Hot weather is where preppy clothes prove themselves, because most of them were born for it: cotton piqué polos, seersucker, linen, poplin and canvas shoes. The summer version is looser and brighter than the classic one, with polo dresses, relaxed linen separates, tennis skirts and sharp tailored shorts worn with sneakers or loafers. It still borrows the old staples, from cable knit vests to rugby stripes, but in lighter fabrics and sunnier colors. I plan summer wardrobes around trips and heat, so for each of the 35 outfits below I've noted how it handles warm days, packing and the sweat test that white cotton has to pass.

Linen, Seersucker or Poplin in Real Heat
Almost every outfit below depends on one of three cotton or linen fabrics, and they don't behave the same way once the temperature climbs. Before I build a summer capsule for a trip, I decide which of these does the heavy lifting.
- Linen is the coolest. The fibers are hollow and the weave is loose, so it lets heat out and dries quickly. The trade-off is creasing, which starts the moment you sit down.
- Seersucker is close behind. Its puckered stripes keep most of the fabric off your skin, and the texture hides wrinkles, so it's the one I trust after a day in a suitcase.
- Poplin looks the crispest but is tightly woven, so it holds a little more heat. It's best for offices, ceremonies and evenings rather than midday sun.
- Cotton piqué, the polo fabric, sits between them: breathable, structured and good at hiding sweat.
Skip polyester blends sold as easy-care for hot days. They resist creases but hold sweat against your body and start to smell faster than natural fibers.
1. Polo Shirt And Tailored Shorts Preppy Summer Outfit

A pastel polo tucked into tailored shorts is the outfit I'd build a preppy summer around. Pleat-front shorts in a cotton-linen blend breathe better than pure cotton twill and keep a sharp line. Pick a slim polo in butter yellow, mint or powder blue and roll the sleeve hems once. White leather sneakers or penny loafers with no-show socks both work, and a braided belt links top and bottom. A small saddle crossbody and tortoiseshell sunglasses finish it for a market or a rooftop lunch. Pleat-front shorts add a little volume at the hip, so if you'd rather avoid that, flat-front gives the same polish.
2. White Tennis Skirt And Sneakers Summer Preppy Look

An all-white court look built around a pleated tennis skirt is easy to copy. Tuck in a slim ribbed tank or sleeveless polo, then add white platform sneakers or retro court shoes and striped crew socks. A light zip hoodie or varsity cardigan over the shoulders adds the collegiate note. Keep jewelry to a silver chain and studs, with a nylon shoulder bag. It suits a morning clinic followed by coffee or a boardwalk afternoon. White sportswear shows sunscreen stains as yellow marks after a few washes, so I apply sunscreen early and let it absorb before dressing.
3. Linen Button-Down Shirt And Wide-Leg Trousers Outfit

An oversized linen shirt in a soft neutral with high-waisted cream wide-leg trousers is cool in real heat because air moves through linen faster than through cotton. Tuck just the front hem for shape, or wear the shirt open over a white tank. Trousers in linen blend or light cotton twill with a fluid drape avoid the bagginess pure linen gets at the knees. Woven leather slides or flat espadrilles, a slim gold chain, a straw tote and black oval sunglasses finish it. A silk scarf on the tote strap is the only extra I'd add. It's my pick for dinner outdoors on a warm evening.
4. Striped Sweater Over Shoulders With Jeans Outfit

A lightweight striped sweater over the shoulders is the preppy trick that also solves summer's biggest annoyance: freezing air conditioning. Cotton or linen-blend knit in a nautical stripe weighs almost nothing, and you can pull it on in seconds. Start with a white tank or tee and high-rise straight jeans in white or ecru. Caramel loafers or flat slingbacks, a woven belt, a canvas tote, gold hoops and cat-eye sunglasses finish it. On travel days, this is what I'd wear on the plane, because cabins run cold even when the destination is hot.
5. Cable Knit Vest With White Jeans Summer Outfit

A cable knit vest in summer sounds odd until you find one in cotton or a linen-cotton blend, which adds texture without trapping heat. Wear a cream vest over a white button-down for a scholarly look, or on its own over a tank for less fabric. High-rise white straight jeans, tan strappy sandals or cognac loafers, a structured top-handle bag, pearl studs and a tortoiseshell headband finish it for a museum day or a summer internship. Avoid acrylic vests in heat; they hold sweat against your body in a way cotton doesn't.
6. Seersucker Shorts And Tank Top Preppy Outfit

Seersucker was made for heat. The puckered weave holds most of the fabric away from your skin, so air moves and wrinkles barely show. High-waisted seersucker shorts with a smooth ribbed tank in white, navy or pale pink make a simple contrast. Woven flat sandals or white canvas sneakers, a thin navy ribbon belt, a rattan crossbody, layered gold necklaces and round sunglasses finish it. Keep a cotton cardigan for the evening breeze. For packing, seersucker is one of the few fabrics I can roll tight and wear straight out of the bag.
7. Oxford Shirt And Pleated Miniskirt Summer Look

A slightly oversized white Oxford tucked fully into a high-waisted pleated mini in khaki, navy or muted plaid is a playful summer look. Roll the sleeves to just below the elbow. White ribbed socks with saddle shoes or chunky loafers lean into the uniform feel, so I'd keep the rest of the accessories light: a slim belt, a leather backpack, pearl drops and a velvet ribbon. Oxford cloth is a bit heavy for real heat, so on very hot days I'd swap it for a cotton poplin shirt that looks the same but breathes better.
8. Polo Dress And Canvas Sneakers Preppy Outfit

A polo dress is the summer outfit I'd recommend to anyone who hates deciding what to wear. The collar and short sleeves give it polish, and the shift shape does the rest. Pick slim or slightly A-line in white, candy pink or kelly green, with white canvas sneakers or low tennis shoes. A slim belt shapes the waist, and a woven crossbody adds texture. A cap makes it casual, a silk headband makes it softer. Gold hoops and a berry lip balm finish it in minutes. Piqué polo dresses breathe better than jersey ones, and they hide sweat better too.
9. Shift Dress And Espadrille Sandals Summer Outfit

A light shift dress in a pastel or thin stripe works for almost every summer occasion because it doesn't touch much of your body. Lace-up espadrilles, flat or wedge, add a coastal note. A thin braided belt in tan or white gives shape if the dress hangs straight. A basket tote, beaded bracelets, round sunglasses and a silk scarf as a headband add color. Carry a light cardigan for the evening. It goes from a daytime bridal shower to a beach dinner. Espadrilles soften and stain when wet, so I'd pack sandals for anything near water.
10. Rugby Shirt And Denim Shorts Preppy Summer Look

A bold striped rugby shirt with denim cutoffs is the most relaxed outfit here. The thick stripes and ribbed collar give it a sporty look, and a medium-weight cotton keeps it from clinging. Tuck just the front into high-rise raw-hem shorts. White crew socks, retro sneakers in a matching color, a vintage cap and a canvas backpack make it good for a flea market or a road trip. A rugby shirt is heavier than a tee, so I'd wear it on warm days rather than very hot ones, and drape a thin crewneck sweater over your shoulders if the evening cools.
11. Gingham Top And White Denim Preppy Outfit

Gingham is the most summer-friendly print in preppy clothing. A short-sleeve or sleeveless button-up in small sky blue, red or lavender checks, tucked fully into high-rise white jeans or white denim shorts, looks fresh. A tan belt with a gold buckle, brown flat sandals or woven mules, a straw circle bag and pearl studs finish it, and cat-eye sunglasses and a coral lip add color. Drape a white cardigan over your shoulders for more polish. Gingham cotton creases less than plain cotton because the check hides small wrinkles, which makes it a smart packing choice.
12. Navy Blazer And Chino Shorts Summer Outfit

A navy blazer in summer only works if it's unlined, in cotton, linen or a stretch-cotton blend. Wear it over a white ribbed tank or slim crewneck tee with flat-front chino shorts in stone or khaki, two to three inches above the knee. Roll the blazer sleeves once. Tan driving mocs, white low-top sneakers or navy and cream woven boat shoes all suit it. A slim watch, thin necklaces and a mini flap crossbody keep it neat for a rooftop meeting or graduation party. Unlined jackets lose their shape on a hanger, so I fold them in a suitcase rather than hang them in a garment bag.
13. Pastel Sweater And Mini Skirt Preppy Look

A pastel cotton or linen-blend crewneck tucked into a high-waisted A-line mini is a sweet summer take on preppy. Lavender, buttercream or soft peach against white, khaki or light tweed works well. Ballet flats or patent Mary Janes with sheer ankle socks, a gold pendant, pearl studs, a mini top-handle bag and a velvet bow make it right for a baby shower or brunch. A sweater in summer only works in cotton or linen; I'd skip any knit with wool or acrylic in it for outdoor plans.
14. Breton Striped Tee And Capris Summer Outfit

A classic Breton striped tee is the piece I pack first for any coastal trip. The navy and white stripe works with everything. Tuck it into tailored capris in white, navy or cream that end just below the calf. Red ballet flats or tan espadrilles add color, and a red or navy ribbon belt ties the palette together. Bring a navy sweater for the sea breeze, plus a straw visor or wide-brim hat, a big canvas tote and slim gold hoops. Capris look best ending at the narrowest part of the calf; anywhere else, they shorten the leg.
15. Sweater Vest And Tailored Shorts Preppy Outfit

A lightweight V-neck sweater vest with tailored shorts is a scholarly summer look. Cream, black or a pastel over a white button-up with the sleeves rolled, or on its own over a tank. Tuck into high-waisted pleated shorts in khaki, navy or ivory. Penny loafers or lug-sole loafers with white crew socks, a thin belt, a crossbody, oval glasses and a signet ring finish it for a campus tour or a city meeting. Layering a vest over a long-sleeve shirt in real heat is too much, so I keep this one for mild days or air-conditioned offices.
16. Light Blue Oxford Shirt And White Jeans Outfit

A light blue Oxford is softer than white and pairs naturally with bright white denim. Choose a relaxed fit, roll the sleeves past the elbow, and tuck just the front into high-rise white straight or wide-leg jeans. A cognac belt and matching slides or woven mules, a canvas bucket hat, round sunglasses, thin gold chains and a straw tote finish it for brunch or an art fair. Light blue hides underarm sweat much better than pale gray or pastel pink, which is why I reach for it on hot days.
17. Navy Polo Shirt And Khaki Shorts Preppy Look

A navy piqué polo with khaki flat-front shorts is the classic summer prep combination. The textured piqué keeps the polo's shape and breathes. Tuck it into mid-rise khaki shorts with a self belt or a D-ring canvas belt, and roll the sleeves once. White sneakers or tan boat shoes, a sporty watch, aviators and a canvas backpack make it right for a golf morning, a lakeside lunch and a boat ride in one day. Navy fades in the sun over a season, so turn the polo inside out to dry.
18. Linen Matching Set And Espadrilles Summer Outfit

A matching linen set, either a short-sleeve shirt with trousers or a blouse with shorts, is the most breathable outfit here. Linen keeps you cool while still looking dressed. Oatmeal, ecru or pale sage looks luxurious in one tone. Wear the shirt open over a white tank or tucked in. Flat or low-wedge espadrilles in a matching neutral, a woven belt, a big straw tote, wooden bracelets, round sunglasses and a low bun finish it for a resort day or a winery lunch. For travel, a set gives you three outfits: together, the shirt with jeans and the bottoms with a tee.
19. Plaid Mini Skirt And Ribbed Tank Preppy Outfit

A plaid mini with a fitted ribbed tank makes a year-round skirt work in summer. The structured plaid balances the soft tank. Choose a muted taupe, navy and cream plaid and a tank in white, black or a tonal pastel, tucked in fully. Flat Mary Janes or saddle shoes with thin white socks, a cropped cardigan over the shoulders, a slim headband, a small crossbody and silver jewelry finish it for a gallery opening or campus event. Wool plaid is too warm for summer, so I'd check the label for cotton or a cotton blend.
20. Trench Coat And Chino Shorts Summer Preppy Look

A lightweight trench over chino shorts sounds strange, but it's my answer to overcast summer days and long travel days. Choose a khaki or stone trench in fine cotton, worn open and unbelted, over a white crewneck tee or tank. Flat-front chino shorts in a matching neutral keep the proportions even. Roll the trench sleeves to the elbows. Retro sneakers with color or white leather trainers, a canvas tote, dark round sunglasses and a thin scarf on the tote strap complete it. A thin cotton trench also packs flat and serves as a rain layer.
21. Button-Up Shirt With Sweater Draped Shoulders Outfit

A cotton button-up with a sweater draped over the shoulders is preppy's most recognizable styling. White or pastel, sleeves rolled to mid-forearm, tucked into tailored shorts or white jeans. The sweater is a fine-gauge crewneck in navy, coral or yellow, loosely tied or just draped. Leather sandals or canvas sneakers, a structured tote, a gold chain and tortoiseshell sunglasses finish it for a vineyard tour or coastal dinner. The sweater becomes useful once the sun goes down. Use cotton for the shoulder sweater; cashmere pills where it rubs against a tote strap.
22. Cream Wide-Leg Pants And Striped Top Outfit

Cream high-waisted wide-leg trousers that skim the floor make your legs look longer and let air in around them. Pair them with a navy and white Breton boat-neck or a slim stripe tee, tucked in fully. A thin tan belt and jute wedge espadrilles keep the palette neutral. A striped canvas tote, amber sunglasses and a silk scarf at the neck or ponytail finish it for a summer office day or an evening concert. Floor-length cream trousers pick up dirt at the hem fast on city streets, so I'd hem them to clear the ground in your wedges.
23. Argyle Sweater Vest And White Jeans Preppy Outfit

Argyle on a cotton vest gives a summer outfit collegiate charm. Choose a sleeveless knit with a diamond argyle pattern in navy, burgundy and cream, layered over a white button-down with the collar showing or over a white tee for a more modern look. Tuck into high-waisted white straight jeans just above the ankle. Two-tone oxfords or black patent loafers with no-show socks, a leather satchel, a signet ring and a ribbon on a low ponytail finish it for a day at the library. Argyle draws the eye to the torso, so I keep everything below it plain.
24. White Midi Dress And Brown Leather Accessories Outfit

A white midi in cotton poplin or eyelet is the summer dress I'd pack for any trip, because accessories change it completely. Look for puff sleeves, pin tucks or a scalloped hem. Add a slim brown belt, brown flat sandals or woven block heels, and a chocolate saddle bag or doctor bag. A gold chain, tortoiseshell hoops and a silk headband finish it, with a beige linen blazer over the shoulders for evening. It suits a bridal shower or rehearsal dinner. Check white cotton in daylight before you buy; if you can see your hand through it, you'll need a slip.
25. Pastel Polo Shirt And White Denim Summer Look

A pastel polo with white denim is preppy summer at its simplest. Lilac, butter yellow or powder pink add color without being loud. Tuck it fully into high-waisted white straight jeans, or white denim shorts on hotter days. White low-top sneakers or tan flat sandals, a slim belt with gold hardware, a rattan bag, gold hoops, round sunglasses and an anklet finish it for an outdoor lunch or errands. Pastel and white together show every grass stain, so I keep this one for paved plans rather than picnics.
26. Varsity Jacket And Pleated Tennis Skirt Outfit

A lightweight varsity jacket over a pleated tennis skirt mixes sporty and feminine prep. Choose cotton or satin in a color-block design with striped collar and cuffs, over a cropped white tee or slim tank. The skirt in white, cream or navy adds swing. White crew socks, retro sneakers or platform tennis shoes, a nylon shoulder bag, a collegiate cap and a few beaded bracelets finish it for a music festival or campus event. A wool varsity jacket is far too hot for summer; cotton or satin is what makes this work.
27. Cropped Cable Knit And Tailored Skort Summer Outfit

A cropped cable knit with a tailored skort plays with proportion. The sweater should end right at the waistband of a high-waisted skort, or show a small strip of skin. Blush pink or seafoam with an ivory, beige or light gray skort works well. The built-in shorts give coverage while the front panel looks like a mini. White sneakers or chunky loafers, a mini satchel, gold jewelry, oval sunglasses and a low ponytail finish it for a brunch date or museum. A skort is the most practical travel bottom I know, because you can sit on stone steps and climb onto a boat without thinking.
28. Pinstripe Blazer And Bermuda Shorts Preppy Look

A pinstripe blazer with Bermuda shorts brings menswear tailoring into summer. Choose an unlined or half-lined cotton-linen blazer with a thin navy or gray stripe, over a white tank or crewneck tee. Matching or tonal Bermudas ending just above the knee make one long line. Flat mules or slides, a thin belt, a small clutch, gold necklaces, dark sunglasses and a low bun finish it for a summer networking event or gallery opening. Vertical pinstripes make you look taller, which balances the shorter leg of Bermudas.
29. Oversized Oxford Shirt And Bike Shorts Outfit

An oversized Oxford over fitted bike shorts is the most comfortable outfit on this list. The roomy shirt covers you and lets air in, and the shorts keep things neat underneath. Light blue or white with some body to the cotton, top buttons open, sleeves rolled. Black or navy bike shorts ending mid-thigh, white crew socks and chunky retro sneakers, a cap, a nylon sling bag and gold studs finish it. I'd wear this on a long travel day, because bike shorts stop thighs from chafing in heat.
30. Striped Shirt Dress And Straw Hat Summer Outfit

A striped shirt dress is a single piece that does the whole job. Midi or knee-length in blue and white or multicolor stripes, with the self-tie belt or a tan leather belt for contrast. Woven flat sandals or cork wedges, a wide straw hat for real sun protection, a big straw tote, thin gold bangles, round sunglasses and a pink lip make it right for a beach brunch or a resort afternoon. Vertical stripes make you look taller; horizontal stripes add width. I'd choose vertical if you're petite.
31. Pleated Midi Skirt And Tank Top Preppy Outfit

A flowy pleated midi in emerald, sapphire or a soft pastel catches the breeze and moves well. Tuck in a white ribbed tank or fitted sleeveless knit, and add a slim metallic or neutral belt. Strappy sandals with a small block heel, a top-handle bag and pearl drops make it polished enough for a daytime wedding or graduation. Keep a light cardigan in a matching color for air-conditioned rooms. Lightweight pleated skirts lift in wind, so I'd pick one with a lining or a heavier pleat for outdoor events.
32. Boyfriend Button-Down Shirt And Cutoff Jeans Look

An oversized boyfriend-fit button-down shirt taken from the menswear section is the coolest summer cover-up I know. Choose striped or plain light blue poplin. Wear it open over a white tank or swimsuit, or buttoned up with a front tuck into high-rise denim cutoffs. Leather flip-flops or flat gladiators, a canvas tote, aviators, a low bun, a beaded anklet and thin rings finish it for a beach day or a bike ride on the boardwalk. Poplin shirts also double as sun cover at the beach, which saves packing a separate cover-up.
33. Ribbed Sweater Vest And Linen Trousers Summer Outfit

A fine ribbed sweater vest in a neutral gives texture without adding heat. Wear it buttoned up on its own or over a thin white tee. Pair it with high-waisted linen trousers in sand, ivory or soft olive, wide or straight, both of which let air move. Flat sandals or backless woven loafers, a slim belt, a bucket bag, gold jewelry, cat-eye sunglasses and a neat bun finish it for a gallery morning and a rooftop dinner. A vest worn alone needs to fit at the armholes; too loose and your bra shows from the side.
34. Seersucker Blazer Over Sundress Preppy Outfit

A seersucker blazer over a sundress makes a summer outfit feel dressed for an occasion. Choose blue and white stripes or a pastel solid. Underneath, a simple slip dress or A-line sundress in white, pale yellow or navy. The structured jacket over a soft dress is a classic prep contrast. Woven wedge espadrilles or low block heels, a raffia clutch, pearl studs, a silk headband and a coral lip finish it for a daytime summer wedding or garden party. The blazer can come off for photos and go back on when the evening cools.
35. Poplin Set And Platform Sneakers Summer Look

A matching poplin set of short-sleeve shirt and relaxed shorts is a clean one-color base. Cotton poplin feels crisp but breathes. White, light blue or a pastel stripe all work. Wear the shirt buttoned and tucked for a tailored look or open over a tank for a casual one. White retro platform sneakers with striped crew socks, a nylon crossbody, a cap, oval sunglasses, a silver chain and small hoops make it ready for a travel day or a city walk. Poplin wrinkles more than seersucker, so I hang it in the bathroom while showering to steam out creases.
Packing a Week of Prep in a Carry-On
Because so many of these outfits share pieces, a preppy summer wardrobe packs small. For a week in warm weather, this is roughly what I'd fit in a carry-on:
- Bottoms: white jeans, tailored shorts in khaki, one pleated or tennis skirt and one pair of linen trousers.
- Tops: a Breton tee, a polo, a white Oxford or poplin shirt, a ribbed tank and one gingham blouse.
- One dress: a polo dress or white midi, which covers the dressier night.
- Layers: a thin cotton sweater for shoulders and planes, and an unlined blazer or light trench if you expect cool evenings.
- Shoes: white sneakers, loafers or espadrilles, and one flat sandal. Three pairs is the maximum I'd allow.
Keep the palette to navy, white, khaki and one accent color, and nearly every top works with every bottom. Roll the knits and seersucker; fold the blazer and the poplin shirt flat on top.
Sweat Marks, Sunscreen and White Cotton
Whites carry a lot of these looks, and summer is hard on them. Yellow underarm marks come from the aluminum in antiperspirant mixing with sweat, so letting it dry fully before dressing helps more than any wash. Some sunscreen ingredients turn orange or yellow on white fabric in hard water, so rub it in well and wait a few minutes. Wash whites in cool water soon after wearing, rather than letting sweat sit in them for days.
One Suitcase, a Whole Summer of Prep
Summer prep is classic pieces in lighter fabrics, brighter colors and easier fits. From an Oxford with tailored shorts to a tennis skirt and varsity jacket, each outfit here gives you a full look so you don't have to think about it. Most of them share the same handful of pieces, which is the real reason to dress this way in heat: linen separates, cotton knits, a Breton tee, white jeans and a pair of leather sandals cover most of a season, and most of a suitcase too. Start there and add color as you go.
