Italy in autumn is one of my favorite trips to pack for, partly because the clothes can be a little dressier than on a summer trip and still work for long days on foot. The tricky part is range. A September afternoon in Rome can feel like summer, while a November morning in Milan or Turin calls for a proper coat and gloves. So I plan around layers that come off: tailored coats, soft knits, relaxed trousers, midi dresses, shoes you can walk in for hours, and a few accessories that make simple pieces look finished. The outfits below cover sightseeing, café stops, museums, day trips to the countryside and relaxed dinners. I've noted where each one fits best and how to adjust it for your body, your taste and the city you're heading to.

North and South Can Feel Like Different Seasons
Italy is long, and autumn arrives at very different speeds along it. Before I plan outfits for a client, I look at which cities are on the route, because one packing list rarely suits all of them.
- Northern cities such as Milan, Turin and the lakes cool down earliest. By November, mornings can be foggy and near freezing, so a wool coat, gloves and closed boots belong in the bag.
- Central Italy, including Rome and Florence, usually stays mild into October, with warm afternoons and cool evenings. Layers matter more than heavy coats there.
- The south and the islands can feel like late summer well into October. A denim jacket or light knit is often enough, and you may want sandals in September.
- Autumn is also one of the wetter times of year in much of the country, so a water-resistant layer earns its place on any route.
If your trip runs from north to south or the other way, pack for the coldest stop and wear fewer layers as you go. It's far easier to leave a coat in your suitcase than to buy one on the road.
1. Trench Coat And Straight-Leg Jeans Italy Autumn Outfit

If I could pack only one coat for an autumn city break, it would be a trench. A camel, stone or olive one over a light crewneck or fitted long-sleeve top looks neat in photos and handles a passing shower. Straight-leg jeans stay comfortable over a long walking day. The shoes are the real decision: cobblestones punish thin soles, so pick leather sneakers or low ankle boots with cushioning and some grip. A structured crossbody with a zip keeps your things secure and your hands free. Add gold earrings and sunglasses. On warm afternoons, carry the coat over your arm; when it cools, tie on a thin scarf. Rome, Florence, Bologna and Milan all suit it.
2. Knit Blazer And Wide-Leg Trousers Italy Autumn Outfit

A knit blazer gives you the shape of tailoring with the comfort of a cardigan, which is exactly what you want on a train in the morning and at a museum all afternoon. Wear it over a fine-knit top in cream, black, burgundy or chocolate, with high-waisted wide-leg trousers that move easily. If rain is likely, I'd go slightly cropped on the trouser so the hem stays off wet pavement. Leather loafers look refined; sleek sneakers are smarter for a heavy walking day. A medium shoulder bag and slim belt finish it. Knit blazers also come out of a suitcase without creases, unlike a woven blazer, which is a big part of why I pack them. It carries you from a gallery to a café to dinner.
3. Leather Jacket And Black Trousers Italy Autumn Outfit

A leather jacket is a good city layer for crisp autumn air, especially in the north. Wear a black or dark brown jacket over a fine merino sweater, fitted knit tee or soft mock-neck, with tailored black trousers in a straight or slightly tapered cut so they work with several pairs of shoes. Supportive leather sneakers during the day and low-heeled ankle boots at night keep it practical. A compact crossbody, simple watch and small earrings are all it needs. For a softer look, a collarless leather jacket is less biker and more city. Leather blocks wind well but needs care in steady rain, so I'd pair it with an umbrella on wet days. Milan, Turin or an evening walk in central Rome suit it.
4. Midi Dress And Ankle Boots Italy Autumn Outfit

A long-sleeve midi dress is one item that gives you a whole outfit, which makes it a packing favorite of mine. Choose navy, deep green, rust, burgundy or a quiet autumn print with a softly defined waist and an A-line or flowing skirt you can walk and sit in. Low block-heel ankle boots with grippy soles keep you steady on stone streets. Add a cropped cardigan or tailored wool jacket for cool mornings and a leather crossbody for practicality. Small hoops or a pendant finish it. Pack lightweight tights if you're traveling into late autumn. I check one thing before packing a dress: that its fabric doesn't wrinkle when crushed in your hand, because jersey and crepe travel far better than linen or cotton poplin. It suits galleries, a nice lunch, the theater or any evening you want to dress up.
5. Striped Sweater And Cropped Pants Italy Autumn Outfit

Stripes look at home in Italy, especially by the sea. A cream and navy, black and white, or camel and ivory knit with a neat, comfortable fit goes with ankle-length cigarette pants or cropped straight trousers in black, navy or taupe. The shorter hem looks sharp and stays dry on damp streets. Classic loafers suit mild days; slim sneakers are better for long walks. A light trench works over it without hiding the stripes. Finish with a structured tote, small studs and a silk scarf knotted on the bag handle. I keep stripes fairly narrow for travel photos, since wide bold stripes can dominate the frame. It's easy for coastal towns, cafés and markets.
6. Cardigan And Satin Skirt Italy Autumn Outfit

A soft cardigan with a fluid satin skirt is relaxed and still elegant enough for dinner. Choose a midi skirt in chocolate, olive, champagne, navy or burgundy, tuck in a fitted tee or thin knit, and add a cardigan that ends at the waist or upper hip. Buttoning only the lower few buttons marks your shape without a belt. Ankle boots, ballet flats or leather sneakers depend on the weather and how far you're walking. A small shoulder bag and fine jewelry keep it polished. If shiny satin feels too evening for daytime, a matte satin or crepe with plain sneakers tones it down. I roll satin skirts around tissue paper to pack them, which keeps the worst creases out. Add sheer tights and a wool coat when it turns cold.
7. Denim Jacket And Knit Dress Italy Autumn Outfit

Early autumn in the south can still be warm in the afternoon, and that's when I'd skip the wool coat for a denim jacket. A medium or dark wash over a ribbed knit midi dress in black, camel, gray or forest green is comfortable from morning to night. The dress should skim the body; a tight knit gets uncomfortable over a long day and shows every seam. White or neutral leather sneakers keep it practical, while flat ankle boots dress it up a bit. A crossbody with a secure closure and a light scarf for your shoulders after sunset are worth packing. Roll the jacket sleeves. It works best in southern cities and in September, when evenings are cool but not cold.
8. Wool Coat And Dark Jeans Italy Autumn Outfit

By late autumn, especially in the north, the coat is the outfit. A knee-length wool coat in camel, charcoal, navy or black goes with almost anything you've packed. Underneath, a fine-gauge turtleneck or crewneck and dark straight-leg jeans; heavy chunky knits make a tailored coat pull across the back. Polished leather ankle boots keep your feet warm and look more appropriate in a city than hiking shoes. Add a soft scarf, structured crossbody and leather gloves if you're in northern Italy in November, when foggy, cold mornings are common. Petite travelers often look best in a coat that ends just above the knee; tall travelers can go longer. It suits city walks, train travel, shopping and slow dinners.
9. Sweater Vest And Button-Down Shirt Italy Autumn Outfit

A sweater vest over a shirt is one of the most adaptable layers I pack, because the vest keeps your core warm while the sleeves stay light. Start with a white, pale blue or striped cotton shirt, add a V-neck vest in camel, charcoal, navy or deep red, and let the collar and cuffs show. Relaxed tailored trousers or straight jeans both work. Loafers with cushioned insoles suit the preppy shape; leather sneakers are kinder on a full sightseeing day. Add a shoulder bag and a light trench when rain is likely. Leave the shirt out for a relaxed look or half-tuck it to show the waist. Cotton shirts wrinkle in a suitcase, so I hang them in the bathroom during a hot shower on arrival. It suits university towns and museum-heavy days.
10. Suede Jacket And Cream Jeans Italy Autumn Outfit

Suede in warm earth tones looks right in the Italian countryside. Pick a cropped or hip-length suede jacket in tan, cognac, chocolate or olive, layered over a fitted cream knit or white long-sleeve tee. Cream straight-leg jeans brighten it and make a softer alternative to blue denim. Hem them just above the ground, because light denim shows every splash. Brown ankle boots, a matching belt and a structured leather bag finish it, with gold jewelry. Suede and rain don't get along: it darkens and can stiffen if it gets soaked, so treat it with a protector before the trip and carry a compact water-resistant layer. I'd plan it for Tuscany, Umbria or day trips out of the cities.
11. Monochrome Black Italy Autumn Outfit

All black is the easiest outfit to pack and the hardest to get wrong. A black mock-neck with tailored ankle pants or wide-leg trousers, then a long black coat or a short structured jacket, gives you clean lines from shoulder to shoe. Leather loafers, pointed ankle boots or plain black sneakers keep it uncluttered. The thing I add every time is texture, because flat black on black looks heavy in photos. A ribbed knit, pebbled leather bag or wool scarf solves it. Gold or silver earrings put a little light near the face. If solid black feels severe, a charcoal coat or gray scarf softens it. Change just the shoes and earrings, and it goes from sightseeing to a concert or dinner.
12. Pleated Midi Skirt And Turtleneck Italy Autumn Outfit

A pleated midi skirt keeps its shape all day and swings nicely as you walk. Pick rust, forest green, navy, chocolate or a muted print, and wear it with a slim turtleneck tucked in to show the waist. A narrow leather belt adds definition. Knee-high boots make a smooth line under the hem and keep your legs warm; ankle boots and tights give a lighter version. Top it with a fitted blazer or knee-length wool coat. A structured bag and small hoops finish it. Pleats are worth checking before you pack: knife pleats in polyester hold their shape through a suitcase, while pressed pleats in natural fibers often need steaming. It's right for museums, a nice lunch or a relaxed evening.
13. Utility Jacket And Relaxed Jeans Italy Autumn Outfit

On active days I want pockets, and a light utility jacket has plenty. Choose olive, khaki, navy or muted brown and wear it over a striped tee or thin sweater with relaxed straight jeans. Supportive neutral sneakers with real traction matter here, because hill towns mean steep lanes, long stairways and worn stone that gets slick. A water-resistant crossbody carries your phone, wallet and compact umbrella. Add sunglasses and a scarf you can remove in the afternoon heat. Cinch the jacket's drawstring for a bit of shape. I'd wear it for day trips, coastal towns and anywhere comfort comes first.
14. Blazer And Straight-Leg Jeans Italy Autumn Outfit

A tailored blazer with straight-leg jeans goes almost everywhere. Choose black, camel, navy, herringbone or a quiet plaid, worn over a white tee when it's warm or a fitted cashmere sweater when it isn't. Medium or dark jeans keep it casual but neat. Loafers, slim sneakers or low block-heel boots depend on the day's walking. A structured crossbody and simple belt tie it together. If you have a fuller bust or broad shoulders, I'd go single-breasted with soft construction; double-breasted fronts add width. For more waist, choose a slightly fitted cut. Pack the blazer folded inside out, shoulders tucked into each other, and it arrives nearly crease-free. It suits shopping, galleries and café stops.
15. Puffer Vest And Knit Pants Italy Autumn Outfit

Travel days call for clothes that are comfortable but don't look like pajamas. Start with a fine-knit sweater and matching straight or wide-leg knit pants, then add a light quilted puffer vest for warmth with free arms. Keep it tonal: cream and camel, gray and black, or navy and soft blue. Supportive sneakers make stations, airports and transfers much easier. A large zip-top tote holds documents and essentials, and a small crossbody worn under the vest is harder for pickpockets to reach in crowded stations. Small earrings and a light scarf finish it. I'd wear it for train journeys, early departures and cool mornings out.
16. Belted Shirt Dress Italy Autumn Outfit

A belted shirt dress handles autumn's swings well because you can adjust it so easily. Choose a midi length in navy, olive, chocolate, burgundy or a small geometric print. Unbutton the top for a warm afternoon or close it to the collar when it cools; the belt defines the waist. Knee-high boots make it look polished in town, leather sneakers make it casual. A fitted turtleneck goes underneath on colder days. Add a cropped jacket or tailored trench, a medium crossbody and plain jewelry. Fabric belts that come with shirt dresses often look flimsy, so I swap them for a slim leather belt. It goes from sightseeing to lunch to an evening out.
17. Bouclé Jacket And Dark Trousers Italy Autumn Outfit

A bouclé jacket makes plain separates look dressed up with almost no effort. Choose a short jacket in cream, black, navy or a subtle check, over a plain knit top and dark straight trousers that are easy to rewear. If the jacket has decorative buttons, keep jewelry to a minimum so the two don't compete. Ballet flats or loafers suit mild days, low ankle boots later in the season, with a small top-handle bag or crossbody in a matching neutral. It's smart enough for a nice restaurant and comfortable for the day. Bouclé's loops snag on bag hardware and velcro, so I keep it away from anything rough, and a softly constructed one has less bulk in the shoulders.
18. Oversized Sweater And Midi Skirt Italy Autumn Outfit

An oversized sweater looks polished as long as the skirt below it is slim. Choose a soft knit in oatmeal, charcoal, burgundy, navy or moss green over a straight satin, knit or light wool skirt that falls below the knee. A small front tuck shows the waist, or slip a slim belt under the sweater. Knee-high boots keep your legs warm without breaking the long line. A shoulder bag and sculptural earrings finish it. If the sweater is especially roomy, keep the skirt plain and skip big accessories. I check the sweater's hem against the skirt: if it covers the waistband completely and stops at the hip, the outfit loses all shape. It's a good one for long lunches, slow days and cool evenings.
19. Waterproof Jacket And Tailored Pants Italy Autumn Outfit

A rainy day doesn't have to look like a hike. Choose a clean water-resistant jacket in black, navy, olive or beige, ideally with a defined waist and little hardware, over a breathable knit and cropped tailored pants. Waterproof leather sneakers or low rain-resistant ankle boots handle wet cobblestones, which get slippery quickly. A crossbody in coated fabric or treated leather keeps things dry. A compact umbrella and light scarf fit inside. Keep trouser hems above the ankle so they stay out of splashes and dry quickly. I always pack this outfit for Venice, where late autumn high water can flood low-lying areas, and for northern cities, where rain often settles in for days.
20. Camel Coat And Burgundy Knit Italy Autumn Outfit

Camel and burgundy is a classic autumn pairing that never looks costumey. A burgundy crewneck or turtleneck goes with dark indigo jeans, chocolate trousers or a black midi skirt, under a tailored camel coat that falls near the knee. Brown leather ankle boots carry the warm palette down, and a dark structured bag grounds it. Gold earrings and a printed scarf with small touches of camel or burgundy tie the colors together. For cooler coloring, swap burgundy for deep plum and choose a taupe coat. Camel coats show marks easily, so I bring a lint roller and a small stain pen when this is my main coat. It looks great against old stone and suits sightseeing, scenic drives and dinner.
Covering Shoulders and Knees for Church Visits
Many of Italy's major churches and basilicas ask visitors to cover their shoulders and knees, and some turn people away at the door. St. Peter's Basilica is the best-known example, but smaller churches often ask the same. I plan at least one outfit per sightseeing day that passes without changes.
- Midi skirts and dresses already meet the rule. Minis and shorts don't, even with tights.
- Sleeveless or strappy tops need a layer. A cardigan or a large scarf in your bag covers the shoulders in seconds.
- Trousers and jeans are fine. Very ripped knees can draw a comment.
- Keep the cover-up light enough that you won't overheat walking between sites in the afternoon.
Cobblestones, Marble Steps and Your Feet
Italian city surfaces are hard on shoes. Cobblestones twist ankles and wear through thin soles, marble steps in churches and museums are slick when wet, and many historic centers are best seen on foot. I pack two pairs of walking shoes and alternate them so each dries and the pressure points change. Thick rubber soles with some tread are the priority. Stiletto and slim block heels catch in the gaps between stones, so I leave them out. Whatever you choose, break new shoes in at home for a few weeks first. A blister on day two can change the whole trip.
Pack for September Sun and November Fog
An autumn wardrobe for Italy has to cover warm September afternoons, crisp October days, wet city walks and cold November evenings, often within one trip if you're moving between regions. Build your suitcase around a tight color palette so coats, sweaters, trousers, dresses and shoes all mix. Put your effort into shoes above everything else, because most itineraries mean long walks on uneven stone. A trench, a blazer, a scarf and a weather-resistant jacket let you adjust without overpacking. Most of all, choose outfits that feel like you. When the clothes fit well and suit the day's plans, looking put together takes care of itself.
