A celebrity costume lives or dies on one detail people already carry in their heads: a hairline, a hat, a single colour. Get that one thing right and the rest can come from your own wardrobe or a thrift rail. Below are pop stars, Hollywood names and red-carpet moments, each broken down into the clothes, shoes, hair, accessories and makeup that make the reference land. Some take an afternoon with a glue gun; others take ten minutes and a wig. One rule I hold to on every celebrity look: dress the fashion, never change your skin tone or borrow someone's cultural features.

Wigs Carry Most of a Celebrity Costume
Look down the list and you'll notice that hair is the first clue for most of these stars: Dolly's volume, Amy's beehive, Cher's centre part, Ariana's ponytail. So the wig is where I'd put the bulk of the budget and the prep time, even if the outfit is thrifted.
- Cheap synthetic wigs come out of the bag very shiny. A light dusting of dry shampoo or a little face powder brushed through the lengths takes the plastic shine down so it looks more like hair in flash photos.
- Wear a wig cap and pin through it at the crown and behind each ear. A wig that shifts every time you laugh is the most common reason people give up on the costume halfway through the night.
- Bangs on party wigs are usually cut too long. Trim them a little at a time with sharp scissors, pointing the blades into the fringe rather than cutting straight across, and try the wig on between snips.
- Most budget synthetic fibre melts or frizzes under a curling iron. Check the label for heat-resistant fibre before you use hot tools; otherwise shape it with steam from a kettle or a hand steamer, held well back, and let it cool before touching.
- Brush long wigs from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb. Starting at the root pulls fibres out and leaves a sheddy halo.
If you'd rather skip a wig, pick a star whose hair you can copy with your own: a slick ponytail for Rihanna, a sleek bun for Audrey, loose waves for Taylor. Temporary colour sprays and waxes work for a night, but they transfer onto collars, pillows and car headrests, so put an old towel over your shoulders when you apply them.
1. Taylor Swift Eras Tour Costume

Taylor Swift's stage look starts with a rhinestone bodysuit over nude or matching dance tights, ideally blue, silver or multicoloured with fringe that swings as you walk. Glittery ankle boots and a light microphone make the concert theme obvious. For hair, soft bangs and loose waves, either your own or a wig cut close to that shape. I'd keep the face to red lipstick, a winged liner and a little body shimmer, then load one wrist with friendship bracelets you can trade at the party. If a bodysuit feels too bare, a sequined mini dress carries the same boots, mic and bracelets just as well.
2. Sabrina Carpenter Stage Costume

For Sabrina Carpenter, I build around a short pastel corset dress with a structured bodice, some sparkle and a flared or ruffled skirt. Opaque dance shorts underneath mean you can sit, bend and dance without thinking about it. Platform heels or sparkly ankle boots finish the stage feel. The wig matters most here: blonde, full curtain bangs, soft polished curls. Rosy blush, fluttery lashes and glossy lips keep the face sweet, and a rhinestone mic plus a tiny painted heart on the cheek or chest gives people one more clue.
3. Beyoncé Silver Stage Costume

The silver Beyoncé look can start from a metallic catsuit, a sequined jumpsuit or a long-sleeved silver mini dress. Mirrored knee boots, sheer tights and a wide-brim silver cowboy hat push it into that futuristic Western mood, and the hat is the piece I'd spend on first because it reads from across a room. Wear your own hair in full waves or a long honey-blonde wavy wig. Luminous skin, bronze eyeshadow, glossy neutral lips and a few face gems are plenty; heavy theatrical makeup fights the metallic fabric. A silver hand fan gives you movement in photos, and if a fitted base feels too much, a metallic blazer with matching flares and a sparkly top is a relaxed alternative.
4. Lady Gaga Red Carpet Costume

Lady Gaga's famous red-carpet moment works far better in fabric than in anything edible. I'd build the dress from layered burgundy felt, light faux suede or irregular panels of crinkled red cloth stitched onto a simple sleeveless base, overlapping the panels so the edges look ragged on purpose. A matching headpiece from scraps on a sturdy headband and red platform boots tie it together. Underneath, smooth waves or a pale blonde wig, with bold liner, strong brows and deep red lipstick. A small silver clutch is enough of a prop; the texture already tells the story, and soft fabric keeps it clean for a public party.
5. Britney Spears School Uniform Costume

Britney's school-video look is one of the easiest to thrift: white button-down, grey cardigan, black pleated skirt. Tie the shirt at the waist over a fitted tank so you're not relying on the knot for coverage. Knee socks, chunky black shoes and pink ribbons finish the outfit, with a blonde wig or your own hair in two braided pigtails and a few wispy pieces at the face. Keep makeup to rosy gloss and lightly defined eyes, and carry a notebook or a headset mic. I'd keep the skirt at a sensible length, especially for school, community or family events, because the pigtails do the recognising, not the hemline.
6. Ariana Grande Pop Star Costume

Ariana Grande is all about the high ponytail, so that's where I start. A clip-in ponytail extension with a small section of your own hair wrapped round the base hides the clip and stays put for hours; pin it into a firm base ponytail or it slides down by midnight. For clothes, an oversized pastel sweatshirt worn as a dress over fitted shorts, or a long-sleeved mini dress with thigh-high boots, with opaque tights if the short shape feels exposed. A cat-ear headband, winged liner, highlighted cheeks, a glossy neutral lip, small sparkly earrings and a light mic round it out. Most of it comes straight from your closet or a resale shop, which makes it a good last-minute pick.
7. Billie Eilish Neon Streetwear Costume

Billie Eilish is the comfortable option on this list. An oversized black tee, loose cargo shorts and a roomy jacket with neon green trim, plus tall athletic socks and chunky sneakers, give you those deliberately big proportions. A black-and-neon wig with the green at the roots reads as her earlier hair; temporary green hair wax is a simpler route if you hate wigs, though it rubs onto collars. Keep the face bare-looking with brushed brows and neutral lips. Layer silver-tone chains and rings, but I'd pick light ones, since a heavy chain starts dragging at your neck after a couple of hours.
8. Chappell Roan Pink Cowgirl Costume

Chappell Roan's pink cowgirl look is loud on purpose. Pick one base, a pink fringe mini dress, a sparkly corset with a matching skirt, or a rhinestone Western shirt with flares, then add white or pink cowboy boots and a decorated hat. The long red curly wig is what makes people say her name, so don't skip it. Go big on rosy blush, colourful eyeshadow, lashes and bright lipstick, and add star earrings, a pink neck scarf and a gem-covered toy mic. For more coverage, a fringed jacket over high-waisted trousers keeps the palette, curls, hat and boots intact.
9. Olivia Rodrigo Cheerleader Costume

Olivia Rodrigo's rebellious cheerleader starts with a blue-and-white cheer uniform, or a pleated skirt and a fitted varsity-style top. Pick a skirt length you're comfortable in and wear matching shorts underneath. White crew socks and chunky sneakers survive a long night better than any cheer shoe. Dark loose waves with small clips, fresh makeup and a few tiny purple face stickers do the rest, with pom-poms or a rolled paper megaphone in hand. For the chest lettering I'd use removable felt letters held with safety pins rather than glue, because felt letters peel off polyester uniforms within an hour, and never copy a real school's logo. A cropped varsity jacket keeps you warm outside.
10. Dua Lipa Disco Costume

Dua Lipa's disco look needs metallic colour and clean retro lines. A pink sequined mini dress, a shimmering jumpsuit or a glittery long-sleeved top with matching flares all work, set on silver platform boots. Wear dark hair sleek with a centre part and soft waves, or a shoulder-length brunette wig. Metallic shadow, sharp liner, glowing skin and glossy pink lips, with big hoops and a sparkly belt to define the waist. A silver mic is all the prop you need, and on a cold night a matching faux-fur jacket goes over the top without hiding the shine.
11. Katy Perry Candy Costume

You don't need to copy Katy Perry's elaborate stage dress to get the candy idea across; a bright blue curly wig is half the job. Decorate a pastel fit-and-flare dress with felt candy shapes, striped ribbon and light faux sweets, and stitch rather than glue anything heavy, since glued decorations are the first things to drop off when you sit. I'd choose a higher neckline so the trims have room. Colourful tights, glittery platforms or pink sneakers, blue eyeshadow and bubblegum lips follow. The oversized swirl lollipop is painted cardboard on a wooden dowel with rounded ends, and a candy headband adds one more cue. It adapts well for teens and family parties.
12. Rihanna Red Performance Costume

Rihanna's red performance wardrobe needs very few pieces. A red utility jumpsuit, loose coveralls, or a fitted long-sleeved bodysuit under baggy red pants gives you the base, with a structured red jacket if you want more volume. White or red sneakers keep you comfortable. Sleek high ponytail or long straight hair, glowing skin, defined eyes and a classic red lip. Add a light mic, matching gloves and small sparkly earrings, and then stop. The clean single colour is what reads, and a roomy red base hides thermal layers on a cold outdoor night.
13. Madonna Bridal Pop Costume

Madonna's bridal stage look turns into a tasteful layered costume with very little sewing. Start with a white lace midi dress, a corset top over a camisole, or a tiered white skirt with an opaque lace blouse. Fingerless lace gloves, stacked faux pearls and a short tulle veil on a bow headband carry the 1980s video mood. I'd wear white ankle boots or low block heels instead of delicate formal shoes, which are miserable by the second hour. Tousled blonde waves with a big bow at the crown, strong brows, soft smoky eyes and red lipstick, plus a small bouquet of white fabric flowers, and you're done.
14. Cher Sequin Jumpsuit Costume

Cher comes down to long hair, sparkle and a long, lean line. Look for a black or silver sequined jumpsuit with flared legs and long sleeves, and put a fitted black camisole or mesh top under any neckline that feels too open. Platform boots matter here for a practical reason: they lift the flares off the floor so the hems don't fray or catch. The waist-length straight black wig with a clean centre part is the real signal. Smoky eyes, long lashes, highlighted cheeks, a glossy neutral lip, big hoops and a rhinestone cuff are enough jewellery. Jumpsuits come in fitted, relaxed, petite, tall and plus cuts, so this one adapts to almost any body.
15. Dolly Parton Country Costume

Dolly Parton is cheerful country glamour. Tuck a rhinestone Western shirt into high-waisted flares, or wear a bright fringe dress with a fitted jacket, keeping to pink, white, turquoise and silver. Sparkly cowboy boots and a decorated belt with a big costume buckle anchor the outfit. The voluminous blonde wig is the part everyone recognises, especially with curled bangs and full layers; tease it at the roots and spray it, because a flat Dolly wig loses the joke. Rosy blush, defined eyes, bright lips, shimmer, oversized earrings and a small guitar or mic finish it. Focus on hair, rhinestones and fringe rather than exaggerating anyone's body.
16. Marilyn Monroe White Dress Costume

Marilyn's white dress stays popular because the details are simple. I look for a knee-length white halter with a full pleated skirt and a neckline that stays put when you lean over, then add skin-tone shorts underneath. White or metallic closed-toe heels, pearl studs and a small vintage clutch come next. A short platinum wig in soft pin curls, red lips, winged liner, softly arched brows and a little beauty mark give you the Old Hollywood face. Skip the wind machine; hold one side of the skirt lightly for photos. Outdoors, a white faux-fur wrap keeps you warm without hiding the dress.
17. Audrey Hepburn Black Dress Costume

Audrey Hepburn takes almost no crafting. A sleeveless black midi or ankle-length dress with a clean fitted bodice, black low heels, sheer gloves, layered faux pearls and big dark sunglasses carry it. Put dark hair into a high polished bun, or use an updo wig with a short fringe. Winged liner, defined brows, rosy lips and a soft matte face, plus a tiny silver tiara pinned into the bun with two crossed bobby pins so it doesn't tip. A paper coffee cup or a small clutch is the prop. Because nothing pinches or drags, it's the one I suggest for work parties and dinners.
18. Princess Diana Revenge Dress Costume

Princess Diana's black evening look is quieter glamour. Choose an off-the-shoulder black midi with gentle ruching or a soft draped neckline, and sew a strip of silicone gripper elastic inside the top edge if it keeps sliding down your arms. Sheer black tights and pointed pumps go underneath. The jewellery carries the reference: a short faux-pearl choker with a large centre stone, matching earrings and a small black clutch. A short sandy-blonde feathered wig, or your own hair in a neat side-parted bob, plus natural skin, pink blush and a muted rose lip. A small bouquet is optional; keep everything refined so it reads as intentional.
19. Jennifer Lopez Green Dress Costume

The green tropical-print dress is the whole Jennifer Lopez reference, so spend your effort there. A long flowing dress, a wrap shape or a matching top and skirt with blue and green leaves all work. Wear a green camisole and fitted shorts under any open or sheer areas, and use fashion tape and hidden safety pins to hold the drape; I tape first, then pin at the waist where pins don't show. Nude platform sandals or gold heels you can walk in, long honey-brown hair half up, bronze shadow, glowing cheeks and glossy nude lips. Gold hoops and a small metallic clutch finish it.
20. Selena Quintanilla Purple Jumpsuit Costume

Selena's purple jumpsuit is easy to approximate. Look for a long-sleeved fitted jumpsuit with flared legs, or pair a purple sequin top with matching high-waisted pants for a simpler DIY version. Low black boots or purple platforms you can actually move in, long dark loose curls lifted at the crown, defined liner, warm blush and a rich red lip. Big silver-tone hoops and a light mic finish it. Practise one confident stage pose before the party; it does more for the photos than any extra accessory. It works on its own or as part of a music-icon group.
21. Shania Twain Leopard Costume

Shania Twain's hooded leopard look is mostly one coat. Wear a long leopard coat or hooded cardigan over a black turtleneck and fitted black pants, and layer a leopard crop top over the turtleneck if you want a closer match while staying covered. Black ankle boots or heeled knee boots, long brunette waves showing around the hood, smoky liner, bronzed cheeks and a neutral lip. Add a toy mic and simple silver earrings, nothing more, because the print already does the work. I'd put this near the top for a cold outdoor night, since thermals hide under that coat without changing the shape.
22. Gwen Stefani Plaid Punk Costume

Gwen Stefani mixes punk, pop and the 1990s. Red plaid pants with a white cropped tank over a longer fitted camisole, suspenders, a studded belt and black lace-up boots make the base; a plaid midi with opaque tights and the same boots is the skirt version. Platinum hair goes into small space buns or a high ponytail with short pieces at the face. Thin arched brows, winged liner and bright red lipstick are non-negotiable for this one. Add silver chains and a handheld mic, and leave out any cultural accessories so the plaid, lip and blonde hair carry it.
23. Stevie Nicks Flowing Black Costume

Stevie Nicks is dramatic and still comfortable, because nothing is fitted. Start with a long black dress with bell sleeves, lace panels or a handkerchief hem, add a fringed velvet shawl and black platform boots. A wide-brim hat gives structure; keep it plain so nobody mistakes you for a witch. Long blonde tousled waves, smoky grey shadow, defined lashes and a berry lip, with a ribbon-tied tambourine as the prop. Layered necklaces and silver rings add texture. Leggings, a thermal top and warm socks disappear under the loose layers, so I steer cold-weather parties toward this one.
24. Diana Ross Disco Costume

Diana Ross needs sweep and shine: a sequined gown or a sparkly wide-leg jumpsuit in gold, silver, white or deep red. Pick platform heels with stable block soles; a skinny heel under a long sequined hem is how ankles get turned. The wig should be a voluminous dark curly one shaped into a full round silhouette, and I'd pick it out gently with fingers, never a brush, so the curls don't frizz. Luminous foundation, smoky eyes, lashes, glowing blush and glossy lips, with chandelier earrings and stacked bangles. A vintage mic or a light wrap over one arm helps in photos, and a sequined tunic with flares stands in for a floor-length gown.
25. Whitney Houston Pink Dress Costume

Whitney Houston's pink-dress era is pure 1980s energy. A sleeveless pink mini or knee-length dress with a fitted waist and soft flare, topped with a cropped denim jacket, sets the reference. Sheer tights with white ankle boots or comfortable low heels go underneath. The short dark curly wig needs volume at the crown, so I'd lift it with a wide-tooth comb before you leave the house. Blue-grey eyeshadow, defined lashes, pink blush and glossy rose lips, big geometric earrings, colourful bangles and a light mic for dance poses. For more coverage, a pink skater dress over opaque tights keeps the denim and curls.
26. Tina Turner Fringe Dress Costume

A Tina Turner look has to be ready to move the second you walk in. Start with a black or gold mini dress covered in fringe, sequins or both, with fitted shorts and opaque tights underneath for dancing. Sturdy heeled ankle boots or pointed flat boots, then a warm-brown spiky wig with swept-back layers; a spiky wig flattens in its bag, so I always fluff and spray it on the day. Smoky eyes, strong lashes, warm blush, a glossy neutral lip, big hoops and a cuff. A plain mic beats any song-specific prop, and a fringed jacket over a fitted top and flares gives more coverage.
27. Amy Winehouse Beehive Costume

The beehive does nearly all the work on an Amy Winehouse look, so the clothes can stay simple. A fitted black knee-length dress, a wide belt and ballet flats or low heels, with a cropped cardigan if it's cool. Use a black beehive wig, smooth the front and leave long sections loose at the shoulders; a beehive wig is top-heavy, so I anchor it with four or five bobby pins through a wig cap. Draw a long, dramatic wing, define the brows and wear a muted pink lip, with big hoops. Carry a retro mic or a small clutch, never cigarettes or anything else restricted.
28. Freddie Mercury Live Aid Costume

Freddie Mercury's stadium outfit is one of the easiest to pull from everyday clothes. A fitted white tank tucked into light-wash straight jeans, a black belt with a metal buckle and white athletic sneakers. Style short dark hair neatly or use a cropped black wig, and stick on a removable costume moustache; I trim those a little with nail scissors because they come too bushy out of the packet. Keep the rest of the face natural and lightly powdered. A silver armband on one upper arm and a mic on a short, light stand with soft ends finish the pose without poking anyone.
29. Elton John Sequin Baseball Costume

Elton John is the maximalist pick. A sequined baseball shirt or jacket in blue, white and silver with matching flares sets it up, and plain pieces can be dressed with iron-on stars and rhinestone trim. Iron-on stars hold far better if you add a few stitches at the points, since the edges lift after a night of moving. Platform sneakers or glitter boots with steady soles, a short auburn-blonde wig under a matching cap, and the oversized star-shaped glasses, which are the one accessory you can't skip. Light foundation, subtle blush and a toy mic or a foam-board keyboard on a crossbody strap. It suits concerts and music-icon groups.
30. Harry Styles Feather Boa Costume

Harry Styles is all colourful tailoring. High-waisted flared trousers with a matching jacket in pink, yellow, green or blue, worn over a silky button-down or a fitted tank, plus white platform boots or loafers with a small heel. Short brown loose curls, or a cropped curly wig. Glowing skin, softly lined eyes, chunky rings and a faux-pearl necklace. For the boa, I'd make a feather-free one from gathered tulle or fringe, which doesn't shed all over the party the way feathers do. It works for any gender, and it's comfortable enough to dance in all night.
31. David Bowie Ziggy Stardust Costume

A red mullet wig and the lightning-bolt face turn a metallic outfit into Ziggy Stardust. Wear a shimmering jumpsuit in red, blue, silver or gold, ideally with flared legs and strong shoulders, plus matching platform ankle boots. Paint the bolt in red and blue cosmetic face paint, well away from the eyes, and press setting powder over it; I outline with a fine brush first and fill afterwards, which keeps the edges sharp. Metallic cuffs and a light mic finish it. A metallic jacket and flares can replace the jumpsuit if separates fit better, and most of this comes from thrift and craft stores.
32. Elvis Presley White Jumpsuit Costume

The Elvis jumpsuit is long-sleeved and flared, with a high collar and gold trim, cinched with a wide white belt and a big costume buckle. Choose white platform boots or low dress shoes that won't catch under the flares, which is the most common trip hazard with this one. A black pompadour wig with neat sideburn pieces holds its shape with a little temporary hair product. Natural makeup, a softly defined brow and a touch of contour, then gold-tinted sunglasses and a light mic. A white thermal underneath keeps you warm, and the jumpsuit, hair and glasses carry it without any impersonation gestures.
33. Prince Purple Suit Costume

Purple tailoring is the fastest route to Prince. A deep purple suit with slim or flared trousers and a long jacket, over a white ruffled shirt with a high neck and big cuffs. Thrift a plain purple suit and add the ruffles to a cheap white shirt; a gathered strip of chiffon stitched down the placket is an evening's sewing. Black or purple heeled ankle boots, dark curly volume at the crown or a short textured wig, soft smoky liner and a neutral lip. A brooch, lace gloves, a toy mic and a single faux rose finish it, and the shape suits many body types.
34. Michael Jackson Thriller Costume

For Michael Jackson, the red faux-leather jacket with black V-shaped panels is the piece. Wear it with a plain black shirt and slim black pants cropped just above the ankle so the white socks show over black loafers. Loose dark curls or a short curly wig, then keep the face natural; no horror makeup and no change of skin tone. A little liner, defined brows, one sparkly glove and dark sunglasses are enough. If you can't find the jacket, I'd paint black vinyl panels onto a plain red jacket rather than skipping it, because without it the costume reads as a generic outfit.
35. Bruno Mars Retro Performer Costume

Bruno Mars mixes retro tailoring with loose confidence. A silky patterned shirt tucked into high-waisted black trousers and a red or burgundy blazer, with polished loafers or two-tone dress shoes. I always add cushioned insoles to dress shoes for a costume night, because hard soles hurt long before the party ends. A neat pompadour, or a short curly wig under a matching fedora, dark sunglasses, a slim gold-tone chain and a light mic. Roll the sleeves a little for a looser feel, or go all burgundy in shirt and trousers.
36. Pitbull Black Suit Costume

Pitbull is my go-to when someone has an hour to get ready. A fitted black suit and a crisp white shirt with the collar open, no tie, plus black loafers or shiny lace-ups. Only wear a bald cap if it sits securely and feels comfortable; slicked-back hair works just as well. Dark aviators, minimal makeup, a light mic and a small faux backstage pass for a laugh. The suit should be tailored enough to look deliberate but loose enough to dance in, and posture does the rest.
37. Justin Bieber Early Pop Costume

Early-2010s Justin Bieber is a bright purple hoodie over a white tee with dark skinny or straight jeans, high-top sneakers and a flat-brim cap tipped slightly to one side. The hair is the tell: a light-brown wig with long side-swept bangs, or your own hair combed into that swoop. Keep the face fresh and natural. A rubber wristband and a light mic are the props, and a toy acoustic guitar is fun for photos if it's easy to carry. It's casual enough for a cool October evening, and teens tend to love wearing it.
38. Zendaya Silver Robot Costume

The Zendaya robot look relies on clean silver structure. Start with a metallic silver bodysuit over opaque leggings, or a fitted silver jumpsuit for more coverage. Cut armour panels for the shoulders, hips, knees and forearms from craft foam, paint them silver and attach them with elastic or stitched tabs rather than glue alone. Keep every panel slightly short of the joint so you can still sit, walk and climb stairs. Silver platforms, sleek pulled-back hair or a smooth black wig, silver shadow, glossy lips and a few face gems. Skip a full helmet; a curved metallic headband reads as futuristic without blocking your view.
39. Kim Kardashian Black Met Gala Costume

The all-black, face-covered Met Gala look is memorable precisely because so little shows. A long-sleeved black tunic or dress over opaque leggings, a floor-length cape and pointed black ankle boots form the silhouette. Use a breathable black mesh hood you can see through, and take it off whenever your view feels limited; I test mesh in a dim hallway at home before I trust it. A long sleek ponytail extension can attach at the back of the hood. Makeup barely matters here. Black gloves and a small structured bag finish it, and please be careful on stairs and crowded dance floors.
40. Paris Hilton Silver Party Dress Costume

Paris Hilton's early-2000s party style is a glittering silver mini. Choose a chainmail-style, beaded or rhinestone dress with a proper lining and comfortable straps; unlined beading scratches the skin raw by the end of the night. Add a sparkly choker, a small silver bag and pointed metallic heels, or silver ballet flats if you'll be walking. A long blonde wig with a deep side part and a smooth straight finish, frosted eyeshadow, rosy blush, glossy pink lips and some body shimmer. Lightly tinted oversized sunglasses and a rhinestone hair clip are true to the era, and a fitted silver slip underneath gives more coverage.
A Microphone Prop in One Evening
Nearly every look here comes with a microphone, and a toy one rarely matches the outfit. Making your own is quick, light and safer to wave around on a dance floor than anything with metal in it.
- Cut a cardboard tube from a paper towel or wrapping paper roll to about the length of your hand plus a few fingers.
- Push a foam ball or a scrunched ball of foil into one end and wrap it in black mesh or a scrap of old tights for the grille.
- Paint or wrap the handle in silver, gold or the colour of your outfit. For a sparkly mic, glue rhinestones on with a flexible fabric or craft glue rather than hot glue, which cracks and pops off when the room is cold or the prop gets knocked.
- Let the glue cure overnight before you carry it; most flexible glues stay tacky for hours.
Sequins Against Bare Skin All Night
Sequins, beading and rhinestone trim show up on half of these costumes, and the inside of those garments is where nights go wrong. Sequins sliced through at the seams have sharp edges, so I cover any exposed inner seams at the underarm and waist with soft fabric tape or a strip of bias binding stitched down by hand. If a dress is unlined, a thin slip or a fitted bodysuit underneath stops the scratching and adds coverage at the same time.
Shed sequins are normal; carry a few safety pins and a small roll of clear tape in your bag for a loose strap or a hanging trim. And give metallic and sequin fabrics a sit-down test at home. Some stretch knits look fine standing but split at the seat seam the first time you crouch for a group photo.
Start With the Hair, Then the Clothes
The celebrity costumes that work best take one famous fashion moment and add details you can wear comfortably all evening. I start with the most recognisable garment or hairstyle, then add shoes, makeup and one meaningful prop. Designer originals aren't needed; thrifted clothes, a decent wig, costume jewellery, fabric paint and a few handmade pieces get the reference across. Adjust hems, heels and layers to your body and your party. And let clothing and performance tell the story, never your skin tone or someone else's ethnicity.
