Anime characters are drawn to be read at a glance, which is good news for anyone building one: a hair color, a silhouette and two or three signature details usually carry the whole character. Very few of the looks below need advanced sewing or armor. Thrifted shirts, altered basics, simple craft materials and a well-styled wig get you most of the way. When I put a cosplay together, I match the main garments first, then sort out shoes I can stand in all day, then makeup, and only then one light prop. The 40 characters here run from classic heroes and magical girls to students, fantasy travelers and newer favorites, across genders, body types and experience levels, for a convention weekend or a Halloween party.

Wigs Carry Most of the Character
In anime, hair is often the only thing separating two characters in nearly identical school uniforms, so I put the wig ahead of everything else in the budget. A cheap wig in the right color and cut beats an expensive one in the wrong shape.
Before you style it
- Check the label for heat-resistant fiber. If it isn't listed, keep curling irons and straighteners away completely, because ordinary synthetic fiber melts.
- Put the wig on a foam head pinned to a stand, never your own head, for cutting and spiking.
- Cut bangs a little longer than you want and trim upward in small snips; fiber springs up as it settles.
- Wear a wig cap and a few bobby pins through the cap and wig at the crown so the whole thing doesn't slide back by afternoon.
Spikes that hold
Spiky hair is built in layers. I tease a small section at the root, spray it, shape it with my fingers and let it dry before starting the next. Rushing it with one heavy coat of spray leaves the spikes wet, heavy and droopy. Short, choppy styles hold better with a little matte wax worked through the tips. Expect the finished wig to feel stiff; that's normal, and it will soften once you brush it out at the end of the weekend.
1. Sailor Moon Cosplay With Sailor Uniform

This uniform is all clean color blocking, so the work is in crisp edges rather than anything clever. A white bodysuit or fitted top with a blue sailor collar, a blue skirt and an oversized red chest bow make the core, with a second bow at the back and red knee-high boots. The bows are where cheap versions fall down. I interface both layers so they hold their shape instead of drooping by lunchtime. The hair is the other half of the character: two high buns with long flowing pigtails take far more fiber than most single wigs have, so many people build the buns over foam doughnuts and clip in extra ponytails. Rosy cheeks, defined lashes and a soft pink lip, plus a gold tiara and red hair accents. A crescent wand or a plush black cat is a light prop for photos and group shots.
2. Naruto Uzumaki Cosplay With Orange Jumpsuit

Orange is the whole story with Naruto, so get the shade right before anything else; an orange that leans yellow or red looks wrong next to anyone else in the series. An orange zip-front jumpsuit works, or orange joggers with a matching jacket that has black or navy panels. Open-toe ninja sandals are accurate, but for a long day on your feet I'd switch to supportive black sneakers. Spiky blond wigs arrive flat, so I tease each spike at the root and lock it with strong hairspray, one section at a time. A metal-look forehead band sets the theme. Three fine whisker marks on each cheek in skin-safe eyeliner, with the rest of the face natural. A small scroll or a ramen cup prop adds personality without filling your hands.
3. Nezuko Kamado Cosplay With Pink Kimono

Layers give Nezuko her color, and they also make her warm enough for a cold October night. Start with a pink kimono in a geometric print and wrap it with a red-and-white checkered obi, then add the dark brown robe on top and black wraps with pink cords on the lower legs. One detail people miss: a kimono always wraps left side over right, and getting it backward is the first thing any fan will notice. Flat brown sandals keep it walkable. Synthetic wigs won't take ordinary hair dye, so buy the long black wig with the warm orange tips already blended, and sweep a small section back with a pink ribbon. Rosy pink eye makeup, soft brows and a neutral lip. Rather than covering your mouth all day, carry the green bamboo piece or wear it loosely around the neck for photos.
4. Tanjiro Kamado Cosplay With Checkered Haori

The green-and-black checkered haori is what everyone recognizes, so that is the piece worth sewing well. A haori is a loose, straight-cut jacket, which makes it one of the friendlier garments for a first sewing project; the only fussy part is matching the checks at the center back seam. Wear it over a dark buttoned uniform with loose trousers and white leg wraps. Flat black sandals or cushioned black slip-ons keep the traditional shape. Choose a short burgundy wig with tousled layers, pushed away from the forehead. The hanafuda earrings can be lightweight card stock or thin acrylic, which is far kinder on your ears than anything heavy. Draw the forehead mark with red and brown face makeup. A wooden box-shaped backpack, a checkered pouch or a small fox mask at your side finishes the character.
5. Monkey D. Luffy Cosplay With Red Vest

If you want an anime costume made from very plain pieces, this is it: an open red vest, knee-length blue shorts and a yellow sash tied at the waist. Brown sandals with secure straps are accurate, and brown sneakers are fine if you need support. A short, messy black wig works, or tousle dark hair of your own with styling spray. Everything rides on the straw hat with its red band. I'd buy a real straw hat, sew on a red grosgrain band and add a thin cord, since the character wears his hat on one too; it saves the hat every time a door opens onto a windy street. Draw the small scar beneath one eye with a fine line of skin-safe makeup. An oversized faux-food prop and a drawstring bag are the only extras you need.
6. Nami Cosplay With Green Bikini Top And Jeans

The early-series look is simple and easy to adjust for your own comfort level. Pair a green bikini-style top with high-waisted blue jeans or denim capris. A fitted green tank top can replace the swim top and keeps the same color story, which matters more than the cut. Brown sandals or low ankle boots work underneath. Bob wigs flip out at the ends straight from the bag; I steam them gently and smooth the ends inward with a little spray so the shape sits neatly with a side part. Warm peach makeup, subtle liner and a coral lip. For the shoulder mark, skip anything permanent and use a temporary decal or a printed costume sleeve. A paper map and a citrus-shaped purse point straight at the navigator.
7. Roronoa Zoro Cosplay With Green Robe

You don't need armor or anything awkward to build this one. A white T-shirt, black trousers and a long green robe held with a wide green waist sash make the base. Black lace-up boots give better support than traditional sandals and still suit the rugged shape. A short moss-green wig with upright texture needs a little wax worked between your fingertips to separate the spikes; hairspray alone tends to clump short fiber. Draw the scar line with subtle makeup rather than a raised prosthetic. Three gold-tone earrings on one ear can be clip-ons. Many events restrict replica swords, so I'd leave them home and tie a folded green bandana around the upper arm, which fans recognize just as well.
8. Yor Forger Cosplay With Black Evening Dress

Yor's outfit is eveningwear first and anime second, which means fit matters more than crafting. Choose a sleeveless black midi dress with a fitted bodice, a high neckline and a flowing skirt. The gold trim can be fabric tape for a quick version, but I'd sew on gold ribbon or braid if you plan to wear it more than once; tape lifts at the curves after a few hours of movement. Black thigh-high socks slip down on most legs, so look for pairs with silicone grip bands at the top. Black ankle-strap heels are accurate, and block heels or pointed flats are kinder for a long day. A long black wig with two low side sections and a straight fringe, a gold rose headband, matching drop earrings, soft red eye makeup and a deep red lip. A red rose or a gold hairpin is a safe prop.
9. Anya Forger Cosplay With Black School Dress

Anya's school outfit works for children, teens or adults, as long as the fit suits the wearer's age. Use a modest black A-line dress with long sleeves, gold edging and a crisp white collar, with white knee socks and sturdy black Mary Janes. The two hair cones are the detail that names her. I make them from small foam cones covered in black fabric, edged with gold ribbon and glued to snap clips, so they sit firmly in the pink bob wig and come out when it's time to sleep in the car. Keep makeup very light, just pink blush, and skip liner on young children. A structured black school bag reinforces the uniform. A plush dog or a peanut-shaped pouch makes her easy to spot in photos.
10. Loid Forger Cosplay With Green Suit

Polished tailoring carries this costume, which suits anyone who would rather wear a good suit than build a fantasy piece. Start with a forest-green three-piece suit, a white dress shirt and a red tie. If a full suit is hard to find, a thrifted green blazer with matching trousers and a fitted vest gets very close; take the blazer to a tailor or pin the sleeves, because a sleeve that covers your knuckles ruins the spy look faster than the wrong shade of green. Brown lace-up dress shoes with cushioned insoles help during long events. A short blond wig styled back with one loose section over the forehead. Keep makeup understated with matte skin and lightly strengthened brows. Black leather-look gloves, a gold lapel pin and a folded newspaper suit the role without any restricted accessories.
11. Power Cosplay With White Shirt And Black Tie

A slightly oversized white button-down, a black necktie and tailored black pants are all the clothing Power needs. Tuck the shirt loosely at the front to capture her slouch. Black loafers or low boots finish the base. The two red horns are the part that has to stay put. Rather than gluing them to the wig, I stitch each horn to a small comb or snap clip and anchor it into the wig cap near the crown, so they don't swivel when you turn your head. A long strawberry-blond wig with choppy bangs. Colored contact lenses are optional and should only come from a source that fits them properly; warm gold eye shadow with sharp red liner gives a similar effect with none of the risk. A plush cat or a small shoulder bag adds the finishing note.
12. Denji Cosplay With White Shirt And Rolled Sleeves

Denji is a strong last-minute choice because nearly everything is reusable clothing. Pair a white button-down shirt with black trousers and a slim black tie, then roll the sleeves unevenly and leave the collar loose. The untidiness should look deliberate, so roll the sleeves before you leave home and pin them inside the cuff with a small safety pin so they don't unroll by noon. Black sneakers or lace-up work shoes for crowded halls. A shaggy blond wig with long, separated bangs needs matte paste rather than shiny spray, or it looks plastic in flash photos. Lightly shadowed under-eyes and natural brows are enough makeup. Skip anything mechanical or sharp and carry a small orange dog plush with a top handle or a name badge.
13. Marin Kitagawa Cosplay With School Uniform

Marin is a fun one for a sewist to wear, since the character spends much of her own story making costumes. Start with a white button-down shirt, a blue plaid pleated skirt, a striped navy tie and a fitted navy cardigan worn loosely around the waist or shoulders. Dark crew socks and brown loafers, with cushioned versions if you'll walk all day. The long blond wig with pale pink ends and side bangs should stay straight and glossy; brush it with a wide-tooth comb from the tips upward, never from the root, or synthetic fiber tangles. Her makeup is more done than a standard school look, with pink shadow, winged liner and glossy lips. Clip-on ear cuffs, a pink phone case or a sewing-pattern envelope fits her personality.
14. Gojo Satoru Cosplay With Black Uniform

A simple black uniform can still pull every eye in a room, as long as the white hair is right. Wear a high-collar black jacket with matching slim or straight-leg pants, and black ankle boots or sneakers that disappear under the hem. A short white wig is essential. Cut it into uneven layers and lift the crown with strong spray, working with the wig on a head form, since spiking it on your own head takes three times as long. For the blindfold, I use a black fabric with a fine mesh you can see through, and it should still lift off easily the moment you need full vision on stairs or in crowds. Round dark glasses are the alternative. Cool, clean makeup with pale blue shadow, and a bag of colorful sweets as the prop.
15. Nobara Kugisaki Cosplay With Navy Uniform

Structure and comfort sit side by side in Nobara's uniform. Begin with a navy buttoned jacket and a matching knee-length skirt, ideally in a fabric with a little stretch so you can move and sit. Black tights or knee socks, with brown loafers or low-heeled ankle boots. Her short auburn bob has side-swept bangs and lightly curled ends; curl synthetic fiber with steam or a low-heat tool only if the wig is labeled heat-resistant, and test one hidden strand first because regular fiber melts. Warm brown eye shadow, peach blush and a rose lip. A narrow tan belt at the waist. Instead of tool props, carry a straw doll or a small floral pouch, which keeps the reference and avoids trouble with event rules.
16. Yuji Itadori Cosplay With Red Hood

Bright red and pink against dark navy is what makes Yuji stand out. Choose a dark navy jacket and matching pants, then add the red hood. I make the hood as a separate piece that buttons inside the collar, which is easier than altering a jacket and lets you wash it on its own. Red high-tops echo the hood and stay comfortable through a long day. A short pink wig gets styled into chunky upward sections with the sides kept close to the head; trimming the sides is what stops it looking like a pink helmet. Energetic, natural makeup with defined brows. A small red backpack carries essentials, and a regular candy bag stands in for the more unsettling candy reference.
17. Megumi Fushiguro Cosplay With Navy Jacket

The hair is the costume here, and the uniform barely needs anything. A structured navy high-collar jacket, matching straight-leg pants and black ankle boots or streamlined sneakers are enough. For the wig, look for deep black hair long enough to form sharp spikes in several directions. Spiky styles get heavy once they're loaded with spray, so build the shape in thin layers, letting each one dry, and the wig stays wearable for a full day. Clean matte skin, slightly darkened brows and soft gray shadow under the eyes. A white dog plush, a black one, or both, are the best nod to his summons. A small navy belt bag holds your things without spoiling the outline.
18. Ochaco Uraraka Cosplay With Hero Suit

Her pink-and-black hero suit is cheerful and easy to soften into something you can wear all day. Use a long-sleeve black unitard, or a fitted top with black leggings, as the base. Foam doesn't stretch, so on a stretchy unitard I'd cut the pink and white panels from felt or a matte stretch fabric and stitch them on, saving foam for the round wrist cuffs where it doesn't need to bend. Pink-and-white platform boots or sneakers with removable covers. The short chestnut bob should curve in at the jaw with two longer pieces framing the face. Rosy blush, brown liner and tiny white highlights near the eyes. Pink fingertip gloves and a clear bubble purse keep the floating theme without heavy pieces.
19. Deku Cosplay With Green Hero Suit

Deku's green hero suit simplifies well without losing the colors that identify him. Begin with a dark green athletic jumpsuit, or a fitted green jacket with matching joggers, and add black knee panels, red belt accents, white gloves and red high-top shoes. The cartoonish red boots are often made as lightweight foam covers over ordinary sneakers, which keeps you in real shoes underneath. Style a short dark green wig into messy, separated curls that lift at the crown. Dot freckles across both cheeks with brown eyeliner, then press a little powder over them so they don't smear. A gray neck guard finishes the layered silhouette, and a hero notebook makes a fitting prop for this character.
20. Bakugo Cosplay With Black And Orange Hero Suit

Black, orange and green are the palette, and flexible materials keep it wearable. Wear a sleeveless black top over fitted black pants, then build the orange X-shaped harness from wide elastic so it moves with you; rigid straps dig into the shoulders within an hour. Green fabric around the waist gives the second color block. Black combat-style boots with orange laces or supportive high-tops work. The ash-blond wig needs dramatic spikes, and strong spray with a little wig glue at the tips will hold them, though the glue makes the wig hard to restyle later. A black eye mask with rounded edges and warm brown contouring. Soft foam forearm cuffs suggest the gauntlets without the bulk.
21. Mikasa Ackerman Cosplay With Survey Uniform

Mikasa's uniform is a practical mix of fitted pieces and military structure. Begin with a white button-down shirt, a cropped brown jacket, tan trousers and a brown wrap skirt or hip panel. The harness straps are what sell it, and they're also what hurts if you get them wrong. I cut them from flat elastic or soft webbing and sit down in them before finishing, adjusting until the thigh straps don't cut in when you bend. Knee-high brown boots, with flat riding boots for long days. A short black bob with a side part and the deep red scarf around the neck. Straight brows, soft gray liner and natural lips. A brown satchel or a wing-emblem patch is a recognizable last touch.
22. Levi Ackerman Cosplay With Brown Jacket

Precise tailoring and a neutral palette are the appeal here. Wear a crisp white shirt with fitted white or tan pants, a cropped brown jacket and a dark green cape. Secure brown elastic straps over the torso and legs, checking that you can sit and walk comfortably in them. Flat brown knee boots keep it clean. The wig is an undercut with a longer center section and a sharp part; I'd trim the sides on a head form a little at a time, since you can't put fiber back once it's cut. Cool contour under the cheekbones and subtle gray around the eyes. A white cleaning cloth or a small teacup gets a laugh from anyone who knows the character, and both are light and public-friendly.
23. Hinata Hyuga Cosplay With Lavender Hoodie

Hinata is soft, comfortable and a good first cosplay. Start with a pale lavender zip-front hoodie with cream or white sleeve panels, then add navy cropped pants and beige wraps around the lower legs. Leg wraps loosen as you walk, so I sew a strip of hook-and-loop tape at each end instead of tying them. Dark open-toe sandals give the classic shape, and navy slip-ons are an easy swap. A long blue-black wig with straight bangs and smooth layers around the face. You never need pale contact lenses for her; lavender-gray eye shadow with softly defined lashes suggests the gaze well enough. A pink balm on the lips, and a leaf-emblem pouch to carry.
24. Sakura Haruno Cosplay With Red Tunic

Clean color blocking makes this tunic easy to tailor to many body types. Select a sleeveless red tunic or knee-length dress with the white circle accents, and layer fitted black shorts underneath so you can move and sit freely. Add pink elbow sleeves, black gloves and dark ankle sandals or black sneakers. A short pastel-pink wig with smooth layers around the jaw, and the red headband tied across the crown. The diamond on the forehead looks neatest drawn with a stencil and washable purple face paint, then set with powder so it doesn't shift when you sweat. Green eye makeup and pink blush. A tan hip pouch or a medical notebook suits her better than battle gear.
25. Kakashi Hatake Cosplay With Green Vest

The silhouette comes from easy-to-find pieces: a dark navy long-sleeve shirt and matching pants under a padded olive-green utility vest, with navy gloves, a small thigh pouch and black boots or high-top sneakers. The silver-gray wig needs strong upward spikes and a slightly longer fringe. Two things can affect how you see and breathe. Tilt the forehead band over one eye only as far as you can still judge stairs, and choose a thin, breathable knit for the face covering so it sits loosely and pulls down easily for water. Subtle gray eye shadow and defined brows for the visible part of the face. A small orange paperback prop is the joke fans will spot first.
26. Inosuke Hashibira Cosplay With Fur Waist Wrap

Inosuke adapts into a fully covered version without losing his wild energy. Wear a fitted skin-tone or gray long-sleeve top with loose dark pants. Wrap shaggy faux fur around the waist and lower legs, and cut it from the back with small snips through the backing so the long pile stays intact and doesn't shed across the floor. Flat dark sandals or rugged brown boots. A short blue-black wig with choppy ends and soft bangs. Blue-gray eye makeup and strong brows play up the expression. A full boar head blocks your view and gets very hot, so I'd wear a lightweight boar hood pushed up on top of the head instead. A brown belt pouch holds essentials.
27. Zenitsu Agatsuma Cosplay With Yellow Haori

The bright yellow-orange haori makes Zenitsu easy to spot in any crowd. Start with a black buttoned uniform and loose black trousers, then layer the haori on top with its small white triangles. I paint the triangles with fabric paint rather than using heat-transfer vinyl, because vinyl stiffens a light fabric and stops the haori moving the way it should. Wrap the lower legs in white fabric, and wear yellow sandals or white sneakers with yellow laces. A short golden wig cut into blunt, triangular layers around the face, with warm orange eye shadow and peach blush. A small sparrow plush or a patterned drawstring bag beats a battle prop, and the light haori swings nicely in walking photos.
28. Kiki Cosplay With Navy Dress And Red Bow

Kiki is about as easy as cosplay gets, and most of it may already be in your closet. Choose a modest navy A-line dress with short sleeves and a softly flared knee-length skirt, with red flats, Mary Janes or cushioned red sneakers. The big red bow is her signature, and a floppy one ruins the effect. I make it from stiffened fabric or interface it, then sew it to a headband so it sits at the crown without slipping. A short black bob with natural-looking ends. Pink cheeks, brown mascara and a sheer lip. A woven basket lined with a white cloth and a black cat plush tucked inside. A household broom is great for photos, but check the event's rules on long props first.
29. Howl Cosplay With Blue Jacket And Black Pants

Howl suits anyone who enjoys layered fabric and a fair amount of jewelry. Begin with a loose white blouse with a high collar and full sleeves, then slim black trousers and a cropped blue jacket or capelet with pink diamond shapes and gold edging. I'd appliqué the diamonds rather than paint them, since appliqué keeps the fabric soft and catches the light the way the drawn jacket does. Black pointed boots or low-heeled ankle boots. A chin-length blond wig with a center part and face-framing layers. Green drop earrings, a blue pendant and a few rings. Luminous skin, soft taupe shadow and a muted rose lip. A folded paper bird or a small star charm is the right size for his kind of magic.
30. Sophie Hatter Cosplay With Blue Dress

Sophie's blue dress is modest and comfortable for a full day. Select a long-sleeve dusty blue dress with a high neckline, fitted waist and ankle-length skirt, and add a white apron for the workshop version. Black lace-up boots or brown low heels go underneath. An ankle-length skirt catches on escalators and stairs, so I hem it just above the ankle bone even when the drawing shows it longer. A long silver-gray wig braided loosely down the back gives you her older look, and a light brown braid her younger one. Softly flushed cheeks, natural brows and a muted pink lip. A ribbon at the neck, a sewing basket, and a small flame-shaped plush for the fire demon.
31. Kaguya Shinomiya Cosplay With Black School Uniform

Tailoring does more for this costume than crafting ever could. Wear a black long-sleeve dress with a fitted bodice, a white sailor collar and a red ribbon at the neckline, with the skirt falling around the knee. Black knee socks or tights and polished black loafers. The long black wig needs straight lengths and blunt bangs; trim the bangs a little longer than you want, because synthetic fiber springs up shorter once it settles. Tie a red ribbon at the back. Even foundation, thin black liner, rosy cheeks and a soft red lip. Carry a black school satchel or a red folding fan. Pearl-like earrings and a slim wristwatch suit the wealthy student without looking overdressed.
32. Chika Fujiwara Cosplay With Pink Wig

Chika is cheerful and very easy to coordinate with a friend dressed as someone else from the same school. Begin with a black school dress with a white sailor collar and a bright red neck ribbon, a softly pleated knee-length skirt, black tights and brown loafers. The shoulder-length pale pink wig has straight bangs and a black bow near the top. Pastel wigs show every bit of grime, so I store them in a bag and keep makeup off the fringe by setting the face with powder before the wig goes on. Pink shadow, peach blush and a glossy rose lip. A small board-game box makes a fun prop, and a school bag with a removable charm holds your things.
33. Misa Amane Cosplay With Gothic Black Dress

Misa's gothic look can be dramatic and still tasteful in public. Choose a black knee-length dress with lace sleeves, corset-style seaming and a layered skirt, with opaque black tights, platform ankle boots and fingerless lace gloves. Blonde pigtails are heavy on a single wig, so I secure each one with a hidden elastic and a couple of bobby pins through the wig cap before tying the black ribbons over the top. Smoky gray shadow, defined lashes, cool pink blush and berry lipstick. Focus on fashion details instead of occult accessories: a black choker, a cross-free silver pendant, a studded belt. A plain black notebook or a red apple purse lets fans place her straight away.
34. Light Yagami Cosplay With Brown Suit

Light's academic wardrobe is one of the easiest anime looks to build from thrift-store clothing. Wear a tan or medium-brown suit with a white dress shirt and a bright red tie, with a matching belt and polished brown dress shoes. A medium-length light brown wig with layered bangs sweeping across the forehead. Keep makeup neat with matte skin, defined brows and a gentle contour. A silver-tone watch and a black notebook with a completely plain cover are the props that tell the story. This is the costume where an iron matters most: press every garment, including a sharp crease down the trousers, because a wrinkled suit turns the character into someone else entirely.
35. Shoto Todoroki Cosplay With Blue Hero Uniform

Sharp tailoring and a split-color head of hair define this one. Begin with a structured navy jumpsuit or a high-neck blue jacket with matching pants, then add a white utility vest, a silver-gray belt and white boots or high-top sneakers. The wig should be evenly divided white and deep red. Ready-made split wigs exist, and they're far easier than sewing two wigs together, though you'll want to check the parting is truly down the center before trimming the layers. Paint the red mark around one eye with soft, washable makeup and blend the edges. Keep the other side cool with pale gray shadow. Red-and-blue fabric streamers make a safe, moving prop for photos.
36. Bulma Cosplay With Pink Dress And Blue Hair

Her early pink outfit is a friendly first cosplay. Select a short-sleeve pink shirt-dress or an oversized pink tunic over fitted lavender shorts, then add a purple neck scarf, blue socks and white sneakers with red accents. The short turquoise wig with straight bangs is the main visual feature, so spend your money there rather than on the dress. Bright blue liner, peach blush and glossy pink lipstick give a retro feel. For the letter on the white cap, I cut it from felt and attach it with a few stitches so the cap can go back to normal afterward. A brown utility belt and a cardboard radar prop suit the inventor without elaborate building.
37. Ash Ketchum Cosplay With Blue Vest

Ash's trainer outfit is casual and easy to move in. Layer a blue vest over a white short-sleeve shirt, then add relaxed blue jeans, green fingerless gloves and red-and-white sneakers that can handle a full day. Wear a short messy black wig under the red-and-white cap with its green emblem. A cap squashes wig fiber flat, so I pull a few pieces out at the sides and back after it's on and spray just those. Two small angled cheek marks in brown liner if you like. The yellow plush sitting on one shoulder is what fans spot first; a safety pin through the plush and your vest keeps it from tumbling off. A ball-shaped accessory on the belt finishes it.
38. Misty Cosplay With Yellow Tank Top

Misty's sporty outfit uses summer basics, so it's comfortable in a warm, crowded room. Pair a bright yellow tank top with high-waisted denim shorts and red suspenders, wearing a white fitted tee underneath or choosing longer cuffed shorts if you want more coverage. Suspenders slide off narrow shoulders, which is why I'd cross them at the back or sew a small strap between them. Red-and-white sneakers and white ankle socks. An orange wig in a short side ponytail held with a blue elastic. Warm freckles, orange-toned blush and coral lip balm. A small yellow creature plush, a blue water bottle and a compact blue backpack keep it practical.
39. Cardcaptor Sakura Cosplay With Pink Dress

Layered skirts and small accessories make this magical outfit a lovely sewing project. Choose a pale pink dress with a fitted bodice, puff sleeves and a full knee-length skirt over a soft petticoat. A tulle petticoat gives the bell shape, but line its waistband with soft cotton or it scratches through a thin dress all day. Add white ruffled trim, burgundy bows, white gloves and white knee socks, with pink Mary Janes or cushioned pink flats. A short chestnut wig with curved bangs and two small side sections tied with matching ribbons. Sparkling pink shadow, rosy blush and a glossy lip. A winged beret or bow headpiece, plus a star-topped wand made from lightweight foam.
40. Frieren Cosplay With White Cape

Frieren's outfit is elegant layering with no heavy armor at all. Begin with a white long-sleeve tunic dress with gold trim and a short pleated skirt, black tights, brown belts and tall black boots with low heels. The cropped white cape with gold details should be removable for warm rooms. A long silver-white wig in two low pigtails with straight bangs. Prosthetic ear tips go on with skin-safe adhesive, and I'd patch-test that adhesive on the inside of your wrist the day before, then blend the tips to your skin tone with a little foundation. Soft lavender shadow, delicate liner and pale pink lipstick. A vintage-style suitcase or a plain-covered spellbook suits a traveling mage.
Thrifted Shirts Into Anime Uniforms
A huge share of these characters wear some version of a school or work uniform, and nearly all of them start with a white button-down shirt, a blazer or a pleated skirt. Thrift stores are full of them. What turns a plain piece into a specific character is usually one of three small changes, and none of them needs a pattern.
- Collars: a sailor collar is a flat square of fabric that can be cut and sewn separately, then basted onto a plain top and removed afterward.
- Trim: gold or white ribbon sewn along hems and cuffs reads clearly in photos. Iron-on hemming tape is quicker, but it peels at curves.
- Fit: take in a loose blazer at the side seams with a few pins, then stitch. Shortened sleeves alone make a thrifted jacket look made for you.
Wash every thrifted piece before you alter it, since cotton shirts can still shrink, and buy a size up if you're unsure. Letting a seam out is far harder than taking one in.
A Costume You Can Wear From Opening to Closing
Cosplay at a big event usually means standing, walking and queuing for most of a day, and the costumes that last are the ones planned for it. Two-piece outfits are easier than jumpsuits when you need the bathroom. Cushioned insoles go in every pair of character shoes, and I break new boots in around the house for a week beforehand. Keep a small kit in your bag: bobby pins, safety pins, a needle and thread in black and white, blister plasters and a travel-size setting spray. A wig that starts to itch, a strap that rubs or a hem that drops can all be fixed in five minutes if the kit is with you.
Colors and Silhouette First, Props Last
Every outfit in this list works for the same reason: the character's main colors and silhouette are right, and you can wear the clothes for hours. Get those two things settled before you spend time on small decorations. A properly fitted wig, tidy makeup, shoes you can stand in and one clear prop usually beat a pile of bulky accessories. Change hemlines, sleeves, fabrics and shoes to suit your coverage needs, your budget and the event's rules, and thrifted pieces will do just as well as custom ones when the proportions are right. Above all, pick a character you genuinely like. You'll spend a long day in their clothes.
