The Despicable Me and Minions films have built a far bigger cast than one pair of yellow overalls. Gru's family, a string of colourful villains, the classic Minions and the newer faces from Despicable Me 4 all translate into wearable outfits. For each one below I've given the clothing base, the hair or wig, simple makeup, footwear and a soft prop. Most of it can come from a closet, a thrift shop or a craft drawer. That's what makes this franchise so good for mixed-age groups: adults, kids and even babies can each take a character without anyone wearing something miserable.

Casting a Despicable Me Group Before Anyone Shops
When a family or a group of friends asks me to plan this theme, I cast it like a film before anyone buys a thing. The franchise splits neatly into three camps, and each suits different people.
- Gru's household: Gru, Lucy, Margo, Edith, Agnes and Gru Jr. Good for families, because every age has a role and nobody needs face paint.
- The Minions: cheap to repeat and great for kids, but only if each one differs. Vary the eye count, the hair and the prop so people can name them.
- The villains: Vector, El Macho, Scarlet and the Vicious 6 suit adults who want tailoring, wigs and a bit of theatre.
Give the youngest children the softest, warmest roles, like Edith, Agnes or Bob. Save the costumes with foam panels or tall wigs for adults who can manage them in a crowd. One larger person as Kevin and one small child as Bob reads funnier than two identical Minions of the same height.
1. Gru Costume With Black Coat

Gru is mostly a black coat and a scarf, which is why he's the easiest adult role to fill. Start with a black zip-up coat, slim black pants and a gray sweater or dark shirt, then wrap a gray-and-black striped scarf so the ends hang over the coat. A bald cap gives his smooth head. I'd blend the cap edge into the forehead with a little foundation, because an unblended ridge is the giveaway in every photo. Light gray shading around the nose and brows, a cardboard freeze ray or a blueprint tube, and black lace-up boots finish him. Indoors, swap the coat for a fitted black jacket so you don't overheat.
2. Lucy Wilde Costume With Blue Dress

Lucy is bright, so she stands out without any effort. Wear a sleeveless turquoise or medium-blue dress with a fitted waist and knee-length hem, and add a light blue scarf with pink dots. You can dot a plain scarf with fabric paint and a pencil eraser, which gives you round, even spots. The wig is a vivid orange-red chin-length bob with curled ends. Peach blush and pink lipstick keep her cheerful, and low white or pale blue heels stay comfortable. A homemade agent badge or toy communicator is the prop. On a cold night a matching fitted coat goes over the dress without hiding the colour.
3. Margo Costume With Plaid Skirt

Margo's outfit is a school uniform, so it's easy to build from everyday clothes. A dark blazer over a white button-down and a plaid skirt in brown, navy or burgundy sets the base, with knee-high socks or opaque tights. The black rectangular glasses do more to identify her than anything else, so I treat them as the main prop rather than an extra. A straight dark brown wig with blunt bangs suits her, though long brown hair brushed smooth works too. Keep makeup minimal. Mary Janes or flat loafers are fine for trick-or-treating, and she pairs naturally with Edith and Agnes for a three-sister group.
4. Edith Costume With Pink Hat

Edith is the warmest costume on this list, which makes her my pick for a cold trick-or-treat route. A burgundy or dark purple skirt, matching leggings and a purple sweater or zip-up jacket form the base. The bright pink knit hat with long earflaps and tassels carries the character, so it's worth finding or knitting a good one. Blonde hair can hang loose under it, or use a straight blonde wig. A few soft freckles and rosy blush are enough makeup. Snow boots or sturdy ankle boots and a small flashlight or toy magnifying glass finish her. Nothing here needs sewing, and the colour blocking does all the identifying.
5. Agnes Costume With Striped Shirt

Agnes is the sweetest of the three girls. Pair a yellow-and-brown striped T-shirt with denim overalls or a denim pinafore, white crew socks and white sneakers. Her long black hair goes in a high ponytail with a red scrunchie, or use a black ponytail wig. The fluffy white unicorn with a pink mane is non-negotiable. Kids will carry it all night, so I'd choose one light enough to tuck under an arm. For chilly weather, layer a yellow cardigan under the overalls. She suits kids, petite adults and families recreating Gru's household together.
6. Dru Costume With White Suit

Dru is a fun contrast to Gru's all-black outfit and a good role for anyone who doesn't want to wear yellow. A fitted white blazer, matching trousers and a cream or white turtleneck set the base. The long blond wig should be brushed smooth and a little exaggerated. Keep makeup light, with neat brows and subtle contour. White loafers keep the whole thing coordinated, and a metallic key card or cardboard car remote makes a safe prop. One honest warning about all-white outfits: they pick up every smudge of face paint from the Minions standing beside you, so I'd keep a stain pen in a pocket.
7. Dr. Nefario Costume With White Lab Coat

Dr. Nefario mixes eccentric scientist clothes with very simple DIY. A long white lab coat goes over a pale shirt, a brown sweater vest and dark trousers. His hair is the build: a bald cap ringed with wispy white costume hair, which I glue to the cap in short tufts rather than one long strip so it doesn't lift when you turn your head. Oversized round glasses and light gray contour give the face. Carry a clipboard of silly sketches or plastic test tubes filled with water, never glass. Brown lace-ups or loafers finish him, and he's a natural anchor for an adult in a Gru-and-Minions group.
8. Vector Costume With Orange Tracksuit

Vector's orange tracksuit is visible from across any room. Wear a matching orange zip-up jacket and pants over a white high-neck shirt, add white sneakers, then a short brown bowl-cut wig and big square black glasses. The white chest design can be cut from felt and pinned on, so the tracksuit stays usable afterward. A foam shark or an orange backpack makes a good prop. There's no mask and nothing restrictive here, which is why I hand Vector to whoever wants to stay comfortable all night. Put him next to Gru for an easy rivalry duo.
9. El Macho Costume With Black Shirt

El Macho is about bulk and a big mustache. Start with a fitted black short-sleeve shirt tucked into black trousers, then add a wide belt with a large buckle and sturdy black boots. A dark brown wig brushed back and a thick brown costume mustache carry the face, with bronze-toned makeup and strong brows. Drape a burgundy scarf at the neck for colour. For his broad chest, a thin foam vest under the shirt looks better than pillows, which shift and lump within an hour. Carry a restaurant menu or tray, and you have a theatrical costume that stays family-friendly.
10. Balthazar Bratt Costume With Purple Jumpsuit

Balthazar Bratt brings pure 1980s energy. A purple jumpsuit, or a purple jacket with slim matching pants, goes over a black high-neck shirt with padded shoulders and silver trim. Metallic fabric tape is the quickest trim, though it peels on stretch fabric, so I tack the ends with a few stitches. The tall black mullet wig is essential, and a small fake mustache helps. Lavender shadow, black dance shoes or ankle boots, and a cardboard cassette player or a soft microphone complete him. Practise a few big dance poses; Bratt is half costume and half attitude.
11. Maxime Le Mal Costume With Green Suit

Maxime Le Mal suits fans of the newer films who like tailoring. A dark green suit goes over a lighter green shirt or turtleneck, with a patterned scarf or narrow cravat at the collar. Style a slick black wig with a pronounced widow's peak and add a thin curled mustache with skin-safe adhesive. I always patch-test that adhesive on the arm the day before, because some people react to it around the lip. Green shadow, defined brows and polished black shoes finish the look, with an insect-shaped foam pin as a small prop. Keep the suit neatly fitted, since his sharp silhouette is the character, and put Valentina beside him.
12. Valentina Costume With Black Dress

Valentina is the most wearable villain here, close enough to regular party clothes to reuse. A fitted black midi dress with structured shoulders or subtle green trim is the base, with a cropped black jacket if you want coverage. Wear a sleek black wig in a long ponytail. Winged liner, green shadow and berry lipstick give her polish, and green statement earrings tie her to Maxime. Shoes can be pointed flats or ankle boots. Resist piling on accessories, because her clean line is what reads, and stand next to a green-suited Maxime for the couple version.
13. Poppy Prescott Costume With Purple Uniform

Poppy Prescott is a villain-in-training, so her costume is a school uniform with a smirk. Wear a purple plaid skirt, white blouse, dark vest and purple blazer, plus knee-high socks or opaque tights. Long brown hair goes half-up, or use a smooth brunette wig with a center part. Keep makeup age-appropriate with natural blush and pink balm. School shoes or flat ankle boots and a purple notebook labelled with handmade plans finish her. She suits teens and older kids, and I like her for a child whose school bans masks and face paint, since she needs neither. She also joins Gru, Lucy and the girls for a Despicable Me 4 group.
14. Scarlet Overkill Costume With Red Dress

Scarlet Overkill is glamour without construction. A fitted red midi dress with a structured neckline and a slight flare, long black gloves, sheer black tights and black pumps or low block heels form the base. The shiny black wig is a high-volume 1960s bob with curled ends; I'd tease the crown and set it with spray before you leave, because cheap bob wigs flatten under their own weight. Winged liner, arched brows and a classic red lip. A red gem necklace and a cardboard crown add drama. She looks best next to Herb or with a group of retro villains.
15. Herb Overkill Costume With Purple Suit

Herb Overkill is for someone who loves retro tailoring. A deep purple suit or velvet blazer goes over a ruffled white shirt, with slim purple trousers and dark shoes. A shaggy brown wig with full sideburns gives his 1960s hair, and a costume mustache with curled ends finishes the face. Round tinted glasses add detail without covering anything. Carry a small toolbox of foam tools or a painted cardboard gadget. Velvet blazers turn up in thrift shops more often than you'd expect, and purple patterned socks are a cheap joke that people notice when you sit. Pair him with Scarlet for an easy couple.
16. Belle Bottom Costume With Purple Jumpsuit

Belle Bottom is the disco leader of the Vicious 6. Wear a shimmering purple wide-leg jumpsuit, or a purple wrap top with flared pants if you can't find one. A gold belt, big hoops and platform shoes with a stable heel set the era. Style a voluminous dark brown afro wig with a purple headband. Violet shadow, glossy lips and warm blush keep the makeup bright. A gold cardboard record or a glittery clutch is the prop. Shimmer knits can be thin, so I check them in a mirror under bright light and add a slip if needed. Belle is a natural lead for a Rise of Gru villain group.
17. Wild Knuckles Costume With Red Vest

Wild Knuckles is a thrift-store costume through and through. A mustard-yellow shirt, dark brown pants and a textured red vest are the base, with a wide belt in brown fabric or soft faux leather. The short gray wig, thick matching eyebrows and full gray mustache do the ageing, so keep the makeup to warm foundation and light cheek shading. Brown boots, fingerless gloves and a folded map or small travel bag finish him. Stick-on costume eyebrows lift with sweat, and I set mine with a dab of the same adhesive used for the mustache. He's good solo and better with a young Gru and a few Minions.
18. Jean Clawed Costume With Blue Jacket

Jean Clawed's lobster theme gives you a colourful villain with nothing frightening about it. Wear a dark blue fitted jacket and trousers over a red shirt, with a navy cap or short dark wig depending on the version. Exaggerated dark brows and subtle blue shadow give the face. For the claws, attach light red foam shapes to red gloves so your fingers still work and the claws come off when you eat. Round every foam edge, because crowds bump into anything sticking out. Dark blue boots and a small satchel finish him, and his red-and-blue palette is easy to tell apart in a villain group photo.
19. Stronghold Costume With Metal Chest Plate

Stronghold's broad, superhero-ish shape can be built safely from foam and athletic clothes. Start with a fitted gray long-sleeve shirt and matching pants, then add a light silver foam chest panel with drawn rivets and geometric lines. EVA foam takes silver paint well if you seal it first; unsealed foam soaks up the paint and dries patchy. A short dark wig, thick costume brows and silver-gray shading at the temples set the face. Foam shoulder panels add size without weight. Gray gloves, chunky boots and a cardboard strength meter finish him. He's best in the six-person villain group, but the metallic details carry on their own too.
20. Master Chow Costume With Green Robe

Master Chow's green outfit is comfortable and moves well. Choose a long green robe or wrap jacket over a yellow top and loose black pants, and tie it with a wide red fabric sash rather than a stiff belt. Hair goes in a smooth high bun, or use a black bun wig pinned firmly at the back. Natural foundation, subtle green shadow and a soft berry lip suit her. Flat cloth shoes or ankle boots keep it practical, and a folding fan or scroll makes a gentle prop. Base everything on the character's own animated colour palette rather than imitating any real culture, and the costume stays bright and tied to the film.
21. Kevin Minion Costume With Overalls

Kevin is the tall Minion, which makes him the obvious role for an adult or older teen. Wear a yellow long-sleeve shirt with denim overalls, black gloves and black work boots or sneakers. A short upright tuft of black costume hair goes on a yellow beanie or bald cap, and two silver-rimmed goggles with clear lenses give his two-eyed face. Use yellow face paint sparingly on visible skin with a little black liner around the eyes. I'd skip any rigid full-face mask; Minion masks fog and trap heat within minutes. A banana plush or Gru logo patch finishes him, and he can anchor a whole group of differently shaped Minions.
22. Stuart Minion Costume With Guitar

Stuart's single eye and his guitar separate him from every other Minion. A bright yellow hoodie or long-sleeve shirt goes under denim overalls, with black gloves and comfortable boots. Top a yellow beanie with short, neatly combed black costume hair. The one large goggle can be cut from craft foam around a clear plastic lens and held with a soft black strap. Make sure the lens sits over one of your eyes, not between them, or you'll be walking half-blind. A light foam guitar or ukulele is the prop, and it gives him a reason to pose in every group photo.
23. Bob Minion Costume With Teddy Bear

Bob is the small one, so he suits younger kids or petite adults. Pair a yellow sweatshirt with blue overalls, black gloves and black sneakers, and add a few thin black hairs across a yellow beanie. Bob has two eyes in different colours, so use light silver goggles with one green-tinted and one brown-tinted lens, and keep the tint pale so children can still see in the dark. A little yellow face paint on the forehead and cheeks, rosy blush, and a small brown teddy bear finish him. Rolling the overall cuffs makes him look shorter and keeps young kids from tripping. Soft fabrics make Bob good for school parades and trick-or-treating.
24. Otto Minion Costume With Braces

Otto is round, cheerful and wears braces, all of which make him funny. A roomy yellow sweatshirt goes under loose overalls, with a soft foam belly panel if you want a rounder shape; test that you can still sit and climb stairs in it. Black gloves and supportive sneakers, a cluster of upright black hair on a yellow beanie and two round silver goggles build the body. For the braces, I draw them on over the lips or use a costume piece that sits outside the mouth, never anything attached to real teeth. A smooth foam stone is his prop. He's a good choice for kids and adults who want something comfortable with a character joke built in.
25. Mel Minion Costume With Side Hair

Mel's grumpy face and side-only hair set him apart in a big group. Begin with a yellow long-sleeve shirt, overalls, black gloves and black boots. Attach black costume hair only around the sides of a yellow beanie, leaving the top bare. A single silver-rimmed goggle with a clear lens and soft strap goes over one eye, and thick angled brows above it make the scowl. A blue foam megaphone or a rolled list of silly group rules suits his bossy streak. Overall straps slip off narrow shoulders, especially on kids, so I'd cross them at the back or sew a short strip of elastic between them.
26. Dave Minion Costume With Two-Eye Goggles

Dave is the Minion I suggest when someone decides to come along the night before. A yellow crewneck under denim overalls, black gloves and sturdy shoes are the base, and a few neatly parted black strands go on a yellow beanie. Two round silver goggles with clear lenses form his face. Keep yellow face paint off the skin right around the eyes, where goggle rims rub it into a smear. A painted smile, a soft banana or a foam ice cream cone and you're done. Choose separates you'll actually wear again after Halloween.
27. Jerry Minion Costume With Spiky Hair

Jerry's spiky hair is the only thing that sets him apart from the standard Minion uniform, so that's where I spend the effort. A yellow sweatshirt or hoodie goes with denim overalls, black gloves and black lace-up sneakers. Cover your hair with a yellow cap and attach short pieces of black costume hair so they stand upright in an uneven pattern. Stiff craft felt cut into narrow spikes holds its shape better than loose fibre if the night is humid. Two silver goggles with clear lenses, light yellow makeup on the cheeks and forehead, and a foam megaphone finish him.
28. Carl Minion Costume With Siren Hat

Carl is the Minion with the siren, which makes him easy to spot in a crowd. A yellow long-sleeve shirt goes under overalls with black gloves and black boots. Top a yellow beanie with short black hair and a light red foam siren. Leave out flashing lights; in a dark room they bother people and can trigger anyone sensitive to strobing. A single silver goggle with a clear lens, one curved black eyebrow and a surprised painted mouth give his face. A cardboard sign or foam megaphone is the prop, and small red patches on the overall pockets tie the body to the hat.
29. Purple Evil Minion Costume With Overalls

The purple Evil Minion is the wild one, and kids love him because he looks a little unhinged. Wear a purple long-sleeve shirt with black or dark denim overalls, black gloves and chunky black boots with flexible soles. The hair is a purple beanie covered in long, messy purple-and-white costume hair that sticks out everywhere. Big silver goggles with clear or lightly tinted lenses, purple face paint, white around the mouth and thick dark brows set the face. Skip sharp costume teeth and paint a zigzag smile instead. A jar labelled with a made-up formula is the prop, and he's at his funniest standing in a line of yellow Minions.
30. Gru Jr. Baby Costume With Gray Onesie

Gru Jr. is the youngest member of a family lineup, and he's simple to dress. Put the baby in a soft gray or charcoal footed onesie with a black fabric collar or a printed jacket design. Use a light cotton hat in a bald-cap style, never latex or adhesive on a baby's head, and skip makeup entirely. Soft black booties look like tiny shoes and keep feet warm, and a gray-and-black striped bib stands in for Gru's scarf. For photos, set a plush banana or soft Minion beside the baby. I check three things on any baby costume: it breathes, the diaper is reachable, and nothing presses at the neck. Pair him with adult Gru and Lucy for the full family.
Minion Goggles You Can Actually See Through
The goggle is the part of every Minion that fails first. Real swim or ski goggles fog up, and heavy craft versions slide down the nose. This is how I make a pair that lasts a night.
- Cut the rims from thick EVA foam or a section of cardboard tube, sized so the opening sits around your eye rather than on it.
- Paint the rims silver after sealing the foam with a thin coat of glue, so the paint doesn't soak in and look patchy.
- Leave the lens open, or use clear acetate with a few small holes punched near the edge to let steam escape.
- Run a wide black elastic strap around the back and stitch, rather than glue, it to the rims. Hot glue lets go in cold air and the goggle drops into the candy bucket.
On a one-eyed Minion, centre the goggle over one real eye. A single lens set between the eyes looks right in a mirror but blocks both sides of your view.
Yellow Paint or a Yellow Hood?
Full yellow face paint looks great in photos and miserable after two hours. It transfers onto collars, smears under goggle rims and stains white clothes on anyone you hug. For young kids and for schools with no-face-paint rules, I'd use a yellow beanie pulled low, or a yellow hood or balaclava cut open around the face, and leave the skin bare.
If you do paint, patch-test the product on the inner wrist the day before, stick to water-activated face paint made for skin, and press translucent powder over it. Take it off with a gentle cleanser or oil before bed, because yellow pigment hides in the hairline and around the nose until morning.
Give Every Minion a Different Eye and Haircut
The Despicable Me cast is big enough that nobody in a group has to wear the same outfit. Gru, Lucy, Agnes, Kevin and Bob are the easy reads, and Poppy, Maxime, Valentina and Gru Jr. bring in the newer films. The villains add suits, retro dresses and big wigs. Keep the goggles light, the props soft and the shoes walkable. You don't need a packaged set for any of these; the signature colours plus two familiar details usually make the character clear.
