadow and a pink gloss. Carry one clear slipper, even an inexpensive clear shoe, and wear silver flats for the walking.
2. Alice In Wonderland Blue Dress Costume

A knee-length sky blue dress with a fitted bodice and flared skirt is Alice before you add anything. The white apron is what tells people who you are, so make sure it's crisp; a quick press with spray starch keeps the ruffle standing. White tights, black Mary Janes and a black ribbon headband finish the look. A teacup, pocket watch or giant paper cards are enough of a prop. If you want a Peter Pan collar, cut one from white cotton and attach it with removable fabric tape rather than sewing into the dress neckline.
3. Dorothy Blue Gingham Dress Costume

The gingham is the costume, so if your dress is solid blue, a blue-and-white checked apron over it gives the same effect. A white puff-sleeve blouse under a sleeveless dress looks more like the film. Part your hair in the centre and tie two low braids with pale blue ribbon. White ankle socks and bright red flats are non-negotiable for Dorothy. A small basket lined with checked fabric and a plush dog finish it. It's comfortable enough for a school event or a whole evening of trick-or-treating with kids.
4. Wendy Darling Blue Dress Costume

Wendy wants a long light blue dress with a defined waist, puff sleeves and a modest neckline. A plain maxi dress works too if you add removable tulle sleeves; I gather a strip of tulle onto elastic and slide it over the upper arm. An oversized blue satin ribbon tied around a low ponytail is her signature. Black ballet flats or short brown boots keep it practical. A small storybook or a paper star in hand is plenty. On a cool night, wear a cream cardigan under a short blue cape.
5. Elsa Ice Queen Blue Dress Costume

A fitted turquoise or pale blue maxi dress becomes an ice queen with a sheer cape attached at the shoulders. I fix capes with snaps sewn to a short ribbon tab, then pin the tab inside the dress at the shoulder seams, so the dress itself never gets stitched. Sequinned or snowflake-print sheer fabric looks frostiest. A platinum wig in a loose side braid, rhinestone earrings and a sparkly comb do the head. Silver shadow and berry lipstick suit the character. Wear flats or low boots, and carry a snowflake ornament or wand.
6. Belle Blue Village Dress Costume

Belle's village look starts with a medium blue midi dress with a fitted waist. Put a white blouse underneath if the dress is sleeveless, and tie a white apron neatly at the back. The apron is often the most handmade piece here, and a simple rectangle with ties is enough. A low ponytail with a blue ribbon and one soft strand at the face suits her. Carry a hardcover book and a small basket so she reads right away. Black ballet flats handle walking, and the outfit works for a book day as well as Halloween.
7. Ariel Blue Town Dress Costume

Ariel's town dress is pale blue, and the bright red hair is what tells everyone who she is. A midi dress with a fitted bodice and puff sleeves is closest. Pin the front sections of a long red wig back so they don't fall into your face while you eat. A thin black ribbon at the neck and a small blue bow are the details I'd add first. Peach blush and a touch of sea-blue shadow suit her. Carry a silver fork for fans who'll get the joke. Everything except the wig can be worn again.
8. Betty Rubble Blue Dress Costume

Betty Rubble suits a short royal blue A-line dress. The uneven prehistoric hem is the tricky part, because nobody wants to cut a good dress. I make a separate jagged felt overlay that pins over the hem from the inside, and felt needs no edge finishing. A small black felt triangle at the neckline and a big blue bow on short black curls finish her. Winged liner and pink lipstick give the cartoon face. A foam-bead stone bracelet and a plush dinosaur suggest the setting without anything club-like.
9. Bubbles Blue Dress Costume

A bright blue mini or skater dress is the base for Bubbles. Her bold colour blocking comes from a wide black belt at the waist, white knee socks and black Mary Janes. A long blonde wig in two high pigtails is the detail people recognise; secure each with a strong elastic and a few pins at the base, or they droop by mid-evening. Pale blue shadow and pink cheeks keep it cartoon-cute. A small plush octopus is a nice nod to the show. It works best as a trio with friends in red and green.
10. Sailor Mercury Blue Dress Costume

A navy pleated dress gets most of the way to Sailor Mercury. Add a white sailor collar trimmed with blue ribbon, a large blue bow at the chest and a small red centre on the bow. You can make the collar as a separate piece that ties under the bow, so the dress stays untouched. A short dark blue wig with side-swept bangs, white gloves and knee-high blue boots complete the uniform. Clear gloss and blue shadow are enough makeup. If boots are uncomfortable, blue knee socks with white sneakers look fine for a long party.
11. Rosalina Blue Gown Costume

Rosalina needs a floor-length aqua or powder blue gown, ideally off the shoulder. If your dress has a plain neckline, a wide folded collar made from matching fabric and pinned inside the bodice changes it. The wig is long platinum, swept over one eye and held with a silver star clip. A small crown from gold foam or metallic cardstock is light enough to forget. A long gown and dark streets don't mix, so hem or pin it to clear your silver flats. Carry a plush star or star wand, and add white gloves if you have them.
12. Matilda Blue Dress Costume

Matilda is about as easy as a book-day costume gets. A blue cotton dress with short sleeves, a white collar, a gathered waist and a knee-length skirt is her shape, often found in vintage or school-uniform racks. White ankle socks and black Mary Janes keep it tidy. A red ribbon headband in a straight brown bob adds the bright spot. Carry a stack of children's books or a library card. A red cardigan adds warmth, and every piece goes straight back into a normal wardrobe afterward.
13. Madeline Blue School Dress Costume

Madeline's dress is dark blue with a crisp white collar, falling near the knee. Tie a red ribbon beneath the collar and add white socks with black flats. The wide-brim yellow hat with a black ribbon is the piece that matters most; if you can only find a straw hat in another colour, spray paint for fabric works on straw. Short auburn hair or longer hair tucked behind the shoulders sits under it. Carry a picture book or a small cardboard model of a Paris landmark. A navy coat goes over the top outdoors.
14. Bo Peep Blue Dress Costume

Bo Peep needs volume, so a pale blue full-skirted dress over a white lace-trimmed petticoat is the start. A pink satin sash at the waist and a blue bonnet with pink ribbon over soft blonde ringlets do the rest. I'd make the crook from a pool noodle bent into a hook and wrapped in white ribbon; it's soft if it bumps someone, though it needs a dowel inside to stand straight. White tights, low pink or blue shoes, white gloves and a small plush sheep finish the costume. The pastel palette fits a group too.
15. Blue Fairy Dress Costume

A glittery tulle overskirt makes almost any blue dress into a fairy. Sapphire, turquoise and powder blue all work, at knee or maxi length. I make the overskirt on its own elastic waistband so it slips on over the dress and comes off after. Translucent wings with silver edging and metallic flats complete the body. Loose waves or a braided crown with tiny star clips suits the hair. A silver star wand and a pouch of paper stars are fun props. Add a sheer cape or pale silver cardigan for a cold evening.
16. Ice Princess Blue Dress Costume

An ice princess lets you skip copying a specific character. A pale blue velvet, satin or sequinned dress in a comfortable length, a sheer silver cape and a light crystal-look crown are enough. Velvet can feel warm indoors, so I'd pick satin for a heated party and velvet for an outdoor one. White tights with silver ankle boots finish the legs. Face gems around the eyes hold better on clean, oil-free skin. White faux-fur trim at the shoulders adds warmth, but make it removable; fur gets hot fast in a crowded room.
17. Blue Mermaid Dress Costume

A fitted teal or ocean-blue dress with sequins, scales or an iridescent finish becomes a mermaid you can walk in. If the skirt is plain, I gather turquoise tulle onto a ribbon and pin it near the hem as a fin, leaving plenty of room for your stride. Metallic sandals or aqua flats beat a restrictive tail. Beachy waves with pearl clips and small shells suit the hair. Blend blue, green and silver shadow with a coral lip. Carry a shell bag or a pearl-covered mirror, and layer pearl necklaces.
18. Blue Witch Dress Costume

A navy or royal blue maxi dress makes a fresh change from the usual black witch. Bell sleeves, ruffles or a tiered skirt all suit the shape. The pointed blue hat with silver ribbon and fabric stars is the giveaway, and a hat with a stiff brim stays on in wind if you add a small comb sewn inside the band. Striped blue-and-white tights with buckled ankle boots finish the legs. A few star stickers near the eyes add whimsy. Carry a twig broom or a spellbook notebook, with a short velvet cape on top.
19. Starry Night Blue Dress Costume

A dark blue maxi or midi dress becomes a night sky with silver and gold stars. I cluster them at the bodice and hem rather than spreading them evenly, which looks more like a sky. Removable fashion tape holds light stars, but it lets go on velvet, so I use a couple of safety pins from the inside there. A crescent moon headband and sparkly silver flats finish the look. Tiny battery-operated lights in a braided halo glow well in the dark; tuck the battery pack into the bun. Gold liner and a sheer navy cape scattered with glitter dots finish the drama.
20. Rain Cloud Blue Dress Costume

A sky blue fit-and-flare dress makes a playful rain cloud. White felt raindrops hang from clear thread under the skirt or sleeves; I keep them short, because long strands tangle within an hour at a party. A headband covered in fluffy white craft batting is the cloud. Pale gray tights with silver rain boots suit the weather theme. Keep hair in a ponytail so it doesn't fight the headpiece. A clear umbrella with removable blue ribbon raindrops is the prop, and it's useful if it actually rains.
21. Blue Butterfly Dress Costume

A bright blue dress with large patterned wings makes a butterfly. The dress needs a fitted bodice so the wing straps have something to sit against, and a flowing skirt for movement. Black tights and blue flats keep the legs simple. Shoulder-strap wings dig in after a while, so I slip thin padding over the straps. A slim antenna headband over a smooth bun leaves the wings as the focus. Blue shadow with tiny symmetrical dots at the outer corners is a nice touch. A black ribbon at the waist ties the colours together.
22. Blue Peacock Dress Costume

A royal blue dress takes a peacock very well. Add green, turquoise and gold feather-eye appliqués on removable patches; felt circles with a little fabric paint are cheaper than buying them. A small fan of faux feathers at the back of the waist looks better than a huge tail and lets you sit down. A sleek high bun with three short feathers suits the shape. Turquoise shadow and gold highlighter catch the light. Choose synthetic feathers, which shed less, and carry a compact gold clutch with statement earrings.
23. Porcelain Doll Blue Dress Costume

A lace-trimmed powder blue dress makes a sweet porcelain doll, not a creepy one. Puff sleeves, a high collar and a full knee-length skirt are the shape, with white tights, lace ankle socks and polished Mary Janes. Ringlets or curled pigtails with a large satin bow suit it. The makeup is round rosy blush, defined lashes and a small pink lip. I'd skip cracked-face effects for family events. A teddy bear or toy teacup, white gloves and a cameo-style brooch finish the vintage feel.
24. Blue Scarecrow Dress Costume

A blue denim or cotton dress over a checked button-down shirt makes a scarecrow with a fall feel. Tie raffia loosely at the cuffs and hem, short and secure; long straw ends shed everywhere and catch in car doors. A floppy straw hat with a sunflower and two low braids with blue ribbon finish the head. Freckles and stitched lines drawn around the mouth with brown liner do the face. Felt patches pinned on with safety pins look handmade without marking the dress. Carry a fabric crow or a basket of artificial leaves.
25. Blue Flight Attendant Dress Costume

A structured navy sheath is the base for a retro flight attendant. A slim belt, a neck scarf and a small navy pillbox or side cap make it read as a uniform. The scarf is the hardest detail to get right; a thin square folded into a small knot at the side of the neck looks more period than a loose bow. A smooth bun, defined liner and red lipstick suit the era. Carry a small rolling suitcase or a tray with plastic cups, and make your own wing badge rather than copying a real airline. A cropped navy blazer adds warmth.
26. 1950s Blue Prom Queen Costume

A full-skirted blue party dress over a tulle petticoat is the 1950s prom queen. Petticoats make the skirt; if yours is limp, two layers of stiff net on an elastic waist give that classic bell. A sparkly belt, white gloves, pearls and low silver heels finish the outfit. Vintage curls and a light rhinestone tiara do the head. A satin sash reading Prom Queen is simple to make with iron-on letters. Carry a small bouquet of artificial flowers. It's comfortable enough to dance in all night.
27. Blue Crayon Dress Costume

A royal blue shift dress turns into a crayon with a black felt wavy border at the neckline and hem. Removable fabric tape holds felt for a night, though I tack the ends with a few stitches so they don't curl. The tall pointed hat from blue poster board needs a comfortable elastic under the chin. Blue tights and matching sneakers keep the single colour going. A low bun fits under the hat. Use simple black stripes rather than any brand logo, and carry an oversized cardboard crayon label.
28. The Blue Dress Meme Costume

This one is a costume for a party where people talk. A royal blue bodycon or shift dress gets black ribbon down one side and gold ribbon down the other, so both sides of the famous colour debate appear at once. Wear one black shoe and one gold shoe with the same heel height, and split your jewellery the same way. Split-colour eye makeup with black liner on one side and gold shadow on the other is the finishing joke. Carry two small signs, one reading blue and black, the other white and gold. Expect to explain it at least once.
29. Blue Greek Goddess Costume

A flowing cobalt or turquoise maxi dress makes a mythology-inspired goddess. A one-shoulder dress works as is, or drape matching chiffon across one shoulder. Brooches pull on thin chiffon, so I put a small piece of interfacing behind the fabric at the pin point. A metallic gold belt, flat lace-up sandals and a loose braided updo with gold leaves finish the shape. Bronze shadow and glowing skin suit it. Carry a laurel wreath or a scroll. Keep it to broad classical imagery rather than any living religion or culture.
30. Blue Masquerade Dress Costume

The masquerade look is the most glamorous of the thirty: a satin, velvet or sequinned blue midi dress, a silver or blue eye mask with rhinestones, and a structured clutch. Masks narrow your view more than you expect, so I choose wide eye openings and put the mask on a ribbon-trimmed handle. Hold it up for photos and lower it the rest of the time. Smoky navy shadow and a berry lip show well around the mask. Long gloves and a short sheer cape add theatre. Metallic heels or embellished flats both work.
Adding Costume Pieces You Can Unpick in Minutes
Almost every look above adds something to the dress: a collar, stars, a fin, felt patches. The goal is to attach them firmly enough for a night out and remove them without a mark. These are the methods I use, roughly from least to most secure.
- Double-sided fashion tape holds light pieces like paper stars and ribbon on cotton. It fails on velvet, sequins and anything stretchy.
- Safety pins from the inside are invisible on the outside if you pin through the seam allowance or a lining, not the outer fabric.
- Long hand basting stitches through a seam line hold tulle overskirts, collars and fins. Snip one end and pull, and they're gone.
- Snap tape or sew-on snaps on a ribbon tab work for capes and anything you'll take on and off during the evening.
- Skip hook-and-loop tape near tulle, lace and knits. The hook side snags fine fabric and pulls threads.
Avoid hot glue directly on a dress you want to keep. It soaks into the fibres and leaves a stiff patch that won't wash out. If a piece needs glue, glue it to a felt backing and pin or stitch the felt in place instead.
How Many Characters Can Your Closet Dress Play?
An everyday blue dress can carry far more costumes than it looks like it should. A collar, cape, apron, wig, the right shoes and one prop change it completely. Check your own closet before buying anything, then hunt the thrift store for the accessories. Removable ribbon, felt, tulle and fabric tape let you customise without damaging the dress. Plan for comfortable shoes and headpieces that stay put. From storybook characters to a rain cloud and a meme, the same dress can be something new every year.
