Skirts get packed away too early every year, and fall is honestly when they're most useful. With the right tights and boots, a skirt handles a cold morning as well as trousers, and it's more comfortable on a mild afternoon. This season the shapes worth knowing are full skirts, sheer layers, skirt suits and glossy leather, alongside the denim and knit skirts most people already own. The work is in the balance: a layer for warmth, shoes that suit the hem, and accessories that look chosen rather than added. Below are fifteen combinations, from casual denim to office tailoring, with notes on what I watch for when I put each one together. Adjust them to your climate, your shape and your week.

Tights Weights and Boot Heights for Skirt Season
Almost every skirt outfit in fall depends on two things you see last: the tights and the boots. Tights are sold by denier, a measure of yarn thickness, and the number tells you more than the word on the packet.
- Around 15 to 20 denier: sheer, for mild days and dressier looks. They ladder easily.
- Around 30 to 50 denier: semi-opaque, a soft tint of leg showing, good for most of the season.
- Around 60 to 100 denier and up: opaque, warm and much more hard-wearing, my pick for minis and cold days.
Then the boot. With a midi, the hem should cover the top of a knee-high boot, so no leg shows when you sit or walk. With ankle boots, a gap of leg between hem and boot is fine, but match the tights to the boot color and the line stays long. The one combination I steer people away from is a mid-calf boot with a hem that ends just above it, since it cuts the leg at its widest point.
1. Denim Midi Skirt With Sweater And Knee-High Boots

A denim midi is the easiest skirt to start a fall wardrobe with, because it treats a sweater the same way jeans do. A dark wash with a fitted cream sweater, and a front slit so you can walk without the hem catching. The slit should land so knee-high leather boots show through it when you step, not stop above them and leave a gap of leg. A tan belt marks the waist, or leave the sweater loose. A chocolate shoulder bag warms up the blue, and a camel wool coat goes over it on cold days. A little stretch in the denim helps on the stairs, but too much and the skirt starts to cling and ride up by the afternoon.
2. Pleated Mini Skirt With Blazer And Loafers

A pleated mini can tip toward school uniform, and a blazer is what pulls it back. Gray, navy or plaid with a fitted mock neck in a neutral, then an oversized blazer over the top for structure and a bit more coverage. Black semi-sheer tights, chunky loafers and ribbed socks finish the preppy idea. The proportion check I do first: the blazer should end at or just above the skirt hem. Longer and the skirt disappears; shorter and the outfit looks cut in two. On colder days, a long wool coat over both. Keep everything in two or three colors so the layers read as one outfit.
3. Leather Pencil Skirt With Turtleneck And Tall Boots

Leather against a fine knit is one of my favorite fall contrasts. A black or deep brown leather pencil skirt in a midi length with a slim turtleneck in cream, burgundy or charcoal. Check the slit before anything else. A pencil skirt without a back or side slit restricts your stride badly, and leather has no give to make up for it. Sleek knee-high boots continue the line, and a tailored coat adds warmth. A structured bag and plain metal jewelry. Good faux leather looks very similar from a distance, though it doesn't soften or mold to you the way real leather does over time.
4. Satin Maxi Skirt With Oversized Sweater And Ankle Boots

A satin maxi brightens a gray day without trying too hard. Bronze, olive, burgundy or black, with an oversized crewneck in a soft neutral and a small front tuck to hint at the waist. The sweater should stop around the hip; one that covers half the skirt hides the shine you bought it for. Pointed ankle boots give the soft skirt something firm to stand on. Here's what most people don't expect: satin and wool generate static, especially in dry heated rooms, so the skirt can cling to the tights. A slip or an anti-static spray solves it. A long coat when it's cold.
5. Full A-Line Skirt With Cardigan And Ballet Flats

The full A-line is one of the shapes this fall leans on most. A midi in crisp cotton, wool blend or structured twill, which hold the volume out rather than collapsing against the legs. Wear a fitted cardigan buttoned up as the top, so the narrow upper half balances the skirt. Pointed ballet flats while it's mild, low-heeled ankle boots later. A slim belt and a small shoulder bag. Chocolate, navy, olive or deep red keep it seasonal. On a shorter frame, a full skirt plus flats can look heavy, so I'd keep the hem just below the knee rather than at mid-calf.
6. Plaid Mini Skirt With Chunky Sweater And Riding Boots

Plaid, chunky knits and tall boots signal fall immediately. A plaid mini in brown, forest green, navy or rust, with a chunky sweater pulled from one of the plaid's quieter colors so it doesn't fight the pattern. A partial tuck keeps the knit from swallowing the short skirt. Opaque tights, flat riding boots and a saddle bag. The thing that tips this into costume is too many matching heritage details at once, so I let the plaid and boots carry it and keep the jacket plain, quilted or a relaxed wool coat. If you want more coverage, a skirt a few inches above the knee works better than a micro-mini.
7. Wool Midi Skirt With Turtleneck And Long Coat

A wool midi is warmer than most people think, and it keeps its shape all day. Charcoal, camel or herringbone with a slim turtleneck that fits under a coat without bulk. A long coat in a related neutral draws one unbroken line from shoulder to hem. Wool skirts are usually lined, which helps them hang over tights rather than catching. Pointed ankle boots for a straight skirt, tall boots for a fuller one. Thin thermal leggings underneath don't change the look at all. Mixing two or three close neutrals gives depth without adding a color.
8. Cargo Maxi Skirt With Bomber Jacket And Sneakers

Would you rather be comfortable and practical? A cargo maxi is the sporty answer. Olive, black or khaki with a straight or slight flare, worn with a fitted long-sleeve tee or ribbed top so the pockets aren't competing with a loose top. A cropped bomber ends at the waist and shows the shape. Retro sneakers for long walking days. Leave the cargo pockets mostly empty, because anything heavy in them pulls the skirt sideways and creates bulk at the thigh. In colder weather, tall socks under the skirt and a fine-knit mock neck instead of the tee.
9. Corduroy Mini Skirt With Denim Shirt And Ankle Boots

Corduroy has an autumn feel all of its own. A mini in rust, chocolate, camel or deep green with a mid-wash denim shirt tucked in, top buttons open over a fitted cotton tank. Dark tights and block-heeled ankle boots. A leather belt and a soft shoulder bag link the browns. A cream cardigan goes over the shirt when it's cooler. Corduroy minis tend to be A-line and fairly stiff, so they stand slightly away from the body; the tucked shirt needs to be thin, or the waist bulks out. It's an early-fall outfit at its best, before heavy coats come out.
10. Slip Skirt With Trench Coat And Sneakers

A slip skirt is a dressy fabric, and putting it with casual layers is what makes it everyday. A black, navy or printed midi slip with a plain white tee or fitted long-sleeve, an open beige trench and clean leather sneakers. A roomy tote for the day. Bias-cut slip skirts skim and move, but they also show every line, so check it in daylight from the back. If it clings tightly at the hip, size up; it should skim, not grip. On a cold morning, a fine-knit cardigan goes under the trench.
11. Suede Midi Skirt With Button-Down Shirt And Western Boots

Suede adds color and a soft nap that no other skirt fabric gives you. A camel, chestnut or deep burgundy midi with a crisp white or pale blue button-down tucked in. Western boots suit it, though a plain pair keeps the skirt wearable with more. Wide leather belt, structured crossbody in a matching brown, gold hoops. Suede is the most delicate skirt here: rain darkens and stiffens it, and it marks easily when you sit on rough surfaces. Treat it with a suede protector before the first wear and brush it after. A denim jacket or tailored blazer on colder afternoons.
12. Sheer Layered Skirt With Turtleneck And Blazer

A sheer skirt is wearable as long as the coverage is planned. The way I see it styled most this fall, the skirt is balanced with a modest top, usually a turtleneck and something tailored. Either buy a lined midi or put an opaque slip under a semi-sheer one, and check the outfit in daylight, since a skirt that looks opaque in a fitting room light can be fairly see-through outdoors. A fitted black turtleneck and an oversized blazer give the soft skirt a sharp frame. Knee-high boots add coverage and warmth. All black is sleek; chocolate or charcoal softer. Keep the bag small.
13. Skirt Suit With Striped Shirt And Pumps

A skirt suit is as professional as trousers and often more comfortable to sit in all day. A matching blazer and midi pencil in navy, gray or a quiet plaid, with a striped button-down under it to break up the solid. Classic pumps or pointed flats for a long day. A structured tote, simple jewelry. Matching pieces need matching care: dry-clean the jacket and skirt together, or the one worn more often fades and they stop looking like a pair. To relax it, push up the sleeves or open the collar. A fitted coat over the top for the commute.
14. Denim Maxi Skirt With Leather Jacket And Boots

For a little edge, a denim maxi with a cropped leather jacket. A dark wash with a front slit or straight cut, a fitted gray or white crewneck, and black ankle boots with a moderate heel to lift the long hem off the ground. Maxi hems drag on wet pavement and fray fastest at the back, so I'd always try the skirt with the exact boots and have it hemmed to clear the floor. A shoulder bag with small hardware and silver earrings. For warmth, swap the cotton top for a thin merino sweater and add opaque tights.
15. Knit Midi Skirt Set With Long Coat And Sneakers

Some mornings call for zero decisions, and a matching knit skirt set is that outfit. A ribbed set in oatmeal, gray, brown, navy or burgundy, with the top ending near the waist so the proportions stay balanced. A long tailored coat gives the soft knit some structure, with clean sneakers and a leather tote. Knit skirts tend to stretch at the seat after a few hours of sitting, so heavier, denser ribs recover better than loose ones. Fold rather than hang knits, or the shoulders stretch. Switch to pointed ankle boots for a dressier day.
Static, Riding Up and Other Skirt Annoyances
Most of the reasons people give up on skirts in fall are small mechanical problems, and nearly all of them have an easy fix.
- Clinging: dry heated air and synthetic tights build static, especially under satin and slip skirts. A half slip, an anti-static spray, or a light layer of lotion on the legs before your tights stops it.
- Riding up: knit and stretch-denim skirts creep upward when they grip the tights. A lined skirt or a slip between the two lets it slide back down.
- Twisting: A-line and bias-cut skirts can spin round the waist through the day. A waistband that fits snugly, or a narrow belt, keeps the side seams where they belong.
- Wind: full and sheer skirts lift in a gust. Opaque tights or fitted bike shorts underneath mean it doesn't matter.
Store skirts by fabric, too. Hang wool, suede and leather on clip hangers so the waistband doesn't stretch, and fold knit skirts in a drawer.
Keep Your Skirts Out Through November
Skirts fit into a cold-weather wardrobe more easily than most people expect. What makes them work is balance: a fitted top with a full skirt, structure against a fluid fabric, and tights or tall boots once it's cold. You don't need every new shape. Start with the skirts you own and bring in seasonal color through sweaters, coats, shoes and bags. Denim, wool, satin, leather, suede and corduroy each behave differently, so pick the ones that suit your weather and routine, and adjust each combination until it's comfortable enough to wear all day.
