A couple costume works when both of you are clearly someone, and neither of you is stuck as the prop. I've put together 40 famous pairs here: classic films, cartoons, superheroes, silly food duos and a few old-school Halloween themes. For each one I give you the whole outfit, from clothes and hair to makeup, accessories and shoes you can actually stand in. Most can be pulled from your own wardrobe, a thrift rail or a craft drawer, and nearly all of them let you swap roles, add coverage or change footwear without losing the detail people recognise. Read through, then pick the pair that sounds most like the two of you.

Pairing Rules I Use Before Buying Anything
Most couple costumes that fall flat do so because one person put in all the effort and the other wore a T-shirt. Before you buy anything, agree on how much work each of you will do and keep it roughly even. If one character has a big gown, give the other one strong hair, a hat or a prop so the pair still looks balanced in photos.
- Name each character's one signature detail, like Leia's buns, Mario's mustache or Morticia's long black dress, and spend the most money and time there.
- Repeat one colour across both outfits. A small shared red, gold or purple pulls two very different costumes together.
- Stand next to each other and take a phone photo from across the room. If either of you can't be named from that distance, strengthen the signature detail.
- Check you can both sit, eat and use the bathroom. Jumpsuits, corsets and full suits often fail that last test.
I'd also settle shoes early. One of you in heels and the other in sneakers is fine, but if the night involves walking between houses or a long queue outside, both pairs need to be ones you've already broken in.
1. Gomez And Morticia Addams Couple Costume

Gomez and Morticia are the pair I suggest when a couple wants to look dressed up rather than costumed. Morticia's dress is the whole character, so spend your effort there: floor-length black, long sleeves, fitted through the body, with a hem that flares softly at the floor. Straight, centre-parted black hair, smoky grey eyes and deep berry lipstick go with it, plus black heels or pointed flats. Gomez needs a dark pinstripe suit, a crisp white shirt, a narrow tie, combed hair and a pencil mustache drawn on with brow pencil. Black dress shoes, and one artificial red rose between you. I'd hem Morticia's dress a touch above the floor so it doesn't collect everything at the party.
2. Jack And Sally Couple Costume

Jack and Sally give you colour and a bit of spook without any gory makeup. Jack wears a black pinstripe suit, a white shirt, a bat-shaped bow tie and black dress shoes, with a smooth white base and simple black eye shapes. Sally starts with a patchwork-print midi or maxi dress over pale tights, a long red wig, a blue-toned face and stitch lines drawn lightly in eyeliner, finished with lace-up ankle boots. Keep the face work clean and cartoonish. A small fake flower or a rolled paper scroll makes a shared prop. If you're making Sally's dress, I'd piece it from four or five real cotton prints rather than one patchwork print; the seams are what make it read as stitched together.
3. Beetlejuice And Lydia Couple Costume

Beetlejuice and Lydia pair loud stripes with gothic drama. One of you wears a black-and-white striped suit over a white shirt with a loose black tie, messy green-tinted hair, pale makeup, shaded eyes and black boots. Lydia has two good options: the long red ruffled wedding dress with a veil, or a modest black lace dress with sheer sleeves. Either way she gets teased dark hair, soft grey eyes, burgundy lipstick and black ankle boots, plus a small vintage-style camera. For the green hair, I'd use a coloured hair spray or a wig rather than chalk on dark hair, since chalk barely shows and rubs onto every collar.
4. Barbie And Ken Couple Costume

Barbie and Ken can go a dozen ways, but the matching Western outfits are the version most people place straight away. Barbie wears a hot-pink vest with matching flares, a white top, a pink neck scarf, a white cowboy hat and white ankle boots, with blonde waves and glossy pink makeup. Ken wears a black fringed Western shirt, black pants, a pink bandana, a white cowboy hat and dark boots. A blond wig helps but isn't required. Silver star pins or a little trim do more than a pile of accessories. Before the party, I'd check that both hats actually fit; a cowboy hat a size too big slides back all night and drags hair with it.
5. Shrek And Fiona Couple Costume

Shrek and Fiona suit couples who'd rather laugh than look glamorous. Shrek layers a cream tunic-style shirt under a brown textured vest, with cropped brown pants, a wide belt, dark boots and a soft green ear headband. Washable green face paint and shaped brows give him the animated expression. Fiona wears a long green medieval-style dress with gold trim, a braided red wig, a small gold crown, green makeup and low brown boots or flats, with matching soft ears. Skip the rubber masks; they get hot within minutes. Green face paint is the weak point here, so set it well with translucent powder or it will end up on Fiona's dress the first time you hug.
6. Mario And Princess Peach Couple Costume

Mario and Peach are easy to spot across a crowded room because the colours do all the work. Mario needs blue overalls over a red long-sleeve shirt, white gloves, brown work boots, a red cap and a tidy fake mustache. Peach wears a pink puff-sleeve dress with a full skirt, elbow-length white gloves, a small gold crown, blue earrings and comfortable pink flats, with blonde curls or a long golden wig, rosy makeup and a pink lip. A star or mushroom prop is fun for photos, though the clothes stand on their own. Use spirit gum or a good lash-type adhesive for the mustache; the sticky strips that come in packs lift as soon as you talk or eat.
7. Mickey And Minnie Couple Costume

Mickey and Minnie come together from ordinary clothes. Mickey wears red pants or shorts with two big white felt buttons, a fitted black top, yellow sneakers, white gloves and a round-ear headband, plus a small black nose in face paint. Minnie wears a red-and-white polka-dot dress, or a dotted skirt with a black top, white gloves, yellow or black flats, ears and a matching bow, with a red lip and soft curls. The ears carry both looks, so I'd buy or make headbands with a firm band; floppy ears tilt forward by the end of the night. Breathable fabrics and real shoes keep you both comfortable.
8. Fred And Wilma Flintstone Couple Costume

Fred and Wilma bring cheerful cartoon nostalgia, and they're about as light as costumes get. Fred wears an orange tunic with black triangle markings over dark shorts, a bright blue necktie and brown slip-ons, with a short black wig or his own hair tousled. Wilma needs a one-shoulder white midi dress, an oversized white bead necklace, orange-red hair in a high bun and white or nude flats, with winged liner and coral lipstick. Felt cut into triangles makes Fred's markings with no sewing; I glue them with fabric glue a day ahead, since hot glue goes stiff and peels on a moving tunic. It's a smart pick for a warm night or a long evening on your feet.
9. Popeye And Olive Oyl Couple Costume

Popeye and Olive Oyl mix sailor details with easy vintage pieces. Popeye wears dark sailor pants, a navy shirt with a red collar, a white sailor cap, a yellow belt and sturdy black shoes, with temporary anchor tattoos on the forearms, an optional padded forearm sleeve and a little can marked with a hand-drawn spinach symbol. Olive Oyl wears a red long-sleeve top, a black midi skirt, a white collar, yellow ribbon trim and brown ankle boots, with dark hair in a neat low bun and light rosy makeup. The long skirt and separates adjust to the weather. That red, navy, yellow and black mix reads as cartoon straight away, even without the forearms.
10. Kermit And Miss Piggy Couple Costume

Kermit and Miss Piggy balance a simple outfit with a very theatrical one. Kermit wears a green shirt and matching pants, green sneakers and a pointed felt collar, with a soft frog-eye headband and just a few green accents on the face. Miss Piggy goes for a lavender or pink sequin midi dress, faux pearls, long gloves, sparkly heels and a curled blond wig, with dramatic lashes, pink lipstick and a pig-ear headband with a small rounded snout. A tiny microphone or a star-shaped clutch gives her the stage presence. When I cut Kermit's collar, I use stiff felt and cut the points slightly longer than looks right, because soft felt points curl inward within an hour.
11. Beauty And The Beast Couple Costume

Beauty and the Beast belong at a dressier party. Belle wears a yellow or gold floor-length gown with a full skirt, elbow-length gloves, low gold heels and a half-up curled style, with delicate earrings, soft rosy makeup and an artificial red rose. The Beast layers a royal-blue tailcoat over a white ruffled shirt and black trousers, adding a gold vest, dark dress shoes, swept-back hair and a light ear headband. Blue or brown contouring hints at the character without hiding his face. Gold and blue tie the two together. If the gown has a big skirt, I'd add a simple hoop or a stiff net petticoat; without one, a full skirt collapses flat after an hour of sitting.
12. Aladdin And Jasmine Couple Costume

Aladdin and Jasmine are colourful and can be as modest as you like. Aladdin wears loose white pants and a purple vest over a cream long-sleeve shirt, with a red sash, a soft red cap and brown slip-ons. Jasmine wears a wide-leg turquoise jumpsuit with draped shoulders over a fitted matching top, gold flats, statement earrings, a turquoise headband and dark hair in a bubble ponytail, with gold liner and a soft berry lip. A small lamp prop links you in photos. For the bubble ponytail, I tie each section with clear elastics and then hide them under thin strips of gold ribbon, which keeps the bubbles round all night.
13. Ariel And Prince Eric Couple Costume

Ariel and Eric can feel romantic without a mermaid tail you can't walk in. Ariel wears a sea-green sequin midi skirt with a fitted purple top, a long red wavy wig, pearls and metallic flats, with luminous skin, coral lipstick and highlighted cheeks. Eric pairs fitted navy pants with a white long-sleeve shirt, a red waist sash, black knee-high boot covers and neat dark hair. A small shell-shaped purse is Ariel's practical piece; Eric doesn't need a prop. The skirt lets you walk and dance. One warning on sequins: they scratch the inside of arms, so I'd pick a sequin skirt with a soft lining, or wear long sleeves next to it.
14. Cinderella And Prince Charming Couple Costume

Cinderella and Prince Charming are classic formalwear in costume form. Cinderella wears a pale-blue ball gown or full midi dress with sheer sleeves, a black ribbon choker, long white gloves and sparkly low heels, with blonde hair in a smooth updo, a blue headband, cool-toned eyes and a soft pink lip. The Prince wears cream trousers with a white military-style jacket trimmed in gold and red, a gold waist sash, dark formal shoes and neat hair. Leave the glass slipper at home; it's awkward to carry and breaks. A small silver clutch is far more useful. If gloves feel fussy, take them off for eating and keep them tucked in the sash.
15. Rapunzel And Flynn Rider Couple Costume

Rapunzel and Flynn work well for couples who want a fairytale look with practical layers. Rapunzel wears a lavender lace-up dress with puff sleeves, a flowing skirt and purple flats, with an extra-long golden braid dotted with artificial flowers, natural pink makeup and a small crossbody tucked behind the braid. Flynn pairs a cream henley with fitted brown pants, a teal vest, a wide belt and dark knee-high boots, with swept, slightly messy brown hair and a light satchel. The braid is the hard part. I'd build it from two or three cheap braiding-hair packs plaited over a lightweight core and clipped into her own hair, because a solid braid that long gets heavy on the neck fast.
16. Mary Poppins And Bert Couple Costume

Mary Poppins and Bert make a vintage pair, and most of the pieces live on in your wardrobe. Mary wears a white high-neck blouse tucked into a long navy skirt, a fitted dark jacket, opaque tights and lace-up black boots, with a small hat trimmed in artificial daisies, a structured carpet-style bag, rosy cheeks, red lipstick and a neat bun. Bert wears charcoal trousers, a soft striped shirt, a red neck scarf, a dark vest, a flat cap and scuffed black boots. Smudge a little grey eyeshadow on his cheeks and sleeves for soot; eyeshadow dusts off clothes far more easily than face paint does. A closed umbrella and a light brush finish it, and all those layers suit a cold October night.
17. Alice And Mad Hatter Couple Costume

Alice and the Mad Hatter play neat against chaotic. Alice wears a knee-length blue dress over a white blouse, a white apron, striped tights, black Mary Janes and a black ribbon headband, with loose blonde waves and fresh, rosy makeup. The Hatter mixes plaid trousers, a colourful vest, a long coat, a patterned bow tie and a tall decorated top hat, with an orange curly wig, tinted brows, mismatched socks and lace-up boots. Alice carries a teacup; the Hatter gets a cluster of ribbon spools pinned to his coat. Clashing prints only work if one colour repeats across them, so I'd pull one shade from the plaid into the vest and bow tie, while Alice's blue dress holds the pair together.
18. Dorothy And Scarecrow Couple Costume

Dorothy and the Scarecrow come almost entirely from everyday clothes. Dorothy wears a blue gingham pinafore over a white puff-sleeve blouse, ankle socks, sparkly red flats and two braids tied with blue ribbon, with natural makeup and a small woven basket holding a plush dog. The Scarecrow layers patched brown trousers with a green or tan shirt, a rope belt, a floppy hat and comfortable brown boots, with a stitched smile drawn in soft brown liner and peachy cheek circles. Raffia at the cuffs and collar sells it, but loose raffia sheds everywhere. I tie it in small bundles and stitch each bundle in, so you don't leave a trail across the host's floor.
19. Sandy And Danny Grease Couple Costume

Sandy and Danny from Grease come straight out of a well-stocked closet. Sandy wears high-waisted black pants, a fitted off-the-shoulder black top over a camisole so it stays put, a wide belt, red heels or flats and gold hoops, with big blonde curls, winged liner and red lipstick. Danny wears black trousers, a fitted black tee, a faux-leather jacket, black dress shoes and combed hair with a small front curl. Vintage sunglasses make a good shared photo prop. An almost all-black pair needs one contrast, and Sandy's red does it. Choose stretch pants and shoes you've already worn in, because this is a pair people expect to see dancing.
20. Mia And Vincent Couple Costume

Mia and Vincent from Pulp Fiction are about the quickest film pair you can pull together. Mia wears cropped black trousers, an oversized white button-down, simple black flats and a sleek chin-length black bob wig with blunt bangs, plus red lipstick, dark nails and subtle winged liner. Vincent needs a black suit, a white shirt, a narrow black tie, polished black shoes and shoulder-length dark hair or a straight wig. Keep accessories minimal so the black and white stays sharp. A homemade dance-contest card makes a safe photo prop. A bob wig is the one thing worth paying a little more for, because cheap bobs have a shiny, helmet-like fringe that gives the game away.
21. Forrest Gump And Jenny Couple Costume

Forrest and Jenny pair a retro runner with a 1970s free spirit. Forrest needs short red athletic shorts, a pale yellow tee, striped tube socks, vintage-style running shoes, a red cap and a long brown beard. Jenny wears a flowing floral maxi dress with a crochet vest, flat brown sandals or ankle boots, layered necklaces and loose centre-parted hair, with peach blush and a natural lip. Forrest carries a small box painted like a chocolate assortment or wears a yellow smiley button. The warm seventies colours connect two very different outfits. If the beard is a stick-on, I'd test it at home first; mesh-backed beards hold, but cheap elastic ones pull at the ears all night.
22. Rocky And Adrian Couple Costume

Rocky and Adrian is sporty nostalgia with nothing complicated in it. Rocky wears a grey sweatshirt and sweatpants, a navy knit cap, white socks, worn-in running shoes, tousled dark hair and simple wristbands. Adrian can go for her later, more confident look: a rust or cream midi coat over a modest blouse and skirt, tights, low boots, big vintage glasses and soft dark curls, or a warm knit sweater and midi skirt for indoors. Rocky carries a rolled towel; Adrian, a vintage handbag. The muted winter colours sit well together. I'd send Rocky in a heavyweight grey fleece set, since thin sweats look like pyjamas and lose the character.
23. Jack And Rose Titanic Couple Costume

Jack and Rose from Titanic tell their story through fabric. Rose wears an Edwardian-style burgundy or navy maxi dress with lace sleeves, a softly draped bodice and a floor-skimming skirt, plus a wide-brim hat, gloves, delicate jewellery, low heels and red hair pinned into a curled updo. Jack wears brown trousers with braces, a collarless white shirt, a worn vest, dark lace-up boots and side-parted hair, carrying a sketchbook and charcoal pencil. Go for period shape over exact replica. Wide-brim hats look grand and are miserable in a crowd, so I pin Rose's with two hatpins through the updo and plan to take it off once the photos are done.
24. Maverick And Charlie Pilot Couple Costume

Maverick and Charlie from Top Gun mix flight-line style with polished eighties dressing. Maverick wears an olive flight suit with removable aviation-style patches, a white tee, black combat-style boots, mirrored aviators and neat hair. Charlie wears a fitted black pencil skirt with a white blouse, a cropped bomber, sheer tights and low black pumps, with big blonde hair, neutral makeup and classic sunglasses; tailored black trousers work just as well if a skirt feels too formal. Skip any realistic military gear. Flight suits run long in the body, so try one on and sit down in it before the night; a few inches off the leg hem make a big difference.
25. Wanda And Vision Couple Costume

Wanda and Vision are bold primary-and-secondary colour at its simplest. Wanda wears a fitted red top with matching gloves, a knee-length red cape, pink or red tights, ankle boots and a pointed red headpiece, with loose auburn waves, rosy makeup and red lipstick. Vision wears a fitted green top and pants under a yellow cape, with yellow gloves, boots and a forehead gem made from craft foam, and soft red makeup around the forehead and cheeks instead of a full mask. Two capes make you a matched set. I heat-shape the foam gem with a hairdryer before painting it, so it curves to the forehead and doesn't pop off.
26. Harley Quinn And Joker Couple Costume

Harley Quinn and the Joker can be playful comic characters with no weapons and nothing gory. Harley wears a red-and-black diamond jacket with leggings or a knee-length skirt, black ankle boots, fingerless gloves and red and blue hair ribbons, plus pale foundation, winged liner and bright red lipstick. The Joker wears purple trousers and jacket, a green vest, dark shoes and a slicked-back green wig, with white face makeup, green brows and a painted smile that stays colourful rather than scary. Foam playing cards are safe props. White face base cracks around the mouth after an hour of talking, so I'd use a thin layer, set it with powder and carry a small touch-up kit.
27. Superman And Lois Lane Couple Costume

Superman and Lois Lane put a superhero next to a working reporter. Superman wears a blue fitted jumpsuit, or blue shirt and pants, with a red-and-yellow chest emblem, a red cape, red boots and neat dark hair. Lois wears tailored black trousers or a pencil skirt with a crisp blouse, a blazer, sensible pumps and a press-pass badge, with soft waves, natural makeup and a notebook and pen. My favourite detail: Superman wears an open white shirt and loosened tie over the emblem, which gives you the classic reveal and more coverage for anyone who doesn't want to spend the night in spandex alone. Each of you has a full, distinct look.
28. Batman And Catwoman Couple Costume

Batman and Catwoman are a sleek all-black pair that can stay comfortable and family-friendly. Batman wears a black or charcoal fitted top and pants, a short cape, a soft eye mask, a utility-style belt and sturdy black boots, with a subtle chest emblem and slicked-back hair. Catwoman wears a long-sleeve black jumpsuit, low-heeled ankle boots, fitted gloves, a simple eye mask and a cat-ear headband, with a low ponytail or hair tucked under a close cap, smoky eyes and a neutral lip. I'd pick matte fabrics over shiny vinyl: matte looks richer in photos, and vinyl traps heat and squeaks every time you sit down.
29. Spider-Man And Mary Jane Couple Costume

Spider-Man and Mary Jane put one bold costume next to one easy everyday outfit. Spider-Man wears a red-and-blue full-body suit with built-in shoe covers, or a printed top with blue pants and red sneakers. Choose a mask that comes off easily, so eating and talking aren't a struggle. Mary Jane wears a red wig in loose waves, a purple or red fitted top, dark jeans, a black jacket and comfortable ankle boots, with natural makeup and a small camera or notebook; a knee-length red dress and black flats make a dressier version. Full-body suits run small and short in the torso, so I'd size up and check you can lift your arms before cutting off the tags.
30. Mr. And Mrs. Incredible Couple Costume

Mr. and Mrs. Incredible are a true matched pair, so neither of you plays second fiddle. Both wear red fitted jumpsuits, or red tops with black leggings, plus black gloves, black boots, eye masks and yellow belt details, with the same emblem on each chest in felt or removable fabric adhesive. He wears short blond hair; she wears a sleek auburn bob wig. Keep the makeup natural so the masks stand out. If bodysuits feel restrictive, athletic separates in the same colours work fine. I'd cut both emblems from one template at the same time, because two emblems even slightly different in size look like a mistake in photos.
31. Woody And Bo Peep Couple Costume

Woody and Bo Peep bring lots of texture and a Western feel. Woody layers a yellow checked shirt under a cow-print vest with blue jeans, a red neck scarf, a brown cowboy hat, a wide belt and brown boots, plus a gold felt star badge. Bo Peep wears a pale-blue jumpsuit or full skirt with a corset-style waist panel, a pink cape, a matching hair bow and low blue boots, with a high blonde ponytail and bright rosy makeup. Leave the shepherd's crook at home; it's hard to manage in a crowd. The cow-print vest is the piece people spot first, so I'd make it from faux-fur cow print rather than a flat printed cotton.
32. Han Solo And Princess Leia Couple Costume

Han and Leia read clearly without any armour or blasters. Han wears navy trousers with a red side stripe, a cream shirt, a fitted black vest, a wide belt and tall black boots, with swept-back brown hair. Leia wears a long white dress with a high neck and wide sleeves, comfortable white boots and her side buns, with soft neutral makeup, a pale lip and a silver belt to define the waist. Skip the replica blaster; the hair and silhouettes carry the characters. The buns are what sell her. I build each one around a hair donut or a coil of braided hair pinned flat, so they stay round and don't droop toward the ears.
33. Romeo And Juliet Couple Costume

Romeo and Juliet give you a Renaissance-style romance from theatrical separates. Juliet wears a floor-length jewel-tone gown with a square neckline, fitted sleeves, gold trim and a light veil, with braided hair, delicate earrings, soft rose makeup and flat slippers. Romeo pairs fitted black trousers with a white poet shirt, a brocade vest, a short velvet cape and dark knee-high boots, plus a soft fabric cap. Lean on rich textures rather than stage props. Burgundy, navy, cream and gold sit well together without matching exactly. For a busy party or a walk outside, I'd shorten Juliet's hem to the ankle; velvet and brocade drag and get heavy when wet.
34. Pac-Man And Ghost Couple Costume

Pac-Man and a ghost make a quick graphic joke. One of you wears a bright yellow round tunic over a yellow long-sleeve shirt, black leggings, yellow sneakers and a matching cap, with simple rosy makeup and the face fully visible. The other wears a red, pink, blue or orange tunic with a scalloped hem over matching leggings and sneakers, plus a headband with two big white felt eyes and blue pupils. Foam dots can be carried or stuck to a small crossbody bag. I cut both tunics from felt or fleece rather than foam board; soft tunics fold when you sit, while foam board circles hit every table edge in the room.
35. Astronaut And Alien Couple Costume

An astronaut and an alien leave plenty of room for your own ideas. The astronaut wears a white utility jumpsuit with removable space-style patches, a silver belt, white boots and a light open-face helmet or headset, with silver eye accents and pulled-back hair. The alien goes for a metallic green or silver jumpsuit, platform sneakers, long gloves, an antenna headband and shimmering face makeup, with a green bob wig or slicked-back silver hair and a small clear crossbody bag. White and metallic tie you together while the shapes keep the roles clear. Metallic fabric photographs brightly but shows every crease, so I'd steam both jumpsuits right before you leave.
36. Bee And Beekeeper Couple Costume

A bee and a beekeeper are cute, clear and easy to adjust for the weather. The bee wears a black-and-yellow striped top with a black skirt or pants, opaque tights, black ankle boots, sheer wings and an antenna headband, with yellow eye makeup and a small black nose. The beekeeper wears cream utility pants and a matching long-sleeve shirt, work boots, gloves and a wide-brim hat with a light mesh veil, carrying a flower bundle or honeycomb bag. Keep the wings compact for doorways. The veil is the bit to think about: I'd pin it up over the hat brim for most of the night and let it down for photos, because mesh in front of the face makes drinking and talking awkward.
37. Peanut Butter And Jelly Couple Costume

Peanut butter and jelly suits couples who like making the same thing twice. Each of you wears a tan bread-shaped foam tunic over a long-sleeve shirt and comfortable pants, with a golden-brown crust border. One tunic gets a big light-brown peanut butter panel; the other gets a purple or red jelly panel. Match the underlayers to the filling, warm brown for peanut butter and berry purple for jelly, and add matching sneakers and headbands topped with small felt sandwich triangles. Keep hair and faces natural; the tunics are the joke. Use thin foam or felt so you can still sit and dance, and I'd cut a slight curve into the bread top so it reads as a slice, not a box.
38. Plug And Socket Couple Costume

A plug and socket is a simple visual joke built on all-black clothes. The plug wears a black sweatshirt, pants and sneakers under a rectangular grey foam-board tunic with two short, soft, rounded prongs at the front. The socket wears the same black separates under a square white or grey tunic with two dark vertical slots and a round hole beneath. Keep both panels light and hang them from shoulder straps so they come off quickly. Neat hair and minimal makeup let the shapes stand out. It's cheap and fast to make, but I'd keep the prongs flexible foam, not cardboard, since they sit right at hip height in a crowd.
39. Sun And Moon Couple Costume

A sun and moon pair leans on metallic fabric and colour rather than a film reference. The sun wears a gold jumpsuit or yellow midi dress with matching shoes, a radiating headband, gold gloves and warm shimmer, with loose golden curls or slicked-back hair with metallic accents. The moon wears silver or midnight blue with a flowing cape, silver ankle boots, a crescent headpiece and cool pearl-toned makeup, with a few star appliqués on the cape or trousers. Small round metallic bags keep your things close. I'd steer clear of loose glitter here; it migrates onto your partner, the sofa and everyone you hug, and a cream shimmer gives the glow without the mess.
40. Witch And Black Cat Couple Costume

A witch and a black cat end the list on a classic Halloween pair that stays playful. The witch wears a long purple or black dress with a fitted waist, striped tights, buckled ankle boots and a wide-brim pointed hat, with soft waves, plum eye makeup and a miniature broom. The cat wears a fitted black top and pants, comfortable boots, gloves, a tail and a soft ear headband, with a small nose and fine whiskers drawn in eyeliner and smoky eyes. Mixing velvet, lace and matte cotton keeps all that black from going flat. Purple on both ties you together. I'd sew the tail to a belt worn under the top, not to the pants, so it doesn't pull them down when someone steps on it.
Green Paint, Hugs and Other Transfer Problems
Couples touch more than friends at a party, and face paint goes wherever you do. Shrek green, Joker white, Wanda's red and the cat's whiskers will all end up on a partner's collar, shoulder or cheek if they're left unset. Cream paint transfers the most because it never fully dries.
Setting it so it stays put
Apply cream or water-activated paint in thin layers, let each one dry, then press translucent setting powder over it with a puff rather than sweeping. A makeup setting spray on top adds another barrier. Patch-test any new paint on the inside of the wrist a day before, and do it again for every new brand or colour, since one shade can bother skin when another from the same set doesn't. Keep the paint off the lips and inside the eye area.
Wigs and taking it all off
Synthetic wigs frizz and can melt near heat, so keep them away from candles, fire pits and the oven. A wig cap and four or five bobby pins crossed in an X keep a wig steady through dancing. At the end of the night, take paint off with an oil-based cleanser or balm before you use soap and water; scrubbing dry paint with a wipe just smears it and leaves your skin sore the next morning.
Settle the Signature Detail, Then Shop
Every pair above comes down to a couple of details people recognise, a colour you share, and both of you being comfortable enough to stay out all night. Work out those details first, then build the rest from what you own: breathable layers, shoes you've worn before, accessories that are fixed on properly and makeup you've tested. Swap roles, change hems, trade a fitted piece for something looser or skip the wig and use your own hair; none of it costs you the character as long as the signature pieces are there. The gothic pair and the sandwich pair ask for the same thing, which is equal effort from both of you.
