Descendants characters are a gift for costume building because every one of them is coded by colour. Mal is purple and green, Evie is blue and red, Uma is teal, Red is, well, red. Once you know a character's palette, most of the work is finding pieces in those shades and adding one or two signature details. I've pulled together thirty-five looks here, from the original Villain Kids and the Auradon students to the pirate crew, the royals and the newer Wonderland characters. Most can be built from faux-leather jackets, thrifted formalwear, patterned leggings and a bright wig, with a little fabric paint doing the rest.

Turning a Thrifted Jacket Into Villain Kid Leather
Almost every Isle of the Lost look starts with a cropped faux-leather jacket, and you rarely need to buy one in the right colour. A plain black or brown thrifted jacket can be decorated to suit Mal, Evie, Jay or Carlos. Here's the order I work in:
- Wipe the whole jacket with rubbing alcohol on a cloth. Faux leather often has a slick coating that stops paint from sticking.
- Use a flexible paint made for leather or vinyl, not regular acrylic. Plain acrylic cracks the first time the elbow bends.
- Paint thin coats and let each one dry fully. Thick coats stay tacky and pick up lint.
- Stitch patches on with a heavy needle rather than ironing them. An iron can melt or bubble faux leather in seconds.
- Add studs or spikes last, pressing them through a scrap of felt on the inside so the prongs don't scratch.
If you can't find a jacket, a cheap zip hoodie in the character's colour, with painted scales or patches, reads surprisingly well from a distance and is far kinder to kids who'll be outside for hours.
1. Red Descendants Costume With Heart Jacket

Red's look is punk Wonderland, and the hair is what people recognise first. A bright crimson wig twisted into two high buns does most of the work, so I'd spend the budget there. Underneath, layer a cropped red faux-leather jacket over a black mesh shirt and red tank, with split-leg red-and-black pants or black jeans covered in painted heart patches. Fingerless gloves, a heart buckle belt and black combat boots with red laces finish the outfit. Red lipstick, sharp liner and a gold pocket watch as the prop; skip the faux nose ring for younger kids. Every piece here is stretchy and flat-soled, so it holds up to a whole night of trick-or-treating.
2. Red Royal Descendants Costume With Heart Cape

The royal version of Red trades the moto jacket for a structured red dress or jumpsuit with black heart appliqués and a short cape with a raised collar. A raised collar flops unless it's interfaced, so I iron a strip of stiff interfacing inside it before the night. Add black leggings, ankle boots and a jewelled heart belt at the waist. A long crimson wig in loose waves, red lips and a few small hearts near one eye keep it soft. Put stretch fabric under the cape, since a stiff dress plus a cape gets hot and tiring fast at a school party.
3. Chloe Descendants Costume With Blue Fencing Jacket

Chloe is sporty and polished: a fitted royal-blue jacket with silver piping over a pale blue shirt and slim pants. Silver piping is easy to fake with a silver fabric paint pen along the seams, which looks surprisingly clean if you go slowly. Add a silver belt, blue fingerless gloves and boots or high-tops. The curly blue wig is non-negotiable for recognition. I'd skip any real fencing gear and make a light shield from painted craft foam, which won't knock into anyone in a crowded hallway.
4. Bridget Descendants Costume With Pink Velvet Dress

Bridget is pure candy colour. A short pink velvet dress with puffed sleeves, a fitted bodice and a flared skirt is the base, worn with heart-print tights and pink ankle boots or Mary Janes. Velvet sheds fluff on the cutting table and frays at the edges, so if you're sewing your own, finish the seams. A wavy pastel-pink wig, rosy blush and a couple of tiny heart face stickers keep the face sweet. A gold chain belt with faux flowers and a little box of foam cupcakes make safe props for any age.
5. Queen Of Hearts Descendants Costume With Crimson Gown

The Queen of Hearts needs a floor-length crimson gown with a fitted waist, structured shoulders and heart details at the sleeves. Black tulle panels or a black underskirt add depth without much weight. Long red gloves, a jewelled belt and a crimson tiara finish the clothing, with a sleek straight red wig parted in the centre. Bold red lips and heart-shaped eye makeup bring the drama; a folding red fan is a friendlier prop than a sceptre. I'd wear low red heels or pointed flats, because the hem of a long gown catches on stilettos.
6. Uma Headmaster Descendants Costume With Teal Braids

Uma as headmaster is her pirate wardrobe grown up. A teal brocade coat over a black fitted top and dark teal pants, with gold trim, shell-shaped buttons and shoulder fringe, keeps the sea connection clear. Brocade is stiff and frays badly when cut, so if you're adding trim, stitch it on rather than gluing, or the glue will show through the weave. Long teal braids in a high crown, turquoise shadow and a deep berry lip complete her. A rolled school notice or a large key ring makes a better prop here than anything piratey. She's also a natural centrepiece for a bigger group.
7. Uliana Descendants Costume With Sea Witch Robe

Uliana is one of the most detailed looks in the newer cast, which makes her rewarding if you like layering. Start with a long robe or jacket mixing purple, teal, green and metallic gold fabrics, over a teal shirt, purple leggings and sturdy platform boots. Then build up the texture with fringe, mesh panels, faux shells, beads and curling fabric strips that suggest movement under water. Long blue, green and gold braids are the most important part. A shell pouch or a small sealed bottle of coloured water makes the prop, and I'd glue the cap shut so the glitter stays inside.
8. Ella Descendants Costume With Denim Butterfly Dress

Ella is the gentle option for anyone tired of faux leather. A knee-length blue denim dress with a fitted bodice and flared skirt, decorated with gold butterfly appliqués and contrast stitching, carries her handmade feel. Iron-on appliqués peel off denim after a few hours unless you add a few stitches around the edges, so I always tack them down. A narrow gold belt, braided bracelets, a curly blue wig with butterfly clips and brown lace-up boots finish her. A small fabric pouch or butterfly notebook is all the prop she needs.
9. Cinderella Descendants Costume With Blue Ball Gown

For Cinderella, the gown is the costume. Look for lightweight satin or layered tulle so the full skirt looks grand without dragging on your shoulders all night; heavy satin gowns get uncomfortable faster than people expect. Silver embroidery, crystal details and sheer blue sleeves add the royal finish. A long blue wig in a side fishtail braid, silver-blue shadow and a soft rose lip. A clear clutch is a sweet nod to the glass slipper, and silver flats under the long skirt mean nobody will know you're not in heels.
10. Young Hook Descendants Costume With Red Pirate Jacket

Young Hook is polished pirate school rather than rugged sailor. A white ruffled or wide-collar shirt tucked into slim black pants, under a cropped red velvet jacket with gold piping and ornate buttons, sets the shape. Black knee-high boots and a wide belt give him the right silhouette. The hook is the signature, and I'd only use one made from soft foam or flexible plastic with rounded ends; hard hooks catch on clothes and on other people. A red scarf at the waist and lightly tousled hair finish him.
11. Young Hades Descendants Costume With Blue Flame Hair

Young Hades is all about the hair. A tall blue wig styled upward suggests his flame without any effects; spray it with a little extra-hold hairspray and tease from the roots so it doesn't sink by midnight. The clothing is a fitted black faux-leather jacket trimmed in electric blue over a blue shirt, dark pants with blue stitching or lightning patches, and combat boots. Smoky blue shadow and blue fingerless gloves pull it together. He pairs easily with young Maleficent, Uliana, Morgie and Hook for a full Merlin Academy group.
12. Young Maleficent Descendants Costume With Purple Jacket

Young Maleficent should feel mischievous and stylish, not like the grown-up villain in robes. Wear a fitted purple jacket with green piping over a black top, with a purple plaid skirt or slim black pants, patterned tights, ankle boots and a wide green belt. A dark purple wig with green streaks links her to Mal's palette. Big horns get heavy and push the wig back, so I'd choose a small curved horn headband instead. Purple and green shadow and a fabric black rose or decorated spellbook finish her.
13. Morgie Descendants Costume With Green And Gold Shirt

Morgie is serpent colours in relaxed Villain Kid layers. A green shirt patterned with gold scales or swirls, fitted black pants, a long dark vest and a loose black scarf form the outfit, with gold-trimmed boots and stacked cuffs. If you can't find a scale print, a stencil and metallic gold fabric paint work well on a plain green shirt; let each coat dry fully or it cracks when the fabric stretches. A textured dark wig with green streaks, green liner and a snake-shaped brooch keep him recognisable. Everything is soft and easy to dance in.
14. Mal Isle Of The Lost Descendants Costume

Mal's original look is the one every longtime fan knows. A cropped purple faux-leather jacket over a green-and-purple top, purple skinny pants with painted scales or vines, black fingerless gloves and lace-up combat boots with purple laces. The shoulder-length purple wig with blunt layers is what makes her read as Mal rather than any purple character, so it's worth a quick trim to get those layers right. A handmade spellbook makes the prop. For younger kids, I'd swap the faux leather for a purple hoodie and printed leggings, which are warmer and far easier to move in.
15. Mal Descendants 2 Costume With Purple Moto Vest

Mal's second-movie look is a tidier version of her punk style. A dark purple moto vest or cropped jacket over a textured green shirt, fitted purple pants with zip details, a wide black belt and buckled ankle boots. Fingerless gloves keep the Isle edge. Choose a vivid purple wig in a long, tousled bob. If you're decorating plain clothes, scale stencils and a few studs go a long way, but press studs through doubled fabric so they don't tear out. It's a streamlined option for anyone who wants Mal's colours without much bulk.
16. Mal Descendants 3 Costume With Purple Leather Jacket

The third-movie Mal goes deeper purple with a sportier, royal edge. A fitted purple faux-leather jacket with green scale panels, coordinating slim pants and tall black boots with purple straps. A long wavy purple wig with blue ends is the detail that dates the look to this film, so look for an ombré wig rather than a solid one. Layered rings, a dragon brooch and a small purple clutch with a gold dragon replace bigger props. Because it's all separates, I'd pick stretch pants and cushioned boots for a long event.
17. Evie Isle Of The Lost Descendants Costume

Evie's original costume mixes royal motifs with bright patchwork. A blue-and-red tunic or long vest covered in hearts, crowns and patches, over black leggings or slim blue pants, plus a red belt, fingerless gloves and blue lace-up boots. The long royal-blue wig with a centre part is essential. A small crown on a headband falls off easily, so I prefer a crown hair clip pinned through the wig. Thrifted clothes, iron-on patches and fabric markers will get you most of the way, and a light plastic hand mirror completes her.
18. Evie Descendants 2 Costume With Pirate Skirt

Evie's second-movie look keeps her designer polish but adds Isle layers. A fitted blue jacket over a red-and-blue patterned top, a high-low skirt over dark leggings, and patchwork with crowns and hearts give her a handmade feel that still looks deliberate. Distressed blue boots and a wide red belt anchor it. A long blue wig in loose waves with one small side braid, shimmering blue eyes and red lips. A little sewing kit bag is a lovely nod to her design skills. The high-low hem moves well in photos and doesn't trip anyone on stairs.
19. Evie Descendants 3 Costume With Red Jumpsuit

In the third movie, Evie shifts to red with blue accents. A fitted red jumpsuit or red top and pants, layered under a cropped blue-and-red jacket with crown patches, heart details and silver zips. A removable blue overskirt adds formal flair, and it comes off if the party gets crowded. Distressed boots, long bright blue waved hair, blue shimmer and red lips finish the look. I'd hand a small measuring tape or sketchbook to anyone wearing this one; it's the detail that tells people she's the designer.
20. Carlos Descendants Costume With Black And White Jacket

Carlos is graphic black, white and red, the colours of his family. A black-and-white moto jacket with spotted panels over a red shirt, black pants with white stripes or patches, and red-and-black high-tops. The short two-tone wig is the giveaway; if a wig isn't happening for a child, temporary white hair spray on one side of dark hair can stand in, though it rubs onto collars. Fingerless gloves and a tech wristband round him out, and a small plush dog is a sweet, friendly prop for kids.
21. Jay Descendants Costume With Red And Gold Vest

Jay is the most comfortable Villain Kid to wear because he's built on sportswear. A sleeveless red vest or moto jacket with gold trim and textured panels over a black athletic shirt and fitted black pants. Tie red fabric at the waist and add gold paint details down the legs, using a flexible fabric paint so it bends with the knee. A long dark wig in a low ponytail, a wide cuff and fingerless gloves finish him. I'd pick this one for a dance party or any event where you'll be on your feet.
22. King Ben Descendants Costume With Blue Royal Jacket

King Ben is the clean, royal contrast to all the Villain Kid colour. A bright blue military-style jacket with gold piping, decorative buttons and a crest patch over a white shirt and slim navy pants, with a gold sash and polished boots. The crest patch matters most; without it, a blue jacket with gold trim reads as a generic band uniform. Neat short hair, simple makeup and a small gold crown or royal pin. A rolled proclamation tied with blue ribbon makes the prop. He pairs naturally with Mal or a larger Auradon group.
23. Audrey Descendants 3 Costume With Pink Cape

Audrey's transformed look is dramatic pink and dark purple with pointed shoulders. A fitted pink-and-purple dress or jumpsuit, a removable high-low overskirt, a dark purple cape, a jewelled belt and ankle boots or flats. A long pastel-pink wig with lavender sections and a sharp pink-and-purple wing give the face its edge. Check the event rules before carrying a staff, since many schools and venues ban long props; a purple crystal clutch is the safer stand-in. A dark crown finishes her as the centre of a villains group.
24. Uma Descendants 2 Pirate Costume

Uma's original pirate look is teal, black and full of ocean texture. A fitted teal shirt under a distressed black-and-turquoise pirate jacket, layered torn skirts over black leggings and a wide belt. Mesh sleeves, fringe, faux shells and metallic trinkets bring it to life. The long turquoise braids with beads and small shells are what everyone notices; synthetic braid hair is light, but beads add up quickly, so I keep them to the ends. Turquoise shadow, berry lips and a rolled treasure map. She, Harry Hook and Gil make the easiest pirate trio there is.
25. Harry Hook Descendants Costume With Red Coat

Harry Hook is pirate-punk with a long red or burgundy coat over a black vest and a loosely buttoned white shirt. Slim black pants, a wide belt and tall black boots set the silhouette, with silver chains, red scarves and small hook decorations on the coat. Dark liner around the eyes gives him his theatrical edge. A soft, rounded costume hook keeps him safe in a crowd. I'd leave the pirate hat behind outdoors, since a wide brim catches the wind and doesn't add much recognition.
26. Gil Descendants Costume With Orange Leather Vest

Gil is burnt orange and brown, rugged but friendly. An orange faux-leather vest over a brown or mustard shirt, distressed dark pants, a wide belt and brown knee-high boots. Faux-fur shoulder trim adds detail; it sheds everywhere when cut, so trim it outdoors and run a lint roller over the cut edge before you sew. Windswept blond hair or a short golden wig and a little bronzer suit him. A rolled map or a foam mug finishes the look, and he's at his best standing next to Uma and Harry.
27. Jane Descendants Costume With Blue School Dress

Jane is the sweet, school-friendly option. A pale blue fit-and-flare dress with a white collar, fitted waist and subtle silver trim, plus a cropped blue cardigan or short cape for cooler weather. White tights and blue ballet flats keep it comfortable and age-appropriate. Soft waves with a blue headband, pink blush and rosy gloss are enough makeup. A small silver wand clip in the hair is easier to manage than a long wand, and a blue book bag with stars finishes the student look. Simple and recognisable, with no heavy layers.
28. Celia Descendants Costume With Purple Fringe Jacket

Celia mixes fortune-teller patterns with youthful Isle style. A purple cropped fringe jacket over a colourful patterned blouse, fitted purple pants or striped leggings and a short wrap skirt at the waist. Gold coin trim, scarves and stacked bracelets give her movement, and coin trim is noisy, which kids tend to love. Purple boots or black high-tops, dark curly hair with purple streaks and a bright head wrap. Oversized decorative cards make a fun prop. I'd keep it to playful card tricks and leave any serious ritual theme out entirely.
29. Dizzy Descendants Costume With Colorful Salon Dress

Dizzy is bright, creative and all about hair. A teal or purple dress over patterned leggings, with a short patchwork apron, colourful ribbons and bow-shaped buttons. Mismatched socks and purple lace-up boots add her cheerful Isle feel. Purple hair in two high buns or a short wig with blue and pink streaks, glittery shadow and glossy pink lips. A toy comb, bright clips or a little salon bag make good props; never real styling tools. Thrift-store clothes and leftover craft supplies are really all she needs, which makes her a great last-minute project.
30. Lonnie Descendants Costume With Red Warrior Jacket

Lonnie mixes Auradon polish with warrior energy. A fitted red jacket with gold piping over a black or navy shirt, slim dark pants and a wide red sash tied firmly at the waist. A sash tied once works loose as you move, so I pin the knot from the inside with a safety pin. Gold wrist cuffs and shoulder details add the royal touch, with flat black boots for walking. A high ponytail or sleek braid, warm blush and defined liner. An Auradon team banner or a red fan is a safe prop, and there's no heavy armour to wear.
31. Doug Descendants Costume With Green School Jacket

Doug is the easy, casual Auradon student. A green jacket or cardigan over a white shirt and patterned tie, fitted tan or dark green pants and brown lace-up shoes. A school crest patch attached with removable fabric adhesive keeps the jacket wearable afterward. Neat blond hair with a side part and very simple makeup. A music folder or small headphones nod to his musical side. Put him next to Evie for a couple that reads instantly. He's comfortable, inexpensive and fine for school or a work party.
32. Chad Charming Descendants Costume With Blue Blazer

Chad Charming comes together from formal basics. A royal-blue blazer with gold trim over a crisp white shirt, slim cream pants, a blue-and-gold striped tie and brown loafers. Cream pants show every mark, so I'd treat them with a fabric protector spray if you have one, or at least keep a stain pen handy. A crest patch on the chest ties him to Auradon Prep. Smooth side-swept blond hair, a gold watch and a folded pocket square finish him. He joins Audrey, Ben, Jane and Lonnie neatly in a group.
33. Fairy Godmother Descendants Costume With Blue Suit

Fairy Godmother's modern look is magical colour in a school headmistress's suit. A fitted royal-blue blazer with matching knee-length skirt or tailored pants, over a pale blue blouse, with silver piping around the lapels. Short soft brown curls, luminous makeup, a rosy lip and a touch of silver shadow. A star brooch and crystal earrings add sparkle. Carry a light silver wand with rounded ends and ribbons, and a folder under one arm to show she runs the school. This is my favourite pick for a teacher or parent joining a family group.
34. Freddie Facilier Descendants Costume With Purple Top Hat

Freddie mixes rich purple, red and gold with a New Orleans-inspired flair. A fitted purple jacket over a striped red shirt and dark slim pants, a patterned vest, gold chain details and purple ankle boots. A small purple top hat sits on long dark hair with violet streaks; I'd anchor it with a pair of hair combs sewn inside the brim so it doesn't slide. Purple shadow, gold liner and a deep berry lip. Decorative cards or a small music pouch make the prop. She's a less common pick for fans of the animated characters.
35. Ally Descendants Costume With Blue Wonderland Dress

Ally is an easy Wonderland look built on a simple blue dress. A knee-length dress with a fitted bodice, puffed sleeves and a white collar, a black waist belt, patterned blue tights and white or black ankle boots. A pale blue headband holds long blond hair, or use a straight golden wig. Decorating a small crossbody with clock, key and teacup patches tells the Wonderland story without fragile props, and white gloves add a storybook touch. She pairs sweetly with Red, Bridget or the Queen of Hearts.
Bright Wigs Need a Little Care
Purple, blue, teal and crimson hair carry most of these characters, and the cheapest bright wigs tend to arrive flat, shiny and tangled. A few small steps make a big difference.
- Shake the wig out and brush it with a wide-tooth comb, working up from the ends, never from the roots down.
- Spray a light mist of fabric softener mixed with water to cut the shine and calm static.
- Keep synthetic wigs away from curling irons, ovens and candles. Most will frizz or melt with heat.
- Pin the wig through a wig cap at four points, front, back and both sides, so it doesn't shift when someone hugs you.
If a wig isn't comfortable for a child, coloured hair chalk or a temporary colour spray on their own hair is a fair swap. It rubs off onto collars and pillows, so dress them in darker tops and wash it out before bed.
Sorting a Group Into Isle Kids and Auradon
With a big group, I like to split it into two teams so the photos tell a story: Villain Kids in purple, blue, red and black faux leather on one side, and Auradon royals in blue, gold and white on the other. Give each team one shared element, such as matching fingerless gloves for the Isle side or a crest patch on every Auradon jacket. It pulls the group together even when some people have simpler costumes, and the youngest kids can join with just the right colours and the shared detail.
Which Character Is Easiest to Start With?
If you're new to this cast, I'd start with Jay, Carlos or Jane, since they're built from sportswear and school basics. Mal and Evie take a bit more effort, mostly in the wig, but they're the looks most people will recognise. Whichever you pick, lead with the character's two colours, then add the hair, one signature detail and comfortable shoes. Faux leather, thrifted jackets, patterned leggings and fabric paint can turn ordinary clothes into a convincing costume. For kids, stretch fabrics and sneakers win every time, and for adults, a structured coat or cape adds drama. Above all, keep the props light so you can enjoy the whole event.
