Late summer into early fall is the stretch where I get the most panicked messages about what to wear. Mornings need a layer, afternoons are still hot, and the shops are already full of wool. My answer is nearly always the same: don't pack the summer clothes away yet. Keep the breathable pieces you already love and change what goes around them, mostly the shoes, the outer layer and the color of one item. The twenty outfits below do exactly that, using cardigans, light jackets, closed-toe shoes and deeper shades to shift familiar warm-weather pieces into the new season. I've added notes on fit and fabric for each, so you can adjust them to your body, your workplace and your weekends.

Sorting the Summer Rail Into Keep, Layer and Store
Before buying anything for the new season, I go through a client's summer clothes and split them three ways. It takes twenty minutes and saves a lot of money.
- Keep in rotation: pieces in deeper or neutral colors, and fabrics with some body, such as denim, poplin, linen in darker shades, cotton knits and midweight jersey. These carry straight into fall.
- Keep for layering: thin-strapped tanks, slip dresses and sleeveless tops. On their own they're summer; under a cardigan or blazer they're transitional.
- Store until spring: very sheer fabrics, bright neons and pastel brights, terry and anything obviously made for the beach. They tend to look out of place once the light changes.
What you're left with is usually a wardrobe that needs two or three additions, not a whole season's worth. In most closets that's a light knit, a jacket with some structure and a pair of closed shoes.
1. White Tank Top, Wide-Leg Jeans, And Cardigan Outfit

I use this as the template for nearly every transitional outfit: a fitted base, a relaxed bottom, and a knit you can take off. A white tank with mid- or high-rise wide-leg jeans in a medium wash, then a light cardigan in camel or burgundy worn open through the warm hours and buttoned when the air cools. A fine-gauge cotton or merino cardigan is the right weight here; chunky knits are too warm by noon and too bulky to carry. Leather loafers bring in fall without the heat of boots. Petite women often do better with a cropped jean that shows the shoe, and taller women can take the full length. Swap the tank for a short-sleeve rib tee if you want more coverage.
2. Slip Dress, Oversized Blazer, And Loafers Outfit

A slip dress on its own reads as summer evening. Put an oversized blazer over it and it becomes a daytime outfit for September. I like a midi slip in chocolate, black or a muted print, under a charcoal or tan blazer, with loafers so you can actually walk. The cooler-morning fix is a fitted crewneck tee under the dress, which looks deliberate and adds a surprising amount of warmth. Avoid a thick sweater over satin; it drags the fabric and shows every crease. A longer blazer covers the hips, a belted one shows the waist. Bias-cut slips cling a little, so a smoothing slip or shorts underneath help.
3. Linen Shirt, Tailored Trousers, And Leather Sandals Outfit

Linen is one of the first fabrics I'd keep out when the calendar turns but the heat doesn't. A relaxed linen button-down in white, pale blue or cream with tailored trousers in olive or cocoa gives you the breathability of summer and the shape of fall. Linen creases within the hour, and that's normal; the half-tuck hides most of it at the waist. Flat leather sandals still work on hot afternoons, and a light knit over the shoulders covers you for the evening. A woven leather tote crosses the seasons better than straw. Keeping the shirt and trousers in similar tones makes the whole figure look longer.
4. T-Shirt, Midi Skirt, And Denim Jacket Outfit

Cool morning, sunny afternoon: a soft tee, a midi skirt and a denim jacket handle both. The jacket goes on at eight and comes off at lunch. Choose the tee in a neutral and the skirt in a deeper shade, solid or with a small print. The way you tuck changes the outfit more than people expect; a full tuck into a pleated skirt gives you a clear waist, while a front tuck reads more relaxed and suits a fuller midsection. Mid-wash denim jackets go with almost every skirt color. Sneakers, ballet flats or low loafers all work, so pick by how much walking the day involves. It's an outfit that suits almost any age.
5. Knitted Polo, Bermuda Shorts, And Loafers Outfit

Bermuda shorts don't need to go in storage the moment September arrives. Tailored knee-length shorts with a knitted polo in navy or forest green bring the knit texture of fall while your legs stay cool. The fit of the shorts decides whether this looks sharp: pleated fronts give more room through the hip and thigh, flat fronts look cleaner on straighter figures. They should end at or just above the knee; shorter and it turns into a beach outfit. Polished loafers and a proper belt keep it intentional. When it cools down, a light trench or blazer over the polo carries it into a casual office.
6. Summer Dress, Trench Coat, And Ankle Boots Outfit

Your favorite summer dress is probably the easiest piece to carry into fall. The change happens at the feet and over the shoulders: swap sandals for slim ankle boots, then add a light trench you can take off when it warms up. Cotton or linen midi dresses in a solid, a fine stripe or a small floral all work. Check where the boot top meets the hem; a midi that ends just above the boot shaft can cut the leg awkwardly, so a small gap of skin or a slightly longer hem looks better. Petite women usually suit a shorter trench. A tan or dark brown crossbody connects the coat and the boots.
7. Tailored Vest, Matching Trousers, And Sandals Outfit

A matching vest and trouser set is my answer for anyone who wants to look polished on a warm day without a jacket. The vest worn on its own as a top keeps your arms cool, and the matching trousers make it read as tailoring instead of casual. Taupe, navy or chocolate all look good on this. Check the armholes before buying: on cheaper vests they cut low and show your bra at the side, which a fitted tank underneath fixes. A longer vest covers more of the torso, while a cropped one shows off a high waist. Leather sandals now, loafers and a blazer over the set when it cools. It's a good outfit for conferences and smart daytime events.
8. Striped Shirt, Straight-Leg Jeans, And Ballet Flats Outfit

A striped button-down with straight-leg jeans is one of those outfits I never get tired of recommending. Blue-and-white, brown-and-cream or burgundy stripes all work. Roll the sleeves past the elbow in the heat, then unroll them when the air turns. Cotton poplin shirts hold a crisp shape, while softer oxford cloth looks more relaxed when left open over a fitted tank. Dark denim reads more autumnal; a lighter wash keeps it summery. Ballet flats finish it without the weight of boots, and a slim leather belt pulls in fall texture. It's the outfit I suggest for travel days because it looks fine even after hours of sitting.
9. Satin Midi Skirt, T-Shirt, And Leather Jacket Outfit

Satin and leather together are a reliable contrast: the skirt moves and catches light, the jacket holds a firm line. A bronze, burgundy or black satin midi with a tucked cotton tee, then a cropped leather or faux-leather jacket that stops at the waist so the skirt's shape stays visible. Satin is honest about what's underneath it, so if it tends to cling, look for a bias cut with a lining, or wear smoothing shorts. It also marks with water, so I'd keep this one for dry days. Low sneakers make it casual, pointed flats sharpen it for a dinner.
10. Utility Jumpsuit, Lightweight Jacket, And Sneakers Outfit

A utility jumpsuit is the fastest outfit on this list to get into, and that's its whole appeal. Pick a breathable cotton or linen blend in khaki, rust or washed black, roll the sleeves and ankles while it's warm, and add a cropped jacket when the temperature dips. The fit through the body is what to check in the fitting room: sit down and bend over, because jumpsuits that are short in the torso pull uncomfortably at the crotch and shoulders. Longer torsos usually need a relaxed cut. Use the matching tie or swap it for a leather belt. Retro sneakers and a crossbody keep your hands free for travel.
11. Tank Top, Maxi Skirt, And Cropped Cardigan Outfit

A fitted tank and a maxi skirt is about as airy as an outfit gets, which is why it lasts so well into warm September days. The cropped cardigan is the part that makes it work for fall, and its length matters: one that meets the skirt waistband keeps your proportions neat, while a longer cardigan breaks the line at the widest part of the hip. If you'd rather not draw attention to the waist, a relaxed one ending at the upper hip is kinder. I like a rust skirt with a cream cardigan, or navy with soft gray. Flat mules or streamlined sneakers keep the long hem from catching.
12. Denim Dress, Knee-High Boots, And Shoulder Bag Outfit

A denim dress already has the weight of fall, so all it needs is the right footwear. Knee-high leather boots in dark brown or tan make it seasonal without piling on layers. The boot and hem have to be in conversation: a knee-length dress should overlap the boot top or leave a small gap, never stop exactly where the boot does. Lightweight chambray-weight denim moves and breathes better than stiff denim on warm days. A belted style defines the waist, a straight shirt-dress cut gives room through the middle. On a chilly start, a thin turtleneck underneath turns it into a three-season dress.
13. Printed Blouse, Wide-Leg Culottes, And Loafers Outfit

Culottes and a printed blouse are a smart pairing for days that start at the office and end at lunch. The print stays modest in scale (an abstract, a stripe or a small floral) and the culottes pick up one color from it, which is the simplest way to make two pieces look like a set. Culottes are unforgiving about length: they should end above the ankle bone so the loafers show, or they look like trousers that shrank. A full tuck with a slim belt gives the most shape, and a front tuck is easier if you sit all day. Add a compact satchel and it's done.
14. Denim Shorts, Oversized Sweater, And Ankle Boots Outfit

Denim shorts and an oversized sweater make sense for those mornings that are cool but warm up fast. Choose high-rise, mid-thigh shorts and a cotton or light wool sweater in oatmeal or olive. The one rule is that the shorts must show below the sweater hem; if they disappear, it looks like you forgot your trousers. A small front tuck stops the sweater swallowing a petite frame. Longer tailored shorts are a better choice than distressed cutoffs if you want more coverage. Suede or leather ankle boots pull it into fall. I'd keep this for markets, campus and vacation days rather than anywhere smarter.
15. Knit Midi Dress, Denim Jacket, And Sneakers Outfit

A light knit dress is the nicest middle ground between a summer dress and a winter one, as long as you choose the right yarn. Cotton knit breathes on warm afternoons; thick acrylic traps heat and pills quickly where a bag strap rubs. Sleeveless or short-sleeve midi styles in charcoal or camel are the most useful. A cropped denim jacket is easy to shed and carry. Ribbed knits cling more than flat ones, so a straight ribbed shape suits people who are comfortable with a fitted line, and a narrow belt helps if the dress is looser. White sneakers make it practical for days spent on your feet.
16. Cargo Pants, Fitted Tank, And Bomber Jacket Outfit

Cargo pants, a ribbed tank and a light bomber are what I suggest for days that are mostly spent moving: flights, road trips, outdoor plans. Olive or tan cargos with a white or black tank, and the bomber goes on for cool evenings and over-air-conditioned buildings. A straight or gently tapered leg looks cleaner than a balloon cargo, and if the pants carry several big pockets, keep everything else plain. Notice where the side pockets sit; if they land on the widest part of the thigh, they'll add bulk there. Retro sneakers or leather trainers keep it sporty without looking sloppy.
17. Floral Midi Dress, Cardigan, And Mules Outfit

A floral dress on a dark ground is summer's easiest gift to autumn. Navy, black, burgundy or forest green backgrounds already look seasonal; you only need to change what goes with them. I pull a fine-knit cardigan in one of the print's quieter colors, which ties the two together without looking matched. Closed-toe mules feel autumnal and stay cooler than boots. Worn open, the cardigan keeps a long vertical line down the front of the dress; buttoned, it becomes a top layer. A cropped cardigan shows the waist, a longer one covers the hip. It's an outfit I'd wear to family gatherings as easily as the office.
18. Beige Shirt, Cream Trousers, And Brown Loafers Outfit

Tonal neutrals look composed, but only if you vary the textures. A beige or sand shirt with cream or stone trousers can look washed out when both are the same flat cotton. Mixing linen, smooth leather and a soft knit gives the eye something to separate. The dark brown loafers, belt and bag are what anchor this outfit; without that depth it reads unfinished. A loose tuck gives an easy shape. If you want color, put burgundy into the bag or jewelry. One practical warning: cream trousers show everything, so I'd skip these on a day of public transport or toddlers.
19. Black Midi Dress, Suede Jacket, And Flats Outfit

The black midi dress is already in most closets, and a suede jacket is what moves it into fall. Choose the dress in breathable cotton, jersey or light knit, then a cropped jacket in tan, camel or chocolate. Suede is soft and warm but marks easily and darkens in rain, so treat it with a protector spray before the season and keep it at home on wet days. A jacket that ends near the natural waist works best with fuller skirts, while a straight dress takes a slightly longer cut. Pointed flats or ballet flats keep it refined. Change the jewelry and bag, and it goes from the office to dinner.
20. Leggings, Oversized Shirt, Knit Sweater, And Sneakers Outfit

Some days just call for leggings, and that's fine if the rest of the outfit is put together. Thick black leggings with an oversized white or pale blue shirt that covers the hips, plus a light sweater knotted over the shoulders or pulled on when it cools. The leggings are the piece to be fussy about: matte, substantial fabric looks like clothing, thin shiny athletic fabric looks like the gym and goes see-through when you bend. Retro sneakers and a structured tote balance the soft pieces. A cap makes it sporty. I'd wear this for travel, school drop-off and long walks on an unsettled day.
Dressing for a Cold Office and a Hot Walk Home
The hardest version of between-season dressing is often indoors. Offices, trains and shops tend to keep the air conditioning running long after the weather turns, so you can be cold at your desk and too warm outside on the same day.
My rule is that the outfit underneath has to suit the warmest part of the day, and the layer on top has to suit the coldest. That's why so many looks above use a tank, a slip dress or a short-sleeve knit as the base. Keep a cardigan, blazer or lightweight trench at work if you can, so you're not carrying it in the heat.
Fabrics that handle both temperatures
- Merino and fine cotton knits regulate heat better than acrylic, which feels warm at first and then clammy.
- Linen and cotton poplin breathe outdoors and still look crisp under a blazer.
- Polyester satin looks lovely but traps heat on a warm walk, so it's better for evenings.
Shoes count here too. Closed loafers and flats are comfortable in both settings; ankle boots are best kept for days that never get properly warm.
Change the Shoes First, Then the Jacket
If you remember one thing from this list, make it this: the summer pieces stay, and what you change around them is small. Swap sandals for loafers, flats or ankle boots, add a cardigan, denim jacket, blazer or light trench, and bring in one deeper color. Tanks, linen shirts, slip dresses and shorts all keep working for weeks longer that way. Start with what's already hanging in your closet, check the forecast in the morning, and dress for the coolest part of the day with a layer you're happy to carry for the warmest.
