Dressing a plus size pregnancy in fall is harder than it should be. Extended maternity sizing is thin on the ground, and most of what you find online is single pieces with no idea how to wear them together. So I've built full outfits instead, head to toe, around the things that matter to a growing body: waistbands that support rather than squeeze, layers that open over the bump, and fabrics that breathe when you're running warm in a heated room. You'll find looks for errands, the office and seasonal gatherings. Check each brand's measurements rather than the size label, and give extra weight to pieces you'll still wear after the baby arrives.

Over the Bump or Under It
The waistband is the most important decision in any maternity bottom, and for plus size bodies it's where most of the discomfort starts. These are the styles you'll see and how they tend to behave.
- Full panel: a stretch knit panel that comes up over the whole bump. It stays put, gives gentle support and is my usual recommendation for plus size pregnancies.
- Under-bump: a low, curved waistband that sits beneath the belly. Comfortable for some, but on a lower-hanging belly it can roll or slide down.
- Side panels: stretch inserts at the hips with a regular front. Useful early on, often outgrown by the third trimester.
- Belly band: a separate tube of stretch fabric worn over unbuttoned regular pants. Good for the first few months before you need maternity sizes.
Most maternity brands are designed to be bought in your pre-pregnancy size, but plus size bodies don't always follow that. Hip and thigh measurements matter as much as the bump, so if a chart gives them, compare yours and size by the largest one.
1. Plus Size Maternity Leggings And Cardigan Outfit

Leggings and a long cardigan is the outfit I see pregnant clients live in, and with good reason. Black over-the-bump leggings and a long cotton maternity tee in white, gray or olive give you a soft base. The leggings deserve the most attention: a wide belly panel that lies flat, and fabric dense enough to stay opaque when it stretches over the hips. An open cardigan that ends below the hip makes a long line on either side of the bump, and side slits stop it from catching when you sit. Cushioned white sneakers suit errands and appointments. Switch to flat ankle boots and a scarf on colder days.
2. Plus Size Maternity Jeans And Sweater Outfit

Maternity jeans with a full panel are the ones I'd suggest first for most plus size bodies, because an under-bump band can roll down beneath a lower belly. Straight or slim legs both work. On top, a soft crewneck in rust, forest green, camel or burgundy should be long enough to cover the panel and loose enough to clear the bump without stretching tight across it. Chunky knits add a lot of volume to a pregnant frame, so a fine-gauge sweater usually looks and feels better. Wide-fit ankle boots, a structured tote and small hoops complete it for casual offices, lunch or shopping.
3. Plus Size Maternity Sweater Dress And Boots Outfit

A maternity sweater dress is the easiest way to look dressed without thinking about separates. Pick a knee-length or midi design with stretch at the bust, hips and bump. Ribbed knits hug and show your shape; draped knits give more room, and both are good choices depending on how you feel that day. Opaque maternity tights keep you warm, and wide-calf knee-highs or low ankle boots finish it, ideally with a zip, since bending to pull on boots gets harder each month. A belt above the bump is optional. Layer a longline coat or open cardigan, and it can go from work to an autumn baby shower.
4. Plus Size Maternity Flannel And Leggings Outfit

An open flannel over a fitted maternity tank is about the most comfortable way to look put together on a weekend. Wear it with full-length maternity leggings and leave the flannel open so the two front edges frame the bump. Black and tan, navy and rust, or green and cream checks are easy to pair. Here's the mistake I see most: sizing up everywhere to fit the belly, which leaves the shoulders hanging and the sleeves past your fingers. Choose a flannel that fits your shoulders and simply never button it. Slip-on sneakers save bending, and a backpack keeps your hands free at markets.
5. Plus Size Maternity Overalls And Long Sleeve Top Outfit

Overalls are a fun break from leggings, and good maternity ones are surprisingly practical because the straps and side buttons adjust as you grow. Look for soft denim or cotton twill with stretch; rigid denim makes sitting uncomfortable as the belly grows. Check room through the hips, thighs and lower belly, and watch the side buttons for pulling when you sit. A fitted striped maternity top underneath balances the volume. Roll the hems slightly and wear white sneakers or flat Chelsea boots. A beanie and small crossbody finish it for orchards, markets and relaxed lunches.
6. Plus Size Maternity Midi Dress And Denim Jacket Outfit

A long-sleeve stretch midi dress with a denim jacket over it covers a lot of fall days. Black, plum, olive or a small print are all easy. Ruched side seams are the detail I look for, because the gathered fabric releases as the bump grows, so the dress keeps fitting for months. A scoop or V-neck keeps the neckline open. Wear the denim jacket unbuttoned, and if your usual one is tight through the back and arms, as it often is when the bust changes, a stretch denim style fixes it. Sneakers for daytime, wide-fit ankle boots for something dressier, plus a pendant and a roomy tote.
7. Plus Size Maternity Work Pants And Blazer Outfit

A work outfit during pregnancy has to look sharp for the meeting and still be bearable by four o'clock. Tapered maternity trousers with an elastic belly panel and room through the hip and thigh are my base. A breathable blouse or fitted knit in ivory, burgundy or deep teal goes under an open ponte blazer, which stretches and doesn't need to close. Good stretch recovery in the trousers keeps the knees and seat from bagging by the afternoon. Wide-fit loafers are kinder than heels, especially if your feet swell later in the day. Add a structured tote and simple metal earrings.
8. Plus Size Maternity Jumpsuit And Cardigan Outfit

A jumpsuit takes the planning out of getting dressed, but maternity jumpsuits have one hidden catch: torso length. As the bump grows, it takes up fabric between shoulder and crotch, and a jumpsuit that fit in month five can pull uncomfortably in month eight. Look for adjustable straps, a wrap neckline or a seam above the bump, and soft jersey with a wide leg. Think about bathroom trips too, since pregnancy means many of them; easy-off styles are worth it. A cropped or hip-length cardigan adds warmth. Platform sneakers, loafers or low block-heel boots and a long necklace finish it.
9. Plus Size Maternity Skirt And Turtleneck Outfit

A pull-on midi skirt and a soft turtleneck feel dressed up while staying gentle on the body. The waistband needs to be flexible enough to sit over or under your bump, whichever is more comfortable that week. Pleated, ribbed and stretch knit skirts all move easily. Pair it with a fitted maternity turtleneck in a neutral or a rich fall shade; if high necks feel suffocating, which they often do when you're running warm, a mock neck does the same job. Flat knee-high boots or supportive ankle boots, a long coat and a top-handle bag complete it for office days and family meals.
10. Plus Size Maternity Tunic And Ponte Pants Outfit

Ponte pants with a long tunic give you the comfort of leggings with more structure, which is handy for work and travel. The ponte's thicker double knit holds its shape through the leg and recovers after sitting. Choose a tunic with side slits, a curved hem or ruching over the bump. Hem placement makes a real difference: a tunic that stops at the fullest point of the bump draws a line right across it, so go longer or wear it with a slight curve. Black pants with a berry, camel, navy or printed tunic work well. Wide-fit loafers, a roomy tote and a scarf finish it.
11. Plus Size Maternity Hoodie And Joggers Outfit

A matching hoodie and jogger set looks deliberate in a way that mismatched loungewear doesn't. Choose joggers with a soft belly panel or adjustable waist and a matching zip hoodie, which is easier to get in and out of than a pullover. Underneath, a fitted maternity tank or a nursing-friendly tee means the outfit keeps working after the birth. Charcoal, navy, chocolate or muted sage keeps it clean. Tapered ankles and real pockets stop it from reading as pajamas. Cushioned sneakers, a cap and a belt bag worn over the shoulder finish it for travel, walks and prenatal appointments.
12. Plus Size Maternity Maxi Dress And Utility Jacket Outfit

A maxi dress with an empire waist gives the bump all the room it needs, and an open utility jacket makes it look like fall. Choose a solid jersey or a small floral with long sleeves. Hem length is a safety question as much as a style one: late in pregnancy you can't see your feet, so the dress should clear the ground in flats to avoid stepping on it on stairs. The utility jacket in olive, khaki or navy only needs to fit the shoulders and arms, since it stays open. Flat ankle boots, a crossbody and simple earrings complete it for gatherings, lunches and outdoor photos.
13. Plus Size Maternity Shirt Dress And Loafers Outfit

A shirt dress is one of the most useful maternity pieces you can buy, mainly because working front buttons make it nursing-friendly afterward. Choose a midi with stretch and side slits, and check the buttons at the bust and bump for gaping when you sit. A removable tie can sit above the bump or come off. Vertical stripes, chambray, navy and earthy solids are the easiest to restyle. Wide-fit loafers and an open lightweight trench finish it, with a structured bag and a watch. It suits business-casual offices, lunch meetings, showers and appointments through the whole season.
14. Plus Size Maternity Knit Set And Sneakers Outfit

A knit set is loungewear that looks put together, which is about as good as pregnancy dressing gets. Wide-leg maternity pants with a soft waistband plus a matching longline sweater or relaxed knit top. A fine-gauge knit lies smoothly and layers under a coat; a chunky one adds a lot of bulk on top of a growing bump. Cream, taupe, chocolate, charcoal or deep green all look rich. Leather-look sneakers, a long wool-blend coat and a structured tote finish it, with a pendant to break up the solid color. Check the pant length with your shoes, since knit hems that drag soon get dirty.
15. Plus Size Maternity Baby Shower Dress And Coat Outfit

For your own baby shower, you want to feel special and still be comfortable through hours of sitting, opening gifts and hugging people. A wrap-style maternity midi, stretch velvet or a softly draped empire-waist dress all give the bump room. Velvet is lovely in fall, with deep color and a soft shine, but it crushes where you sit, so steam it before the party. Jewel tones, warm florals, navy, berry or deep green suit the season. An open tailored coat or long cardigan goes on top, and low block heels or polished ankle boots with a supportive sole handle a long afternoon. Sit in it at home first.
Making a Few Pieces Last From Second Trimester to Postpartum
Maternity clothes have a short life, so I build around pieces that stretch across as many months as possible. Look at the outfits above and you'll notice the same few items doing most of the work.
Buy these early
Full-panel leggings, one pair of maternity jeans or ponte pants and a long open cardigan. They fit from the time regular waistbands get uncomfortable until the end, and they mix with nearly everything.
Wait on these
Dresses for specific events and fitted tops. The bust and bump keep changing, so something bought too early may not fit when the occasion arrives.
Pick for after the birth
Button-front shirt dresses, wrap tops, zip hoodies and anything with easy chest access will work for nursing. Open cardigans and stretch midis tend to stay useful for months postpartum, while your body settles.
Leave room for your feet
Feet often swell during pregnancy, especially later in the day, and some people find their shoe size changes for good. Wide-fit shoes, slip-ons and boots with a side zip spare you a lot of bending and squeezing.
A Fall Pregnancy Wardrobe Built From Whole Outfits
Buying maternity clothes one item at a time is how you end up with pieces that don't go together. Think in complete outfits instead, starting with the ones your daily routine needs most, whether that's the office, weekends or one dressy event like a shower. Lean on flexible basics, warm layers that open and supportive shoes. Measure yourself and compare against each garment's chart, because maternity and plus size sizing vary a lot between brands. And when you're torn between two pieces, pick the one that works postpartum too.
