Dressing two adults and one child as a set is harder than it looks, mostly because the child usually has strong opinions about which part they get. I've put together trios that cover favorite characters, classic Halloween monsters, funny food combinations and simple homemade ideas, each with clothing, hair, makeup, props and shoes for all three people. Most let you swap the adult and child roles. Where it matters, I've noted how to lighten a costume for a warm night, what goes underneath on a cold one, and which pieces to soften for a baby or toddler.

Letting the Child Choose Their Part First
When I plan a family costume, I ask the child which character they want before anyone else picks. A child who chose their own role will wear it all night. A child who was told they're the dog will be out of it by the third house.
Then I fit the adults around that choice:
- Give the child the softest costume. Sweatshirt bases, open faces and no rigid parts.
- Let the adults take anything with panels, hats or long hems. Grown-ups can manage a cardboard box; most four-year-olds can't.
- Agree on one shared color or detail that connects the three, so you read as a set even when you're apart.
- Build the props last, and only for the adults. Children drop props, and you'll carry them home.
If you have two children who both want the same role, look at the food and object trios, where every part is equal and nobody is a sidekick.
Babies are the exception to all of this. They don't choose, so dress them in the role that needs the least: a footed sleeper in the right color, a soft hat, and nothing that goes over the face or around the neck. Give the bigger roles to the people who can walk.
1. Wizard Of Oz Family Costume

Dorothy, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion give you three very different silhouettes, which is why this trio reads so well. Dorothy is a blue gingham dress over a white blouse, braids tied with blue ribbon and red flats. Red ballet flats with a bit of glitter tape on the toe are far easier for a child to walk in than sparkly heels. The Scarecrow is a plaid shirt, loose brown pants, rope at the cuffs, a floppy hat and soft brown liner stitches. The Lion is tan sweats, a faux-fur mane, painted whiskers and brown sneakers. A basket for Dorothy and raffia for the Scarecrow. A toddler can ride in a wagon dressed as Toto's basket.
2. Mario Luigi And Toad Family Costume

Mario and Luigi are basically one costume in two colors, so the adults are easy: blue overalls, white gloves, brown boots or sneakers, then a red shirt and cap for Mario and green for Luigi. Felt mustaches stuck on with lash glue hold better than tape, or draw them with skin-safe makeup. The child as Toad needs white pants, a blue vest and a mushroom cap. I make that cap from felt stretched over a ring of soft foam so it stays light and doesn't slide over the eyes. Cardboard coins or a question-mark block are fun props. If your child would rather be the princess, a long pink dress and a crown swaps in without changing anything else.
3. Toy Cowboy Space Ranger Family Costume

Woody, Jessie and Buzz is a trio children recognize before adults do. Woody is jeans, a yellow plaid shirt, a cow-print vest, a red neckerchief, a cowboy hat and brown boots. Jessie is jeans, a white western shirt with yellow cuffs and a red braid, and a yarn braid sewn to a cap is often comfier for a child than a wig. Light freckles on both. Buzz goes on a white base with green and purple felt panels, a soft hood and a cardboard control panel on the chest. Rigid wings are the problem: they jab into a stroller or car seat, so make them detachable or leave them off. Cardboard pull-string tags on the cowboys are a sweet detail.
4. Superhero Family Of Three Costume

A superhero trio needs no complicated crafting, just matching colors. Two people in red fitted tops, black leggings or pants, black eye masks, short black gloves and tall boots, with yellow and black felt emblems on the chest. The youngest wears a red romper or bodysuit with black shorts and soft boot covers. I'd only put the mask on a small child for photos, because they pull at anything over their eyes. Skip long capes around little ones; a cape is easy to step on and catches in doors. Retro waves and a red lip for the adults, black belts on all three, and a big pose for the camera.
5. Addams Family Costume For Three

The Addams family looks polished because each of the three silhouettes is so specific. Gomez is a black pinstripe suit, white shirt, dark tie, slick side part and shiny shoes. Morticia is a floor-length black dress with long sleeves, straight black hair or a wig, pale foundation, smoky eyes and a deep red lip. Wednesday is a black dress with a crisp white collar, braids, black tights and flats. For the child, hem the dress well off the floor and keep makeup to almost nothing. A single faux black rose or an old book is all the props you need.
6. Peter Pan Family Costume

Peter Pan, Wendy and Tinker Bell suit a family where one adult is happy to wear tights. Peter is a green tunic over leggings with a brown belt, a green cap and flat brown boots, plus a tousled auburn wig or natural hair. A cap made from felt with a sewn-in elastic chin loop won't blow off outside. Wendy is a pale blue ankle-length dress, a blue ribbon, soft curls and black flats. Tinker Bell is a green dress or romper, white tights, green shoes with pom-poms and a high bun. Gold shimmer, never loose glitter, on a child. If the child is Tink, put the wings on elastic so they come off for the stroller and the car.
7. Little Red Riding Hood Family Costume

Red Riding Hood, the wolf and Grandma work best, in my experience, when the child plays Red and the adults take the funny parts. Red needs a white blouse, red skirt or dress, a bright hooded cape, braids and black flats, plus a light basket of fabric bread and faux flowers. The wolf is gray pants and top, faux-fur ears, a tail and a soft painted nose with whiskers rather than anything scary. Grandma is a floral nightgown, knitted shawl, round glasses, a white wig or bun and slip-resistant slippers. Let whoever wants the cape have it.
8. Three Bears Family Costume

The three bears is the costume I steer families toward when there's a baby, because a brown footed sleeper is already Baby Bear. Everyone else wears brown sweatshirts and joggers. Use slightly different shades of felt for each pair of ears so the three read as a family of individuals rather than clones. Papa gets a small bow tie, Mama a checked apron or bow, and Baby carries a plush bowl. Brown liner noses and dots, kept light. Faux-fur vests are warm outdoors but come off fast inside.
9. Three Little Pigs Family Costume

Three little pigs is fair to everyone, because nobody gets stuck as the background character. Pink sweatshirts and leggings, pig-ear headbands, curly felt tails and pink or white sneakers for all three. A pipe cleaner inside the felt tail keeps the curl. The props tell the story: raffia for straw, painted cardboard sticks and a light brick-printed box. Keep them small, since you'll be carrying the child's by the third house. Gingham bow ties or suspenders give each pig a personality. Thermals underneath for cold nights, and a soft pink hooded onesie with ears for a stroller rider.
10. Cat In The Hat Family Costume

The Cat in the Hat with Thing 1 and Thing 2 is a natural fit for one adult and two smaller people. The Cat wears a black top and pants, white gloves, a red bow tie and the tall striped hat, plus ears, a tail and a bit of white on the face. That hat is top-heavy, so I tuck an elastic chin strap or a few bobby pins into it. The Things are red shirts and pants with white numbered circles on the chest. Blue wigs shed and itch, so for younger children a blue beanie with yarn hair stitched on is the kinder choice. For a baby Thing, a red romper and a soft blue cap. Red sneakers all round.
11. Monsters Inc Family Costume

Sulley, Mike and Boo is a good choice for a long evening, because nothing in it is structured. Sulley wears a turquoise sweatshirt and pants with purple felt spots, a furry hood with small horns and blue sneakers. Mike is a lime-green top and leggings with a big felt eye on the chest and a curved smile below. Boo is the easy one: an oversized pink tee, purple leggings, white socks, sneakers and high pigtails. With a toddler as Boo, that everyday base makes diaper changes, snacks and stroller naps simple. A small plush door or clipboard is a good prop.
12. Ghostbusters And Friendly Ghost Costume

Two Ghostbusters and a friendly ghost works well for a family with a baby, who makes a perfect ghost in a white footed sleeper and soft hat. The adults wear tan coveralls or khaki shirts with cargo pants, black boots, utility belts and homemade logo patches. Proton packs from painted cardboard boxes and paper tubes on ribbon straps look great, but use wide straps or they dig into the shoulders after an hour. Avoid dangling cords. A smudge of gray on the cheeks. An older ghost wears a white hooded poncho with the face fully open and white sneakers, and keeps the expression cheerful for school events.
13. Jurassic Explorer Family Costume

Two park explorers and a dinosaur is a trio built almost entirely from reusable clothes. The explorers wear khaki shirts, cargo shorts or pants, hiking boots, wide-brim hats and laminated visitor badges, with binoculars and folded maps. The dinosaur is a green hooded sweatshirt and pants with felt scales, a soft tail and fabric teeth sewn around the hood edge. Stuff the tail lightly; a heavy tail drags the pants down on a small child. Skip the mask and paint a few green scales on the cheeks. Because everyone is in layers, this one handles changing weather well.
14. Beekeeper And Bees Family Costume

A beekeeper with two bees adjusts easily to different ages. The beekeeper wears beige coveralls or a light utility shirt and pants, tan boots, gloves and a wide hat with soft mesh around the brim. Pin the mesh back so it sits around the hat rather than over the face, since nobody wants to trick-or-treat through netting. The bees wear black and yellow striped tops, black leggings, antenna headbands, fabric wings and black sneakers. Yellow shadow and rosy cheeks, pom-poms on the shoes. The keeper carries a honeycomb-labeled bucket. Make the wings detachable for car rides. Two adult beekeepers with one child bee also works.
15. Safari Keepers And Lion Costume

Two safari keepers and a friendly lion is a simple split for parents and a child. The keepers wear khaki shirts, cargo pants or shorts, hiking shoes, canvas belts and brimmed hats, with toy binoculars and field notebooks. The lion is tan sweats with a faux-fur vest or a soft mane hood, a fabric tail and brown sneakers, plus a painted nose and whisker dots. Watch the mane on a child: faux fur gets hot fast and a full mane can fall over the eyes, so trim it back from the face. A wagon with removable cardboard vines makes a comfortable safari vehicle.
16. Circus Ringmaster Clown And Lion Costume

A ringmaster, a clown and a lion give a circus trio three clearly different roles. The ringmaster wears black pants, a white shirt, a red jacket with gold trim, boots and a small top hat, with a red lip. The clown is bright overalls, a striped shirt, suspenders, a bow tie, a tiny hat and sneakers, with rosy circles and a red nose rather than scary paint. The lion wears tan with a soft mane and painted whiskers. Big clown shoes are the thing I'd leave out; they're a trip hazard on dark sidewalks. Juggling scarves or a cardboard ticket make light props.
17. Farmer Scarecrow And Crow Costume

A farmer, a scarecrow and a crow make an autumn scene that's cheap and warm. The farmer wears overalls, a plaid shirt, work boots, a straw hat and a red bandana, carrying a basket of faux apples. The scarecrow is patched jeans, a flannel, raffia at the cuffs, a floppy hat and soft orange and brown stitch lines on the cheeks. The crow wears black leggings and a sweatshirt with layered felt wings sewn along the arms, a feathered headband and black sneakers. I put the foam beak on the headband above the forehead, never over the face, so it doesn't block a child's view. Everything layers well for a chilly night.
18. S’mores Family Costume

S'mores is funny, and each piece still works on its own if the family splits up. The graham cracker wears tan under two light cardboard panels painted with dotted lines. The chocolate bar wears dark brown with a rectangular foam or cardboard wrapper panel. The marshmallow is all white with a soft cylindrical panel and a white beanie. Cut every panel short enough to sit and climb stairs, and hang them from wide shoulder straps instead of string, which cuts into the neck. Cardboard also softens in rain, so I'd make the child's panel from craft foam or felt.
19. Bacon Egg And Toast Family Costume

Bacon, egg and toast is simpler than it looks, because each piece is a solid base plus one shape. The bacon is a red shirt and pants with wavy cream felt stripes and a red beanie. The egg wears white with a big yellow felt circle on the front and yellow shoes. The toast is tan clothing under a bread-shaped panel with brown painted edges. Tuck hair back so the shapes stay visible. I'd use felt instead of cardboard for the child's piece, since felt bends when they sit and doesn't crease. A spatula or checked napkin makes a fine prop; leave breakable kitchen things at home.
20. Avocado Toast And Egg Costume

Avocado, toast and egg is the same breakfast joke with a greener palette. The avocado wears a green sweatshirt and leggings with a pear-shaped felt panel and a removable brown pit cushion, a leafy headband and green sneakers. Make the pit removable for real; children like to hold it, and it's a pain in a car seat otherwise. Toast wears tan under a bread-shaped panel with a beige cap. The egg is white with a yellow felt yolk and a yellow bow or beanie. Natural makeup across all three. Flexible foam or felt beats stiff cardboard for a toddler.
21. Rock Paper Scissors Family Costume

Rock, paper and scissors is one of the clearest homemade trios, and it's a fun one for siblings who argue anyway. The rock wears gray sweats under a light crumpled-paper shell painted in a few grays. Paper is a white shirt and pants with thin blue lines and one red margin line drawn in fabric marker. Scissors wears silver-gray with a large felt scissors shape on the front. Keep every edge rounded and soft, especially on the scissors. Each person can hold a card showing their hand gesture, and pose in a circle as if mid-game.
22. Sun Moon And Star Family Costume

Sun, moon and star gives everyone a role that glows a little. The sun wears gold or yellow with a soft ray collar and a ray headband. The moon wears silver-gray with a crescent felt panel and cool shimmer. The star wears navy or gold with a padded star panel and metallic star clips in the hair. I'd stuff the rays and the star lightly with batting so they keep shape without going stiff. Felt-star wands, no loose glitter. For a baby, a navy sleeper with iron-on stars. A strip of reflective trim on each costume helps once the sun is actually down.
23. Rain Cloud Rainbow And Sunshine Costume

A rain cloud, a rainbow and sunshine is a sweet weather theme for a family with a baby or toddler. The cloud wears gray with silver rain boots and a light panel of white and gray batting, with short blue felt raindrops hanging from the edge. The rainbow wears a blue base with curved felt stripes across the chest and bright clips in the hair. Sunshine is yellow head to toe with a soft ray headpiece. Keep anything hanging above ankle height so nobody trips on it. A small umbrella, ribbon streamers and a smiling sun sign are the props.
24. Traffic Light Family Costume

A traffic light trio costs very little, because the base is the same black long sleeves and black pants on everyone. Each person gets one large felt circle on the chest in red, yellow or green, and matches their hat, sneakers and glow bracelet to it. A black foam rectangle around the circle makes the signal shape clearer. Felt circles stick poorly to cotton jersey with glue alone, so I'd stitch around the edge with a few big running stitches. Small soft signs only. Reflective tape is worth adding, since a family in head-to-toe black is hard for drivers to see.
25. Three Crayons Family Costume

Three crayons is easy to make and very easy to read. Each person wears one solid color top and pants with black felt bands at the wrists, ankles and torso. The pointed hat is a cone of flexible foam or cardstock on soft elastic. Keep it short; a tall cone gets bent in every doorway and car. Red, blue and yellow is the clearest set, though pastels work for a softer look. Add a black oval label on each shirt without any brand name. One adult can carry a painted box panel so the three look like they came out of the same pack.
26. Skeleton Family Costume

Matching skeletons are a classic, and black basics make them comfortable for a long night. Attach large, simple white felt bones or paint them on with washable fabric paint; small fiddly bones disappear in the dark. Adults can do black and white face makeup around the eyes, nose and mouth, while the child gets only a little on the nose and cheeks. Do a patch test on a child's inner arm the day before. White gloves with painted hand bones are a fun detail, and reflective white tape for the bones is a smart alternative that drivers can see. Keep it friendly for school events.
27. Vampire Family Costume

An elegant vampire family keeps to black, burgundy and deep purple. One adult wears black trousers, a white ruffled shirt, a velvet vest, a short cape and polished boots. The other wears a long burgundy dress with a black lace overlay, a dark cape and styled waves. The child wears black pants or a dress with a purple vest and a mini cape. Pale foundation, defined eyes and a berry lip, theatrical but not scary. Costume fangs are fine for adults for a few photos, but I'd skip them for children, who can't talk or eat with them in. Brooches and pendants finish it.
28. Witch Wizard And Black Cat Costume

A witch, a wizard and a black cat are three classic Halloween roles that look intentional together. The witch wears a long black or purple dress, striped tights, a pointed hat and buckled boots, with a small broom. The wizard's robe is easy to sew from a flat sheet folded in half with a head hole, then scattered with felt stars, and paired with a matching hat and yarn beard. The cat wears black leggings and a sweatshirt with ears and a tail, plus a painted nose and whiskers. For a toddler, cut the robe to tunic length so they aren't tripping on it. Keep wands and brooms light and rounded.
29. Friendly Ghost Family Costume

Three friendly ghosts is the fastest family costume I know. White hooded ponchos or oversized white tunics over pale leggings and sneakers, with scalloped hems cut above the ankle. Keep every face uncovered rather than cutting eyeholes in a sheet; eyeholes slide around and a child can't see the curb. One accessory each gives them personality: a bow tie, a hair bow, a tiny top hat. Pearly makeup and rosy cheeks. Small white pumpkin buckets. White sweatshirts go underneath on cold nights, and a baby ghost can wear white footed pajamas with a smiling face on the chest.
30. Pumpkin Patch Family Costume

Two farmers and a pumpkin is the obvious choice for a family with one small child, and it works. The farmers wear overalls, plaid shirts, straw hats, work boots and orange bandanas, with freckles and braids or relaxed ponytails. The child wears an orange sweatshirt and pants with curved felt lines, a leafy green collar and an orange beanie with a felt stem. Stuff nothing. A padded pumpkin belly looks cute but a toddler overheats in it and can't bend to pick up candy. Decorate a stroller or wagon with removable felt vines, and leave real pumpkins at home.
31. Pirate Mermaid And Parrot Costume

A pirate, a mermaid and a parrot make a bright adventure trio, especially with a toddler as the parrot. The pirate wears cropped black pants, a striped shirt, a red sash, a dark vest, a head scarf and flat boots, carrying a map and coin pouch instead of a toy weapon. The mermaid's scale-print skirt needs room to walk; a fitted tail is not trick-or-treat friendly. Add a seashell headband and aqua makeup. The parrot wears red leggings, a bright sweatshirt and layered blue and yellow felt wings sewn to the sleeves, with a feathered headband and a painted nose instead of a beak.
32. King Queen And Dragon Family Costume

A king, queen and dragon make a fairytale trio where the child gets the fun part. The king wears dark trousers, a jewel-tone tunic, a short faux-fur cape, a gold crown and boots. The queen wears a long velvet-look dress, a belt, a soft crown and flat boots under the skirt. The dragon is green sweats with a hood, soft horns, felt scales down the back and detachable wings. I'd use felt or foam crowns rather than plastic around a baby, since rigid points end up in someone's eye. A stroller dressed as a cardboard castle doubles as a rest stop.
33. Alice Mad Hatter And White Rabbit Costume

Alice, the Mad Hatter and the White Rabbit bring a lot of color to a trio. Alice wears a blue dress with a white apron, a black headband, white tights and black flats. The Hatter mixes a bright jacket, a patterned vest, cropped pants, odd socks, boots and an oversized decorated top hat, plus orange curls. An oversized hat needs a band of foam inside the brim or it slides down. The Rabbit wears white pants, a red vest, a white shirt, ears, a bow tie and a pink painted nose. Make the cardboard pocket watch light and round-edged if the child is the rabbit.
34. Astronauts And Alien Family Costume

Two astronauts and a green alien send the whole family into space. The astronauts wear white coveralls or white sweat sets with silver tape panels, mission patches, padded belts and white sneakers, plus backpacks from painted boxes and silver tubes. Silver duct tape peels on stretchy sweats, so on knit fabric I'd use iron-on silver vinyl or felt instead. The alien wears lime-green sweats, green sneakers, a headband with soft antennae and metallic green shadow. A green footed sleeper works for a baby alien. Reflective details help everyone stand out on a dark street.
35. Construction Crew Family Costume

A construction crew is the trio for a family that wants comfortable clothes and zero sewing. Jeans or cargo pants, plaid shirts or bright safety tops, work boots and reflective vests for all three, with plastic hard hats in matching colors and name badges like foreman and supervisor. Hard hats are hot and bulky on a small head, so check the fit and pad the inside band with a strip of soft fabric. A washable gray smudge on the cheeks. Foam tape measures, clipboards and an empty bucket are safe props. A wagon with yellow cardboard panels and paper wheels becomes the truck.
The Night Itself With a Little One in the Trio
Most family costumes fail at the practical moments: the car seat, the bathroom, the cold walk between houses. A few habits help.
- Do a full dress rehearsal at home the weekend before. You'll find the itchy tag and the slipping hat while there's time to fix them.
- Anything bulky on the back, like wings, packs or tails, must come off for the car seat. Straps should never sit under the harness.
- Put thermals or a plain sweatshirt under the costume rather than a coat over it, so the character still shows.
- Use face paint sparingly on children, patch test first, and bring makeup wipes in your bag.
- Add reflective tape or a glow bracelet to each person, especially for dark costumes.
Keeping the Pieces for Next Year
Sweatshirt-based costumes are worth saving. Unpin the felt pieces, store them flat in a labeled envelope, and the base clothes go back into the drawer. A younger sibling can often step into the same role next October.
Three Roles That Look Like One Family
A good trio gives each person a clear role while keeping the three visibly connected. Before you pick, think about your child's age, the weather, how far you're walking and whether anyone will spend time in a stroller or car seat. Soft accessories, comfortable shoes, breathable layers and open faces make the night easier for everyone. Your costumes don't have to match the store versions. A shared color story and a few clear details tell people what you are, and the trio your family laughs about is the one you'll enjoy wearing.
