This fall's casual pieces are friendlier than most years. Chore coats, barn jackets, burgundy, suede, leather, relaxed tailoring and a bit of preppy knitwear are all around, and almost none of it needs a special occasion. I put together the fifteen everyday outfits below for the days most people actually dress for: coffee runs, school drop-offs, casual offices, weekends and travel. Many of them start from basics you already own, with one seasonal piece added. Where it matters, I've noted the fit check I'd do first, who a look doesn't suit, and how to change the fabric weight or shoes for your own climate and routine.

Burgundy, Brown and Camel Against Your Own Coloring
This season leans heavily on warm colors, and they don't flatter everyone near the face. I don't think you need a full color analysis to wear them well. A quick mirror test in daylight tells you most of what you need.
- Hold each color under your chin by a window. If shadows under your eyes look deeper or your skin looks gray, that shade belongs below the waist.
- Burgundy suits more people than bright red, because it's darker and softer. If it still looks heavy on you, try a berry or wine with a little more blue in it.
- Camel and tan can wash out very fair or cool skin. Put a white or cream tee between the camel and your face.
- Chocolate brown is often a gentler alternative to black for people whose black clothing makes them look tired.
- Rust and olive tend to flatter warm and olive skin especially well.
Trousers, skirts, shoes and bags can be any of these colors regardless, since they're far from the face.
1. Barn Jacket Fall Outfit With Straight-Leg Jeans

Barn jackets are the outerwear I'd buy first this season if you only buy one. Olive, tan or dark brown go with nearly everything. The usual problem is length: a long, boxy barn jacket on a smaller frame swallows the legs, so look for one that ends near the upper hip. Under it, a fitted cream crewneck or a white long-sleeve tee, with medium-wash straight jeans to balance the roomy shape. Brown loafers keep it polished; retro sneakers suit a long walking day. A structured crossbody, small gold earrings, and a thin scarf once it's cold.
2. Oversized Blazer Fall Outfit With T-Shirt And Jeans

An oversized blazer turns a tee and jeans into something you can wear to a meeting, in about thirty seconds. The trick with oversized is that the shoulder seam should still sit at or just past your shoulder, not halfway down your arm. Charcoal, chocolate or a quiet plaid over a white or gray crewneck tee and clean dark straight jeans. Leather sneakers by day, loafers when you want it sharper. Petite women: push the sleeves up and wear ankle-length denim so the blazer doesn't overwhelm the whole frame. A slim belt over the tee adds shape. Roomy tote, small hoops or a watch.
3. Burgundy Sweater Fall Outfit With Wide-Leg Jeans

Burgundy behaves almost like a neutral next to denim, which is why it's such an easy way into this season's colors. A soft crewneck or V-neck with high-rise wide-leg jeans. A front tuck gives you a waist; worn loose, it's more relaxed. Chocolate ankle boots with a low block heel and a matching bag keep the palette warm. Gold jewelry warms the red further, silver cools it down. If wide legs feel like too much fabric, a fitted sweater and jeans that skim the leg do the same job with less volume. A camel coat over it on cold days, and it goes from work to dinner without a change.
4. Suede Jacket Fall Outfit With Black Trousers

Suede gives plain black trousers the texture they're missing. Cropped or hip-length in camel, tobacco or deep brown over a fitted black turtleneck and straight or softly wide black trousers. Black loafers for polish, cream sneakers for a lighter feel. Real suede spots and darkens in rain and is slow to recover, so I treat this as a dry-day outfit, or suggest a suede-look fabric for anyone who walks a lot in drizzle. A compact leather bag, small earrings, and a slim belt if the trousers have loops. Every piece here also works on its own later in the week.
5. Chunky Cardigan Fall Outfit With Satin Midi Skirt

Chunky knit against a satin skirt is a nice contrast, but there's a catch: bulk at the top makes the hips look wider unless the skirt drapes well. Pick a cardigan in oatmeal, gray, forest green or chocolate, and a satin midi in black, bronze or muted olive that falls straight rather than flaring. A fitted tank underneath lets you take the cardigan off indoors. Low sneakers keep it casual, ankle boots add warmth. Choose a crossbody that sits above the skirt's widest point. Buttoning one or two center buttons gives some waist. Add opaque tights when it cools.
6. Denim-On-Denim Fall Outfit With Ankle Boots

Denim on denim works when the two washes are clearly different. A medium-blue chambray shirt with dark indigo jeans looks deliberate; two almost-matching blues look like a mistake. Start with a relaxed button-down and straight jeans, then add brown or black ankle boots, a leather belt and a structured shoulder bag. Roll the sleeves in early fall and add a fitted turtleneck underneath later. If you're curvy, an open shirt over a tucked tank is often more comfortable than a full tuck; for definition, tuck the shirt into high-rise jeans. A camel coat or quilted vest goes over without fuss.
7. Trench Coat Fall Outfit With Hoodie And Leggings

A trench over a hoodie and leggings is the outfit I'd give anyone who wants to wear comfortable clothes but still look like they made an effort. The leggings have to be thick and opaque; thin ones look like gym wear under a good coat. Gray, navy or cream hoodie, tan trench left open for a long line. White sneakers when it's dry, weather-resistant trainers on damp days. Crew socks, a cap, a nylon crossbody. If you want more coverage, a knee-length trench and a hoodie that covers the hip. When a hood bunches at the trench collar, a fitted sweatshirt sits flatter.
8. Sweater Vest Fall Outfit With Button-Down And Jeans

Sweater vest over a button-down is the easiest preppy outfit to wear casually, because the jeans do the relaxing. Solid camel, burgundy, navy or charcoal over a crisp white or pale blue shirt. Let the shirt tail hang below the vest for a loose look, or tuck both into high-rise denim for more waist; tucking two layers adds bulk at the waistband, so the shirt should be thin cotton. Loafers, ballet flats or sneakers depending on how much walking you're doing. Structured satchel, stud earrings. A wool coat or oversized blazer over it once it's cold.
9. Leather Jacket Fall Outfit With Knit Dress And Sneakers

A knit midi dress with a leather jacket and sneakers is one piece of thinking in the morning and done. Ribbed black, gray, olive or warm brown, following the body without gripping it. A cropped or hip-length leather jacket gives the shoulders structure. Ribbed knits can show every line underneath, so I'd check it in daylight before leaving. White or retro sneakers for walking, ankle boots for cold. A belt under the jacket adds definition, and a side slit makes walking easier. A crossbody and simple hoops. Good for travel days and lunch.
10. Utility Jacket Fall Outfit With Striped Tee And Chinos

Olive utility jacket, striped tee, chinos. Structured enough to look finished, relaxed enough for a day of errands. Navy-and-white or black-and-cream stripes go under the jacket, with tan, khaki or dark green straight chinos. Wear the jacket open and push the sleeves up so the stripes show at the wrist. Leather sneakers, loafers or clogs. A drawstring waist on the jacket gives shape if you want it. Cuffing the chinos once to show the ankle lightens the whole thing. Canvas tote, crossbody or small backpack.
11. Plaid Shacket Fall Outfit With Turtleneck And Jeans

A plaid shacket over a fitted turtleneck feels very fall, and the plaid does all the work, so keep the rest simple. Choose a pattern with brown, rust, cream, navy or forest green, and a black, ivory or chocolate turtleneck. Dark straight jeans and sturdy ankle boots. Scale matters: an oversized shacket wants slimmer jeans, while relaxed denim wants a shorter, lighter shacket. Shackets are usually flannel or a brushed wool blend, so they're warm enough for mild days on their own but not as a coat in real cold. Compact crossbody, a beanie or a cap. Road trips and outdoor weekends.
12. Leopard Cardigan Fall Outfit With Relaxed Denim

Leopard acts like a neutral once everything around it is plain. A smaller brown-and-black print on a cardigan, over a black fitted tee, with relaxed blue jeans. Black loafers make it sharper, white sneakers make it playful. Keep the bag plain black or dark brown and skip other prints. If a full leopard cardigan feels bold, start with one that has the print only on the trim, or a muted tonal version. The larger the spots, the louder it reads, so beginners should go small.
13. Monochrome Brown Fall Outfit With Knit Top And Trousers

Tonal brown is the quickest way to look pulled together, and texture is what keeps it from going flat. Fitted cocoa or taupe knit, chocolate wide-leg trousers, a camel cardigan or coat. Dark brown loafers, boots or suede sneakers, and a tan bag for slight contrast. Mix smooth trousers with ribbed knit, suede or soft wool; all one flat fabric looks like a uniform. Some people find head-to-toe brown makes them look tired, especially with cool coloring, so I'd put cream near the face with a scarf or an ivory tee under the knit. One long color line also makes you look taller. Works for the office and a dinner out.
14. Denim Midi Skirt Fall Outfit With Sweater And Knee-High Boots

A denim midi skirt is my go-to recommendation for anyone bored of jeans who still wants something that washes easily. Straight or gently A-line, with a soft crewneck in cream, burgundy, gray or olive. Knee-high boots tuck just under the hem so there's no awkward gap of leg; I always check this sitting down, because skirts ride up. Sleek leather boots for polish, flat riding boots for comfort. A front slit stops stiff denim from shortening your stride. Partial tuck, or a shorter sweater left out. Opaque tights and a tailored coat or quilted jacket for cold days.
15. Chore Coat Fall Outfit With Sweatshirt And Barrel Jeans

Chore coat, crewneck sweatshirt, barrel jeans: a practical uniform for busy fall days. Sturdy cotton in navy, olive, tan or faded brown over a gray or cream sweatshirt. Barrel jeans curve out at the knee and back in at the ankle, so they already add volume; keep the sweatshirt fairly trim or give it a small front tuck. They're also not for everyone, and if the curve makes your legs look shorter, straight or slightly tapered denim works just as well. Hems at the ankle so the shoes show. Retro sneakers, sturdy loafers or low boots. A canvas tote and cap, or a leather shoulder bag to smarten it.
A Jacket Rotation From September to December
Half the outfits above are really the same base clothes under a different jacket. If you plan the jackets by temperature, you can wear the same jeans, knits and tees from the first cool morning until it's properly cold.
- Mild days: denim jacket, utility jacket or shacket over a tee or thin knit.
- Cool, dry days: barn jacket, chore coat, suede or leather over a sweater or turtleneck.
- Rainy days: a trench, which handles light rain far better than suede or an unwaxed cotton jacket.
- Cold days: a wool coat over a blazer or chunky cardigan, which is when the layers in this list really earn their keep.
Try each jacket on over your thickest sweater before you buy it. A jacket that only fits over a tee covers about three weeks of fall.
Barn Jacket or Chore Coat?
They're easy to confuse. A barn jacket usually has a corduroy collar, a lining and sometimes a waxed or heavy canvas shell, so it's warmer and shrugs off a light shower. A chore coat is a simpler workwear jacket, typically unlined cotton twill with patch pockets on the front. The chore coat is the better choice for mild days and layering over a sweater; the barn jacket goes further into cold weather. If you can only have one and you live somewhere damp, I'd choose the barn jacket.
Add One Seasonal Piece to Clothes You Already Wear
Comfortable, practical and still interesting to look at is a reasonable goal for everyday fall clothes. Start with the outfits that fit your actual routine, then change colors, proportions and layers to suit your body and your weather. A barn jacket, relaxed denim, soft knits, one tailored coat, a midi skirt and a good pair of boots will make far more combinations than this list. You don't need a new wardrobe. Add the one or two pieces that connect with what's already in your closet, and wear them often.
