Pants do more of the work in a fall closet than anything else I hang in it. They keep you warm, they sit under every coat, and the right pair makes a plain sweater look finished. This season the shapes worth knowing are straight and relaxed legs, plus a few newer ones: satin, balloon and barrel cuts, utility pockets, checks and deeper colors. None of those matters much unless the top, the jacket and the shoe are balanced against the leg. Below are twenty outfits built from casual weekends up to evening, with notes on who each one suits. Treat them as starting points and swap in the trousers you already own.

Wool, Ponte, Cord or Satin on a Rainy Commute
Before picking a shape, think about what the fabric will do on a wet, windy weekday. The same cut behaves very differently depending on what it's made of, and fall is hard on trousers.
- Wool and wool blends: my first choice for work. Wool resists wrinkles, sheds light drizzle and keeps you warm when it's damp.
- Ponte: comfortable and machine washable, holds its shape well, but can pill where the thighs rub.
- Corduroy: warm and casual, though it soaks up rain and takes a while to dry.
- Satin: dressy and fluid, but raindrops leave visible marks, so keep it for dry days and evenings.
- Denim: the hardest-wearing of all, but cold and heavy once it gets wet through.
If your days involve a long walk or public transport, I'd weight your pants toward wool and dark denim and save the delicate fabrics for when you know you'll be indoors.
1. Wide Leg Trousers And Fitted Sweater Fall Outfit

Wide-leg trousers are where I start most fall wardrobes, because they're comfortable and look polished with almost no effort. A high rise in charcoal, camel, navy or chocolate brown, then a fitted crewneck so the top isn't as full as the leg. A small front tuck shows the waist without making it feel like office wear. Pointed ankle boots peek out from the hem and keep you from looking swallowed. On a petite frame I hem them so they just kiss the shoe; tall women can let them run long and fluid. A wool coat over the top handles colder days.
2. Straight Leg Jeans And Trench Coat Fall Outfit

Straight-leg jeans and a trench are the outfit I'd pack if I could take only one. The denim should skim the hip and fall straight from the thigh without clinging at the calf. A fine-knit turtleneck or crewneck in cream, burgundy, gray or forest green goes underneath. A tan trench is worth owning mainly because cotton gabardine sheds a light shower and blocks wind, which a knit cardigan can't do. Loafers, low boots or clean sneakers depending on the day, and a printed scarf brings color up to the face. It suits almost any age because every layer can be loosened or removed.
3. Black Pants And Leather Jacket Fall Outfit

Black pants and a leather jacket give you a little edge and go straight from errands to dinner. I prefer straight or gently tapered pants here; a very wide leg under a short, stiff jacket looks unbalanced. Underneath, a soft white tee or thin ribbed sweater. A waist-length jacket shows your shape, while a relaxed cut gives room through the torso if you layer a knit beneath. Loafers keep the line clean and sneakers relax it. A burgundy bag adds color. If you skip real leather, a good faux version works, though it won't soften and mold to your shoulders the way hide does over a few seasons.
4. Cargo Pants And White T-Shirt Fall Outfit

Cargo pants look grown-up when everything else in the outfit stays quiet. I pick olive, khaki or black with a relaxed straight leg and flat pockets, since bellowed pockets stuffed with a phone add width right at the thigh. A heavy white tee and a brown or black leather blazer change the whole mood from camping to city. Sleek sneakers, lug-sole loafers or close-fitting boots, plus a structured tote, keep it from tipping into sportswear. Tuck the tee and add a belt for a defined waist. If you'd rather leave the shirt out, choose a jacket that stops above the widest part of your hips.
5. Brown Trousers And Cream Cardigan Fall Outfit

Brown trousers and a cream cardigan feel warm without much bulk, which makes this my pick for September. Chocolate, espresso or cinnamon in a straight or softly pleated cut, with a cream tank or tee under a waist-length cardigan left open at the top button. Brown loafers or suede ankle boots continue the tonal line. Mix your textures, say a brushed knit with a smooth wool trouser and a pebbled bag, or a head-to-toe neutral look flattens out. If brown near your face makes you look tired, the cream cardigan already helps; a burgundy scarf or a blue bag adds more lift.
6. Plaid Pants And Turtleneck Fall Outfit

Checked pants put pattern where it's easy to wear: below the waist, away from your face. I look for a check with only two or three colors in it, gray with brown or navy with muted red, then pull one of those shades into a solid fitted turtleneck. With a wool blazer and loafers it's a work outfit; with ankle boots and a short utility jacket it's a weekend one. The pattern does enough, so keep the bag and jewelry plain. A high rise and a flat front lie smoother under a tucked knit than pleats do. Checks in wool flannel are also hardwearing, which is why they come back every cold season.
7. Corduroy Pants And Denim Shirt Fall Outfit

Corduroy feels warm before you add a single layer, and that's why I love it from October on. Straight cords in rust, olive, camel or deep navy with a medium-wash denim shirt, tucked fully into a high rise or worn open over a fitted cotton top. Brown leather boots and a woven belt fit the palette. On cold days a quilted vest goes over the shirt. Wale size changes everything: fine pinwale looks smooth and almost dressy, while wide wale reads rustic and adds visual bulk at the hip. Denim and cord pair well because both are casual but have completely different surfaces.
8. Satin Pants And Chunky Knit Fall Outfit

Satin trousers next to a chunky sweater look odd on the hanger and right on the body. The fluid leg balances the heavy knit, as long as the sweater has a controlled shape and stops near the waist or upper hip. A front tuck helps if the knit is long. I'd pick black, champagne, navy, olive or deep brown, and pointed flats, kitten-heel mules or slim boots. Satin is a good alternative to jeans when you want something dressier but just as easy. It also shows every water mark and highlights curves, so for daily wear I go for a heavier, matte-backed satin rather than the thin, shiny kind.
9. Barrel Pants And Cropped Jacket Fall Outfit

Barrel pants curve out through the leg and narrow at the ankle, which gives an outfit a modern shape and also a lot of volume to manage. I balance them with a fitted knit and a cropped jacket that ends right at the waistband, in denim, suede or light wool. Neutrals are the easy version; rust, olive or burgundy show off the shape more. Keep the shoe low and narrow, loafers or slim sneakers, so the foot doesn't compete with the curve. I'd steer shorter women to a gentle barrel rather than an extreme one, because a very rounded leg can make the legs look shorter.
10. Flare Pants And Blazer Fall Outfit

Flares and a blazer lengthen the leg about as well as any pair of pants I know. Start with a high rise that fits close through the thigh and opens below the knee, then a tucked bodysuit or fine turtleneck. A single-breasted blazer squares the shoulders and mirrors the width of the hem. Platform loafers or heeled boots stop the hem dragging. This is the one pair I insist goes to the tailor with the exact shoes you'll wear, since a flare that's an inch too short loses its whole effect. Black flares with a camel blazer and an ivory top is the quiet version I'd suggest first.
11. Olive Pants And Striped Sweater Fall Outfit

Olive is the color I give to people who live in blue jeans and want a change. It acts like a neutral but looks seasonal. Straight, wide or gently tapered all work, with a cream sweater striped in navy, black or brown for crisp contrast. Tan loafers, brown boots or white sneakers. A denim jacket covers mild days and a camel coat takes over later. Roll the sweater sleeves once to show a watch. It's the outfit for school runs and weekend shopping, the days where you move a lot and want to look like you tried a little.
12. Ponte Pants And Long Coat Fall Outfit

Ponte pants with a long tailored coat are my answer for anyone who wants comfort and needs to look professional. Ponte is a double-knit, so it holds its shape better than jersey, but buy it thick and opaque with a flat waistband. Straight or wide-leg versions look far more polished than skinny ones. Add a fine knit or collared shirt and a knee-length wool coat in camel, charcoal, navy or deep green. Dark and earthy shades are easy to find, and they hide the light pilling ponte can develop at the inner thigh. Loafers or pointed boots and a structured tote finish a very good commuting outfit.
13. Capri Pants And Knee High Boots Fall Outfit

Capris make it into fall when tall boots cover the bare stretch of leg. Fitted or straight black capris that end below the knee, then black knee-high boots: matching the color creates one continuous line, so the short hem looks intentional rather than outgrown. A fitted turtleneck and an oversized blazer balance the slim lower half. In early fall, before you want tall boots, loafers with dark socks bridge the gap. The fit has to be slim at the knee, though. A loose capri bunches above the boot shaft and that ridge is the first thing anyone notices.
14. Red Pants And Gray Sweater Fall Outfit

Red trousers are a bold choice, and a soft gray sweater is what keeps them wearable. I'd choose a deep tomato, cranberry or brick shade over a bright fire-engine red for fall. Straight or tailored cuts repeat best. Add a heather-gray crewneck, black pointed shoes and a black structured bag. Silver jewelry suits the cool gray; gold warms up deeper reds. Don't add a third strong color. Let the pants lead. For colder days, a charcoal coat and a plain black belt add structure without stealing focus.
15. Dark Wash Jeans And Suede Jacket Fall Outfit

Dark denim and suede give you two strong textures that never fight. Choose straight, bootcut or relaxed jeans in deep indigo with almost no fading; bootcut in particular is having a real comeback and sits nicely over a boot. An ivory knit or chambray shirt underneath, then a camel, tobacco or chocolate suede jacket. Pointed ankle boots dress it up and low sneakers take it down. Match the belt loosely to the jacket. Real suede darkens and stiffens in rain, so I tell people to spray it with a protector first or buy brushed faux suede if they walk to work.
16. Leather Pants And Button Down Shirt Fall Outfit

Leather pants scare people until they see them with a plain button-down. Straight or wide-leg in black, espresso or burgundy, and choose a matte finish, because high shine reads costume in daylight. A relaxed white, pale blue or striped cotton shirt either tucked fully for a sharp line or open over a fitted tank. Loafers, pointed boots or minimal sneakers. A wool coat adds warmth without bringing in a second glossy surface. Genuine leather stretches a little with wear, so a pair that feels snug at first usually relaxes; coated or stretch faux leather is easier from day one.
17. Chocolate Brown Pants And Burgundy Knit Fall Outfit

Chocolate brown and burgundy sit close enough on the color wheel to look planned and far enough apart to give depth. Tailored brown pants in a straight or softly wide cut, then a burgundy crewneck, cardigan or mock-neck. If the pairing feels heavy, add cream in a coat or scarf. Dark brown loafers or boots keep the leg line long. Gold jewelry and a suede bag suit it. It goes from a work day to dinner without a change. If those deep shades drain your face, use the burgundy on the bottom and a lighter top instead.
18. Cream Pants And Camel Coat Fall Outfit

Cream pants don't need to be packed away in September. In fall I style them with heavier textures so they look seasonal: wool blend, corduroy or heavy twill, with a taupe or chocolate knit and a long camel coat. Every piece is a slightly different shade and surface, which is why the neutral palette reads polished and not flat. Pale trousers are very much in rotation for autumn now. Brown ankle boots give contrast, and a matching leather bag ties it together. Check the fabric is lined or dense enough not to show pockets through it. On rainy days, wear a cropped hem that stays clear of puddle spray.
19. Pinstripe Trousers And Sweater Vest Fall Outfit

Pinstripes and a sweater vest give you a smart layered look without committing to a full suit. Gray, navy or black trousers in a straight or relaxed cut, a crisp white button-down, and a fitted or slightly roomy vest on top. Burgundy, forest green, camel or charcoal all suit traditional stripes. Loafers with good socks feel classic. Bulk is the problem I see most: a stiff shirt plus a thick vest adds inches at the waist, so pick a thin cotton shirt and a fine-gauge vest. Tuck both into high-rise trousers for a waist, or leave the shirt out under a short vest.
20. Velvet Pants And Silk Blouse Fall Outfit

Velvet pants are my favorite for holiday dinners and fall parties. Straight or wide-leg in black, navy, emerald, plum or chocolate, with a simple silk or satin blouse in ivory or a close tonal shade. Keep the blouse plain so the velvet is the only rich texture. Pointed pumps, heeled boots or polished flats depending on how long you'll stand. Velvet's pile crushes when you sit, so steam it from the inside before wearing, never press an iron flat on the face. Tuck the blouse and choose a waistband at your natural waist for the best proportions.
Hemming to the Shoe, Not the Bare Foot
Almost every outfit in this list depends on the hem landing in the right place, and most store-bought pants are cut long to fit as many people as possible. The rule I follow is simple: decide the shoe first, then hem the trousers while you're wearing it.
Where each leg should finish
- Wide-leg: about half an inch off the floor in your shoe, so it skims without collecting dirt.
- Straight-leg trousers: a slight break, where the front just touches the top of the shoe.
- Flares: long enough to cover most of the shoe, which means hemming with your heel or platform on.
- Ankle and cropped pants: right at or just above the ankle bone, so they read deliberate, not short.
- Tapered and barrel cuts: no break at all, the narrow ankle should sit clean above the shoe.
If you wear the same trousers with both flats and heeled boots, hem for the flat. A wide leg that's slightly short in heels looks fine; one that drags in flats frays within weeks. Hemming is one of the cheapest alterations a tailor does, and it changes how expensive pants look more than anything else.
Three Pairs I'd Buy Before Any Trend Pair
If I were rebuilding a fall wardrobe from nothing, I'd start with straight dark jeans, a wide-leg trouser in a dark neutral and one pair of corduroys, then add a satin, barrel or checked pair once those are working. Every outfit above comes down to balancing shape, color and texture against the leg. Start with the pants you already reach for and build the sweaters, blazers and coats around them. Get the hems right and wear comfortable shoes, and even the simplest combination will look intentional. Adjust jacket lengths and fabric weights for your body and your weather.
