Cowboy is a broad costume theme. The same hat and boots can lead you to a dusty ranch hand, a rhinestone rodeo queen, a ghost rider or a space cowboy, depending on what you put between them. I've planned each of the thirty looks below head to toe, with the clothing base, boots, hat, hair, makeup and the one or two props that tell people who you are. Fringe jackets, pointed boots, dark denim and chunky buckles are easy to find secondhand, and a few craft-shop stars or rhinestones go a long way. Pick a direction first, then raid your closet.

The Details That Say Cowboy Instead of Country Weekend
A plaid shirt and jeans can look like everyday clothes. What makes it a costume is a handful of Western construction details, and once you know them you can spot them on a thrift rail from across the shop.
- Pearl snaps and a pointed yoke. The shaped panel across the shoulders and the snap fastenings are the most cowboy features a shirt can have.
- A crease-front or pinched-crown hat with a brim that curls up at the sides. A flat, floppy brim looks more like a sun hat.
- Bootcut or straight jeans worn over the boot, or tucked in only if the boots are decorated.
- A belt wider than you'd normally wear, with a buckle that is bigger than you think is reasonable.
Two or three of these together are enough. If your shirt has no yoke, the buckle and hat can do more of the work. If you own a good hat and nothing else, put it with dark jeans and a bandana, and you already look like a cowboy.
1. Classic Denim Cowboy Costume

The pearl-snap shirt is what makes this read as a cowboy rather than someone in a checked shirt, so look for one with snaps and a pointed yoke across the shoulders. Tuck it into straight-leg jeans, then add a wide brown belt with a decorative buckle and, if the night is cold, a fitted suede vest. Brown boots and a felt hat are the base. Loose waves, a low braid or two neat braids sit well under the brim. Warm bronzer, brushed brows and a muted red lip keep the face natural. A red neck bandana and a coiled rope do the explaining. Rub the knees and hems with fine sandpaper for a worn look rather than cutting holes.
2. Pink Rhinestone Cowboy Costume

Pink and rhinestones turn plain Western pieces into a party costume, and they are kinder to beginners than they look. A pink fringe jacket with shorts, a skort or flared pants over a white fitted top is the base. Iron-on rhinestones around the neckline grip cotton well, while on stretchy fabric they tend to pop off when you move. Add a pink hat, a crystal belt and metallic pink or white boots. Loose curls, glittery pink shadow and glossy lips match the sparkle. A star purse or toy microphone is the prop. On a budget, decorate a thrifted denim vest with pink fringe instead, and wear nude tights for warmth.
3. Black Outlaw Cowboy Costume

An outlaw in all black needs no fake blood to feel dramatic. A fitted black Western shirt, high-waisted black jeans and a cropped faux-leather vest are the base, with a long black duster for movement and warmth outside. Black boots and a slightly beaten-up wide-brim hat keep the palette tight; I'd crease and dust the hat a little so it doesn't look fresh from the packet. A low ponytail or windswept waves, smudged charcoal liner, strong brows and a berry lip suit it. Wear the black bandana loose at the neck, not over your face. Silver hardware, fingerless gloves and an old-style map keep the pieces from merging into one dark shape.
4. White Rodeo Queen Cowboy Costume

White is the colour of the rodeo queen, and it needs careful planning because every mark shows. A white Western shirt with silver piping, white flared jeans and a cropped fringe jacket are cinched with a rhinestone belt, then white boots carry the line down to the floor. Dress a structured white hat with small crystals or silver stars. Big brushed curls with a side part, glowing skin, winged liner, rosy blush and a red lip suit the pageant mood. A satin sash with a made-up rodeo title and a small trophy or ribbon make the props. I'd put lipstick on before the shirt goes over your head, and carry wipes.
5. Silver Space Cowboy Costume

Space cowboy keeps the Western outline and swaps the fabrics for metallic ones. Silver flared pants or a metallic jumpsuit with a white or holographic Western shirt that keeps its pointed yoke are the base. Silver boots and a hat trimmed with reflective stars follow. A cropped holographic fringe vest adds movement without hiding much. A sleek high ponytail, polished waves or tinsel strands, icy shadow, tiny face gems and pearly gloss finish the face. Face gems stay on longer with a dot of lash glue than with their own sticker backing. A clear bag of light stars or a planet accessory, a metallic belt and reflective cuffs are enough; skip bulky helmet pieces.
6. Disco Cowboy Costume

Disco cowboy is a dancing costume, so I'd choose every piece by how it moves. A silver or gold sequin top tucked into high-waisted white bell-bottoms, plus a cropped Western jacket with long metallic fringe across the sleeves and back, will swing with you. Platform cowboy boots in white or silver bridge the two eras, though only if you've already walked in platforms. A hat with mirrored tiles around the band catches the light. Big curls, shimmering shadow, peach blush and glossy lips suit it. A disco-ball purse or star earrings add one more flash. Stretchy flares and light fringe let you dance all night.
7. Gothic Cowboy Costume

Gothic cowboy is the elegant end of the dark looks, and it is easy to wear somewhere public. A black high-neck blouse with small ruffles, a long black skirt or black flared jeans and a fitted faux-leather vest set the outline. Add pointed black boots, a wide belt with antique-silver hardware and a black hat with a band of lace. Long waves or a thick side braid, plum smoky eyes, pale pink blush and a deep berry lip keep it moody without gore. A battery lantern is the prop. The thing that makes all-black work in photos is mixing finishes: matte cotton, open lace and shiny faux leather side by side.
8. Ghost Cowboy Costume

A ghost cowboy works because everything looks faded, as if it has been out in the desert a hundred years. A soft grey Western shirt, washed black jeans, a distressed charcoal vest and a light grey duster that moves when you walk are the clothes. Grey or weathered black boots and a faded felt hat finish the outfit. For dust, I'd use cornflour or chalk patted on and shaken off outdoors; it brushes away, but test a corner of dark fabric first. Loose hair with temporary silver ends, pale foundation, cool grey contour and smoky eyes give a stylised spectral face. A battery lantern or rolled map and a sheer grey neck scarf finish it.
9. Steampunk Cowboy Costume

Steampunk is the most detailed look here, and the risk is a hat so loaded with gears that it tips forward. Keep decorations plastic and light. The base is a cream high-neck blouse, a brown fitted vest and striped trousers tucked into lace-up cowboy boots, with a short bustle overskirt or draped hip panel if you like a theatrical outline. A brown top hat with a curved Western brim takes goggles, gears and copper ribbon. Pinned curls, a braided bun or loose waves, bronze shadow, defined liner and brick lipstick suit it. A compass, pocket watch or leather-look journal, plus fingerless gloves and layered belts, finish it.
10. Victorian Cowboy Costume

Victorian cowboy is the romantic one, and it is far easier to walk in than real period dress. A long cream blouse with puffed sleeves, a high collar and fine pintucks tucks into a brown or rust riding skirt, with a fitted embroidered vest on top. I'd choose low-heeled leather cowboy boots over dainty period shoes for a night on pavements. A structured felt hat with a narrow ribbon and a low braided bun suit it. Soft brown liner, rosy cheeks and a muted rose lip keep it vintage. Carry a small fabric pouch, a paper train ticket or a folded map, with a cameo brooch and gloves. Keep the hem clear of the ground.
11. Prairie Cowboy Costume

Prairie is the soft, floral side of the theme, and it is comfortable enough to wear all evening. A long-sleeved prairie dress in a small floral print, ideally with a tiered skirt and a modest ruffled neckline, goes under a fitted denim or suede-look vest with a brown belt at the waist. Worn-in boots and a straw or light tan hat suit it. A loose side braid, natural makeup, freckles and a rosy lip keep it fresh. A woven basket of fabric wildflowers or a canvas satchel is the prop. Leggings go under the dress if it's cold. Match the hat, belt and boots in one brown or tan so it looks planned.
12. Sheriff Cowboy Costume

The badge is the whole sheriff, so buy a good one and pin it where a real one sits, on the left side of the chest just below the shoulder. A tan pearl-snap shirt with dark brown pants or straight jeans, a structured brown vest, a wide belt, brown boots and a matching felt hat are the uniform. A low ponytail or smooth shoulder-length waves, neutral shadow, defined lashes and a warm nude lip look tidy. Carry a clipboard of made-up town notices or a ring of oversized keys. I'd leave toy weapons at home; the badge and the official look do the job. A handmade town emblem on the sleeve personalises it.
13. Ranch Hand Cowboy Costume

A ranch hand is the most believable cowboy, because everything looks like it has done some work. A faded chambray shirt with relaxed jeans and a canvas chore vest is the base, sleeves rolled, with a sturdy brown belt and a plain buckle. Scuffed boots and a weathered hat help, so don't polish anything. Two braids, a low bun or a ponytail under a bandana, a little bronzer, natural brows, freckles and tinted balm keep the face plain. Work gloves, a metal-look lunch pail or a plush farm animal make honest props. A red or navy neckerchief adds colour. In the cold, a plaid jacket goes on top with the belt still showing.
14. Rodeo Rider Cowboy Costume

Rodeo riders are athletic, so this costume should let you move freely. A bright fitted pearl-snap shirt with contrast piping or embroidered shoulders, bootcut jeans and a big buckle make the base. Leather-look chaps over the jeans are the detail that sells it; fasten them firmly at the waist and check you can climb stairs in them. Supportive boots and a crease-front hat with a tidy brim finish it. A high ponytail or tight braid stays put. I'd use waterproof mascara, warm blush and a neutral lip that won't need touching up. Pin a contestant number to your back and carry a fabric ribbon. Light faux suede keeps the chaps from feeling stiff.
15. Country Singer Cowboy Costume

A country singer costume should shine under party lights, and the trick is repeating one metal. A rhinestone-trimmed Western shirt with high-waisted flares or a fringed midi skirt, plus a fitted sequined jacket, give you the stage. White, red or metallic boots and a coordinated hat frame you top to bottom. Polished, full curls, winged liner, glowing cheeks and a glossy red or pink lip suit the performer. A toy microphone or microphone-shaped purse explains the character without copying any one singer. Star earrings and a crystal belt add more. Repeat that one metallic colour on the hat trim, jacket, belt and boots so the sparkle looks intentional.
16. Neon Cowboy Costume

Neon cowboy is the easiest to spot across a busy party, and the most useful for being seen on a dark street. Black jeans or flared pants and a neon green, orange or electric pink Western shirt carry the colour, with a black vest that has matching neon fringe on the back. Black boots with removable neon cuffs and a black hat with bright cord or reflective trim finish it. A sleek ponytail with clip-in neon strands, graphic liner in the same accent shade and clear gloss keep it playful. Glow bracelets, a reflective star badge and a neon crossbody bag help. Stay with one or two neon colours, and tape down light-up trim with the battery pack somewhere you can reach.
17. Red Monochrome Cowboy Costume

All red is simple to style and very bold. A red Western shirt with matching flares, or a belted red denim jumpsuit as a one-piece base, goes with a red fringe vest, red boots and a structured hat in a close shade. One red from head to toe can look like a uniform, so I'd mix textures and shades: suede-look, denim and satin, crimson next to cherry. A smooth high ponytail or long brushed waves, sharp black liner, warm red blush and a matching lip pull the face in. A silver buckle breaks up the colour, and a red star bag or bandana is the last touch.
18. Gold Rodeo Cowboy Costume

Gold rodeo is warm and rich, but too many sequins make it hard to wear and hot to dance in. A cream fitted top under a gold fringe jacket, with white flared pants or a soft gold skirt, keeps the shine on one piece. Metallic boots and a cream hat with gold trim tie the top and bottom together. Soft waves or a polished low ponytail, bronze shadow, golden highlighter and a peachy lip suit the glow. A wide belt with a bright buckle adds structure, and a gold award ribbon or small trophy is an easy prop. Star earrings and a gold bandana knotted at the wrist finish it.
19. Fringe Jacket Cowboy Costume

An extra-long fringe jacket is a costume on its own, so keep the rest plain. A fitted white Western shirt and dark bootcut jeans go under a tan, rust or turquoise faux-suede jacket with fringe on the sleeves and back, so it swings when you walk. A matching hat, brown boots and a statement belt complete the outline. Loose waves or a low braided ponytail, copper shadow, warm bronzer and a rose-brown lip keep it earthy. Carry a small tooled-look bag and knot a patterned scarf at the neck. If you're making the jacket, sew the fringe along the seams, and check that sleeve fringe stops above your fingertips.
20. Cow Print Cowboy Costume

Cow print is a strong graphic, so one or two big pieces are plenty. Black jeans or a black denim skirt over opaque tights, a white fitted shirt and a cow-print vest, cropped jacket or fringed overshirt are the base. Black-and-white boots look fun, but plain black ones will get far more wear next year. A white or black hat with cow-print ribbon around the crown pulls the print upward. Two low braids or bouncy waves, simple black liner, rosy cheeks and a red lip keep the face clean against the pattern. A mini cowbell or a small black-and-white bag is the prop.
21. Denim Dress Cowboy Costume

A denim dress is the one-piece cowboy base I'd pick for a party with a lot of sitting down. A button-front mini, midi or knee-length denim dress with room to walk and sit, a wide Western belt, tan boots and a matching hat are the costume. A suede fringe vest adds texture, and nude or patterned tights add warmth and coverage. A loose braid, half-up waves or a low ponytail, softly defined eyes, peach blush and tinted balm keep it fresh. A red bandana and a small canvas bag are practical. Embroidered star patches make it more costume-like. If the dress is very short, wear bike shorts underneath and you'll forget about it.
22. Leather Vest Cowboy Costume

A faux-leather vest gives structure to softer Western pieces, but stiff vinyl creaks and rubs at the armholes, so I'd look for one with some stretch. Layer a brown or black vest over a cream pearl-snap shirt, add dark straight-leg jeans, a wide leather-look belt, sturdy boots and a felt hat matching the vest. Textured waves or a low braid over one shoulder, brown liner, bronzer and a terracotta lip suit it. A patterned neckerchief and leather-look cuffs add detail, and a canteen or folded trail map is the prop. Embossing, contrast stitching or antique-silver snaps make a plain vest look special.
23. Western Poncho Cowboy Costume

A poncho is the warmest cowboy layer on this list, and it hides plenty of thermals underneath. A fitted black or cream long-sleeve top with straight jeans goes under a striped Western poncho, belted for a waist or left loose. Brown boots and a dark felt hat with a braided band finish it. One long braid or soft waves pushed behind the shoulders keep hair off the wool. Warm neutral makeup, softly smoked eyes and a cinnamon lip suit the traveller theme, with a canvas satchel or rolled map. Choose one that ends above the knee so boots and jeans still show. Heavy wool gets hot indoors, so lighter is better for a house party.
24. Scarecrow Cowboy Costume

Scarecrow and cowboy share most of their wardrobe, so this hybrid is quick to put together. A plaid Western shirt under denim overalls, or relaxed jeans with a patched vest, is the base. Pin on felt patches in orange, yellow and brown with safety pins so the clothes survive. Brown boots and a straw hat finish the clothing. Two loose braids tied with raffia-coloured ribbon suit it. Draw soft stitch lines at the mouth with a brown pencil, add a warm orange nose and freckles over rosy cheeks. Carry fabric sunflowers or a felt crow. A neck bandana keeps it cowboy, and short raffia pieces at the cuffs hint at straw without scratching.
25. Skeleton Cowboy Costume

The skeleton cowboy relies on clean face paint more than anything else. A black Western shirt and jeans with white felt bones attached, or a skeleton-print base layer, go under a black fringe vest, silver buckle, black boots and a wide-brim hat. Keep hair in a low ponytail or braid. For the face, I'd outline the eye sockets and nose in black, fill the rest with white, and draw simple lines across the lips; nothing realistic. Felt bones curl and peel if they're only glued, so stitch them at a few points or use fabric glue a day ahead. A white battery lantern or black rose and silver star earrings finish it.
26. Witch Cowboy Costume

The witch cowboy is a crossover, and the hat is where the two meet. Shape a wide-brim hat with a slightly peaked crown, then wrap it with purple ribbon and small silver stars. A black puff-sleeve blouse, a dark purple fringe vest and black flares or a long tiered skirt are the clothes, with pointed black boots. Loose waves with subtle violet strands, purple smoky eyes, luminous skin and a plum lip suit it. Carry a little broom tied with Western ribbon or a bottle-shaped purse labelled as a made-up desert tonic. Layered necklaces and a moon buckle add character and keep it lighthearted.
27. Alien Cowboy Costume

Alien cowboy is cheerful, not creepy, as long as the green stays bright. Metallic silver flares with a fitted green Western shirt or bodysuit, a silver fringe vest, matching boots and a metallic hat with small planets are the base. A high ponytail with green strands or a smooth pale-green wig suit it. Synthetic wigs shed at the ends and tangle under a hat brim, so brush yours with a wide comb and a little detangler before the night. Shimmery green shadow, silver liner and tiny face gems make friendly alien makeup. A planet bag or a cardboard communicator is the prop. Keep antennae small, or leave them off if the hat wobbles.
28. Coastal Cowboy Costume

Coastal cowboy brings a summery palette to October, which means planning a warm layer. A white eyelet blouse tucked into light-wash flares or a flowing pale blue maxi skirt, a sand-coloured fringe vest and cream boots are the base. A straw hat with turquoise ribbon at the crown suits it. Loose beach waves or a casual side braid, luminous skin, light bronzer, soft blue shadow and a coral lip keep it fresh. A woven crossbody with a star charm and turquoise-look jewellery add colour, and a light scarf replaces the bandana. A neutral cardigan under the vest makes it workable on a cool night.
29. Vintage Western Show Cowboy Costume

This look borrows from old Western stage shows, where embroidery and contrast piping did all the talking. A fitted button-front shirt with floral embroidery across the shoulders goes with high-waisted trousers or an A-line midi skirt. Add a cropped bolero jacket with contrast trim, a wide decorative belt, two-tone boots and a structured hat. Brushed curls or a smooth rolled updo, winged liner, defined lashes, rosy cheeks and a red lip give the classic face. A hand fan or a programme for a made-up Western show is the prop, with gloves and star earrings. Embroidered shirts like this turn up at thrift shops more often than you'd guess.
30. Thrifted DIY Cowboy Costume

You can put together a convincing cowboy without buying anything new. A plaid shirt, straight jeans, a leather-look belt, a denim vest and neutral boots from home or the thrift shop are the base. Faux-leather boot covers turn ankle boots into cowboy boots for an evening. Sew or pin fabric fringe along the vest's yoke, and add star patches. Wrap a patterned scarf around the crown of a cheap felt hat. Braids or loose waves, bronzer, freckles, brown liner and tinted balm make easy makeup. A cardboard town sign or rolled map is the prop. Repeat the same brown, denim and red throughout, and mismatched secondhand pieces will look planned.
Ghost, Skeleton and Alien Face Paint That Lasts Until Midnight
Several of these looks rely on face paint, and the usual problems are the same every year: white base cracks, black lines smudge, and everything ends up on your collar. I do the same few steps every time.
- Patch-test any new paint on the inside of your wrist a day or two before. Redness or itching means skip it.
- Start on clean skin with a light moisturiser, and let it sink in so the paint doesn't slide.
- Apply water-activated paint in thin layers with a damp sponge. A thick layer cracks once it dries and you start talking.
- Press translucent setting powder over the whole face, then add the black details on top and powder lightly again.
- Put your shirt or jacket on before painting, or drape a towel over the collar while you work.
Taking it off matters as much. Cream paint comes off best with an oil cleanser or balm massaged in before washing, and water-based paint lifts with warm water and gentle soap. Rubbing hard at the eyes with wipes is what leaves skin sore the next morning, so take your time.
Cutting Your Own Fringe From Thrifted Suede
Many of these costumes rely on fringe, and ready-made fringe trim can be expensive or thin. An old faux-suede or suede skirt from a thrift shop gives you a lot of fringe for very little. Cut it into strips of the length you want, leaving a solid band at the top about an inch deep, then stitch that band along a yoke, sleeve seam or vest hem. Real and faux suede don't fray, so the cut ends need no finishing. Cut the strips to roughly the same width with a ruler and sharp scissors, or a rotary cutter if you have one, so it hangs evenly.
Pearl Snaps, a Good Hat and Your Own Twist
A good cowboy costume is one people recognise at a glance and one you can still wear comfortably at midnight. Denim and plaid get you there fastest; rhinestones, metallic fringe, neon or themed face paint push it further. Whichever way you go, plan the whole outfit: a clear base, boots you can walk in, a layer for the weather, hair that works under the hat, and one or two Western accessories that carry the theme. Swap colours, change skirt lengths or loosen the fit to suit you. Most of it is already in a wardrobe or on a thrift rail, which keeps the whole thing cheap and fun to put together.
