A Halloween costume shouldn't turn into one more October project. Every look below starts with something most women already own, a black dress, jeans, a button-down, leggings or a simple skirt, and then adds one thing that names the character: a hat, a headband, a hairstyle or a small handmade prop. You'll find classic Halloween characters, animals, screen favorites, vintage looks and a few for when you have an hour. I've written each one head to toe, shoes included, because the shoes are usually what decide how long you stay in costume. Pick the one that matches your closet first and your mood second, and you'll spend very little.

Wigs, Braids and a Faux Bob Without Cutting Anything
A lot of the characters below are recognized by their hair before anything else: Velma's bob, Wednesday's braids, Daphne's flip, Holly's updo. You don't need to cut or dye anything for them. I decide early whether to work with your own hair or a wig, because that choice changes how the hat or headband goes on.
Working with your own hair
A faux bob comes from rolling longer hair under at the nape and pinning it in place, then smoothing the ends. Braids hold their shape better if the hair is a day past washing. Temporary color sprays wash out with shampoo, but they can stain very light or bleached hair, so test a small section underneath first.
Making a cheap wig behave
- Shake it out and brush it gently with a wide-tooth comb before the first wear; a new wig sheds loose fibers and tangles straight from the bag.
- Take down the plastic shine with a light dusting of dry shampoo.
- Wear a wig cap, or flat pin curls, so it sits low on the forehead rather than perched on top.
- Keep synthetic wigs away from curling irons, candles and heaters. Most synthetic fibers frizz or melt with heat.
1. Simple Witch Costume With Black Dress

A black dress is the quickest start to a witch. A midi, maxi or knee-length style all work, with striped tights or plain black leggings for warmth and a pointed hat on top. One purple or green scarf adds color. Wear your hair loose and wavy, or in a low side braid under the brim. A soft smoky eye, berry lipstick and a tiny star drawn near one cheek keep the makeup playful. I'd carry a faux spellbook rather than a broom if you'll be holding a drink most of the night, since a broom needs a hand of its own. Black ankle boots, loafers or cushioned flats are what get you through a full evening.
2. Simple Black Cat Costume With Leggings

When time is short, the black cat is the safe bet. A fitted black long-sleeve top with black leggings, trousers or a casual skirt over opaque tights, a flexible black tail safety-pinned at the back, and an ear headband. A high ponytail, soft waves or two small buns under the ears all suit it. Draw a tiny nose, whiskers and a small wing of liner with skin-safe makeup. A black choker with a little bell is the accessory people remember. I pin the tail at the center back of the waistband, not off to one side, or it swings round to the hip when you sit. Sneakers, ballet flats or ankle boots, depending on how dressed up you want to feel.
3. Simple Scarecrow Costume With Flannel Shirt

Fall clothes do most of the work for a scarecrow. Tuck a plaid flannel shirt into jeans, denim overalls or a brown corduroy skirt, then add small patches of colorful fabric with removable tape or a few loose hand stitches. A straw hat gives the shape, and raffia tied at the cuffs adds texture. Two loose braids or low pigtails, warm blush, freckles, a small painted nose and short stitch lines at the corners of the mouth make a friendly face. I cut the patches with pinking shears, since that zigzag edge reads as patched from across a room. Carry a small basket of silk leaves or sunflowers and wear brown boots, lace-ups or clogs.
4. Simple Cowgirl Costume With Denim

Do you already own jeans and a button-down? Then you own a cowgirl costume. Bootcut denim with a plaid, chambray or white Western-style shirt, a wide belt, a bandanna at the neck and a felt cowboy hat. A denim skirt with tights works just as well. Loose waves, a side braid or low pigtails under the hat, with rosy cheeks, neutral shadow and a soft red lip. A coil of rope or a small hobby horse is the prop. I'd tuck the shirt in fully and pull it slightly loose above the belt, which keeps it neat when you raise your arms. Cowboy boots are best, but brown ankle boots or sturdy lace-ups walk further.
5. Simple Rosie The Riveter Costume

Rosie the Riveter is easy to copy and still reads at a glance. A denim or chambray button-down with the sleeves rolled above the elbows, tucked into high-waisted dark jeans, work pants or overalls. Tie a red polka-dot bandanna over a bun or rolled hairstyle with the knot showing at the top. I fold the bandanna into a triangle, tie it at the nape first and then knot the two ends at the crown, because that order is what keeps it sitting forward like the poster. Defined brows, black mascara, rosy cheeks and red lipstick finish the face. Pose with one arm flexed or carry a small cardboard sign, and wear red canvas sneakers, brown work boots or loafers.
6. Simple Wednesday Addams Costume

Wednesday Addams starts with a black long-sleeve dress and a crisp white collar. If your dress has no collar, wear a white button-down underneath and pull the collar and cuffs through. Black tights and a narrow black belt finish the shape. Part your hair in the center and plait two neat braids, or use a dark wig. I braid them tight, low and behind the ears, because loose high braids make the look softer than it should be. Keep the makeup pale and understated, with lightly defined eyes, cool blush and muted berry lips. An old-looking book is the prop. Black Mary Janes, loafers or low lace-up boots.
7. Simple Velma Costume With Orange Sweater

Velma's colors do the recognizing for you. An orange turtleneck or sweater with a red pleated skirt and orange knee socks; if you can't match the exact shades, close warm tones keep the silhouette right. Square black glasses with clear lenses, and either a short brown bob wig or a faux bob. For the faux bob, I roll longer hair under at the nape and pin it into place, then smooth the ends with a little spray so the pins don't show. Freckles, a neutral lip and lightly defined eyes are all the makeup she needs. Carry a magnifying glass, notebook or flashlight, and wear red flats, burgundy loafers or low block heels.
8. Simple Daphne Costume With Purple Dress

Daphne is a fitted purple dress and a green scarf. A long-sleeve mini, a knee-length shift or a purple sweater dress, depending on the weather, with pink or lavender tights. Tie the scarf snug at the side of the neck; it's the single detail people look for. Red or auburn hair with volume and flipped ends, or a shoulder-length wig in that shade. A cheap wig in a bright red often looks shiny under party lights, so I dust it lightly with dry shampoo to take the shine down. Winged liner, peach blush and pink lipstick, a small purple handbag, and purple flats, lavender boots or pink shoes finish her.
9. Simple Holly Golightly Costume

Holly Golightly needs a sleeveless black midi or maxi dress, long black gloves, a sparkling necklace and big dark sunglasses. Put your hair in a high updo with the front smooth and a small comb or rhinestone clip at the crown. Clean liner, defined lashes, softly sculpted cheeks and pale pink lipstick keep it classic. A paper coffee cup and a small pastry bag are the props. Long gloves slide down within the hour, so I fix them at the top with a little double-sided garment tape on the inside. Black kitten heels feel right, though pointed flats are kinder on a long night, and a short black cardigan adds warmth without changing the outfit.
10. Simple Mary Poppins Costume

A neat white blouse and a dark midi skirt make the base for Mary Poppins. Button the blouse to the collar, add a red bow tie and a fitted black blazer or cardigan, and wind a few artificial flowers around the band of a black hat. A tidy low bun sits under the hat. Rosy cheeks, defined lashes and red lipstick give it a storybook finish. Carry a closed black umbrella and a carpet-style tote or patterned handbag. I'd glue the flowers to a ribbon first and then tie the ribbon round the hat, so you can take it off later and keep the hat. Black lace-up ankle boots or loafers, and white gloves on a cold night.
11. Simple Mime Costume With Striped Shirt

A mime looks deliberate with only a few familiar pieces. A black-and-white striped shirt with black trousers, fitted jeans or a suspender skirt, then black suspenders, a red neck scarf and a small beret. Hair in a low bun or tucked under the beret. For the face, a light base, dark liner, rosy circles on the cheeks and a small red heart or neat lip. If you want a subtler version for work, skip the heavy white entirely; the stripes and beret are enough. I'd still wear the white gloves, because they make every silent gesture read in photos. An empty picture frame is the best prop, and black ballet flats, loafers or lace-ups finish it.
12. Simple Tourist Costume With Hawaiian Shirt

The tourist is the costume for when comfort beats glamour. A bright floral shirt over a plain tank, with relaxed shorts, cropped pants or a denim skirt. Add a sun hat, sunglasses, a belt bag and a folded paper map. A loose ponytail or casual braid looks ready for sightseeing. Keep the makeup natural with a little rosy blush and a visible stripe of white on the nose for the sunscreen joke. A camera, binoculars or a pamphlet from your last trip makes the prop. White crew socks with sandals or sneakers are part of the gag. I tie a light cardigan round the waist, which looks the part and covers you once the evening turns cold.
13. Simple Librarian Costume With Cardigan

For a smart, quiet costume, layer a buttoned cardigan over a collared blouse and a pleated midi skirt; trousers or a sweater dress work just as well. Add reading glasses, a watch and a simple name badge that says librarian. Twist your hair into a low bun with a pencil through it, or wear it neat at the shoulder. Neutral makeup, defined brows and berry lipstick. Real hardbacks weigh a lot by the end of the night, so I carry two or three paperbacks tied with ribbon, or a small tote with a reading slogan. Loafers, oxfords or low block heels. It's one of the easiest picks for work, school or a daytime event.
14. Simple Artist Costume With Paint Palette

An artist starts from a white button-down, a striped top or an old smock, with black cropped pants, overalls or relaxed jeans. Dab a few spots of washable fabric paint onto the smock, test it on an inside seam first, then add a tilted beret and a bright scarf. A messy bun, loose waves or a short bob under the hat. Natural makeup with a couple of tiny colorful marks on one cheek in skin-safe face paint. I make the palette from cardboard about the size of a dinner plate, with a thumb hole, because anything bigger is awkward to carry all night. A few clean brushes in a pocket, and black flats, canvas sneakers or loafers.
15. Simple Chef Costume With White Shirt

An oversized white button-down or plain white top becomes a chef. Wear it with black pants, checked trousers or a knee-length black skirt, add a double-breasted look with two rows of removable black buttons if you like, and tie a red scarf at the neck. A paper chef hat or a homemade cardstock one sets the theme. Hair goes in a neat bun or low ponytail under the hat. Clean, simple makeup with a red lip. Carry a wooden spoon, whisk or empty mixing bowl. An apron adds character and gives you pockets for your phone and keys, which I find is the most useful part. Slip-resistant sneakers, loafers or lace-ups keep it practical.
16. Simple Detective Costume With Trench Coat

A neutral trench coat is the start of a classic detective. Layer it over a white blouse with black trousers, straight jeans or a plaid midi skirt, and add a narrow tie, a checked scarf and a structured felt hat if you have one. Low ponytail, soft waves or a smooth bob. Neutral makeup with defined brows and a little smoky liner for a focused look. A magnifying glass and a notebook of pretend clues are the props, and brown loafers, ankle boots or oxfords match the coat. I belt the trench outdoors and leave it open indoors, so the outfit underneath still shows once you warm up.
17. Simple Flapper Costume With Fringe Dress

A flapper can be a black shift dress, a fringe-trimmed party dress or a loose knee-length slip over an opaque top. Add long faux pearls, elbow-length gloves and a stretch headband with a feather or rhinestone brooch. Short hair takes finger-style waves; longer hair can be pinned into a low faux bob. Smoky shadow, thin arched brows, rosy cheeks and deep red lipstick. A small beaded purse or a folding fan. I knot the pearls once at chest height, which stops a long strand swinging into your drink. T-strap shoes, low block heels or embellished flats, plus opaque tights and a soft wrap if you'll be outside.
18. Simple Hippie Costume With Flared Jeans

Flared jeans and a colorful printed blouse give you a 1970s hippie in wearable pieces. Layer a fringed vest, crochet cardigan or loose kimono-style jacket on top, then add a wide fabric headband and a few long beaded necklaces. Hair down in natural waves or two loose braids. Soft brown shadow, peach blush and a tiny painted flower near one cheek. Round sunglasses and a cardboard peace-sign pendant are the accessories. I wear the headband low across the forehead rather than on top of the head, since that's what makes it look like the era and not a gym band. Platform boots, clogs or flat ankle boots. Stick to florals and earthy colors.
19. Simple Disco Queen Costume With Sequins

For a disco queen, tuck a sequined top into high-waisted flares, or wear a metallic jumpsuit or shimmering midi dress. Add big hoop earrings, tinted glasses and a narrow glittery belt. Large curls, a rounded voluminous shape or a high ponytail that moves. Shimmer shadow, glossy lips and bright highlighter, no face paint needed. A small silver clutch or a mirrored cardboard circle is the prop. Sequins scratch the inside of the arms when you dance, so I pick a sequined top with a soft lining or wear a thin long-sleeve layer beneath it. Platform sandals, chunky heels or metallic sneakers; choose stable ones if you'll be standing for hours.
20. Simple 80s Aerobics Costume

An 80s aerobics costume is mostly activewear you already have. A bright leotard or fitted tank over contrasting leggings, and a cropped sweatshirt slipped off one shoulder. Leg warmers, wristbands and a wide elastic belt add the retro detail. A high side ponytail with a big scrunchie. Blue or purple shadow, pink blush and glossy lips. A small hand weight, a rolled mat or a cardboard music player for the prop. I cut the neckband out of an old sweatshirt for the off-shoulder look, which is quicker than hunting for one. White high-tops stay comfortable all evening, and breathable layers come off easily indoors.
21. Simple 90s Grunge Costume With Plaid Shirt

A 90s grunge costume begins with a band-style graphic tee or a plain dark T-shirt. Ripped jeans, a denim skirt over tights or loose black pants go underneath, with a plaid flannel tied at the waist, a black knit beanie, a simple choker and layered chains. Hair loose and tousled or in a messy low bun. Smudged brown liner, matte skin and deep berry lipstick. An old music player, wired headphones or a cardboard cassette is the prop, and black combat boots or worn canvas sneakers finish it. I tie the flannel by the sleeves at the front, a bit off-center, and let it hang long at the back; that's the shape people remember.
22. Simple Angel Costume With White Dress

An angel is a white dress, jumpsuit or top-and-skirt set, plus light white wings and a halo. For the halo, I twist silver garland around a loop of craft wire and fix it to a headband with a short upright wire, so it floats just above your head rather than sitting on your hair. Soft curls, a low bun or a loose half-up style. Pearl shadow, rosy cheeks, a touch of highlighter and pale pink lipstick. A small silver star wand or a fluffy white bag in hand. White ballet flats, sneakers or low boots keep walking easy, and a white cardigan with opaque tights adds warmth without breaking the color.
23. Simple Fairy Costume With Tulle Skirt

A pastel tulle skirt over a fitted top or simple dress makes a fairy. Choose lavender, pink, blue or mint, then add translucent wings and a narrow ribbon belt. A small floral crown, or a few blossoms clipped into curled hair. Shimmer shadow, rosy blush, glossy lips and a few face-safe gems near the eyes. A light star wand or a drawstring pouch of paper confetti. Tulle snags on everything, from jewelry to chair edges, so I wear a smooth slip or leggings under it and keep bracelets off that hand. Ballet flats, glittery sneakers or low metallic shoes, and a cropped cardigan if it's chilly.
24. Simple Butterfly Costume With Black Outfit

A butterfly begins with a fitted black top and black leggings, trousers or a comfortable midi dress, which lets the colorful wings do the work. The wings go on with soft shoulder straps, and a headband with curled antennae tells people you aren't a fairy. Keep hair in a sleek ponytail, a braided bun or waves that won't cover the wings. Paint symmetrical eye makeup using two or three colors from the wings, with small dots at the temples in skin-safe liner. I hold the wing colors up to my face in a mirror before choosing shadows, since some wing shades turn muddy on skin. A silk flower or a small butterfly net, and black boots, flats or sneakers.
25. Simple Bumblebee Costume With Striped Top

A black-and-yellow striped sweater or T-shirt is the whole bumblebee base. Pair it with black leggings, jeans or a tulle skirt over opaque tights, then add soft mesh wings and an antenna headband made from black pipe cleaners with yellow pom-poms. A high bun, two mini buns or a bouncy ponytail. Gold shadow, black liner, pink cheeks and a tiny painted heart on the nose. A silk sunflower or a honeycomb cardboard purse is the prop. Pipe-cleaner antennae flop after a while, so I twist two together for each one. Black flats, yellow sneakers or ankle boots, and wings small enough for hallways.
26. Simple Ladybug Costume With Red Dress

A red dress, or a red top with a black skirt, is the start of a ladybug. Attach removable black felt circles across the red, then add black tights, small red-and-black wings and an antenna headband. Smooth ponytail, low bun or two space buns. Winged black liner, red lipstick, rosy cheeks and a few tiny dots near one eye. A silk leaf, red flower or round black bag. Space the spots so the pattern reads clearly; I lay the dress flat and place all of them before sticking any, because spots placed while wearing it always drift toward the front. Black ballet flats, Mary Janes or ankle boots, and a black cardigan blends in when you need warmth.
27. Simple Deer Costume With Brown Dress

Soft brown clothing makes a deer that's cute rather than frightening. A brown dress, a tan sweater with leggings, or a caramel top and skirt, with a faux-fur vest and a headband carrying small felt ears and light antlers. A low ponytail or two small buns near the headband. Warm brown shadow, white dots across the cheeks and a small dark nose in skin-safe makeup. Silk autumn leaves or a tiny basket of greenery. A new faux-fur vest sheds on everything nearby, so I shake it out and lint-roll it outdoors the day before. Brown ankle boots, loafers or suede-style flats, and flexible antlers that don't pull on the headband.
28. Simple Bunny Costume With Pink Dress

A bunny can look polished with very little. A pink, gray, white or black dress, a matching set, or a sweater and skirt, with opaque tights and a soft ear headband in the same color family. A high ponytail or two round buns under the ears. A small nose, short whiskers and a few freckles, then rosy blush and pink lipstick. The fluffy clip-on tail matters more than people expect, since it finishes the back view in photos. I clip it to the waistband and add a safety pin behind it as a backup. A small basket of artificial carrots or flowers, and ballet flats, clean sneakers or low ankle boots.
29. Simple Leopard Costume With Printed Dress

Leopard print sets this costume in one move. A leopard dress, blouse or cardigan, and if it's just a top, pair it with black jeans, leggings or a fitted midi skirt. A tan-and-black cat-ear headband and a soft clip-on tail if you want one. Voluminous waves, a sleek high ponytail or a textured bun. Bronze shadow, winged liner, small face-safe spots around temples and cheeks, a black nose and fine whiskers. I'd keep the print to one garment; a print top and print accessories together start to look like a pajama set. A tan clutch, and black ankle boots, flats or comfortable heeled boots.
30. Simple Fox Costume With Orange Sweater

Autumn colors make a fox out of seasonal clothes. An orange sweater or rust dress with black leggings, a brown skirt or dark skinny jeans. A white faux-fur collar or scarf becomes the fox's chest, and an orange tail with a white felt tip pins on at the back. Pointed orange ears on a headband. Soft waves or a loose side braid. Warm copper eye makeup, a small black nose, white cheek accents and fine whiskers. I stuff the tail lightly with fiberfill so it has some body, then stitch the white tip on by hand. Carry a silk branch or a small basket of leaves, and wear brown boots, black flats or rust sneakers.
31. Simple Pirate Costume With Striped Shirt

A striped shirt and dark pants make a practical pirate. Add a red vest, a black corset-style belt over the shirt, or a cropped jacket. Tie a red scarf around your head with loose waves, small braids or a low side ponytail underneath. Smudged liner, bronzed cheeks and deep red lipstick for a weathered finish. Hoop earrings and a folded treasure map or a pouch of costume coins. Leave weapon props out. A corset-style belt that's laced too tight gets miserable by the second hour, so I fasten it one notch looser than feels right standing. Black knee boots, lace-up ankle boots or sturdy loafers, and a striped skirt can replace the pants.
32. Simple Sailor Costume With Navy Skirt

A navy-and-white striped top with a navy skirt or high-waisted trousers is a crisp sailor. Add a red neck scarf, a gold-button cardigan and a white sailor cap. Smooth ponytail, curled bob or low bun. Navy liner, rosy cheeks and bright red lipstick. A small coil of white rope, a paper ship or a cardboard anchor is the prop. White sneakers, navy flats or loafers. For a cool night, a navy peacoat works over the top, and I leave it unbuttoned at the neck so the stripes and the scarf still show. Tie the scarf in a loose square knot at the front; a bow looks more schoolgirl than sailor.
33. Simple Mermaid Costume With Sequin Skirt

Build a wearable mermaid around a green, blue or purple sequined midi skirt. A fitted shell-colored top, a shimmering blouse or a plain tank under a cropped cardigan, and a belt of netting, ribbon or strands of faux pearls. Loose beachy waves, with temporary blue or purple color on a few strands if you like. Iridescent shadow, glossy lips and face-safe scale patterns along one temple; I press the scales on through a piece of fishnet with a sponge, which is far quicker than painting each one. A shell purse or a star wand. Metallic flats, glittery sneakers or low silver sandals, and a skirt with a slit or some stretch so you can walk.
34. Simple Greek Goddess Costume With White Dress

A flowing white maxi or a draped white midi makes a goddess inspired by Greek myth. Define the waist with a gold rope belt and drape a light white wrap or scarf across one shoulder. A gold leaf headband over loose curls, a braided crown or a low twisted bun. Gold shadow, bronzed cheeks, highlighter and a neutral lip. Wide cuff bracelets and a gold-painted cardboard scroll or small decorative urn. Metallic flat sandals look right, though gold ballet flats are warmer. I pin the shoulder drape on the inside with a safety pin so it doesn't slip. Keep it fantasy rather than copying the sacred dress of any living culture or faith.
35. Simple Princess Costume With Pastel Dress

A pastel formal dress, an old bridesmaid dress or a full midi skirt becomes a princess. Add a fitted cardigan or a sparkly capelet for a layer, plus a small tiara, a pearl necklace and satin gloves. Soft curls, a high bun or a loose braid with tiny faux flowers. Defined lashes, pink blush, a little shimmer and rosy lipstick. A light wand, a small book or a bouquet. Combs at each end of the tiara grip better than a plain band; I push them in toward the back of the head, then add two bobby pins crossed over each one. Ballet flats, low block heels or embellished sneakers, and smooth underlayers so you can move freely.
36. Simple Ghost Costume With White Dress

A white dress is a more wearable ghost than a sheet. Layer it with white tights and a sheer cape or gauzy shawl that moves as you walk, plus a white headband or small veil. Loose, slightly messy waves. Pale foundation used sparingly, gray shadow blended around the eyes and a cool pink or soft gray lip, kept whimsical. A white lantern, a battery candle or a small Boo sign. White sneakers, flats or ankle boots keep the palette. If you'd rather wear a sheet, I mark the eye holes while it's on you but cut them with it off, make them wide, and keep the hem above your shoes.
37. Simple Skeleton Costume With Black Clothes

An all-black outfit becomes a skeleton with white felt, fabric tape or paper bones. A black long-sleeve shirt and black leggings, or a fitted black jumpsuit, with simple bone shapes along arms, legs and torso. Keep it bold and simple. A high bun or sleek ponytail keeps the face clear. White and black face paint for eye sockets, a small nose shape and simple teeth lines, nothing graphic. I set the white with powder before any black goes near it, or the lines smear gray. A cardboard bone or a black-and-white treat bucket, black sneakers or boots, and reflective white tape on a few bones for outdoor events.
38. Simple Vampire Costume With Red Cape

A black dress, or a black blouse with fitted trousers, is the start of a vampire. Add a red-lined cape, a lace choker and a brooch at the neckline. Smooth waves, a high dramatic ponytail or a sleek center part. Pale makeup with smoky eyes, defined brows, deep berry lipstick and fangs if you want them, kept theatrical without blood. A red rose, an antique-style hand mirror or a small hardcover book. Black ankle boots, pointed flats or low block heels. For work or school, a velvet blazer replaces the cape. I'd try the fangs at home for an evening first, because some sets make talking and drinking surprisingly hard.
39. Simple Mummy Costume With Beige Layers

A comfortable mummy is torn strips of clean white or beige fabric over neutral clothes. A fitted cream long-sleeve top with matching leggings or joggers, then wrap the strips loosely around arms, torso and legs, pinning every end so nothing drags. A messy bun with a few short strips woven in. Taupe shadow, pale foundation and soft brows for a dusty look without anything graphic. A cardboard tablet with pretend symbols is the prop. I wrap the strips diagonally and leave a small gap at the knees and elbows, which is what lets you sit and bend. Beige sneakers, cream boots or neutral flats, and test your movement before you leave.
40. Simple Pumpkin Costume With Orange Dress

An orange dress, sweater dress or matching top and skirt makes a cheerful pumpkin. Add black felt facial shapes with removable fashion tape, or leave the front plain for a dressier version. Green tights or a green scarf for the vine, and a headband with felt leaves and a curled pipe-cleaner stem. A high bun under the stem or loose waves around the headband. Copper shadow, peach blush and an orange-red lip. A pumpkin bucket or a silk vine. I wrap the pipe-cleaner stem around a pencil to curl it, then slide it off; that tight spiral looks much better than a hand-bent one. Green sneakers, brown boots or black flats.
Sequins, Tulle and Faux Fur Over a Long Evening
The fabrics that make these costumes fun are also the ones that cause trouble later on. Knowing how each one behaves lets you plan around it before you go.
- Sequins rub the inside of the arms and the underside of the wrists. A lined top, or a thin long-sleeve layer beneath it, solves that.
- Tulle catches on bracelets, rings, chair edges and other people's buttons. Wear a smooth layer under it and keep jewelry simple on the hand nearest the skirt.
- Faux fur sheds on its first wear and leaves fibers on dark clothes and car seats. A good shake and a lint roller, done outside, take most of it off.
- Satin gloves and stretch velvet show every drip, so I keep food and drinks for after the photos.
- Felt and fabric tape behave well on cotton and wool but can lift on slippery satin, where a few hand stitches hold better.
Before the night, I put the whole costume on and sit, bend, raise both arms and walk up a flight of stairs. Whatever pinches, slides or snags in that five minutes is the thing that'll be bothering you at ten o'clock, and it's much easier to fix with the sewing box still open.
One Clear Detail, Then Comfortable Shoes
The right Halloween look is one you can put together without stress and wear without counting the hours. Ordinary dresses, sweaters, jeans and skirts become clear costumes with very little added. Check your closet before you shop. Then add one strong identifier, ears, a hat, wings, a scarf, a hairstyle or a handmade prop, and make sure it's fastened well. Comfortable shoes do more for your night than any accessory. From a classic witch to a pumpkin, keep the look your own; a simple costume worn with confidence still gets noticed.
