A fall trip to Venice asks two things of your clothes: they have to look put-together in one of the most photographed cities in the world, and they have to survive long days on foot over bridges and damp stone. I plan these wardrobes the same way every time. Breathable base layers, light knits, one protective outer layer and shoes that are already broken in, all in a palette that mixes: black, camel, cream, burgundy, olive and navy. Then a small crossbody to keep your phone and cards close. The fifteen outfits below cover canal walks, museums, cafés, shopping and dinner, and I've added the fit or fabric check I'd make on each one before it goes in the case.

Raiding Your Own Wardrobe Before You Shop for Venice
Most of these outfits come from pieces many people already own. Before buying anything for the trip, I'd lay out what you have on the bed and work in this order, because it shows quickly what's missing and what's just a nice extra.
- Shoes first. Pick two pairs you've walked in for a full day without pain, ideally one sneaker and one ankle boot with rubber soles. If you don't own a pair like that, this is the one purchase worth making, and it needs at least a week of wear before you fly.
- Outer layer next. A trench or light coat that closes over a sweater. Try it on over your thickest knit and lift your arms.
- Bottoms. Two or three that work with both shoes: dark jeans, black trousers, maybe one midi skirt. Check the hems with the shoes on.
- Tops and knits. Four or five that go with every bottom. If a top only works with one thing, leave it home.
- Accessories last. Two scarves and one crossbody bag give the same clothes a different look on different days.
When you've finished, anything that only fits into one outfit is a candidate to take out. Gaps that show up two or three times are the ones worth filling.
1. Venice Autumn Trench Coat And Trousers Outfit

A knee-length trench over a light cream sweater and straight black trousers is the cleanest start to a Venice wardrobe. The trench should be water-resistant and fall around the knee without much bulk; a heavily lined one is too warm for a sunny September afternoon. Black leather sneakers keep it comfortable for a long day, and a structured crossbody stops it from sliding into casual. Small gold earrings and a printed scarf tied at the neck or on the bag. If the morning is cool, a thin thermal cami under the sweater is enough. I'd wear this in September and early October, and every piece here mixes with the rest of the list.
2. Venice Autumn Knit Dress And Ankle Boots Outfit

For a one-piece day, I like a long-sleeve knit midi dress in chocolate, charcoal, burgundy or deep olive. It should skim, not cling; if you can see the seams of what's underneath, size up or choose a heavier knit. Opaque tights and waterproof flat ankle boots with grippy soles take care of the walking. A cropped wool jacket or tailored blazer adds warmth and keeps the dress's shape visible, which a long coat would hide. A leather crossbody, simple hoops and a light scarf. Narrow heels are a bad idea on worn stone steps. In November, add a thermal layer and thicker socks and it still works from lunch through dinner.
3. Venice Autumn Midi Skirt And Cardigan Outfit

Pleated midi skirts move well when you walk, which is why I reach for them on travel days more than straight skirts. Black, camel or a quiet autumn print, with a fitted long-sleeve top and a button-front cardigan that comes off when the afternoon warms up. Cushioned leather loafers look neat; slim sneakers are kinder on a long walking day. Fine socks or tights when it's cool. A small shoulder bag, a narrow belt and simple jewelry finish it. Check the hem with your shoes on: if it reaches the ankle, it will catch under your toe on bridge steps and get wet on rainy days. Mid-calf is the safer length.
4. Venice Autumn Leather Jacket And Jeans Outfit

This is my everyday Venice outfit when the weather is undecided. A black or dark brown leather jacket over a soft ivory knit, with straight-leg jeans in a dark or mid wash that goes with most of your tops. Leather sneakers on dry days, low ankle boots if rain is forecast. A burgundy crossbody brings in a fall color, and a light scarf softens things near the face. I buy leather jackets with a little room through the back and shoulders, because a jacket that's fitted over a tee won't close over a sweater. On colder days, a thermal top under the knit adds warmth without changing the look.
5. Venice Autumn Blazer And Wide Leg Trousers Outfit

Tailoring can be comfortable for a day of sightseeing if the fabric is soft and the cut has some ease. A relaxed plaid, navy or camel blazer over a fitted crew-neck knit, with high-waisted wide-leg trousers that end just above the ground. A wool blend or crease-resistant fabric comes out of a suitcase looking far better than pure cotton or linen. White leather sneakers for walking, loafers for something dressier. A compact top-handle crossbody and a silk scarf. If the blazer feels stiff, look for an unlined or half-lined one; it moves with you and folds smaller. It photographs well and stays comfortable through a full schedule.
6. Venice Autumn Raincoat And Black Pants Outfit

A rainy day outfit should still look like you. Mine starts with slim or straight black pants and a light merino sweater in gray, cream or muted blue, under a streamlined hooded raincoat. Merino is the right choice here because it stays warm when damp and doesn't smell after a long day. The raincoat needs to reach at least mid-thigh, or rain runs off the hem straight onto your trousers. Waterproof Chelsea boots with textured soles and socks that can handle damp. A zip crossbody worn close to the body and a patterned scarf for color. Keep trouser hems short enough to stay clear of puddles.
7. Venice Autumn Sweater Vest And Shirt Outfit

A sweater vest over a crisp shirt is a good mild-day outfit, and it's lighter to pack than a full sweater. Cream, camel or argyle over white or pale blue cotton, with straight trousers in chocolate, navy or black. Loafers with visible ankle socks and a compact satchel worn across the body. Carry a light trench for later. The shirt should be relaxed, not oversized; a big shirt bunches under the vest and pulls the armholes out of shape. Roll the cuffs once or twice on a warm afternoon. Shirts crease in a suitcase, so hang this one in the bathroom while you shower and the worst creases drop out.
8. Venice Autumn Denim Jacket And Knit Dress Outfit

Early autumn is a good time to keep wearing a favorite knit dress with a lighter layer on top. A ribbed midi in black, rust, forest green or warm taupe, with a mid-wash denim jacket. White leather sneakers keep it comfortable and brighten the darker colors. A narrow crossbody and sunglasses for clear afternoons, and a thin scarf for a cool morning. The jacket length decides whether this looks balanced: it should end at the waist or upper hip, because a longer denim jacket cuts the dress in an awkward place. Pack light tights in case the weather turns. It's the outfit I suggest to anyone who doesn't want to think in the morning.
9. Venice Autumn Wool Coat And Turtleneck Outfit

From mid-October into November, a knee-length wool coat is what keeps you warm on the water. Camel, charcoal or navy, straight or softly belted, over a fitted black or cream turtleneck and tailored ankle-length trousers. A belted coat suits most shapes; a straight one is better if you'll be layering a thick sweater, since a belt over bulk adds width. Flat leather ankle boots with supportive soles and warm socks. A structured crossbody and leather gloves. A large scarf is useful on boats, but choose a fine wool one that folds small. It's warm enough for an evening concert and smart enough for a nice lunch.
10. Venice Autumn Beige Monochrome Outfit

Tonal beige looks expensive and easy, but it needs a dry day. Cream jeans or tailored ecru trousers, an oatmeal sweater, and a camel trench or light wool coat on top. Taupe ankle boots match; a chocolate bag gives a little contrast. Gold jewelry and a neutral patterned scarf are all the detail it needs. The problem with pale trousers in Venice is splashes from damp paving, so choose an ankle-length cut and check the forecast first. If rain is coming, swap in dark trousers and keep everything else. Mixing textures, wool, cotton and leather, is what stops a tonal outfit looking flat.
11. Venice Autumn Striped Sweater And Jeans Outfit

Stripes and denim always look at home in an Italian city. A cream-and-navy or cream-and-black sweater with dark straight jeans that stop at the ankle, under a navy trench, black utility jacket or cropped wool coat. White or black leather sneakers. A red, burgundy or forest-green crossbody is the one hit of color. Small hoops and a light scarf if the air is cool. I'd pick a mid-weight knit; a very heavy sweater won't fit under a trench, and a very oversized one bunches at the hip. On a longer trip, repeat the outfit with a different bag and scarf and nobody will notice.
12. Venice Autumn Shirt Dress And Cardigan Outfit

A shirt dress gives you three outfits in one: on its own, belted, or layered. A long-sleeve midi in navy, olive, burgundy or a small geometric print, with a fine-knit cardigan in a coordinating neutral and a slim leather belt. Opaque tights and flat ankle boots. A structured crossbody. If rain is likely, a light trench goes over the cardigan and the boots should be water-resistant. Before buying, sit down in it and reach forward; a shirt dress that gapes between the buttons at the bust needs a size up or a hidden safety pin. Loosen the belt after dinner and it still looks deliberate.
13. Venice Autumn Puffer Vest And Trousers Outfit

A slim quilted vest is the layer I pack for cool mornings that warm up by noon. Over a light turtleneck or striped long-sleeve top, with tailored pull-on trousers or straight travel pants instead of leggings, which look too gym-ready on a city street. Cushioned leather sneakers and a water-resistant crossbody. Black, navy, olive or taupe so it goes with everything else. A packable rain shell can go over the top if the sky changes. Keep the vest slim; a puffy one won't fit under a coat and adds width at the middle. It suits travel days and casual island trips.
14. Venice Autumn Satin Skirt And Sweater Outfit

Satin and a chunky knit are a good contrast, smooth against textured, and it's one of my favorite ways to dress a skirt down. Chocolate, black, deep green or burgundy satin with a soft crew-neck sweater tucked loosely at the front. Opaque tights and flat ankle boots or loafers, not delicate heels. A tailored coat or trench depending on the weather, a compact leather shoulder bag and simple earrings. The fabric weight is the thing to check: thin satin clings to tights and shows every crease, while a heavier or lined one hangs straight and moves well when you walk. Good for coffee, galleries and a relaxed dinner.
15. Venice Autumn Travel Day Outfit

A travel day outfit has to handle the airport and the first few hours of exploring. Straight ponte pants or polished knit trousers, a breathable long-sleeve top, and a soft cardigan under a light trench so you can peel layers off on a warm train. Ponte is my choice for this because it holds its shape and doesn't crease after hours of sitting. Cushioned slip-on sneakers make security quicker. A zip crossbody for passport and phone, and a structured tote for a scarf, water bottle and snacks. Darker neutrals hide creases and go with the rest of the suitcase. Compression socks fit under longer trousers on a long flight.
Adapting the Midi Skirts and Wide Trousers to Your Height
Several of these outfits rely on midi lengths and wide legs, and both change a lot depending on your height and shape. Here's how I'd adjust them.
Petite frames
A midi that hits mid-calf on someone tall can land at the ankle on a petite frame, which is exactly where it catches on bridge steps. Look for petite lengths or have skirts shortened to just below the knee. Cropped jackets that end at the waist keep the leg looking longer than a hip-length one, and wide trousers work best with a high rise and a hem that just covers the top of the shoe.
Tall frames
Regular-length wide trousers often stop short on a tall frame and look accidental. Long or tall sizes fix it. Knee-length coats from standard ranges can hit above the knee, which is fine with trousers but looks unbalanced over a midi skirt, so check the coat with the skirt on.
Curvier frames
A wrap or belted coat shows the waist and sits better than a straight boxy one over a fuller bust. Knit dresses in a denser knit skim instead of clinging. With wide trousers, a fitted top tucked at the front keeps the proportions clear, and stretch waistbands are worth it on a long walking day.
Which Two of These Venice Looks Would You Pack First?
A Venice fall wardrobe works when every piece earns its place twice. Keep the palette tight so trousers, dresses, sweaters, coats and shoes all swap with each other. Pack one rain-ready outer layer, closed shoes you've already walked in, and a couple of scarves or bags that add color in very little space. Think about the month too: September still suits a light jacket, while late October and November call for warm knits and a proper coat. And dress like yourself. If a look on this list isn't you, change one piece and keep the idea.
