Maleficent is all silhouette. Put someone in black, give them a pair of curved horns and a collar that stands up behind the head, and people know who they are before they see the face. That's good news for styling, because the dress underneath can be almost anything. I've put together fifty ways to wear her, from a floor-length gown to a jumpsuit, a thrifted choir robe or a tunic a child can run in. A few use her green skin, many don't, and a handful add wings, ravens or woodland trim. The horns and the collar stay in every single one.

Horns That Don't Give You a Headache by Nine
Every version below depends on the horns, and horns are where most people's night goes wrong. A pair that looks fine in the mirror can start to pinch behind the ears within an hour, then slowly tip forward until you're holding them up with one hand. Weight and leverage are the whole problem: the taller the horns, the harder they pull.
- Go hollow or foam. Lightweight foam or hollow plastic horns weigh a fraction of solid ones, and you won't see the difference in photos.
- Pad the band. A wide headband wrapped in a strip of soft fleece or felt spreads the pressure, and I cover the ends behind the ears especially.
- Anchor them to the hair, not just the head. Bobby pins crossed through the headband into a smooth bun or a wig cap stop the forward slide.
- Angle them back slightly. Horns that sweep up and back sit over the head's balance point; horns pointing forward act like a lever.
Put the horns on for half an hour at home before the event, doing ordinary things like bending to pick something up. If they shift, fix it then. You won't be able to fix it at the party.
Making the Collar Stand Up
Her collar is the second half of the silhouette. A soft collar flops within minutes, so I back it with a stiff interfacing or thin craft foam, and for tall points I sew a length of flexible wire into the edge with the ends bent over and padded. It should stand by itself, but still bend when you lean back in a chair.
1. Classic Maleficent Costume With Black Gown

Start with a floor-length black gown with long sleeves and a fitted waist. A high neckline gives the strongest classic outline, but a plain maxi dress works too. Over it goes a sweeping black cape with a pointed purple collar, and curved horns sit over hair pinned into a smooth bun. Pale foundation, sharply angled brows, gray contour under the cheekbones, winged liner and a vivid red lip. I always put pointed-toe boots under a long hem, since the toe lifts the fabric slightly and stops you treading on it. Long black gloves and a branch-style staff finish her.
2. Animated Maleficent Costume With Green Makeup

The animated Maleficent lives or dies on her green skin. Put a skin-safe green face colour over a primer, then set it with translucent powder, pressing rather than sweeping so the colour doesn't streak. Thin arched brows, lavender shadow and a deep berry lip. A loose black robe, a purple-lined cape and a tall pointed collar make the body, with lightweight horns over a fitted black hood so no hair shows. In the film her staff is topped with a glowing green orb and her raven rides with her, so a purple ring, a small raven and that staff give you the clues. Flat black ankle boots keep it comfortable.
3. Movie Maleficent Costume With Sculpted Cheekbones

The live-action version is sleeker and sharper. A fitted black gown with structured shoulders under a long cape with a raised collar, and large textured horns on a padded headband. Wrap the hair completely in a close black wrap. The face does a lot here: a luminous pale base, cool contour placed high under the cheekbones, defined brows, long liner and glossy red lips. I place that contour higher than everyday contour, almost up on the cheekbone, because it's the cheekbones people recognise. Small pointed ear cuffs hint at the fairy side. Leather-look gloves, a dark ring and block-heel boots that won't wobble.
4. Maleficent Mistress Of Evil Costume With Wings

Wings are the centrepiece of this one. A fitted black bodysuit or long-sleeve top with a flowing layered skirt, plus light black feather wings on hidden shoulder straps. Before buying, I'd check the wings fold or angle in a little; flat wide wings knock into every doorframe and person at a party. A sculpted horn headpiece, a narrow cape and tall boots that blend into the dark base. Raised brows, strong contour, smoky gray eyes and a deep red lip. Feather cuffs and pointed ear accessories keep the fantasy theme. If wings feel like too much, a feather-trimmed shawl gives you the texture without the width.
5. Young Maleficent Costume With Brown Dress

Young Maleficent is earthy and soft, before the black. An earthy brown maxi dress with a fitted bodice, a moss-green vest or distressed faux-suede corset on top, and light brown horns that curve out of a braided crown. Softly defined brows, peach cheeks, neutral lips and brown liner. Small pointed ear cuffs and delicate temporary vine decals. Brown lace-up boots you can walk in, and a branch dressed with artificial leaves. I'd steer toward this one for daytime and outdoor events; it's far less hot and heavy than the black gowns, and it suits anyone who doesn't want dark makeup.
6. Maleficent Coronation Costume With Regal Cape

For the ceremonial look, I like a long black velvet dress with a fitted waist and a full skirt that moves. Add a cape with a high structured collar and a subtle purple lining. Here I'd skip the giant horns and use slim polished ones wrapped in black satin, which feels more royal. Matte foundation, high contour, precise liner, arched brows and a classic red lip. A dark jewelled brooch at the throat and black opera gloves. Platform boots under a floor-length hem keep the fabric off the ground and help you stand tall, which matters more than you'd think for this character.
7. Maleficent Battle Costume With Black Armor

A black faux-leather tunic gives an armour feel without any real weight. Wear it over fitted leggings with light foam shoulder panels painted charcoal and silver. A short split cape is easier to move in than a full-length one. Ridged horns and a black hood that holds everything in place. Smoky eyes, defined cheekbones, dark red lips and a little silver highlight at the temples. Knee-high flat boots, fitted gloves and feather wrist cuffs. Faux leather doesn't breathe at all, so for a long night I'd choose a tunic with stretch panels at the sides. Leave anything sharp or bulky at home if the event is busy.
8. Maleficent Woodland Costume With Leaf Details

The forest belongs in this version. A black maxi dress trimmed with artificial leaves, flexible vines and a few feathers, concentrated at the shoulders, waist and hem so it looks placed rather than scattered. Brown-black textured horns over loose waves or a fitted dark hood. Soft olive shadow, high contour, black liner and muted berry lips. Pointed ear cuffs and a light raven fixed firmly on one shoulder. Lace-up boots in brown or black. A sheer smoky-green cape adds movement. I tack vines on with a few stitches; glued ones snap off the first time you sit down.
9. Maleficent Queen Costume With Velvet Dress

Black velvet looks royal on almost everyone. A fitted velvet maxi dress with long sleeves, plus a removable pointed collar made from stiff felt or satin-covered foam. Smooth curved horns, a dark jewelled crown band and a full cape lined in purple. Luminous skin, sharply lifted brows, cool contour, metallic gray shadow and a satin red lip. Long gloves and a big black ring. Block-heel boots under the skirt give height you can actually stand in. I'd pick velvet for evening events, since it's warm and photographs richly, and I'd keep the jewellery minimal so the horns stay the focus.
10. Maleficent Costume With Black Feather Cape

A feather capelet turns a plain black dress into the character in one step. Start with a high-neck midi or maxi, put the capelet over the shoulders, and add a longer sheer cape underneath if you want more swing. Curved horns go over a smooth black head wrap. Sharp winged liner, sculpted contour, defined brows and a berry-red lip. Feathered cuffs and a small raven repeat the texture. Opaque tights and pointed ankle boots. Feathers shed, so I give the capelet a shake outside and run a lint roller over it first; that saves you leaving a trail through the party.
11. Maleficent Costume With Purple Cape

Purple lining is the easiest way to add her colour. A plain long-sleeve black maxi under a black cape lined in rich violet, with the collar flipped up and its points shaped by flexible craft wire sewn into the seams, ends tucked and covered so they can't scratch. Black curved horns, a close hood and dark gloves. Pale foundation, strong contour, lavender shadow, a black cat-eye and bright red lips. A purple ring adds a small link. Knee-high boots or stable heeled booties. I'd call this the best beginner build in the list. Purple satin, cotton or cheap lining fabric all work for the lining.
12. Maleficent Costume With Dragon Wings

She turns into a dragon in the animated film, so dragon wings make sense. I'd choose wings with a scaled texture rather than feathers, over a fitted black jumpsuit, a dramatic overskirt and a structured shoulder cape. Ridged horns to match, with the hair under a black hood. Green-black smoky eyes, sharp contour, pointed brows and dark crimson lips. Scale-print gloves and a textured belt tie the wings to the outfit. Flat knee-high boots keep you balanced, because wings shift your centre of gravity backward. Make sure they come off easily for sitting in a car or a chair.
13. Maleficent Costume With Raven Accessories

Ravens give a distinct twist while keeping her recognisable. A sleek black column dress with feather trim at the shoulders and cuffs, a horn headpiece wrapped in matte black ribbon, and a fitted hood. The raven on the shoulder should sit on a small costume harness, not pinned into the fabric; pins let a bird flop forward as soon as you move your head. A feathered clutch or wristlet repeats the motif. Cool contour, smoky liner, arched brows and a rich berry lip. Black gloves and pointed flat boots. Keep the bird small enough to get through a doorway without a fight.
14. Glam Maleficent Costume With Sequin Gown

Black sequins make her an evening-party villain. A floor-length sequin gown with long sleeves, or a fitted black top under a sleeveless one, with a sheer cape over it so the sparkle still shows through. Glossy black horns, a smooth head wrap and long satin gloves. Luminous foundation, sculpted cheeks, shimmering gray eyes, big lashes and a glossy red lip. One purple jewelled ring. Platform heels with ankle straps, or block-heel boots if the gown covers your feet. Sequins can scratch the inner arm and the underside of a cape, so I'd check the lining before committing to a whole night in one.
15. Gothic Maleficent Costume With Lace Dress

A black lace maxi dress gives a romantic gothic Maleficent. Look for long lined sleeves, a high neck and a flowing skirt. I keep the cape solid black so the lace isn't competing with more pattern, and finish the head with matte curved horns over a fitted lace-edged hood. A pale complexion, charcoal shadow, raised brows, precise liner and a deep berry lip. Black lace gloves and an oval ring. Low-heeled lace-up ankle boots. A small feather piece at the shoulder adds character without hiding the dress. On a cool night, lace over a lining is surprisingly warm.
16. Renaissance Maleficent Costume With Bell Sleeves

A historical take: a black Renaissance-style gown with a square neckline, fitted bodice and wide bell sleeves. Add a detachable standing collar lined in deep purple and a narrow cape from the shoulders. Horns wrapped in twisted fabric suit the old-world shape, with hair under a black coif or smooth wrap. Soft matte makeup, angled brows, gray contour, plum shadow and red lips. A raven brooch and a dark stone ring. Flat lace-up boots for grass and stone paths. Bell sleeves drag through food, so I pin them up at the elbow while eating.
17. Steampunk Maleficent Costume With Corset

Steampunk Maleficent mixes Victorian layers with brass. A high-neck black blouse, a corset-style vest and a long layered skirt, with a cropped purple-lined cape. Horns get lightweight bands of bronze-painted foam, and small smooth gears can go at the horn base, collar and belt. I stick to one metal tone, bronze or copper, because mixing silver, gold and brass muddles a black palette fast. Warm metallic shadow, high contour, black liner and dark red lips. Fingerless gloves, a belt pouch, lace-up Victorian boots, and a raven with tiny faux mechanical details.
18. Punk Maleficent Costume With Leather Jacket

Punk gives her a leather jacket and an attitude. A fitted black faux-leather jacket, ripped black jeans and a long detachable half-cape, with pointed shoulder pieces in flexible foam and compact ridged horns that stay put when you move. A slicked-back black wig or tight braids can stand in for the hood. Bold winged liner, cool contour, dark brows and burgundy lips. Studded cuffs, a raven patch and platform combat boots. Keep any metal rounded and light. It's the version I'd suggest for a concert or a bar, where a gown is a nuisance; the horns and the cape still say who you are.
19. Futuristic Maleficent Costume With Metallic Details

A fitted black jumpsuit is a clean starting point for a futuristic take. Silver piping at the shoulders and waist, a translucent black cape with an architectural raised collar, and streamlined horns painted metallic charcoal. Hide the hair under a smooth black cap. Silver-gray shadow, geometric liner, cool high contour and glossy dark red lips. Mirrored ear cuffs, fitted gloves, a narrow reflective belt and black platform ankle boots. I keep the metallics to silver and charcoal only. Add any more and she starts to look like a generic space costume.
20. Maleficent Costume With Black Pantsuit

Trousers make her feel like a CEO villain. A long blazer with sharp shoulders and matching wide-leg trousers over a purple or black high-neck top. Drape a removable cape from the shoulders and attach a small standing collar to the blazer. Curved horns, slicked-back hair and pointed ear cuffs. Sculpted cheeks, arched brows, clean liner and a red lip. Black gloves, a statement ring and pointed block-heel boots. If you clip the collar on, not sew it, the suit goes straight back to normal wear afterwards. Great for the office or anyone who simply prefers trousers.
21. Maleficent Costume With Black Jumpsuit

A long-sleeve black jumpsuit is about the easiest thing to move in. Choose a wide-leg cut so it echoes a gown when you stand still, and add a waist-length capelet with a high purple-lined collar. A light horn headband over a fitted black turban gives the head shape without fuss. Pale foundation, gray contour, defined brows, winged liner and a satin red lip. Long gloves and a raven on the shoulder. Platform boots under the wide legs. I'd pick this for anyone dancing or on their feet all night, where a big skirt would get in the way.
22. Maleficent Costume With Mini Dress And Tights

A structured black mini dress can carry her if the rest of you is covered. Look for long sleeves with strong shoulders or a high neck. A short purple-lined cape, a small raised collar and medium curved horns. Tuck the hair under a smooth black wrap. Dramatic liner, sharp brows, contour and a bright red lip. Long gloves and thick opaque tights with knee-high flat boots keep you warm. I like the balance of short dress and long gloves and boots; the line still reads long. A raven-shaped bag holds your phone, and it's easy to get through a crowd.
23. Maleficent Costume With Tulle Skirt

Layered black tulle adds volume and bounce without a formal gown. Pair it with a fitted long-sleeve bodysuit or high-neck top and a wide black belt at the waist. A shoulder cape with a dramatic purple collar and a light horn headpiece. A sleek bun under a black head wrap. Cool contour, lifted liner, strong brows and a red lip. Black gloves and a feather wrist cuff. Fitted ankle boots stop the tulle catching under your feet. Cheap tulle is scratchy against bare legs, so I line the skirt with a soft slip, which also stops it going see-through in flash photos.
24. Maleficent Costume With Velvet Cape

Let the cape do the work. A simple fitted black maxi dress under a full-length black velvet cape, ideally lined in plum or purple. I stiffen the collar with a light interfacing so it stands up but still bends when you sit back in a chair. Satin-wrapped horns and a smooth fitted hood. Luminous skin, precise contour, smoky eyes, arched brows and a red lip. Elbow-length gloves, a jewelled clasp and black heeled boots. Because the cape carries the drama, the dress underneath can be cheap and plain. Velvet earns its keep on a chilly night outdoors.
25. Maleficent Costume With Hooded Cloak

A hooded cloak is warm and mysterious, and it hides whatever's underneath. Wear it over a fitted black dress, a long tunic with leggings or a thermal set. I cut two small slits in the hood so the horn headband pokes through and the fabric settles around the base naturally. A purple lining or collar gives contrast. Pale foundation, lifted brows, winged liner, gray contour and deep red lips. Black gloves and weather-resistant knee-high boots. A light raven on the shoulder. It's my pick for a parent walking kids around the neighbourhood, because a coat and sweater fit right under it.
26. Winter Maleficent Costume With Faux Fur Collar

This is for genuinely cold nights. A black sweater dress or thermal maxi with thick leggings underneath, and a long black cape with black or charcoal faux fur around the raised collar. Medium horns on a padded headband, covered by a warm black hood. Cool contour, strong brows, black liner and berry-red lips. Insulated gloves with a dark ring worn over one, and a small raven brooch. Waterproof boots with real grip. Faux fur at the collar sheds onto dark lipstick, so I give it a brush and a lint roll before getting dressed. She still looks regal, and you can stay out the whole parade.
27. Summer Maleficent Costume With Lightweight Dress

Heat is the problem with most versions of her, so this one strips back. A sleeveless black maxi in breathable cotton, rayon or light jersey, a short sheer cape instead of a heavy one, and a standing collar cut from thin flexible felt. Hollow foam horns on a ventilated headband, no full hood. Pull the hair into a low bun and wrap just the hairline in a narrow black scarf. Tinted moisturiser, powder contour, waterproof liner and a long-wear red stain. Thin fingerless gloves and flat sandals with supportive straps. I'd carry a raven wristlet rather than a large prop.
28. Easy DIY Maleficent Costume With Closet Basics

A black turtleneck and long black skirt are already most of the way there. Tuck the top in, add a wide belt and drape a black scarf over the shoulders as a cape. The horns are the project: cut them from flexible foam or foil-covered cardboard, wrap them with black tape or ribbon, and fix them to a padded headband with a scarf over the base. Angled brows, gray contour, winged liner and a red lip. Black gloves, ankle boots and a craft-store raven. I'd make the horns a day ahead, because a rushed pair always sits crooked.
29. Last-Minute Maleficent Costume With Black Dress

Tonight? Any black midi or maxi dress you own will do. Add a ready-made horn headband, or small paper horns wrapped in black tape, and a black shawl pinned at the neck with a dark brooch as the cape. Pull the hair into a tight bun or cover it with a wide black headband. Spend your time on the makeup: high contour, arched brows, long black liner and a bright red lip are what people read first. Black tights, ankle boots or flats, and one extra clue such as a raven toy, a purple ring or a feather. Twenty minutes, honestly.
30. Budget Maleficent Costume Under Simple Layers

Keeping it cheap is mostly about what you buy secondhand. A thrifted black dress and a secondhand cape, with long sleeves, high necks or strong shoulders where you can find them, since those need the least altering. Make the horns from cardboard or foam on a headband you already own, with a black scarf over the base instead of a proper hood. Raised brows, contour, smoky eyes and red lips from your own makeup bag. Plain gloves and boots from your wardrobe. Purple fabric remnants or ribbon on the collar. A raven silhouette printed and mounted on stiff card works as the prop.
31. Thrifted Maleficent Costume With Vintage Dress

Thrift stores are full of Maleficent if you look in the right places. I check for vintage black gowns, choir robes, graduation gowns and long formal dresses with interesting necklines. Belt the dress to fit, then add a handmade standing collar and a purple cape lining. Horns wrapped in strips of leftover black fabric. A thrifted scarf tied closely around the head. Matte foundation, exaggerated contour, thin arched brows, dark liner and berry lips. Vintage gloves, a big costume ring and secondhand lace-up boots. A feather brooch or small raven at the shoulder. Older garments have sleeve and closure details you won't find in a packaged costume.
32. No-Sew Maleficent Costume With Draped Cape

No stitching here, just ties, clips and fabric tape. A fitted black maxi with a big rectangle of black fabric draped over the shoulders, held under a wide removable collar with hidden clips or strong fashion tape. A strip of purple goes along the inside edge with washable adhesive strips. Foam horns on a headband, the base wrapped in a black scarf. Sculpted contour, pointed brows, black liner and red lips. Long gloves, a costume ring and black boots. Test fashion tape on a hidden spot first; some tapes leave residue on velvet and satin.
33. Comfortable Maleficent Costume With Leggings

Thick black leggings and a long high-neck tunic make a costume you could sleep in. Add a soft open-front cape that ends below the knee but clears the floor. Small foam horns on a wide padded headband with a stretchy black wrap over the base. Strong brows, light contour, winged liner and a red tinted balm. Soft gloves and a light feather scarf. Cushioned combat boots or supportive sneakers hidden under simple black boot cuffs. A compact raven pin means nothing to carry. I'd send anyone with a long walk or a theme-park day to this version first.
34. Work-Friendly Maleficent Costume With Midi Dress

For the office, think of her as a well-dressed boss with horns. A modest black midi with long sleeves and a high neck, and a tailored capelet that ends above the elbows so it doesn't catch on chair arms. Small curved horns on a secure headband over a neat low bun. Defined brows, soft gray contour, a short wing and a muted red lip. A purple brooch, black tights and low block-heel ankle boots. Leave wings and long props at home in a shared workspace. A small raven pin on the collar is all the extra you need.
35. School-Friendly Maleficent Costume With Tunic

Schools usually want costumes kids can sit and move in, and this one handles both. A long black tunic over leggings, a soft knee-length cape with purple lining, and a felt collar that bends when the child leans back in a chair. Small light horns with rounded tips on a comfortable headband. Braid the hair or tuck it under a wide black wrap. Defined brows, gentle gray shadow, a tiny liner wing and a berry balm. Fingerless gloves and flat lace-up boots or black sneakers. A plush raven clipped to the shoulder. I'd check the school's rules on face makeup before the day.
36. Teen Maleficent Costume With Pleated Skirt

Teens mostly want her to look like an outfit, not a bedsheet. A black pleated midi skirt with a fitted mock-neck top, a cropped capelet with a tall purple-lined collar, and medium foam horns over a sleek ponytail or low bun, a narrow wrap hiding the headband. Softly sculpted cheeks, bold brows, a black wing and a berry-red lip. Opaque tights and platform combat boots. Black gloves and a raven crossbody bag for the phone. The skirt, top and boots all go back into the wardrobe the next day, which parents tend to appreciate.
37. Kids Maleficent Costume With Soft Cape

With kids, comfort and soft materials make every decision. A soft black long-sleeve dress with leggings underneath, and a short cape with a flexible purple collar that can't end up under their feet. Plush horns with rounded ends on a fabric-covered headband; a hard plastic headband pinches behind the ears within an hour. Hair in a simple bun or under a stretchy black cap. Use children's face products only, patch-tested first: a little gray shadow, defined brows and a berry balm. Soft gloves, flat boots or sneakers, and a plush raven carried or attached firmly at the shoulder.
38. Plus-Size Maleficent Costume With Empire-Waist Gown

An empire waist gives a flowing, comfortable base that still looks dramatic. Choose soft stretch fabric and sleeves with the coverage you like. I'd fasten the cape at the shoulders rather than at the throat, so it doesn't drag across the neck all night. A broad standing collar frames the face, and the horns should be scaled up a touch so they balance a fuller figure; small horns look a bit lost. Luminous foundation, lifted contour, sharp brows, winged liner and a rich red lip. Comfortable long gloves, a statement ring, wide-fit block-heel boots or flats, and a raven brooch so your hands are free.
39. Maternity Maleficent Costume With Stretch Maxi Dress

A soft black maternity maxi gives you her long outline with plenty of room. Breathable stretch fabric, a light cape from the shoulders left open at the front, and a flexible collar that frames the face without pressing on the neck. Small foam horns cut the weight on your head, and a wide padded band helps more. Soft contour, arched brows, winged liner and a long-wear red lip; I'd patch-test anything new, since skin can get touchy in pregnancy. A purple sash above the bump, loose gloves and supportive flats or low boots. A tiny raven brooch is all the prop you need.
40. Modest Maleficent Costume With Long-Sleeve Abaya

A full-length black abaya or loose long-sleeve maxi is a natural fit for her, and very elegant. Add a detachable shoulder cape with purple lining and a tall structured collar that stands slightly away from the face. Coordinate a smooth black head covering with lightweight horns on their own padded band worn over it. I'd anchor the band with hidden pins or a soft strap at the back rather than visible pins. Defined brows, cool contour, black liner and deep red or berry lips. Loose gloves, a dark ring and flat ankle boots. A feather brooch can replace any handheld prop.
41. Men’s Maleficent Costume With Long Black Coat

For a men's Maleficent, start from a long structured black coat. Wear it over a high-neck shirt and fitted black trousers, then attach a short cape or shoulder mantle lined in purple. Large ridged horns suit the broad shape of a long coat, with a fitted black hood over the base. Cool contour, angled brows, smoky liner, and a dark red lip if you want it. Black gloves, a statement ring and polished combat boots. A small raven on one shoulder. The structure of the coat is what turns this from horns-and-black-clothes into the actual character.
42. Gender-Swap Maleficent Costume With Tailcoat

A black tailcoat and trousers give a gender-swapped version real movement. A fitted purple waistcoat or high-neck shirt underneath, a raised black collar around the shoulders, and curved horns over slicked-back hair or a close black cap. Makeup can be light or full, but arched brows, lifted contour, black liner and a deep red lip make the clearest link. Fitted gloves, a raven lapel pin and pointed black boots. A removable half-cape fixed under the collar adds swing without hiding the tails. Suits a costume ball or a stylish party.
43. Drag Maleficent Costume With Dramatic Makeup

Drag Maleficent is about scale. A fitted black gown with exaggerated shoulders, a big removable cape, and tall lightweight horns balanced on a reinforced headpiece, with a smooth wig cap or sculpted updo hiding the fixings. The face is the show: lifted brows, a precise cut crease, long liner, full lashes, carved contour and glossy crimson lips. Long gloves, oversized rings and platform boots sturdy enough to walk in. Feather trim at the shoulders. I'd do a full dress rehearsal with horns, shoes and cape on together, since tall horns plus a heavy cape can pull you off balance.
44. Maleficent Ballerina Costume With Black Tutu

Ballet gives her a graceful, dark-fairy twist. A fitted long-sleeve leotard with a layered black midi tutu, purple tulle hidden underneath for a flash of colour, and a short pointed cape at the shoulders. Slim curved horns on a light headband over a sleek ballet bun. Lifted liner, arched brows, delicate contour and a red lip. Black wrist gloves and a raven feather brooch. Skip real pointe shoes unless you're trained in them; ballet flats with crossed ribbons or low dance sneakers look right and keep your feet happy. Lovely for a dance event or anywhere a long gown would be awkward.
45. Maleficent Doll Costume With Babydoll Dress

A babydoll dress makes a doll-like, slightly creepy Maleficent. Long puffed sleeves, a high collar and a skirt that ends near the knee, with a small purple-lined cape, opaque tights and polished platform Mary Janes. Medium horns over a smooth black bob wig or tightly wrapped hair. Doll makeup: a matte base, round blush, sharply arched brows, an exaggerated wing and a neat red lip. Black gloves and a tiny raven purse. Keep the palette strictly black and purple. Add pink or white and she drifts into a generic gothic doll that nobody can name.
46. Maleficent Masquerade Costume With Eye Mask

Masquerade adds mystery. A floor-length black satin gown, a dramatic cape and a black eye mask with subtly pointed edges. The mask has to sit under the horns without the two fighting, so I try them on together and check I can still see my feet on stairs. A satin wrap covers the hairline and a tall purple-backed collar frames the face. Smoky eyes, high contour, arched brows and red lips around the mask. Elbow-length gloves, a dark jewelled ring and stable block-heel boots. A feather on the mask nods to the raven.
47. Maleficent Costume Without A Cape

You don't need a cape if the dress has enough shape of its own. Choose a black gown with large structured shoulders, long bell sleeves and a flared floor-length skirt, and attach a tall removable collar straight onto the neckline. Oversized curved horns over a close black hood, sculpted cheeks, raised brows, winged liner and glossy red lips. Long gloves and feather cuffs add movement where a cape would normally swing. Black platform boots and a raven at the waist or shoulder. I'd choose this for a seated dinner or a packed venue; capes get sat on and stepped on.
48. Maleficent Costume Without Green Face Paint

Plenty of people would rather skip green paint, and she's still unmistakable without it. A black high-neck gown, a purple-lined cape, a pointed collar, a fitted hood and curved horns. Use your usual foundation, then put the work into lifted contour, thin arched brows, long black liner and a vivid red lip. A cool gray shadow and a little highlight above the cheekbones sharpen the angles. Long gloves, a purple ring, a raven and pointed ankle boots. It's easier to remove, won't wreck your collar, and suits sensitive skin or a work event.
49. Maleficent Costume With Purple Makeup

Purple can carry the colour instead of green. A fitted black dress, matching cape and raised collar lined in violet satin, with curved black horns and a smooth head wrap. On the eyes, lavender across the lids, deep plum in the crease and sharp black liner, with bright red or berry lips. A little violet highlight at the temples, keeping the rest of the skin natural. Purple gloves, a dark stone ring and black heeled boots. A raven brooch connects it all. Purple shows up better than you'd expect under bright party lighting and in photos.
50. Deluxe Maleficent Costume With Gown, Wings, And Horns

This is the everything version: a structured black velvet gown, a purple-lined cape, light feather wings and large textured horns. The gown needs a fitted bodice, strong shoulders and a skirt full enough to balance the width of the wings. A black hood covers the hair, and a tall pointed collar frames the face. Luminous foundation, sharp lifted contour, angled brows, smoky liner and a polished red lip. Long gloves, a jewelled ring, pointed ear cuffs and platform boots. Carry the branch staff only if there's room. I'd build it so the wings come off in seconds, because you will want them off for the car, the chair and the bathroom.
Green Skin That Stays on Your Face and Off Your Gown
If you're going for the animated look, the green is a commitment. I'm not a special effects artist, and you don't need one; you need a skin-safe face paint, patience, and a plan for your collar. Patch-test the paint on the inside of your wrist the day before. Some green pigments irritate sensitive skin, and you want to find that out at home.
- Start with clean, moisturised skin and a thin primer, so the paint grips and doesn't settle into dry patches.
- Apply the green in thin layers with a damp sponge, building up colour rather than painting it on thick. Thick layers crack once your face moves.
- Press translucent powder over it, then let it sit for a few minutes before you touch anything.
- Do your face before your hair goes up and before you step into the gown, then put the dress on over a scarf wrapped around your neck and face.
Black fabric hides a lot, but green on a black collar still shows under flash. A high collar that stands away from the jaw helps, and so does stopping the paint just above the jawline and blending down with a little powder. At the end of the night, take it off with an oil-based cleanser or makeup remover first, then wash. Scrubbing with soap alone just smears it into your hairline.
And if green paint sounds like too much, several looks above skip it entirely. Sharp contour and a strong red lip carry her just as well.
Horns, Collar, Then Everything Else
Look back over all fifty and the pattern is simple: curved horns, a collar that stands up, black clothing and a touch of purple. Get those right and she works on a velvet gown, a jumpsuit or a thrifted choir robe. Wings, ravens, feathers and woodland trim are extras, and every one of them should stay light and easy to take off. Before you settle on a version, think about the weather, how far you'll walk and any dress code, then pick the one you'll still be comfortable in at midnight. Green skin or not, a coordinated head-to-toe look is what makes her read.
