The cereal killer is the pun costume I come back to every year, because the joke does all the work and the materials come out of your recycling bin. Below are ideas for women, men, couples, kids, families and groups, and none of them need fake blood. The pun carries through crushed boxes, big red X marks, "case closed" labels, spoons, bowls and a few detective touches. Most start from clothes you already wear, which keeps the cost low. Two things I always tell people: flatten the boxes before you attach anything, so the outfit stays light, and fix them with removable pins, fabric-safe glue or hook-and-loop dots rather than glue straight onto a good shirt. Props in foam or card are kinder in a crowded room than anything hard. From a plain tee to a sequin dress or a set of pyjamas, there's a version here for most parties.

Turning Empty Boxes Into Costume Panels
Every idea on this list depends on cereal boxes behaving on fabric. A box straight from the recycling is bulky, has sharp corners and tears around pins. A few minutes of prep fixes all of that.
- Empty the box, shake out the crumbs and open the glued seams so it lies flat. Fold it back along the original creases at a slight angle to make it look crushed rather than new.
- Trim it down. Most boxes look better on a body cut to the front panel alone, with the sides and flaps removed, as the extra card just sticks out.
- Round every corner with scissors or a nail file. Square corners catch on sleeves, jackets and other people.
- Put a strip of clear packing tape or duct tape on the back wherever you'll pin. Card tears around a bare pin hole by the end of the evening; tape spreads the pull.
- Add the red X with a thick marker, paint or red electrical tape. Tape gives the cleanest lines, and you can peel it off and reuse the box.
- Decide how it attaches before you decorate: hook-and-loop dots for smooth cotton, safety pins through taped tabs for sweatshirts, a sash or vest for anything delicate.
I'd keep the total to five or six boxes on an adult and three or four on a child. More than that and the costume gets stiff when you sit, and the joke doesn't get any funnier.
1. Classic Cereal Killer Costume With White T-Shirt

This is the original, and I still think it's the clearest version. A plain white tee and comfortable black jeans let the coloured packaging pop. Flatten several empty mini boxes, mark each with a large red X, and fix them to the front and back with hook-and-loop dots. A bold "Cereal Killer" label across the chest spells out the joke for anyone slow to get it. Messy natural hair or a tousled wig is enough styling, and gray eyeshadow with a red lip covers the makeup without anything gory. Carry a light bowl of foam cereal pieces and an oversized card spoon. Black sneakers keep you comfortable for a party or a night of trick-or-treating. Mini boxes are worth the hunt, as full-size ones stick out too far from the body.
2. Easy Cereal Killer Costume With Black Sweatshirt

On a cold night I'd rather build the joke on a sweatshirt than shiver in a tee. Choose a black crewneck, matching leggings or joggers, and clean white sneakers. Pin flattened box fronts on with safety pins, but push each pin through a tab of duct tape stuck to the back of the card first; bare card tears around a pin within an hour. Draw "out of order" signs, X marks and cracked bowls on the packaging. A red fabric headband and softly teased hair bring colour up to the face. Keep makeup to black liner, rosy cheeks and a few tiny cereal-shaped stickers. A ribbon-trimmed reusable spoon and a small crossbody bag made to look like a carton finish it, and the whole thing copes with an outdoor event or a school party.
3. Last-Minute Cereal Killer Costume With Cardboard Sign

An hour before the party is enough for this one, and everything comes from the house. A solid tee, blue jeans and everyday sneakers are the base. Write "Cereal Killer" in thick letters on a light piece of card and doodle bowls, spoons, red X marks and loose cereal around it. Hang the sign from wide ribbon so it sits comfortably on the shoulders; narrow string cuts into your neck by the second hour. Tape two or three flattened box panels below it for some depth. Leave your hair natural or pull it into a high ponytail, and add quick liner and a red lip if you like. Carry an empty bowl of coloured pom-poms. No sewing, no tricky makeup, and it still gets the laugh.
4. No-Sew Cereal Killer Costume With Mini Boxes

No needle needed here, and the base clothes come out unharmed. Begin with a gray long-sleeve shirt, black cargo pants and lace-up boots. Put adhesive hook-and-loop strips on the back of each flattened mini box and the matching half on the shirt. Stick-on strips grip a smooth cotton knit well but let go on fluffy fleece, so choose your shirt with that in mind. Give every box its own label: "crunched," "flattened" or "case closed." A foam bowl glued to a wide headband adds a silly top note. Style hair in a low ponytail or wear a short messy wig. Smudged gray shadow and strong brows give a slightly shady look without tipping into scary. A card evidence folder of box-panel clues finishes it, and the shirt goes back in the drawer the next day.
5. Cute Cereal Killer Costume With Tulle Skirt

Bright, sweet pieces make the dark pun land as a joke. Tuck a fitted white top into a rainbow tulle skirt, then fix small box cutouts around the waistband like panels. Tulle is too fine to hold anything, so I attach the cutouts to the elastic waistband, never the net itself. Mark each with a glittery red X and a tiny "case closed" tag. White tights and colourful high-tops keep you walking comfortably. Two buns with cereal-coloured ribbon woven through them suit the mood. Pastel eye makeup, rosy blush and star stickers at the cheekbones keep the face soft. A bowl-shaped purse of foam cereal and a big plastic spoon with bows are the props. It's the version I'd pick for a friendly party where gore would feel wrong.
6. Glam Cereal Killer Costume With Sequin Dress

A sequin dress gives the breakfast joke an unexpected party upgrade. Choose a comfortable knee-length shape in silver or black. Sequins snag on card edges and pins, so put every box on a removable sash instead of the dress. Add rhinestone X marks, glitter lettering and a sparkly "Cereal Killer" badge to the sash. Sheer black tights and metallic ankle boots carry the shine down to your feet. Glossy waves or a sleek shoulder-length wig suit it, with silver shadow, winged liner and a deep red lip for glam makeup. A glittery bowl-shaped clutch with a spoon charm is the last touch. It catches the light at a party and stays funny, tasteful and easy to read in group photos.
7. Cereal Killer Costume With Black Dress

A black dress you already own is a quick base that still looks put together. A fit-and-flare or T-shirt dress gives enough surface for light decorations without restricting you. Pin flattened box fronts to a wide red sash worn across the body; a sash means the dress itself never gets a pinhole. Add white labels with lines like "breakfast mystery" and "final crunch." Black ankle boots and socks printed with small bowls keep the joke going lower down. A smooth ponytail or blunt black wig suits the clean palette, with matte base, sharp liner and red lipstick. Card cereal-box earrings and a small foam bowl on a wrist strap finish it. I'd wear this one to an indoor party, an evening event or an office do.
8. Cereal Killer Costume With White Dress

White plays the milk here, and every coloured box pops against it. Pick a casual cotton or jersey dress sturdy enough to take a few light decorations. Fix flattened cartons around the skirt with red X marks and comic-style "CRUNCH" labels. On a jersey skirt, keep the boxes small and spaced out, or their weight drags the hem uneven. White tights and red sneakers or low boots finish the legs. Soft curls, a high ponytail or a red wig all suit it. A touch of white shimmer at the inner corners, rosy blush and a glossy red lip keep the face fresh. A clean milk-carton handbag and a foam spoon complete the pairing. Light backgrounds read best in photos, and this one is very clear on camera.
9. Cereal Killer Costume With Denim Overalls

Overalls are what I reach for when someone will be on their feet all evening. Layer them over a red-and-white striped shirt and fix flattened boxes to the bib, pockets and legs with removable fabric tape. Keep boxes off the knees; anything stiff there creases the first time you sit. Decorate each with bold X marks, googly eyes and captions like "totally toasted," plus a handmade "Cereal Killer" patch on the front pocket. Red canvas sneakers and striped socks carry the colour down. Braids, pigtails or a tousled short wig fit the cheerful look, with freckles, rosy cheeks and red liner. A small bowl-shaped bucket holds treats. Denim takes knocks, so this is a sturdy pick for festivals, school events and long walks.
10. Cereal Killer Costume With Red Jumpsuit

A red utility jumpsuit gives you a whole costume in one piece. Choose a relaxed fit and add black-and-white "cereal investigation" patches above the pockets. Fix a few flattened boxes down one leg and across the torso, each labelled "crushed," "missing" or "case closed." Keeping them to one side looks deliberate; scattering them everywhere looks like an accident. Black combat-style boots are sturdy, and a black belt can hold card spoons and a tiny bowl. A high ponytail or sleek dark bob wig suits it, with graphic black liner, neutral cheeks and a deep red lip. A clipboard of breakfast case notes is the prop. There's no tricky construction, and nothing about it is uncomfortable to wear.
11. Cereal Killer Detective Costume

Dressing as the detective on the case flips the pun into a breakfast whodunit. Wear a tan trench coat over a black shirt and tailored trousers, and clip flattened box clues to the coat with removable clips. Bulldog clips grip card well but leave dents in a good coat, so I put a scrap of felt under each jaw. Circle suspicious details on the packaging in red marker and add numbered evidence tags. Brown loafers, a fedora and a light magnifying glass finish the character. Tuck hair under the hat or wear a short wavy wig. Light contour, defined brows and a neutral lip give a focused look. A case folder marked "Cereal Killer" and a clear bag of foam cereal tell the story without anything frightening.
12. Cereal Killer Prisoner Costume

Here the killer has been caught at breakfast. Wear a black-and-white striped shirt with matching trousers or black jeans and comfortable slip-ons. Make a large paper ID card reading "Cereal Killer" with a silly breakfast number, and laminate it with clear packing tape so it survives spilled drinks. Fix two flattened box panels to the shirt, both marked with red X symbols and "case closed" stamps. A messy bun or tousled wig suits the look, with light gray shadow, bold brows and a small cereal sticker by one cheek. Carry a card bowl wrapped in paper chain links. Skip real or realistic restraints; they're heavy and not funny in a crowd. It takes an evening to put together and the joke is obvious.
13. Cereal Killer Chef Costume

A chef is a natural fit for a food pun. Start with a white chef-style jacket, black trousers and slip-resistant black shoes. Put the cereal box fronts on a washable apron, not the jacket, with red X marks and labels reading "removed from the menu." The apron takes all the tape and glue, and the jacket stays clean. A tall chef hat dotted with foam cereal and a small "Cereal Killer" badge adds height. Keep hair tucked under the hat or wear a short, tidy wig. Fresh makeup with rosy cheeks, defined lashes and a bright lip suits it. Carry a light mixing bowl and an oversized foam spoon as your tools. It's funny without being scary, and you can take the whole joke off in one tie.
14. Cereal Killer Diner Waitress Costume

A retro diner counter is a good setting for this joke. Choose a pastel shirt dress, or a collared blouse with a knee-length skirt. Add a white apron with flattened mini packages, handwritten order tickets and red "canceled" stamps. White ankle socks and comfortable saddle-style shoes give it the vintage diner feel. A high curled ponytail, or a short retro wig with a pastel headband, finishes the hair. Winged liner, soft pink blush and a classic red lip suit the era. Carry a round tray with an empty bowl, foam cereal and a card check reading "Cereal Killer Special," and stick the bowl down with a hook-and-loop dot so it doesn't slide off as you walk. A name tag saying "The Crunch Manager" adds one more laugh. It's tidy enough for a workplace Halloween event.
15. Cereal Killer Scientist Costume

Picture a lab set up to crack breakfast cases. Wear a white lab coat over a green shirt, black trousers and clean sneakers. Fix the ingredient panels from the boxes to the coat beside paper labels reading "sample," "tested" and "crunch analysis." Ingredient panels are the least obvious part of the box to use, which is exactly why they work: people lean in to read them. Add safety-style glasses and carry clear plastic tubs of coloured pom-poms as specimens, lids sealed with tape. A practical bun or short silver wig hints at mad scientist, with pale shimmer, green liner and lightly defined brows. A clipboard titled "Cereal Killer Research" finishes it, and it suits a classroom, an office or a science-themed party.
16. Cereal Killer Athlete Costume

A team jersey with "Cereal Killer" across the back gives the pun a sporty twist. Pair it with athletic shorts or joggers, tall striped socks and supportive sneakers. Put the boxes on a light running belt or a removable chest sash so they don't flap when you move; anything fixed to the jersey front bounces with every step. Mark them with red penalty symbols and "eliminated from breakfast" labels. A high ponytail, braids or a sweatband handle the hair. Water-resistant mascara, a touch of blush and cereal stickers under the eyes like eye black suit the theme. A foam trophy topped with a tiny bowl is the prop. If comfort comes first, or you'll be outdoors and moving, this is the one.
17. Cereal Killer Prom Costume

An old formal dress becomes a Halloween joke here without any permanent change. Pick a thrifted midi or full-length gown and wear a detachable sash reading "Most Wanted Cereal Killer," like a beauty-queen title. Fix flattened mini boxes, glitter X marks and paper award ribbons to the sash only, since gown fabric marks easily. Low heels or sparkly flats make walking easier. A formal updo, polished curls or a glam wig suit the pageant idea, with shimmery eyes, rosy cheeks and red lipstick. A bouquet built in a cereal bowl from foam pieces, ribbon and fake flowers is the prop, and a small card crown tops it off. It's formal and silly at once, and that contrast is the fun.
18. Retro Cereal Killer Costume

The 1980s were all neon and noise, and a breakfast pun fits right in. Pair a bright windbreaker with a fitted tee, leggings and chunky white sneakers. Fix flattened boxes to a wide neon belt and decorate them with zigzags, geometric shapes and big red X marks, plus a fabric patch reading "Cereal Killer Since Breakfast." A high side ponytail with a scrunchie or a big curly wig nails the era. Blue eyeshadow, pink blush and a glossy lip give a period look without going full stage makeup. A card boombox painted with bowls, and no brand logos, is the prop. Neon socks and plastic bangles finish it. Windbreaker fabric is slippery, so I fix boxes to the belt rather than the jacket, where tape won't hold.
19. Rainbow Cereal Killer Costume

This rainbow version shows off the bright side of breakfast. Build it on a white top with a multicoloured skirt or trousers. Arrange small generic box cutouts in colour order along a removable sash, so the stripe of colour reads from across a room. Sparkly red X marks and silver "crunch champion" labels keep the joke front and centre. Rainbow sneakers, or white ones with coloured laces, suit it. Two braids with bright ribbon, or a pastel rainbow wig, handle the hair, with soft rainbow shadow, pink blush and glossy lips. A clear bowl of foam loops and a big silver spoon with streamers make the props. There's no dark imagery at all, and the colours do well in bright, sunny photos.
20. Monochrome Cereal Killer Costume

Black and white with one red accent makes the pun look clean and modern. Wear a white button-down, black trousers and black loafers or ankle boots. Wrap several generic box panels in black-and-white paper before fixing them to a structured vest; wrapping hides the busy packaging and lets the red X marks, spoon outlines and "Cereal Killer" lettering stand out. Slick your hair back or wear a sharp black bob wig. Matte skin, winged liner and a precise red lip keep the face graphic too. A white bowl of black foam cereal and a black-and-white evidence folder finish it. Holding to two colours plus red makes every detail look chosen, which suits minimalists and dressier parties.
21. Neon Cereal Killer Costume

In a dark, busy room, neon is how you get noticed. Pair a neon green top with black cargo pants and bright lace-up sneakers. Fix fluorescent box cutouts to a black utility vest with hot pink X marks and reflective "breakfast suspect" labels. Check before you bring glow sticks, as some venues don't allow them; reflective ribbon is a reusable swap. Space buns with neon extensions, or a vivid short wig, suit the hair. Electric liner, pink blush and small cereal face decals handle the makeup. A clear bowl of fluorescent pom-poms and a foam spoon wrapped in reflective tape make the props. It looks young and lively, and a black vest makes it easy to see who's wearing it.
22. Office Cereal Killer Costume

For the office, I keep the costume off the work clothes entirely. A tailored blazer, a white blouse or shirt, black trousers and comfortable loafers form the base. Fix miniature flattened boxes to a removable lanyard or a wide sash, then stamp them "deadline missed," "breakfast terminated" and "case closed." Neat hair in a bun, ponytail or sharp side part keeps it professional, with natural makeup, defined lashes and a muted red lip. Carry a clipboard of "Cereal Performance Reviews" and a travel mug dressed as a cereal bowl, and wear a name badge reading "Cereal Killer, Breakfast Department." When the party ends, the sash comes off and you're back in your normal work outfit.
23. Pajama Cereal Killer Costume

Pyjamas are about as breakfast as clothing gets. Wear cosy plaid pyjamas, a solid robe and soft slippers with nonslip soles. Fix light box panels to a wide fabric sash over the robe, decorated with sleepy faces, red X marks and labels like "did not survive breakfast." Robes are bulky, so the sash needs to sit high on the chest or it disappears in the folds. A messy topknot, or a sleep mask pushed up like a headband, suits the hair, with rosy cheeks, mascara and tinted lip balm. A light tray holding an empty bowl, foam cereal and a card spoon is the prop. It's the warmest option here and takes almost no prep, which makes it good for spirit days and indoor parties.
24. Cereal Killer Costume With Milk Carton Cape

A milk carton cape makes the cereal-and-milk link obvious from behind. Wear a blue shirt, white trousers and blue sneakers underneath. Make the cape from light white fabric or a disposable tablecloth, then add simple blue carton graphics and the words "Cereal Killer." Plastic tablecloths tear at the neck, so I reinforce the top edge with a fold of duct tape before punching any holes for the ties. Fix flattened boxes down the front of the shirt, each with a red X. A high ponytail or white-and-blue wig suits it, with icy blue shadow, pink blush and glossy lips. Carry a bowl-shaped treat bucket and wear card cereal-box earrings. The cape adds movement without making the outfit heavy or awkward in a crowd.
25. Cereal Killer Costume With Bowl Hat

Here the bowl on your head is the whole joke. Glue a clean foam bowl to a wide headband, fill it with light pom-poms and fix a card spoon at an angle. Hot glue holds foam to plastic well but melts thin foam, so I use a low-temperature glue gun for this. Wear a red tee, black jeans and checkerboard sneakers. Add flattened box panels across a utility vest, each marked with a red X and a funny "crunch report" note. A low bun gives the headband something to grip, or choose a short wig that won't tangle under the bowl. Red liner, rosy cheeks and a few coloured face gems suit it, and a small evidence notebook is the last prop. The bowl gets noticed first, and the rest stays easy to wear.
26. Cardboard Cereal Killer Costume

Plain recycled card can build a whole costume that looks far more expensive than it is. A neutral long-sleeve shirt, black trousers and sneakers are the comfortable base. Cut generic boxes, bowls, spoons and lettering from light card and colour them with markers or craft paint. Arrange them on a card vest that slips over your head, so no glue ever touches your clothes. Score the card along the shoulders before folding, or the fold cracks unevenly. Add red X marks and comic captions like "CRUNCH" and "CASE CLOSED," plus a headband with a tiny card bowl. Tousled hair and simple red-and-black eye makeup suit it, and a card case file finishes the look. It costs very little and goes back in the recycling afterwards.
27. Comic Book Cereal Killer Costume

Bold outlines and speech bubbles turn the pun into a comic strip you can wear. Choose a bright blue top, red trousers or skirt and white sneakers. Fix box cutouts to a removable vest and trace every edge with thick black marker; that outline is what makes it look printed rather than crafted. Add paper speech bubbles reading "Crunch!" "Snap!" and "Case Closed!" beside big red X marks. A smooth high ponytail or a sharply cut wig in a strong colour suits the style. Graphic liner, dotted cheeks for a print effect and a bright red lip finish the face. A foam bowl with a starburst sign is the prop. Strong outlines make it readable from across a room, and there's nothing frightening about it.
28. Plus Size Cereal Killer Costume With Tunic

A long black tunic gives a comfortable, roomy base with plenty of space for decoration. Pair it with opaque leggings and supportive black boots. Fix the flattened packages to a removable red sash and space them evenly along its length; if they bunch at one point the sash twists and pulls the tunic with it. Glitter X marks, "breakfast mystery" labels and foam cereal shapes add detail. Loose waves, a high bun or a bright shoulder-length wig all suit it, with softly smoky shadow, defined lashes and red lipstick. A light bowl purse and foam spoon earrings finish the outfit. It moves with you, keeps the proportions balanced and stays comfortable from the first drink to the last.
29. Maternity Cereal Killer Costume With Cereal Bowl Belly

A bump makes a very good cereal bowl. Wear a stretchy white maternity top, black leggings and supportive sneakers. Cut a bowl shape from soft felt and fix it around the belly with nothing rigid and nothing tight; I'd use a few safety pins on the top itself or a wide, soft elastic band that sits below the bump. Add felt cereal pieces and a soft fabric spoon. Flattened box panels above and beside the bowl, marked with friendly red X symbols, carry the pun. A loose braid or comfortable ponytail and gentle everyday makeup with rosy blush and tinted balm keep it easy. A cardigan adds warmth without hiding the design. It's clear in photos and puts no pressure on the waist.
30. Kids Cereal Killer Costume With Colorful Boxes

For kids, I swap the dark bits for bright colours and silly breakfast cartoons. Dress your child in a red sweatshirt, black joggers and comfortable sneakers. Fix very light flattened boxes with sewn-on fabric loops or hook-and-loop dots that an adult has secured; children pick at anything loose, and stick-on dots peel fast under small fingers. Decorate with cartoon X eyes, "super crunched" labels and bright foam cereal. Leave out anything sharp or dangling. Spiky hair, a ponytail or two buns suit it, with washable face paint for rosy cheeks and tiny cereal shapes. A soft foam spoon and a bowl-shaped treat bucket are the props. The joke stays simple to get, and your child can move freely in a school parade or on the street.
31. Couple Cereal Killer And Milk Costume

Cereal needs milk, so one of you plays the killer and the other the carton. The cereal killer wears a black shirt, dark jeans and red sneakers, with flattened boxes on a sash, X marks, a bowl headband, tousled hair and simple red-and-black makeup. The milk partner wears all white, white sneakers and a light carton-shaped tabard with blue graphics. A tabard, two panels joined at the shoulders, is much easier to wear than a box costume, because you can sit, hug and get through a door. Neat hair or a white-and-blue wig and fresh, shimmery makeup suit the milk. Carry a foam spoon and bowl between you for the photos. The pairing explains itself, and there's nothing graphic or unsafe in either outfit.
32. Best Friend Cereal Killer Costume

Best friends can match without dressing as twins. Give each friend their own palette, say red and black for one and blue and white for the other. Add matching "Cereal Killer One" and "Cereal Killer Two" sashes covered with different boxes, red X symbols and breakfast case labels. Coordinated sneakers and matching foam spoon earrings link the pair. One friend in space buns, the other in a high ponytail, with ribbon in each outfit's colours, keeps it varied. The same winged liner and bright lipstick on both faces connects you. Split a card case file in half and carry one piece each, so the joke only completes when you stand together. You look coordinated without wearing identical clothes.
33. Group Cereal Killer Costume

A group can turn the pun into a full investigation team. Everyone wears black jeans and sneakers, with a different solid-colour shirt each. Make matching vests with flattened generic boxes, red X marks, numbered evidence labels and foam cereal. Give each person a role, such as investigator, crunch analyst, bowl specialist or breakfast reporter, and print the role on their vest; roles give people something to act out, which is what makes a group costume fun. Hair can vary, but matching red headbands pull the group together. Keep makeup to graphic liner and one coloured cheek decal each. Bowls, clipboards, spoons and card folders are the props. The group reads as one in photos, and everyone still gets their own look.
34. Family Cereal Killer Costume

A whole family can run one breakfast investigation together. Adults wear black trousers and box-covered vests, while children wear bright sweatshirts with soft felt cereal shapes. Give one adult a tan detective coat, another a white chef apron, and the kids bowl hats or treat buckets. Mark every empty box with a red X and kind phrases like "crunch complete." Felt on the kids' clothes is softer and lighter than card, so it's more comfortable over a long evening. Everyone should wear comfortable sneakers, and every attachment should be checked before you leave. Matching ribbons or headbands tie the family together, with simple liner for adults and washable cereal cheek paint for kids. It gives everyone a different part in one clear theme.
35. Pet And Owner Cereal Killer Costume

A dog can join in, as long as its costume never touches the neck, legs or breathing. The owner wears a white tee, black jeans, sneakers and a removable sash covered with flattened boxes and red X marks, plus a messy ponytail or wig, graphic liner and a bowl-shaped purse. For the dog, a properly fitted fabric vest with soft felt cereal shapes and "Breakfast Detective" lettering is enough. Let them wear it at home for short spells first, with treats, before the big night. A small plush bowl can go on the back if they put up with it, and skip any headpiece that bothers them. The pun still works, and your pet stays comfortable.
Wording That Passes School and Office Rules
Many schools and workplaces ban costumes with weapons, fake blood or violent wording, and the word killer alone can raise an eyebrow with some staff. The pun survives fine if you change how you play it.
- Lean on the detective, chef or prisoner angles rather than the killer one. A sash reading "Breakfast Detective" or "Case Closed" still tells the joke once people see the boxes.
- Use soft words on the labels: crunched, toasted, eaten, case closed. Leave out stabbed, murdered or anything similar.
- Swap any knife or cleaver idea for a spoon. A giant foam spoon gets the bigger laugh anyway.
- Draw the X marks in red marker or tape, never as splatters or drips. Neat lines read as cartoon, splatters read as gore.
- Cover or turn brand logos to the inside if your workplace avoids product names, and decorate the plain gray side instead.
If It Rains
Card softens and curls in rain within minutes. If you're trick-or-treating outdoors, cover each box front with clear packing tape before you attach it, wear a clear poncho on top, or fall back on a felt X sewn onto the shirt, which stays the same in any weather.
Save Your Cereal Boxes From Now On
A good cereal killer costume is an obvious joke worn on clothes you can stand in for hours. Empty boxes, card signs, fabric X marks, foam spoons, bowls and case labels give you more than enough detail, and none of it needs gore. Pick the base for the weather and the event: a dress, a sweatshirt, a jumpsuit, pyjamas or matching family outfits. Flatten every box, sand or tape sharp card edges, and test every attachment at home. Kids and pets need the lightest, most secure decorations so they can move freely. Start saving boxes a few weeks ahead, take care with the hair and shoes, and you'll have a cheap costume people remember.
