Naruto costumes come down to colour blocking you can sew or alter at home: an orange jacket with blue shoulders, a red tunic with a white circle, a black cloak with red clouds. Get those panels right, add a styled wig, a forehead protector and some simple face marks, and the character reads before anyone sees the details. I build most of these from thrifted hoodies, track trousers and vests with fabric paint or appliqué, and I'd always test the wig, shoes and any mask at home first. Below are solo looks, Akatsuki cloaks and full team groups; if you're dressing with friends, pick characters from the same part of the story so the outfits match.

Sewing a Forehead Protector That Sits Flat
Almost every character here wears the same headband, so it is worth making a good one. I sew the band as a long fabric tube, about 7 to 8 centimetres wide when finished, in blue, black or red depending on the character. A tube is stronger than a single layer and the ties stay neat. Cut the ties long enough to knot at the back with tails that hang down, the way the show draws them.
- Cut the plate from a rectangle of thin EVA foam or stiff craft board with rounded corners. EVA holds its shape better if you plan to wear it all day.
- Paint it with a metallic silver paint, then draw the village symbol in black paint pen. A printed template traced through with a ballpoint leaves a guide groove in foam.
- Seal the paint with a flexible sealer so it doesn't crack where the plate curves around the forehead.
- Glue the plate to the band with contact cement or a flexible fabric glue, and add two small stitches through the band at each end of the plate. Hot glue lets go when it gets cold outdoors.
For the Akatsuki characters, scratch a single line through the symbol with a craft knife after painting. Don't cut too deep, or the foam splits along that line.
1. Classic Naruto Uzumaki Costume

The original orange-and-blue outfit is where most people start. An orange zip-front jacket with deep blue shoulders, matching orange trousers and blue open-toe costume boots or sandals over dark socks build the base. When I convert a plain orange hoodie, I cut the blue shoulder panels from a stretch knit so they move with the jacket instead of puckering. A short spiky blond wig, a blue forehead protector and three neat whisker lines on each cheek in face-safe liner do the identifying. A small black thigh pouch and a soft bandage wrap on one leg finish the ninja shape. Stick to lightweight athletic fabric if you'll be walking around for hours.
2. Naruto Shippuden Costume

The Shippuden version keeps the orange but swaps the shoulders and trim to black, which reads older. A black-and-orange zip jacket, orange trousers, a black hip pouch and black open-toe boots form the outfit. Spike a bright blond wig into short separate points, tie on a black forehead protector and keep the cheek marks fine. I'd add fingerless black gloves; they make the costume look finished and cost very little. A rolled paper mission scroll tied with red cord is a safe prop. It's the look most teens and adults will picture first.
3. Naruto Sage Mode Costume

Sage Mode is the Shippuden outfit plus a sleeveless red cloak that falls to the calves, with a wide black border near the hem. Sewing that border is easiest if you cut it as a separate band and stitch it on, rather than trying to paint a clean straight edge on red fabric. Add black open-toe boots, a spiky blond wig and a dark forehead protector. The orange eye makeup does the rest; I'd paint it as a soft shaded patch around each eye and skip contacts unless an eye professional has fitted them. A big scroll made from foam tubing wrapped in fabric can ride across the back. Keep it hollow and padded so it doesn't knock into people.
4. Seventh Hokage Naruto Costume

Older Naruto needs the long white Hokage cloak, and that is the piece worth sewing well. The flame trim around the hem is red, and I cut it from felt or cotton, then edge-stitch it on, because fabric paint on white tends to bleed at the edges. Give the cloak a high red-lined collar. Under it, an orange zip jacket, tapered black trousers and black shinobi-style boots keep the colours right, with a short blond wig styled in softer spikes than the teenage version. Paint the whisker marks with a fine brush. A rolled village document or a small crossbody pouch suits this calmer, grown-up character better than a weapon, and the cloak keeps you warm outdoors.
5. Classic Sakura Haruno Costume

Sakura's first outfit is a sleeveless red tunic with white trim and white circle details, and it's one of the easiest to make from altered clothes. Start from a red tunic or long tank, add white bias binding at the edges and appliqué the circles in white cotton. Fitted dark shorts, green knee-length leggings, dark blue open-toe boots and a small hip pouch match the early silhouette. A short pink wig with face-framing layers and a red forehead protector worn like a headband finish the head. Soft pink blush and clean black liner keep the face bright. It's light enough for a warm indoor event or a school dress-up day.
6. Sakura Shippuden Costume

Her later outfit is sleeker and still very wearable. A sleeveless red tunic with pale trim, side slits and a short front zip sits over fitted black shorts, with black gloves, dark knee-high boots and a small beige pouch. I'd stay-stitch the side slits before hemming them; on a stretch fabric they tend to grow and gape after a few hours of walking. A chin-length pink wig with a clean side part and curved ends, a red forehead protector as a hairband, rosy blush and a small violet diamond high on the forehead in skin-safe makeup complete her. It pairs naturally with Shippuden Naruto, Kakashi or Sai.
7. Classic Sasuke Uchiha Costume

Classic Sasuke is clean shapes in navy and white. A navy short-sleeve shirt with a tall collar, white fitted shorts, blue open-toe sandals, white arm warmers and a dark thigh pouch make the outfit. The tall collar is the bit people get wrong; I interface it with a firm fusible so it stands up instead of flopping. A short black wig with pointed layers at the back and longer pieces at the cheeks, plus a blue forehead protector, finish the head. The red-and-white fan emblem on the back is the most important detail, so appliqué it rather than painting it, and it'll still look crisp from behind.
8. Sasuke Shippuden Costume

Shippuden Sasuke is all about that oversized purple rope. Start with a loose white kimono-style shirt with elbow-length sleeves that opens slightly at the chest, then add dark fitted trousers, navy shin guards and black open-toe boots. For the rope, I braid three lengths of purple fabric tube stuffed with batting; it's far lighter than real rope and still looks thick. Tie it in a big knot at the back. A black wig with long pointed bangs and spikes behind the crown, pale foundation and sharp brows go on last. Leave the sword at home and carry a folded mission map so you won't run into event weapon rules.
9. Kakashi Hatake Costume

Kakashi is the layered option, which makes him a good pick when the weather is cold. A dark navy long-sleeve shirt and trousers go under an olive-green utility vest, with fingerless gloves, a dark face covering, a thigh pouch and black open-toe boots. Spike a short silver wig tall and uneven, then angle a dark forehead protector over one eye. The mask matters most for comfort: I sew it from a breathable cotton jersey rather than a thick knit, and make sure it doesn't ride up into your line of sight. A washable red eye design under the lifted headband works for photos, and a small orange paperback prop with a made-up cover is a fun extra.
10. Kakashi ANBU Costume

The ANBU version swaps the vest for a fitted black-and-grey uniform. A sleeveless charcoal top, black arm guards, fitted black trousers and sturdy boots form the base, with a pale grey chest plate made from flexible foam so you can still sit down. A silver spiked wig and a dark forehead protector stay the same. The white animal mask with red and black markings is the key detail, but I'd hold it beside your face or wear it on the side of the head in crowds, since any full mask cuts your view sideways. Cool grey shadow, a little red liner around one eye, gloves and a slim waist pouch finish it.
11. Hinata Hyuga Shippuden Costume

Hinata's Shippuden outfit is warm and covered, so it suits a cold night. A lavender hooded jacket with cream sleeves and soft mesh-look trim at the cuffs goes over fitted navy trousers, with a black thigh pouch and low open-toe boots over dark socks. A long straight indigo wig with blunt bangs and side pieces does the identifying, and the long fringe usually needs a trim so it sits just above the lashes. Suggest her pale eyes with smoky lilac shadow instead of contacts. Natural blush, a light pink lip and a forehead protector worn around the neck complete her. She makes a natural couple look alongside Naruto.
12. Neji Hyuga Costume

Neji is neutral colours and long hair. A light beige short-sleeve shirt with a wrapped waist, dark brown knee-length shorts and bandage wraps on one leg and both forearms form the outfit, with navy open-toe boots and a pouch at the lower back. For the wraps, I cut strips of cotton jersey along the stretch so they hug the arm and don't slide down. A long straight dark brown wig with two narrow face-framing pieces and a dark forehead protector finish the head. Soft taupe shadow, straight brows and a little pale lavender around the eyes suggest his look without lenses. Keep accessories to a minimum.
13. Rock Lee Costume

Rock Lee is cheap to make and needs no complicated wig styling. A fitted green jumpsuit, or a green athletic top with matching leggings, plus orange ribbed leg warmers, beige hand wraps and black open-toe sandals make the outfit. A short black bowl-cut wig and very thick straight brows in dark brown face makeup carry the face. I usually trim the bowl cut a little shorter than it comes, because the packaged ones sit too low over the eyes. The red forehead protector goes around the waist like a belt. Stretch athletic fabric makes this one comfortable for posing, dancing or joining a Leaf Village group.
14. Might Guy Costume

Might Guy is Rock Lee's outfit with grown-up extras. Wear a fitted green jumpsuit under an olive utility vest, then add bright orange leg warmers, black open-toe boots and beige athletic tape or fabric wraps on the hands and wrists. A glossy black bowl-cut wig and bold straight eyebrows give the expression. Stitch the red forehead protector band onto an elastic belt so it stays flat at the waist while you walk. Natural foundation, warm blush and a big grin are all the makeup he needs. Pair him with Rock Lee for one of the funniest duos on this list.
15. Gaara Costume

Gaara's layers are deep red, grey and brown. A long burgundy coat or wrap-front tunic, fitted dark trousers, sturdy black shin-high boots, a wide grey belt and a brown crossbody harness made from faux leather or fabric strapping form the outfit. A short tousled red wig with pointed layers at the forehead, black liner around the eyes and a small red symbol above the left brow in skin-safe makeup finish him. The gourd is the big build. Papier-mâché over a balloon is light, and I'd attach it to padded webbing straps so the weight sits across the shoulders rather than pulling at the coat. Make it removable for crowded rooms.
16. Temari Costume

Temari is a dress-based look that still moves well. A short black kimono-style dress with red trim, wide sleeves and a wide waist sash goes over fitted black shorts, with mesh-look arm warmers and low black open-toe boots. The four short ponytails are fiddly on a wig; I section the wig on a head form first and secure each tail with a small elastic and a hidden clip. Defined brows, neutral shadow and soft rose lipstick are enough makeup. Her big folding fan is the prop people expect, so make it from fabric over lightweight foam ribs, with rounded edges, and check that it folds shut for travel.
17. Kankuro Costume

Kankuro is mostly face paint and a hood. A loose black hooded jumpsuit, a wide waist sash, fingerless gloves and black open-toe boots make the base, with small tan or brown panels on the chest and sleeves from fabric paint or iron-on fabric. Wear the hood instead of a wig and keep a bit of room around the face. Paint the symmetrical purple lines across the cheeks, chin and forehead with a reference image beside your mirror, using skin-safe products. I set those lines with powder, because the hood rubs against the cheeks all night. A small wooden artist's mannequin on soft cords makes a harmless puppet prop.
18. Shikamaru Nara Costume

Shikamaru is relaxed enough for a full day of walking. A dark grey shirt and matching fitted trousers under an olive-green vest, black open-toe boots, wrist wraps, a thigh pouch and a dark forehead protector tied around the upper arm make the outfit. The high spiky ponytail is the only tricky part, and a small piece of foam inside the ponytail helps it hold its shape. Keep makeup to defined brows and light contouring. A rolled strategy map, notebook or a flat pouch made to look like a game board makes a fitting prop. If you already own neutral athletic wear and a utility vest, most of the work is done.
19. Ino Yamanaka Costume

Ino brings purple to the ninja theme. A sleeveless violet crop top or fitted tunic with a high collar, a coordinating wrap skirt over black shorts, mesh-look leg panels, black arm warmers and low open-toe boots build the outfit. A long pale blond wig in a high ponytail with one sweeping bang across the forehead is what makes her read. Wrap skirts open when you walk, so I add a hidden snap at the overlap. A dark forehead protector worn as a belt, lavender shadow, defined lashes and rosy lips finish her, and a single oversized fabric flower is a nice prop. She completes a Team 10 group with Shikamaru and Choji.
20. Choji Akimichi Costume

Choji's outfit is comfortable layers with bold marks, and it fits a wide range of bodies. Wear a dark green or olive shirt under a pale grey vest, loose dark trousers and black open-toe boots, with a long white scarf at the neck and a red forehead protector. A spiky brown wig, or your own hair pushed up with temporary colour spray, works. Paint two red swirls on the cheeks in face-safe makeup. I'd draw the swirls on with a cream colour and a small round brush; pencils drag on the skin and look shaky. Fingerless gloves, a waist pouch and a giant snack bag made from printed paper with a made-up label finish him.
21. Tenten Costume

Tenten adapts easily to warm or cool weather. A white wrap-front blouse with burgundy trim and three-quarter sleeves goes with loose burgundy trousers that taper at the calf, a wide red sash, black fingerless gloves and low black open-toe boots. Two neat round buns are the identifier; I build them on the wig with a small sock bun inside each so they keep their shape. Leave short pieces around the face. Wear the forehead protector across the brow or at the waist. A light rolled fabric scroll across the back is a safe prop, as long as the strap is wide enough not to dig into your shoulders.
22. Jiraiya Costume

Jiraiya is a big, theatrical character. A dark green tunic and trousers sit under a sleeveless red coat that reaches below the knee. Wooden-look platform sandals are only worth it if they're stable; flat brown sandals with white leg wraps are safer. The long spiky white wig is heavy, so I'd pin it to a wig cap in several places. Add the red headpiece with small horn shapes from flexible foam, two vertical red lines under each eye and light grey brows. Red wrist guards and a broad sash finish him, and a rolled paper manuscript or small notebook makes a safe prop.
23. Tsunade Costume

Tsunade is simple separates with a bit of authority. A grey wrap-front blouse, cropped navy trousers and a wide dark sash go under a long green robe, with comfortable black open-toe sandals. A long blond wig with a centre part tied into two low ponytails, warm neutral makeup, defined lashes, pink lipstick and a small violet diamond high on the forehead complete her. Wrap blouses tend to slip open, so I add fashion tape or a camisole for a covered version at public events. A rolled document or green folder is the prop. She works alone, in a Sannin trio or with other Leaf leaders.
24. Orochimaru Costume

Orochimaru can look eerie without anything frightening. A cream tunic with long flared sleeves over black fitted trousers and a high-neck black underlayer, plus dark shin guards and flat black open-toe boots, make the outfit. The thick purple rope at the waist is tied in a big decorative knot at the back, made the same way as Sasuke's from stuffed fabric tubes. A long straight black wig with a centre part, pale foundation, purple shadow, sharp brows and muted plum lipstick give the cool expression, and a little pale yellow around the eyes adds contrast without contacts. A small rolled scroll is enough of a prop.
25. Itachi Uchiha Akatsuki Costume

Itachi is one of the simpler Akatsuki builds, because the cloak does nearly all of it. A long black cloak with red clouds and red lining goes over dark trousers and a light black shirt, with open-toe boots and a forehead protector with a scratch through the symbol. A long black wig with a centre part and a low ponytail, soft grey shadow under the eyes and clean black liner complete the face, and subtle red around the irises is optional. I'd add a simple ring and dark nail colour for close-up photos. Skip the weapon and pose with one hand in a basic hand sign.
26. Pain Akatsuki Costume

Pain needs the same cloak with very distinctive hair and face details. An ankle-length black cloak with red cloud appliqués goes over dark fitted trousers and black open-toe boots. A short bright orange wig styled into firm upright spikes takes some product; I use a strong-hold spray and a hair dryer on the cool setting so the fibre doesn't frizz. Make the facial piercings with black cosmetic dots, flat adhesive gems or painted foam pieces, never real jewellery. Lavender eye makeup with narrow circular lines suggests his eyes safely. Hem the cloak so it clears the floor, and let a serious pose stand in for a prop.
27. Konan Akatsuki Costume

Konan softens the Akatsuki look. Wear the long black cloud cloak over fitted dark trousers and low black open-toe boots, with a straight blue-violet wig cut to chin length and a heavy side part. The pale paper flower above one ear is her signature, and I make it from card stock or craft foam on a light clip so it doesn't drag the wig sideways. Lavender shadow, clean liner, cool pink lipstick and softly shaped brows finish her face. Folded paper butterflies on a clear ribbon or wrist loop make a lovely prop that won't get lost. She pairs naturally with Pain for a duo.
28. Deidara Akatsuki Costume

Deidara is about the sweeping blond hair. Wear the black Akatsuki cloak with red clouds over dark fitted trousers and black open-toe boots, with a forehead protector scratched through. A long golden wig with a high half-ponytail and a thick bang over one eye does the identifying, though a bang that covers an eye also blocks half your view, so plan to sweep it aside when walking. Dark liner and blue-grey shadow on the visible eye, gloves with small painted eye shapes on the palms and a tiny white bird made from lightweight modelling foam finish him. Shorten the cloak sleeves if you'll be eating or holding a phone.
29. Tobi Akatsuki Costume

Tobi is the easiest Akatsuki look, because the orange spiral mask does the identifying. A long black cloak with red clouds over dark trousers, flat black open-toe boots, short black gloves and a simple ring make the outfit, with a short spiky black wig for when the mask comes off. Make the mask from lightweight foam or plastic with wide eye holes, smooth edges and some padding inside. Even then, I wouldn't wear a full face mask while walking through a crowd; push it up onto the head between photos. Neutral makeup underneath and a little red around one eye finish it.
30. Team 7 Naruto Group Costume

Team 7 brings Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura and Kakashi together, and the four colour palettes make it the easiest group to recognise. Naruto wears orange and blue with a spiky blond wig and cheek marks; Sasuke a navy high-collar shirt, white shorts and pointed black hair; Sakura a red tunic, green leggings and a short pink wig; Kakashi navy layers, an olive vest, silver spikes and a breathable face covering. When I make a set like this, I cut all four forehead protector plates from the same template so they match exactly. Use matching open-toe footwear, fabric pouches and paper scrolls instead of weapons, and keep everyone in the early-series era.
An Akatsuki Cloak From a Plain Black Coat Pattern
Five of these costumes share the cloak, so groups often make them together. A simple long coat or robe pattern with a high stand-up collar is all you need; the cloak hangs straight and loose, so fit is forgiving. I use a matte black fabric with some weight, such as a cotton twill or a heavy poly crepe. Shiny satin looks cheap in photos and shows every crease.
The clouds are the slow part. Cut them from red cotton or felt, outline them with white, and appliqué them with a tight zigzag. Fusible web behind each cloud keeps it from shifting while you stitch. Painted clouds are faster, but paint on black fabric needs several coats and stiffens the cloth. Line the collar in red so it shows when the collar is open. Hem the cloak so it clears the floor by a few centimetres, since a cloak that drags gets stepped on in every queue.
Spiky Wigs That Hold Their Points
Naruto, Kakashi, Pain and Sasuke all need spikes that stay up. Buy a wig with plenty of fibre and some length, since a thin wig can't be shaped into points. I put the wig on a head form, pull out small sections, backcomb near the base, and twist each one into a point with a strong-hold spray or a little craft glue on the very tips for spikes that need to be stiff.
Keep heat low. Most cheap synthetic fibre melts or frizzes under a hot dryer, so use a cool setting. Store a finished wig on the head form under a light bag so the spikes don't get crushed. With care, it'll last for several events.
Colour Blocking Wins Before Any Prop
Every Naruto character on this list starts with the right colours in the right places. Sort the palette and silhouette first, then add the wig, face marks, forehead protector, shoes and one light accessory. Thrifted athletic wear, altered hoodies, cotton appliqué, craft foam and temporary face paint keep most of these affordable. For a couple or group, agree on the story era and share details like matching protectors before the day. Then try on every mask, cloak, shoe and wig at home. A costume you can move and see in comfortably looks more confident in person and in photos.
