Few people give a costume stylist as much to work with as Cher. Her wardrobe runs from 1960s bohemian separates through disco sequins, Oscar-night gowns, leather rock looks and full showgirl feathers, and much of the stage work came out of her long partnership with designer Bob Mackie. What ties every era together is surprisingly simple: very long dark hair, something that catches the light, and makeup with real intent behind it. I build most of these from thrifted basics, rhinestone trim and costume jewelry, and I swap the famously sheer originals for lined versions you can wear in a room full of people. Below are 35 looks, from a no-sew evening outfit to a feathered headpiece you'll have to plan around doorways.

That Long Black Wig Is Most of the Costume
Before you decide on an era, sort the hair. On almost every look below, people recognise Cher from the wig before they notice the outfit, so it is where I put the budget. For the straight looks, you want a wig that reaches at least the middle of your back, with a lace or skin-top part so the center line looks like a scalp rather than a seam.
- Brush a synthetic wig only with a wide-tooth comb or a wig brush, starting at the ends. Brushing from the root snaps fibres and the ends turn to fuzz.
- Keep it away from curling irons and oven doors unless the label says heat-friendly. Ordinary synthetic fibre frizzes or melts with heat.
- Trim the front of the hairline a little if it looks too dense. Cheap wigs often have a thick, straight edge that gives them away in photos.
- Wear a wig cap and pin the wig in at least four places. Very long wigs are heavy and slide backward through the evening.
The curly late-1980s wigs need a different approach. They tangle at the nape, where they rub against a collar or jacket, so I loosen that area with my fingers every so often and avoid brushing curls at all. A light mist of water and a bit of fabric softener brings back the bounce afterward.
1. Turn Back Time Cher Costume

This is the costume most people picture when they hear her name, so it carries the least risk of blank stares. I start with a long-sleeve black bodysuit tucked into high-waisted shorts, then add opaque tights or two layers of fishnets so you aren't relying on the shorts for coverage. A cropped faux-leather biker jacket and tall black boots go over that. The wig matters more than anything else here: it needs to be long, curly and enormous, and a cheap one will look flat by the second hour, so tease the crown and spray it before you leave. Smoky eyes, a neutral lip and stacked silver cuffs are plenty. If shorts aren't for you, fitted black trousers keep the same outline.
2. Believe Music Video Cher Costume

The “Believe” era reads through contrast: a cool, shiny outfit under a warm red-orange wig. I'd go with a silver or pale blue fitted top and matching wide-leg trousers, since a slick floor-length column dress shows every crease once you've sat down. Platform shoes are part of the look, but buy ones with a wide base so you can actually dance. A smooth, shoulder-length wig in that bright copper shade does most of the work, and frosted shadow with a glossy nude lip finishes the face. If you add rhinestones to a thrifted top, use a fabric glue rated for stretch and let it cure overnight; a quick dab of hot glue pops off the moment the fabric moves.
3. I Got You Babe Cher Costume

Early Cher is the easiest era to thrift. A long-sleeve patterned blouse, dark flared trousers and a shaggy faux-fur vest in brown, rust or cream gets you most of the way to “I Got You Babe.” Let the flares fall almost over flat ankle boots; if the hem stops above the boot, the 1960s line is gone. The hair must be long, straight and black with a dead-straight center part, which is the one place I'd spend a little more on a wig. Keep the makeup to black liner, separated lashes and a peachy lip, and choose earrings that dangle rather than anything sleek and modern.
4. Sonny And Cher Couple Costume

For a couple, the trick is matching the palette, not the clothes. The Cher half wears patterned bell-bottoms, a flowing blouse, a faux-fur vest and flat boots, with a waist-length black wig parted down the middle and a sharp wing of liner. The Sonny half takes striped or patterned flares, a ruffled shirt, a fringed vest and brown ankle boots, plus a dark pageboy wig and a neat stick-on mustache. I lay both outfits on the bed side by side and pull anything that clashes; warm brown, burgundy, cream and orange sit together comfortably. A light toy microphone is a good shared prop, and a stick-on mustache needs a spare in your pocket because it will lift by the end of the night.
5. 1960s Fur Vest Cher Costume

The fur vest is doing the talking here, so spend your effort on it. Pick a shaggy one in cream or tan and layer it over a fitted black turtleneck and high-rise chocolate bell-bottoms. Faux fur sheds, so give it a hard shake outdoors and run a lint roller over it before you put it on, or you'll be wearing it on your black top all evening. Platform ankle boots, big hoops and a few chunky rings are enough jewelry. A hip-length black wig, smudged liner and a pale nude lip finish it. It's also one of the warmer options on this list if you're out in the cold.
6. 1960s Mod Mini Dress Cher Costume

Not every 1960s Cher look was bohemian. A mod mini dress in a black-and-white geometric print gives a cleaner version, and it is often hanging on a thrift rack already. I pair it with opaque tights and low block-heel boots; a hem that stops just above the knee is fine and looks just as period. Choose a straight black wig with blunt bangs if you want the mod side to read, or a center part if you want it to read as Cher first. Graphic winged liner and matte skin do the rest. Because it is ordinary clothing, it is one I suggest for office parties and school events.
7. White Fringe Jumpsuit Cher Costume

Fringe is the reason to choose this one: it swings every time you move. Start with a fitted white jumpsuit, or a white bodysuit with high-waisted flares, then sew rows of white fringe down the sleeves, hips and outer legs. I sew fringe rather than glue it, because glued fringe tears away at the first tug. Cut the leg fringe so it stops a good few centimetres above the floor in your actual boots, or you'll step on it on the stairs. Silver platforms, a rhinestone cuff and a center-parted waist-length wig keep it clearly Cher, and a short fringed cape is optional if you like extra movement.
8. Floral Two-Piece Cher Costume

A floral two-piece shows her softer 1970s side and is one of the lightest costumes here. I look for a long-sleeve cropped blouse and a high-waisted maxi skirt in the same bold print, and slip a nude camisole under the top if the gap at the waist is more than you want. Gold platform sandals or block-heel boots should peek out below the hem. Long straight black hair and glossy peach lips keep it in period, and a fabric flower tucked behind one ear is a sweet touch. Good for a warm room where a velvet coat would be miserable.
9. Rainbow Sequin Cher Costume

Rainbow sequins say Cher from across a party faster than almost anything. Go for a multicolor sequin jumpsuit with flared legs, or a rainbow sequin top over plain black bell-bottoms. Sequin fabric is scratchy on the inside, especially under the arms, so I look for a lined piece or wear a soft long-sleeve layer underneath. Let the sequins be the only pattern; a printed cape on top just turns into noise. Check for loose threads before you wear it, because one pulled thread can unravel a whole row of sequins. Purple shadow, sharp liner and the long center-parted wig finish it.
10. 1973 Oscars Cher Costume

The early 1970s gold red-carpet look translates well into a lined gold gown. Find a long fitted dress covered in beads, rhinestones or metallic embroidery; if fitting a full gown is a struggle, a high-waisted skirt and matching embellished crop top are much easier to alter. I keep the accessories to gold platform sandals, drop earrings and a stack of bracelets, since a heavily beaded dress already competes with any necklace. A sleek black wig falling well below the shoulders, bronze shadow and a caramel lip do the rest. Bring a light gold shawl for coverage. I'd save this one for a formal party or a contest where people dress up properly.
11. 1974 Met Gala Cher Costume

The 1974 Met Gala gown was famously sheer, so I build this one on a fitted nude slip and treat the mesh as an overlay. Choose a floor-length mesh dress with silver beading and crystal appliqués, with soft white feather trim at the hem or sleeves. That gown set a pattern for body-skimming red-carpet dressing that people still copy, which is why guests will place it. I attach the feathers with a few hand stitches or snaps so they come off before washing and before you squeeze through a crowded bar. Silver heels, a rhinestone bracelet and an extra-long straight black wig finish it.
12. 1975 Beaded Feather Cher Costume

This mid-1970s portrait look is the beaded gown with a feathered finish. I start with a nude-lined mesh dress covered in silver, white and pale gold stones and add a feather panel round the lower skirt, or a feather wrap you can take off once you're inside. Iron-on rhinestone strips are a fair budget fix on a plain mesh overlay, but test the iron on a scrap first; mesh melts quicker than you'd expect. Check that the front lining is fully opaque under a phone flash, which is harsher than a mirror. Waist-length straight hair, thin arched brows and a pale gloss give you the face.
13. Take Me Home Disco Cher Costume

For the “Take Me Home” disco look, a gold sequin leotard over opaque dance tights is the base, with a detachable gold overskirt or wrap so you can decide how much coverage you want on the night. The headpiece makes the showgirl shape. I build it on a padded headband with lightweight craft feathers and add a thin elastic under the hair at the back, because a tall headpiece tips forward the moment you nod. Wear loose black curls here instead of pin-straight hair. Gold shadow, thick lashes and berry gloss suit the era. Keep your hands free for dancing and pin every accessory with hidden clips.
14. Silver Disco Cher Costume

Silver is the cooler alternative to gold, and a mirrored jumpsuit is the simplest way to get it. Look for a sequin or lamé one-piece with flared legs and a defined waist. Jumpsuits are hard to fit if your torso is long, so a metallic wrap top with matching high-rise trousers is a sensible plan B. Lamé creases badly, so hang it in a steamy bathroom rather than ironing it. A light silver cape fixed at the shoulders adds movement without pinning your arms. One color top to bottom makes it easier to put together than the patterned stage outfits, and it glows under party lights.
15. Butterfly Cape Cher Costume

The butterfly cape takes a plain black outfit and turns it into a television-era stage costume. Wear a fitted black jumpsuit, or a black long-sleeve top and flares, and attach large wings of light printed fabric from the shoulders to the wrists so they open when you lift your arms. I use loops of elastic round the wrists rather than glove ends, which lets you pick up a drink without dragging the wing through it. Turquoise, violet, emerald and gold suit the colors of that era. Keep the wings soft, not wired; rigid wings catch on every door frame. Long straight hair and shimmering turquoise shadow finish it.
16. Flame Dress Cher Costume

A flame dress is a costume of shape and color rather than skin. Start with a fitted maxi dress in black, red or a lined nude, and build flame appliqués up from the hem in layers of red, orange, yellow and gold. I cut the flames from felt or fused fabric and stitch round the edge, because glued flames curl at the tips after an hour of body heat. A few smaller flames on the bodice tie it together. Keep them flat or lightly sequined so the skirt doesn't get bulky. Gold platforms, red crystal earrings and a long wavy black wig finish a look that judges understand straight away.
17. Red Ringmaster Cher Costume

The red ringmaster look gives you structured drama and stays family-friendly. A fitted red tailcoat with gold braid goes over a black high-neck bodysuit and tailored black trousers. The small red top hat needs an elastic under the hair at the nape, or it will slide every time you turn your head. Gold epaulets, decorative buttons and a short black cape can make an ordinary thrifted blazer look like a touring costume. I'd skip the whip; white gloves and a vintage-style microphone are better props. A long curly black wig balances the tailoring, and red lipstick keeps it theatrical.
18. 1986 Oscars Cher Costume

If you want maximum drama, this is the one. Her 1986 Oscars outfit is remembered for the towering feathered headpiece, so that is where your time goes. I build it on a wide padded headband and attach the feathers to a stiff base that sits on top, not just to the band, so the weight spreads across the crown. Expect to turn sideways through doors, and do a test wear at home for an hour before the party. Underneath, a fitted black velvet dress or jumpsuit with a jeweled neckline and a long wrap skirt keeps it modest. Long straight black hair, dark smoky eyes and a muted rose lip finish it.
19. 1988 Oscars Cher Costume

Cher won the Best Actress Oscar in 1988 wearing an intricately beaded gown, and this version is built on that sparkle. I'd choose a fitted long-sleeve black mesh dress over an opaque bodysuit or slip, then add rhinestone trim at the neckline and cuffs. A short beaded or fringed skirt layer adds movement. Beaded mesh is heavy and drags at the shoulders, so check the shoulder seams before you buy and reinforce them if they look thin. Soft curls with volume at the crown, smoky bronze eyes and a rose-nude lip suit it. Save this one for a formal party.
20. Black Leather Rock Cher Costume

The late-1980s rock look doesn't copy one exact performance outfit, which gives you room. A studded faux-leather jacket over a black sequin top, fitted black trousers, a wide silver belt and comfortable knee-high boots is the core. The hair is the big part: long, curly and high at the crown. Faux leather doesn't breathe, so if you're dancing, a soft faux-leather vest over a long-sleeve mesh top is cooler and still reads right. I keep the trousers and boots matte so the studs and sequins stand out. Most of it goes back into your normal wardrobe afterward.
21. Heart Of Stone Cher Costume

“Heart of Stone” is all about texture that looks like jewels. Start with a black fitted jumpsuit, or a high-neck top and slim trousers, and add an asymmetrical jacket covered in silver rhinestones, mirror pieces and dark crystal trim. Peel-and-stick gems on their own fall off quickly, so I add a dot of fabric glue under each one and let it dry flat overnight. Keep stones off the underarms and the seat; they get knocked off there and they scratch. A heart-shaped crystal brooch at the shoulder ties it to the theme. Very big curly black hair and a mauve lip finish it.
22. Love Hurts Tour Cher Costume

This early-1990s tour look pairs black velvet with deep purple and silver. Wear a fitted black jumpsuit under a long purple velvet coat with structured shoulders, and run rhinestone trim along the lapels and cuffs. Velvet crushes where you sit, so I hang the coat up for the drive instead of wearing it in the car. Black heeled boots give a stronger stance than pumps. The coat gives real warmth, which makes this one of the better choices for an outdoor party. Leave it open for photos so the sparkle underneath shows. A long curly wig and berry lips finish it.
23. Strong Enough Cher Costume

Late-1990s Cher, as in “Strong Enough,” is sleek and made for dancing. A fitted black velvet blazer goes over a silver sequin top and black flares, with platform ankle boots, a crystal choker and big silver hoops. The hair is long, straight and black with a center part that has to be perfectly straight, so I set it with a comb and a little hairspray before I leave the house. A few rhinestone strips on the blazer cuffs catch the light when you move your arms. A velvet maxi skirt works if you want something more formal. Everything here goes back into your wardrobe.
24. Red Wig Stage Cher Costume

She has gone red now and again, and a red wig is a good way to stand out at a party full of black-haired Chers. The wig is the star: long, wavy and copper-red with volume at the crown. Red wigs vary hugely in shade, so look at it in daylight before the party; some read pink indoors. Underneath, a fitted black gown or jumpsuit with a red sequin cape at the shoulders, cut to about mid-calf so it doesn't drag. Bronze shadow and brick-red lips tie the face to the hair. Chiffon sleeves are a lighter swap for the cape if you're dancing.
25. Gold Warrior Stage Cher Costume

For a big theatrical look, I mix a gold structured bodice with flowing black. A gold sequin or metallic top goes over a black long-sleeve jumpsuit, with a pleated black overskirt that opens at the front. Gold platform boots, broad cuffs and a geometric collar build the stage shape. Make the armor details from flexible craft foam and seal it with a coat of paint first; foam soaks up paint unevenly if you skip that step. Leave weapons at home, since a short gold cape gives just as much drama. Thick waves in a long black wig, or a high half-ponytail, finish it.
26. Moonstruck Loretta Cher Costume

Loretta Castorini from *Moonstruck* is for anyone who would rather wear real clothes than sequins. A black knee-length dress with three-quarter sleeves, sheer black tights and plain black pumps is the base, with a charcoal wool coat if it's cold. The hair is what sells the character: dark, curly and short in a soft rounded 1980s shape, which is easy to set on a wig with a few rollers. Classic red lips and a simple costume ring point fans toward the engagement plot. A paper bakery bag is a quiet prop. Good for a work party.
27. Mermaids Mrs. Flax Cher Costume

Mrs. Flax from *Mermaids* gives you a late-1950s, early-1960s silhouette. A polka-dot wiggle dress is the obvious choice, but wiggle dresses are hard to walk and sit in, so a bright blouse with cropped cigarette trousers is my easier version. A wide belt, low pumps, cat-eye sunglasses and a structured handbag set the period. A shoulder-length black wig in soft side-swept curls, winged liner and coral-red lips finish the face. A covered serving plate makes the film connection clear if you're happy to carry it. Best indoors, where big gowns would only get in the way.
28. Witches Of Eastwick Alexandra Costume

Alexandra Medford from *The Witches of Eastwick* is a relaxed, artistic costume. Tuck a loose ivory blouse into a long rust or burgundy skirt, add a wide leather-look belt, dark ankle boots and chunky handmade-looking earrings. I keep the wig texture soft and tousled; overly tight curls look too polished for an artist. A clean paintbrush and a small sketchpad point to her work without carrying wet paint around. A textured shawl adds warmth. It is easy to thrift and flatters most figures.
29. Mamma Mia Ruby Cher Costume

Ruby Sheridan’s entrance in *Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again* is a polished, grown-up diva look. Wear a tailored white trouser suit over a silver camisole, with metallic platforms, oversized crystal earrings and big tinted sunglasses. A platinum-blonde wig in big shoulder-length waves is the giveaway. White shows every smudge of foundation, so I put the jacket on last, after makeup is set with powder. A white faux-fur wrap is optional. Keep the suit sharp at the shoulders and loose through the leg.
30. Mask Rusty Dennis Cher Costume

Rusty Dennis from *Mask* is a grounded 1980s look built from things already in most closets: straight-leg jeans, a fitted T-shirt and a worn denim or faux-leather jacket. Add a patterned scarf, simple hoops and dark ankle boots. Her hair is short with layered curls and a lot of volume on top. I'd avoid turning her into a generic biker; she's a warm, independent mother, and the soft styling should say that. A canvas shoulder bag finishes it. It is a strong last-minute choice.
31. Silkwood Dolly Cher Costume

Dolly Pelliker from *Silkwood* is deliberately ordinary, which is both the appeal and the problem. High-waisted jeans, a plaid button-down, a plain crewneck or denim jacket, lace-up work boots and a canvas tote are all you need. A short, feathered dark wig, minimal liner and soft pink lips set the face. Because it is so plain, people may not guess it, so I pin a small printed character label discreetly to the tote. Comfortable for a casual party or a cool evening outside.
32. Tea With Mussolini Elsa Cher Costume

Elsa Morganthal from *Tea with Mussolini* gives you 1930s polish. A bias-cut satin midi dress in emerald, burgundy or deep blue is the base, with a fur-trimmed coat, low T-strap heels and a structured handbag. Bias-cut satin clings and shows every line, so wear a smooth slip underneath. A dark wig in smooth side-parted waves, thin brows and deep red lips set the era, and a small hat tilted to one side finishes it. I'd buy modern copies of vintage pieces; originals are fragile. Ideal for a formal party where a feathered headpiece would be too much.
33. Vegas Showgirl Cher Costume

A Vegas showgirl look celebrates her stage excess with coverage you can control. A silver sequin bodysuit over opaque tights, with a floor-length fringed skirt that opens at the front, gives you the shape. The headpiece is white and silver feathers on a padded headband. I check the view from inside it before the night, because feathers drooping over the brow block your side vision quickly. A feathered shoulder cape keeps your hands free. Silver shadow, winged liner and pink gloss finish the face, and it stays bright without being revealing.
34. Cleopatra Cher Costume

Her Cleopatra was pure Hollywood spectacle, so I style it that way and don’t pretend to historical accuracy. Wear a floor-length black gown with gold geometric trim over an opaque lining, plus a broad gold collar, wide cuffs and a rhinestone belt. Make the tall fan-shaped headpiece from lightweight craft foam painted gold; it needs to sit snugly so it doesn't wobble. Long straight black hair with blunt bangs, extended black liner and a muted red lip finish it. Skip staffs, blades and snake props. A pleated gold cape gives safe drama.
35. Last-Minute DIY Cher Costume

Short on time? Five pieces will do it: black flared trousers, a fitted sequin top, platform ankle boots, big silver earrings and the longest straight black wig you can find, parted exactly in the middle. That part is what people read first, so take a minute over it. Stretch your eyeliner outward, add bronzer and a glossy nude lip. A light black or silver scarf over the shoulders stands in for a stage cape, and a faux-leather jacket turns it into the rock-era version. No sewing needed.
Rhinestones, Fringe and Feathers That Make It to Midnight
Most of these costumes rely on trim, and trim is what fails first. I'd rather spend an extra evening on attachments than lose half a cape on the dance floor.
Glue or thread
Hot glue is quick but brittle, and it lets go on stretchy fabric and in cold air. For rhinestones on a jacket or top, I use a flexible fabric glue and let it cure for a full day. Fringe, feathers and anything that hangs should be stitched: a few hand stitches every few centimetres hold far better than any glue.
Feathers shed
Expect a trail of loose feather fibres. Shake feathered pieces outside before wearing, and keep a small lint roller in your bag for your black base layers. Store headpieces in a box, not a bag, so the feathers don't crush.
Sequins against skin
The inside of sequin fabric is rough, and the underarms take the worst of it. A fine long-sleeve layer or a soft lining underneath saves you a scratched night. After the party, turn sequins inside out and hand wash them in cool water if the label allows.
Cher Across Six Decades, Ready by Saturday
Every Cher in this list depends on the same few things: a long dark wig, a clear silhouette, something that sparkles and platforms you can stand in. Get those right and the era you choose is up to you, whether that is a 1960s vest, a disco leotard, an Oscar-night gown or a quieter film role. Line anything sheer, build headpieces light, and choose stable platforms or block heels. Thrifted clothes and removable rhinestone trim keep the detailed looks affordable, and most of the base pieces go back into your closet once the night is over.
