Most families tell me the clothes are the hardest part of booking a summer session. Everyone has to look like they belong together without looking stiff, and the outfits have to survive heat, sand and small children who would rather run than pose. As a photo shoot stylist, my job is to make that decision smaller. Summer light and green or sandy backdrops do a lot of the work once the palette is settled and the fabrics breathe. Below are 30 complete family looks, from beach neutrals and soft pastels to earthy park colors and crisp coastal blues, and for each one I've added what I'd check before the shoot.

Laying Every Outfit on the Bed Before Shoot Day
The most useful thing I ask a family to do happens a week before the session. Put every outfit, shoes included, side by side on a bed or the floor and take a phone photo from above. Problems that are invisible in separate closets show up right away.
- Start with one anchor outfit, usually Mom's dress or the one printed piece, and take three or four colors from it.
- Give each person one of those colors, then fill in with neutrals.
- Look at the photo in black and white. If every outfit turns the same gray, the group will look flat, so swap one piece for something lighter or darker.
- Check for anything that pulls the eye: a logo, a neon shoelace, a bright hair tie or a sparkly sneaker.
- Have the kids move in their clothes for a few minutes. Anything they tug at will get tugged at all session.
Adjust before the day, not at the location. Shops and wardrobes are easier to fix than a sunset that only lasts so long.
1. White Tops And Denim Bottoms For A Timeless Summer Family Photo

White tops with light denim is the formula I suggest when a family can't agree on anything else. In this version, Mom tucks an eyelet blouse into ankle jeans with nude sandals, Dad wears a white linen button-down with straight-leg jeans, and the kids follow in crisp white tops, a white sundress with a denim jacket, rolled denim shorts and soft denim overalls for the baby. Keep the washes close rather than identical; three slightly different light blues look natural, while one exact wash on five people looks like a uniform. White also bounces light up into faces, which is why I schedule this look for golden hour rather than noon, when bright white loses its detail.
2. Neutral Linen Outfits For Summer Family Photos

Linen is my first suggestion for a hot outdoor session, because it breathes and photographs with a soft, matte texture. Here Mom wears an oatmeal linen maxi with a side slit, flat tan sandals and a straw hat, Dad a rolled-sleeve beige linen shirt with off-white chinos, and the children a cream muslin dress and a sand linen short set. Under dappled tree light on a picnic blanket, the neutrals let the green frame everyone. Linen creases the moment you sit in a car, so I ask families to travel in other clothes and change on location, or at least steam the pieces and hang them in the back seat.
3. Blush And Ivory Family Picture Outfits

Blush and ivory give a garden-party feel, and the risk is looking dressed for a wedding. Mom's flowing blush midi with a flutter sleeve, ivory heeled sandals and fine gold jewelry, Dad's ivory polo with light tan chinos and brown loafers, and the girls in a blush lace dress and an ivory eyelet one with ballet flats keep it relaxed. The way to avoid the bridal look is to keep ivory on the smaller pieces and put the color on the adults. Blush warms skin in late-afternoon light, which is when this palette looks its best against flowering shrubs.
4. Light Blue And White Beach Family Photo Outfits

Light blue and white mirror sea and sky without disappearing into them, which is exactly what you want on a shoreline at sunset. Mom wears a sky-blue eyelet midi with a wrap shape, Dad a white linen shirt over light khaki shorts, and the kids run ahead in white cotton sundresses and pale chambray shorts. Going barefoot family style works on sand, but I warn parents that wet hems darken and cling, so roll trousers and keep dress hems above the ankle if anyone will be in the water. Bring a towel for sandy feet before the car.
5. Earth Tone Family Outfits For Outdoor Photos

Earth tones give a family photo warmth without a single bright color. Mom's rust midi with a tie waist and brown leather sandals, Dad's olive henley with khaki shorts and a canvas belt, a cream crewneck and tan cargo shorts on the son and a mustard linen dress on the daughter all sit comfortably against a wooden fence or golden field. One thing I check with this palette: olive and khaki can blend into dry summer grass, so I make sure at least one person near the center of the group wears the strongest color, here the rust, to hold the frame together.
6. Sage Green Family Photo Color Scheme

A single-color family can look refined when the shade is soft and the textures differ, and sage green does both. Mom chooses a sage wrap dress in cotton gauze with nude espadrille wedges, Dad a muted olive polo with light gray chinos and brown sandals, and the little ones sage rompers, a seersucker short set and tiny ivory sneakers. The gauze against the seersucker is what keeps it from reading flat. Sage can look washed out against pale skin in harsh light, so I shoot it in open shade or late in the day, with tall grass or park trees behind.
7. Bohemian Maxi Dress Family Photo Outfits

A boho family look should feel like a free summer afternoon, full of texture and movement. Mom's off-white maxi has billowy sleeves, lace insets and a tiered skirt, with a wide-brim felt hat and beaded necklaces. Dad wears an unbuttoned linen shirt over a white tee with relaxed chinos and leather sandals, and the kids carry the boho spirit in embroidered cotton dresses and gauze shorts. In a wildflower field at golden hour, the tiers catch the breeze. A hat brim shades the eyes, though, so I ask Mom to tip it back or take it off for the close family frames.
8. Navy And White Coastal Family Picture Outfits

Navy and white suit a lighthouse, a boardwalk or an old dock, and the contrast holds up against bright summer sky. Mom wears a navy and white striped midi with a defined waist and tan wedges, Dad a solid navy polo with white shorts and boat shoes, the daughter a white sundress with navy ric-rac trim and the son navy chino shorts with a white short-sleeve shirt. I prefer a wide stripe like Mom's to a narrow one, since very fine stripes can shimmer on a camera sensor. A woven tote and a sun hat keep it coastal without turning nautical.
9. Cream And Beige Neutral Family Photo Looks

The quietest palette often gives the softest portraits. Cream, beige and warm ivory in layers: Mom in a cream knit tank tucked into a flowing beige maxi skirt with a front slit and barely-there sandals, Dad in a beige henley with cream chinos, and the children in a lightly embroidered cream dress, a beige linen romper and bare feet for the baby. Tonal neutrals reflect light onto faces like a big soft reflector. Very light colors close to skin tone can make a fair-skinned family blend into their clothes, so I add one slightly deeper beige or tan piece to give the eye an edge.
10. Pastel Color Family Outfits For Park Photos

Families who love color often worry about looking like a box of crayons, and a soft pastel set fixes that. Mom wears a lavender midi with a smocked bodice and flat sandals, Dad a pale peach button-up with stone chinos, the daughter a mint gingham dress and the son a powder-blue polo with khaki shorts. Pastels read as coordinated rather than matching when the shoes and accessories stay neutral. Against summer park green, the palette is cheerful without shouting. I keep pastel sessions out of midday sun, which bleaches light colors to near white.
11. Gingham Dress Family Photo Outfits For Summer

Gingham brings a picnic feel, and it needs rules once more than one person wears it. Mom's black-and-white gingham midi has a square neck, with tan sandals and a straw tote; Dad keeps to a solid white tee, khaki shorts and canvas sneakers; the twin girls wear red gingham sundresses with white bows, and the baby brother has cream overalls over a red gingham bubble. Keep everything else solid and neutral, and use different check sizes, larger on the adults and smaller on the children, so the patterns don't merge. With a checkered blanket on the grass, it feels nostalgic without becoming costume.
12. All White Family Beach Photo Outfits

An all-white family on a beach at sunset seems to glow, and it's one of the most requested looks I style. Mom wears a white tiered maxi with spaghetti straps and gold jewelry, Dad a white short-sleeve button-up with rolled linen trousers, and the kids white eyelet dresses and a white polo with white shorts. Varied textures, eyelet against linen against crochet, stop the group from flattening into one white shape. Timing is everything here. White blows out in midday sun, so I book this palette for the last hour before sunset, when the warm light gives it tone.
13. Terracotta And Clay Color Family Outfits

Terracotta brings a sun-baked warmth that suits desert landscapes, adobe walls and golden fields at sunset. Mom wears a terracotta slip dress with strappy brown sandals and gold hoops, Dad a clay linen button-up with dark brown chinos and a woven belt, the daughter a dusty rose smocked dress and the son a rust tee with cream shorts. Silky slip dresses show every sweat mark and wrinkle in heat, so I'd choose a matte viscose or crepe version for a summer evening. Shared warm tones across the family make the group read as one in wide shots.
14. Denim Dress And Western Family Picture Outfits

Soft denim and a few western details bring personality without a theme. Mom's button-front denim midi with a tie waist goes with tan suede ankle boots, Dad wears a pearl-snap chambray shirt with dark jeans and brown leather boots, the daughter a white cotton dress with cowboy boots, and the son a denim jacket over a plain tee with khaki shorts. A felt hat on Mom and a woven hat on Dad finish it against a split-rail fence. Boots and denim are warm in July, so I suggest this one for evenings or the first cooler weeks of late summer.
15. Coral And Aqua Beach Family Photo Outfits

Coral and aqua sit opposite each other on the color wheel, so they look lively against blue water and white sand. Mom wears a coral wrap dress with flutter sleeves and gold flat sandals, Dad a white linen shirt with aqua shorts, the daughter a coral-and-white striped dress and the son an aqua polo with white shorts. Bright coral can push red into flushed summer cheeks, so I keep it on the person with the most even skin tone in the family and put the white closest to the faces of anyone sunburned. A shell necklace and bare feet are all the extras it needs.
16. Mint Green And Powder Blue Family Outfits

Mint and powder blue give a cool, almost watercolor look in green summer settings. Mom wears a relaxed powder-blue linen dress with tan slides and a fine pendant, Dad a mint button-up with gray chino shorts and casual loafers, the little girl a powder-blue smocked top with white shorts and the boy a mint striped tee with chambray shorts. Cool pastels stand out gently against warm greenery without harsh contrast. On families with very warm, golden skin they can look a little cold, so I add a cream or sand piece to warm up the group.
17. Ivory Lace And Crochet Family Photo Looks

This look leans on texture, built entirely in ivory. Mom wears a fully lined ivory crochet maxi with nude heeled sandals and pearl drops, Dad a smooth ivory linen button-up with cream chinos and tan loafers, the daughter an ivory lace dress with a satin bow, and the son an ivory cable-knit tee with beige shorts. The lining on Mom's dress is not optional; unlined crochet in bright light shows straight through. Each surface catches light differently, crochet, lace, linen and knit, which gives a one-color palette some depth in a garden or against an old stone wall.
18. Olive Green And Tan Earthy Family Outfits

Olive and tan feel at home among trees and tall grass. Mom chooses an olive midi shirt dress with a self-belt, tan sandals and wooden bead earrings, Dad a tan henley with olive cargo shorts and brown leather flip-flops, the daughter an olive-and-cream floral dress and the son a tan crewneck with olive jogger shorts. This palette holds up in brighter midday light better than pastels do, which gives you more flexibility with session timing. I'd swap Dad's flip-flops for leather sandals in full-length shots, since flip-flops tend to look like an afterthought in a family portrait.
19. Floral Dress With Solid Neutrals Family Outfits

The simplest way to bring a print into family photos is to give it to one person and build everyone else from its colors. Mom wears a blush-and-ivory floral midi with a V-neck and barely-there heels, Dad pulls the ivory into a linen shirt with beige chinos, and each child wears one solid from the print, blush for one and sage for the other, in cotton dresses or short sets. I usually give the print to the person who will stand in the middle of most frames, so the pattern anchors the group instead of sitting off to one side.
20. Khaki And White Casual Family Photo Outfits

Khaki and white is the relaxed summer formula I reach for when a family wants to be comfortable above all, and it suits backyard sessions and park walks. Mom tucks a white tank bodysuit into high-waisted khaki wide-leg pants with tan slides, Dad wears a white crewneck with khaki shorts and white canvas sneakers, the daughter a white sundress with a khaki utility vest and the son a white polo with khaki chino shorts. Nothing here needs fussing, so piggyback rides and messy toddler hair can take over the session. Choose crew and polo necklines that hold their shape, as stretched-out tee collars show in close-ups.
21. Chambray Shirt And White Jeans Family Outfit

Chambray and white denim make a fresh look for almost any age. Mom knots a chambray button-up over white skinny jeans with tan wedges, Dad wears a light chambray shirt with rolled sleeves and white chino shorts, the teenage daughter a white eyelet top with a chambray skort and white sneakers, and the son a white tee under an open chambray shirt with dark denim shorts. White bottoms show grass stains and damp sand the moment someone sits, so bring a blanket if the plan involves sitting on the ground. The palette fits a beach, a city alley or a grassy hill at sunset.
22. Ruffled Sundress Family Photo Outfits For Girls

Daughters who love twirling should get to wear ruffles, as long as the rest of the family stays calmer. Mom wears a warm peach off-the-shoulder ruffled midi with espadrille wedges and gold bracelets, the girls tiered ruffle dresses in soft coral and butter yellow with simple sandals, and Dad and their brother balance it all in crisp white button-ups and tailored khaki shorts. Let the movement stay with the girls while the boys wear clean solids that support the palette. In a meadow at golden hour, a spinning ruffled skirt is the frame most parents end up printing.
23. Blush Pink And Gray Family Picture Outfits

Blush and soft gray pair warmth with calm, and they suit a city session better than a field. Mom wears a blush slip dress with a gray linen blazer over the shoulders, nude heels and a gray clutch; Dad a light gray sweater over a white collared shirt with charcoal chinos; the daughter a blush tulle skirt with a gray graphic tee knotted at the waist; and the son gray shorts with a blush-striped polo. Concrete and stone pick up the gray, so the blush stands out. A sweater in summer is warm, so I let Dad wear it only for the posed frames and roll his sleeves in between.
24. Seersucker Shorts And Linen Family Beach Outfits

Seersucker is a puckered cotton that holds texture and creases less than plain linen, which is why it suits a humid beach session. Mom tucks a white linen tank into high-waisted seersucker shorts with a straw visor and flat sandals, Dad wears a seersucker short-sleeve shirt with navy swim trunks as shorts, the son a blue-stripe seersucker short set and the daughter a white cotton dress with a seersucker hair bow. The texture adds interest without a busy print. Bare feet and sandy toes suit it, though I'd swap the visor for a hat or nothing in close-ups, since visors cast a hard line across the forehead.
25. Coordinating Sibling Outfits With Parent Neutrals

For larger families, I often let the children carry the color while the adults stay neutral. Mom wears a cream sweater tank with oatmeal linen trousers and leather sandals, Dad a beige henley and khaki shorts, and the siblings share dusty blue and soft coral: a dusty blue smocked dress, a coral romper and a blue-and-cream striped onesie. The parents' neutrals frame the kids, whose colors give the picture life without pulling the focus. It also takes the pressure off parents who don't want to wear color themselves.
26. Light Blue Button-Up And Cream Chinos Family Look

Light blue and cream look preppy and polished for an evening session near white fences, docks or wide lawns. Mom ties a light blue button-up at the waist over cream wide-leg trousers with brown sandals, Dad wears a matching blue shirt with rolled sleeves, cream chinos and a braided belt, the son a blue-and-white gingham shirt with cream shorts and the daughter a light blue linen dress with cream sandals. Two adults in the same shirt can look like a team uniform, so I change the shapes: Mom's is knotted and Dad's is tucked, which keeps them individual while the color story stays strong.
27. Midi Skirt And Blouse Family Photo Outfits

Midi skirts and soft blouses lift a family portrait a step toward dressy without looking stiff. Mom tucks a silky sage camisole into an ivory pleated midi skirt with strappy nude heels and layered gold necklaces, Dad wears a sage polo with beige chinos and brown loafers, the daughter a sage cotton midi skirt with a white eyelet blouse and the son a tucked white button-up with olive shorts. Pleats crush flat once you sit in the car, so hang the skirt and give it a quick steam on arrival. It suits gardens and estate grounds, while still letting the kids move and play.
28. Crochet And Warm Sand Tone Beach Family Outfits

This beach look layers crochet over a warm sand base. Mom wears a cream crochet cover-up dress over a simple swimsuit with gold anklets and bare feet, Dad sand linen shorts and a woven straw hat with no shirt, the daughter a sand crochet tank dress and the son a cream rash guard with tan swim shorts. Crochet throws small shadow patterns in low sun, adding depth without busyness. Before a beach session I check every swimsuit strap and rash guard seam in the mirror, because a twisted strap shows in every frame. Shoot in the soft light just before sunset for the warmest skin tones.
29. Tropical Print Family Vacation Photo Outfits

A tropical vacation shoot should feel like the place without letting the prints take over. Mom wears a palm-print wrap dress in muted greens and whites with wooden bead earrings and tan slides, Dad a subtle botanical shirt in the same green family with cream shorts, the daughter a green palm smocked dress and the son a solid cream tee with green tropical swim shorts. Prints across several people work when they share a color family and vary in scale, with at least one person in a solid to rest the eye. Pack these pieces rolled in your carry-on so they arrive ready for the first evening.
30. Soft Yellow And Lavender Pastel Family Outfits

Soft yellow and lavender are bright without being sugary, and they suit young children whose personalities fill a frame. Mom wears a butter-yellow midi with puffed sleeves and nude sandals, Dad a lavender gingham button-up with gray shorts, the daughter a lavender tutu dress with a yellow sash and the son a yellow tee with lavender shorts. Pale yellow can drain cool, pink-toned skin, so I put it on whoever it suits best and give the others the lavender. In a green park or against a plain white wall, the pair photographs clean and light.
What the Camera Does to Neon, Logos and Tiny Stripes
Some clothes look fine in person and fight the camera. Neon and very saturated brights throw colored light onto skin, so a lime shirt can leave a green tinge on a child's chin. Small logos and words on tees draw the eye straight away and date the photo. Very fine stripes, tight checks and small herringbone can create a shimmering pattern on a digital sensor. And large areas of pure black at the beach in strong sun lose all their detail. None of these are forbidden, but I keep them off the people at the center of the frame.
Getting Kids to the Shoot Clean and Cool
In summer, how the family arrives matters as much as what they wear. I ask parents to travel in everyday clothes and change at the location, or at least keep the photo outfits on hangers in the car with the air on.
- Pack clear water and plain snacks; red juice and chocolate always find the white shirt.
- Apply sunscreen at home so it has time to sink in, and choose one that doesn't leave a white cast on faces.
- Bring baby wipes, a lint roller, a spare top for the youngest and a towel for sandy feet.
- Book golden hour, roughly the last hour before sunset, for softer light and a cooler temperature.
Three or Four Colors, Then Let the Family Be Themselves
Dressing a family for summer photos doesn't have to turn into a stressful group chat. Every look above follows the same pattern: three or four colors, a mix of textures, fabrics that breathe in heat, and room for each person to look like themselves. Start with the outfit you love most, usually the one with the print or the strongest color, and build everyone else around it. Then lay everything out together before the day, so the only thing left on shoot day is getting there cool and on time. Your photographer will take care of the rest.
