Looking put together in the fall rarely comes down to one expensive piece. It comes from tailoring that fits, a palette that hangs together, and layers you can take off at your desk without ruining the outfit. That's how I approach a client's autumn work wardrobe, and it's the thinking behind the twenty outfits below. You'll see a lot of sculpted tailoring, earthy neutrals, heritage checks, suede and a fair amount of burgundy, because those are what this season's collections lean on. Every outfit is a formula rather than a fixed recipe, so you can change the proportions, heel height or fabric weight and keep the polished effect.

Reading Your Office Dress Code Before Borrowing These Looks
Every outfit below can work at the office, but not every office. Before a client copies a look, I ask what the most senior people in the building wear on an ordinary Tuesday. That tells you more than any written policy.
- In a corporate or client-facing role, lean on the suits, the trench with tailored trousers, the pencil skirt and the navy coat with gray. Keep denim and leather for Fridays.
- In business casual, the blazer with dark jeans, the knit dress, the cardigan with pleats and the plaid blazer all sit right.
- In creative or casual workplaces, the leather jacket with a slip skirt, the utility jacket and the denim shirt with suede are fair game every day.
Two details push an outfit up a level faster than anything else: a structured bag and a closed-toe shoe with some shape to it. If you're unsure, swap in those two and the rest of the outfit can stay relaxed.
1. Autumn Trench Coat And Wide Leg Trousers Outfit

A trench is the first coat I check a client owns, because it covers the weeks between too warm for wool and too cold for a jacket. Layer it over a lightweight turtleneck and high-waisted wide-leg trousers; the slim top is what stops the trousers and the trench from turning into one big shape. Pointed ankle boots and a structured bag finish it. Length decides everything here. Petite women usually look better in a shorter trench with cropped trousers, and taller women can carry full length. When the coat is open, I tie the belt loosely behind the back, which pulls the waist in without breaking the long line down the front.
2. Autumn Blazer And Straight Leg Jeans Outfit

Blazer with straight-leg jeans is the outfit I'd wear on a day when I don't know who I'm meeting. A herringbone, plaid, camel or navy blazer over a white shirt or fine-knit sweater carries the polish, and dark-wash jeans with no distressing keep it smart. Loafers or low block-heel boots suit it best. The jean length should follow the shoe: full length over boots, a slight crop to show a loafer. Single-breasted blazers that follow the waist a little do more for your shape than boxy ones here, since the denim is already straight.
3. Autumn Sweater And Satin Midi Skirt Outfit

Knit against satin is a contrast I rely on when someone wants to look dressed without feeling dressed. Tuck a fitted or gently relaxed sweater partly into a bias-cut satin midi so the waist shows but the skirt still moves. Bias-cut satin clings where it touches, so a thick sweater fully tucked will show a ridge at the hip; a front tuck avoids that. Knee-high leather boots under the hem keep you warm, and pointed flats work on milder days. If the sweater is oversized, push the sleeves up to show your wrists. It's a small thing, but it keeps a big knit from swallowing a smaller frame.
4. Autumn Knit Dress And Knee High Boots Outfit

For days when you'd rather not think, a knit midi dress is one piece and done. I look for a defined waist, a wrap front or a ribbed texture, in a medium-weight knit. Too thin and it clings to every seam underneath; too thick and it adds bulk under a coat. Camel, navy, charcoal and chocolate stay neutral, and burgundy brings more color. With knee-high boots, let the hem overlap the boot shaft slightly so no leg shows when you sit. A long wool coat covers colder days, a belted trench the early weeks, and a narrow belt adds definition if the dress is straight.
5. Autumn Camel Coat And Cream Trousers Outfit

A camel coat over cream trousers is tonal dressing at its most expensive-looking, and it doesn't need perfect matches. Add a beige cashmere sweater or ivory blouse, and let the shades differ slightly; that difference gives depth where an exact match looks flat. Cognac loafers or chocolate ankle boots ground the pale palette. One practical warning about cream trousers: thin fabric shows pockets and underwear lines in daylight, so I always check them by a window and prefer lined pants or a heavier weave. Pick a straight or softly wide cut for your proportions.
6. Autumn Burgundy Midi Dress And Tailored Coat Outfit

Burgundy behaves almost like a neutral in fall, which is why a burgundy midi dress is easy to wear to work. I like a boat neckline or soft draping, under a black, charcoal, camel or chocolate tailored coat. Pointed pumps make it formal; sleek ankle boots make it everyday. Match the bag's color family to the shoes. Gold warms the burgundy, while silver suits cooler berry shades. The coat shape should answer the skirt: a full skirt wants a streamlined coat, and a straight dress can take a belted one for some shape.
7. Autumn Plaid Blazer And Tailored Trousers Outfit

Plaid blazers look current when everything else is plain. Choose one in brown, gray, navy or olive and pull one quiet color out of the check for your trousers; that one repeated shade is what makes it look planned. A fine-gauge turtleneck keeps the neckline clean. Loafers or pointed ankle boots suit straight or slightly wide pants, and low slingbacks work on warmer days. I'd avoid a second pattern anywhere. If the matched version feels too formal for your office, solid trousers in a darker shade soften it.
8. Autumn Leather Jacket And Slip Skirt Outfit

Leather looks elegant when the jacket is streamlined and the rest of the outfit is soft. A fitted or slightly boxy jacket in black, espresso or burgundy works with a satin slip skirt that lands mid-calf. Add a fine-knit crewneck under the leather for warmth and to stop the jacket from rubbing the skin. Pointed ankle boots or ballet flats keep it refined; a small shoulder bag keeps the proportions neat. If a biker jacket feels too tough for work, a collarless or blazer-shaped leather jacket gives the same texture with less attitude. Keep the hardware minimal.
9. Autumn Skirt Suit And Loafers Outfit

A skirt suit takes the decision-making out of a workday, and it splits into separates later. Choose a tailored jacket with a matching knee-length or midi skirt in tweed, wool or a quiet check. A lightweight turtleneck or silk blouse underneath avoids bulk at the shoulders. Loafers make it daytime; low pointed pumps make it formal. Once temperatures drop, sheer or opaque tights add warmth and coverage. If the jacket has strong shoulders, carry a smaller bag so the whole outfit doesn't look boxy. Wearing it open gives a relaxed vertical line when the meeting isn't formal.
10. Autumn White Shirt And Wide Leg Pants Outfit

Fit through the shoulders and bust is the first thing I check on a white shirt, because a shirt that pulls across the buttons looks cheap regardless of price. Tuck a well-fitting one into high-waisted wide-leg pants in espresso, olive or navy, and add a leather belt, pointed loafers and a structured tote. Roll the sleeves neatly, or let the cuffs show beneath a sleeveless knit vest. On colder days, a long wool coat goes over all of it. Bright white can look harsh on warmer or softer complexions; ivory or soft cream keeps the crisp effect with less glare.
11. Autumn Suede Jacket And Dark Jeans Outfit

Suede gives warmth and softness without bulk, which makes it one of my favorite in-between jackets. Choose a cropped or hip-length suede jacket in tobacco, chocolate or olive, with dark indigo straight-leg jeans and a cream knit. Boots close to the jacket's shade tie it together, and a smooth leather bag adds contrast. Keep the denim clean, with no heavy fading. Suede marks and darkens in rain, so if you live somewhere wet, treat it with a protector spray before the first wear or choose a good suede-effect jacket instead. One rustic accessory is enough.
12. Autumn Cardigan And Pleated Midi Skirt Outfit

A fitted cardigan buttoned up and worn as a top, with a narrow-pleated midi skirt, is pretty without being fussy. Navy, chocolate, forest green or muted bronze pleats all work. Knee-high boots keep you warm without interrupting the skirt's line; loafers and tights give a preppier result. The knit weight matters more than it looks. Bulky cardigans fight the volume of the pleats, while fine merino or a cotton blend lies flat and lets the skirt move. A narrow belt is optional if the cardigan already fits close.
13. Autumn Cape And Slim Trousers Outfit

Capes are lovely in mild weather and tricky in practice, so I style them with care. All the volume sits on top, which means the bottom has to be slim: straight trousers or cigarette pants with a fitted turtleneck in a matching neutral. Pointed ankle boots or polished loafers suit it. A large tote fights the cape's shape and slips off the shoulder, so carry a top-handle bag instead. Long gloves cover the arms that a cape leaves exposed on cooler days. Petite women usually look best in a cape ending at the hip or upper thigh.
14. Autumn Turtleneck And Pencil Skirt Outfit

Few combinations stay as consistently polished as a fine-knit turtleneck and a tailored pencil skirt. The knit has to sit smoothly under the waistband, so I choose fine gauge and skip anything chunky. Pair black, ivory, camel or burgundy knitwear with a wool, tweed or ponte midi skirt, and make sure it has a back or side slit for walking and stairs. Knee-high boots or pointed pumps finish it, with a long tailored coat on top. If you'd rather not emphasize the midsection, leave a slightly longer sweater untucked and switch to a straighter skirt.
15. Autumn Tweed Dress And Pointed Flats Outfit

Tweed brings texture by itself, so I keep the dress shape simple: a shift, A-line or softly tailored midi, without extra trims. Neutral checks, black-and-cream weaves and muted browns get the most wear. Under a sleeveless dress, a fine turtleneck or silk blouse adds coverage. Pointed flats are comfortable for long days, and block-heel pumps or sleek knee-high boots dress it up. Heavily textured tweed needs everything else smooth. A fitted coat often drags on thick tweed and bunches the dress underneath, so a slightly roomy wool coat is the better pick.
16. Autumn Utility Jacket And Pleated Skirt Outfit

A utility jacket turns polished when the rest of the outfit is fluid rather than rugged. Choose a structured olive, khaki or dark brown jacket with few pockets and clean hardware, over a fitted knit and a pleated midi in cream, black or burgundy. If it has a drawstring, cinch it lightly so the waist reads under the jacket. Leather knee-high boots make the practical jacket look intentional, and a polished shoulder bag keeps it from going camping. I like this for transitional weeks because the jacket comes off easily and the knit and skirt stand on their own.
17. Autumn Velvet Blazer And Black Trousers Outfit

Velvet is the most unforgiving fabric in this list for fit, because it catches light on every pull and crease. That's why I'd only buy a velvet blazer that fits at the shoulders and buttons without strain. In black, midnight blue, forest green or burgundy, layer it over a silk-look blouse or fitted turtleneck with black straight-leg trousers for one long line. Matte trousers and minimal jewelry let the velvet lead. For daytime, wear it open with loafers; for evening, button it at the waist and add pointed pumps.
18. Autumn Navy Coat And Gray Knit Outfit

Navy and gray is a softer route than all-black, and it looks expensive because the shades sit close together. Layer a tailored navy coat over a heather-gray sweater and charcoal straight-leg trousers, with black or dark brown loafers. A burgundy bag adds a controlled bit of color; a navy one keeps it monochrome. The sweater needs a clean neckline and moderate weight so the coat closes without strain. When the outfit feels too quiet, a silk scarf with navy, cream and burgundy brings it to life. Silver jewelry suits the cool palette.
19. Autumn Denim Shirt And Suede Midi Skirt Outfit

Denim earns a place at work when it's dark, smooth and paired with something richer. Tuck a medium- or dark-wash denim shirt into a suede or suede-effect midi skirt in camel, chocolate or olive, and add a leather belt to separate the blue from the earthy lower half. An A-line or softly straight skirt lets you walk easily. Knee-high boots finish it for fall, and loafers work in the early weeks. Roll the sleeves evenly and open only one or two buttons. Skip distressed denim, western details and fringe; this outfit stays polished only when the finishes are clean.
20. Autumn Chocolate Brown Suit And Silk Blouse Outfit

Chocolate brown tailoring is softer than black, and in my experience it flatters more people. A single-breasted blazer with matching straight or wide-leg trousers is the base. Under it, an ivory silk blouse or a muted blue shirt brightens the deep brown near the face. Espresso pumps, loafers or ankle boots keep the base cohesive, and a tan or burgundy bag adds contrast. Wear the blazer open with a relaxed blouse if a matched suit feels too formal. The jacket and trousers also split later, with jeans and with knitwear. Sleeve and trouser length are what make a suit look costly, so get both checked.
A Trouser Hem That Works With Loafers and Boots
Half of these outfits pair wide or straight trousers with loafers on one day and ankle boots on the next, and the hem is usually the first thing to look wrong. Trousers hemmed for a heel drag on the floor in flats, while trousers hemmed for flats look short once a boot adds height.
I take every pair of trousers to the tailor with the shoes I'll wear most. For wide legs, the hem should just clear the floor in those shoes. For straight legs worn with both loafers and ankle boots, I aim for a hem that skims the top of the foot in a loafer; with a boot, it then sits on the shaft with a slight break. Cropped trousers are the exception. They should land clearly above the ankle bone, not halfway, so the crop looks intentional.
Caring for Suede, Velvet and Satin Between Wears
These fabrics give the outfits above their texture, and they're the ones that wear out first if you treat them like cotton.
- Suede: brush it with a suede brush after each wear to lift the nap, and let rain marks dry naturally away from a radiator before brushing.
- Velvet: hang it rather than folding, and steam it from the inside instead of ironing, which crushes the pile into shiny patches.
- Satin: hang it on a padded hanger and keep it away from rough bags and zippers, since a single snag pulls a visible thread across the surface.
- Wool coats and tailoring: rest them a day between wears so creases drop out, and brush off lint rather than washing.
Fewer Pieces, Better Fitted, All Season
A polished autumn wardrobe doesn't need a shopping spree. It needs dependable layers, tailoring that fits, and a palette of neutrals with a few deep seasonal shades. After that, texture does the rest: suede, satin, tweed, leather, velvet and fine knits. Watch the proportions too. A roomy coat wants a streamlined bottom, a fitted top suits a flowing skirt, and a strong texture needs plainer accessories. Use these outfits as starting points and build them from what you already like wearing. An outfit you're comfortable in will always look better than a trend you keep adjusting.
