Most of what I dress people in from September to November comes down to one problem: the morning is cold, the afternoon isn't, and nobody wants to carry a coat all day. The 25 outfits below are built around that. You'll see relaxed denim, decent knitwear, a few checks and some proper jackets, mixed with casual weekend looks and a handful sharp enough for the office. None of them need a specific body type or budget. Use the colors you already own, play with where things end on your body, and swap in accessories that feel like you.

When the Morning Is Frosty and the Afternoon Isn't
Early and mid-autumn can easily run from the low 40s at breakfast to the high 60s by mid-afternoon. I build these outfits in three layers, each of which can come off on its own and still leave a complete look.
- A base that looks finished alone: a fitted tee, thin turtleneck or button-down. If it only works under a sweater, it's the wrong base.
- A middle layer you can tie, carry or drape: a cardigan, vest or shacket. Lighter knits fold into a bag; chunky ones don't.
- An outer layer for wind and rain: trench, barn jacket, leather or wool, depending on the forecast.
Natural fibers make this easier. Merino and cotton breathe once you warm up, while cheaper acrylic knits trap heat and leave you sweaty by lunch. If you only buy one better piece this season, I'd make it a fine merino sweater, since it works as a base or a middle layer.
Watch the bulk at the arms. A sleeve that's snug on its own will bunch under a jacket, so try your middle layer on under your outer one before you leave. If the jacket pulls across the back when you reach forward, the sweater is too thick for it, and you'll be uncomfortable driving or carrying bags all day.
1. Trench Coat Fall Outfit With Jeans

I trust a trench more than any other jacket in autumn because it handles drizzle and wind without the bulk of wool. Wear it over a white tee or light crewneck with straight-leg blue jeans. Beige keeps it classic; olive or chocolate makes it feel more seasonal. Loafers, ankle boots or white sneakers all work. Length is the fit question I settle first: a petite frame usually looks best in a trench that stops above the knee, while a taller woman can carry a midi. Roll the sleeves on a warm afternoon and button up with a scarf once the sun drops.
2. Barn Jacket Fall Outfit With Dark Jeans

A barn jacket is a workhorse, and it looks it, which is the charm. Brown, olive or navy over a plaid button-down or fine knit, with dark straight jeans and riding boots or sturdy ankle boots underneath. The cotton canvas these jackets are made from softens with every wear, so a stiff new one will look much better after a few weeks. Leave it open and loosely tuck the shirt for a softer shape. If you size up to fit a sweater underneath, check the shoulder seam still lands near your shoulder. I'd wear this for markets, leaf-peeping drives and anything muddy.
3. Oversized Blazer Fall Outfit With Wide-Leg Pants

Oversized tailoring only works if something underneath is close to the body. Put a roomy charcoal, camel or checked blazer over a fitted turtleneck, then add high-rise wide-leg trousers. The common mistake is a big blazer over big trousers over a loose top, which reads as a size too large everywhere. A slim belt under the jacket brings the waist back. Pointed ankle boots lengthen the trouser line; minimalist sneakers make it weekend-ready. I'd use this for a creative office or any day that swings between meetings and errands.
4. Cardigan Fall Outfit With Satin Midi Skirt

Soft knit against fluid satin is a contrast I like for days that end at dinner. Choose a relaxed cardigan in cream, gray, burgundy or forest green with a satin midi in a matching neutral. Button it and front-tuck it into the waistband, or wear it open over a camisole if it's mild. Cropped cardigans suit high-rise skirts; longer ones need a belt. Suede ankle boots add texture, though pointed flats are lighter. Watch for static: satin and some synthetic knits cling to each other on dry days, so a slip or a quick anti-static spray helps.
5. Sweater Dress Fall Outfit With Knee-High Boots

The sweater dress and knee-high boot pairing is one I recommend to almost everyone because it's one decision, not five. Pick a ribbed or smooth midi that follows the body without gripping. Chocolate, charcoal, oatmeal and deep red all sit well against autumn color. I'd keep the boot heel manageable for a full day. Straight or slightly flared shapes suit most figures, and a wrap-front version lets you adjust how much waist you show. Under it, opaque tights or a thin thermal; over it, a long wool coat.
6. Leather Jacket Fall Outfit With Black Jeans

Leather over basics is about as reliable as fall dressing gets. Start with a white tee, fine turtleneck or striped sweater, add black straight jeans, then a fitted leather jacket in black, espresso or burgundy. Chelsea boots keep it sleek; retro sneakers relax it. Matching the boot to the jeans gives one long line through the leg, which is the easiest way to look taller in this outfit. If full leather feels heavy or warm, a soft faux version or collarless cut is lighter. Leather jackets loosen and mold to your arms with wear, so a snug fit at first is normal.
7. Denim Jacket Fall Outfit With Hoodie And Leggings

Hoodie, denim jacket and leggings is the outfit for weekends that start early and involve a lot of walking. The denim jacket needs real room in the arms and shoulders to go over a hoodie, so I often size up or look for an oversized cut. Choose thick, opaque leggings or ponte pants with a supportive waistband; thin leggings go see-through when you bend. White leather sneakers brighten it, but lug-sole boots are better in rain. A jacket that reaches the upper thigh gives more coverage over leggings.
8. Striped Sweater Fall Outfit With Ecru Jeans

Ecru jeans don't need to be packed away in September. What makes them work in autumn is weight: a thicker, opaque denim and a substantial striped knit in navy and cream. Ground the pale colors with tan loafers, brown ankle boots or dark flats, then bring in warmth with a camel belt and a cognac bag. On colder days, a navy pea coat. A partial front tuck shows the waist without looking formal. Light denim shows mud and coffee instantly, so I keep a stain pen in my bag whenever I wear it.
9. Plaid Blazer Fall Outfit With Mini Skirt And Tights

Plaid blazer, black turtleneck, mini skirt and opaque tights is preppy without tipping into costume, as long as the bag and shoes stay plain. Loafers, low-heeled ankle boots or sleek knee-highs all work. If the blazer has several colors, I repeat one of them in the skirt or bag to connect everything. Sit down in the skirt before you commit; if it rides up uncomfortably, a knee-length version gives the same effect. On truly cold days, add a wool coat over the whole lot.
10. Utility Jacket Fall Outfit With Cargo Pants

Utility pieces look sharp when the colors are close but not identical. A fitted ribbed top or henley, straight cargo pants in olive, khaki or dark brown, and a structured utility jacket one shade off from the trousers. Matching them exactly tends to look like a uniform. With big cargo pockets on the legs, I'd choose a plainer jacket so pockets aren't competing everywhere. Push the sleeves up to show the fitted layer. Lace-up boots or leather sneakers and gold hoops soften the military edge, and it's an excellent sightseeing outfit.
11. Suede Jacket Fall Outfit With Brown Trousers

Tonal brown looks expensive when the textures differ. Here it's a cream knit, chocolate wide-leg trousers and a caramel or espresso suede jacket, with burgundy pointed boots as a quiet color step. I'd balance full trousers with a cropped jacket and pair a longer jacket with a straight leg. Suede is the piece to watch: it marks in rain and darkens where it gets wet, so check the forecast or spray it with a suede protector before the first wear. A silk scarf or brushed gold finishes it for work or a restaurant.
12. Shacket Fall Outfit With Leggings And Chelsea Boots

On days that don't call for a coat, a shacket is what I reach for. Wear an oversized plaid, camel or charcoal one over a fitted long-sleeve tee, with thick black leggings or slim ponte pants. Chunky Chelsea boots balance the bulk up top and cope with damp pavements. If you're wearing leggings, choose a shacket long enough to cover the hips. Petite women should go less oversized, because a very big shirt jacket can swallow a small frame. A beanie and scarf handle chilly mornings.
13. Camel Coat Fall Outfit With Black Trousers

Camel coat over black is the outfit I suggest when someone wants to look put together with zero thought. A fitted black knit, tailored straight trousers, and a knee-length or midi camel coat, finished with loafers, pointed boots or low heels. Worn open, the coat makes two strong vertical lines down the body, which flatters nearly every shape. Keep the trouser hem close to the top of the shoe. If black feels harsh on you, espresso or navy underneath softens it. Camel shows marks easily, so a lint roller and quick spot cleaning keep it looking fresh.
14. Puffer Vest Fall Outfit With Jeans And Sneakers

A puffer vest warms your core while leaving your arms free, so I wear one on any day spent moving around. Layer it over a sweatshirt, quarter-zip or striped long-sleeve with relaxed straight jeans and supportive retro sneakers. A slim vest looks neater; a boxy one fits over chunky knits. When both vest and sweatshirt are oversized, I keep the jeans straight rather than wide so the shape doesn't go square. Olive, navy, burgundy and cream all work. Most down vests compress well, so it can be stuffed in a bag once the afternoon warms up.
15. Knit Polo Fall Outfit With Pleated Midi Skirt

A knit polo has a collar's neatness and a sweater's comfort, which suits office days well. Tuck a fitted one into a pleated midi in navy, camel or deep green. Loafers with ankle socks lean preppy; pointed ankle boots lengthen the leg. Keep jewelry minimal so the collar stays the detail. Fine pleats add movement without bulk at the hip, while broad pleats look more tailored but add width, which matters if you're curvy there. Layer a cropped wool jacket or trench on top when it cools.
16. Corduroy Suit Fall Outfit With Ankle Boots

Corduroy is one of my favorite autumn fabrics because it's warm and textured, and it gets softer with every wash. A matching blazer and high-rise trousers in rust, olive, chocolate or navy, with a light cream sweater underneath. The wale decides the mood: fine-wale corduroy looks sharp for work, while wide wale feels relaxed and vintage, though it adds visual bulk. Pointed ankle boots sharpen it; leather sneakers relax it. The real value is splitting the suit later, with the blazer over jeans and the trousers under knits.
17. Floral Midi Dress Fall Outfit With Tall Boots

A floral dress carries into autumn once the print darkens and the layers get heavier. Choose a midi with burgundy, navy, rust or forest green in the print, then add a chunky cardigan or cropped jacket and knee-high leather boots. Small prints are quieter; large florals make the dress the point. On colder days, opaque tights and a thin thermal go underneath. A V-neck dress can also be layered over a fitted turtleneck, which I like for office days. Pull the cardigan color from the print so the outfit holds together.
18. Burgundy Monochrome Fall Outfit

All-burgundy feels rich without the starkness of black. Wear a wine knit with wide-leg trousers or a midi skirt in a nearby shade, plus burgundy ankle boots, then add a chocolate belt and bag for gentle contrast. Exact matching is hard and rarely necessary. Mixing oxblood, merlot and berry gives depth, especially across different finishes. Gold warms it; silver cools it. If full monochrome feels too much, a cream shirt under the sweater, with collar and cuffs showing, breaks it up nicely.
19. Sweater Vest Fall Outfit With Jeans And Oxfords

A sweater vest makes plain denim look considered. Put a cable, argyle or solid vest over a crisp button-down, with straight-leg jeans in a medium or dark wash and leather oxfords or loafers. Let the collar, cuffs and shirt hem show slightly, because that layering is what gives the outfit depth. Cropped vests define the waist; longer, relaxed ones cover more. If the vest is patterned, the shirt and jeans should be plain. A structured tote makes it workable for an office or a campus day.
20. Raincoat Fall Outfit With Knit Dress And Boots

Rainy days are where people give up on getting dressed, but a knit midi under a proper raincoat looks good and stays dry. Look for a coat with a hood, adjustable cuffs and enough room for the knit underneath. Water-resistant fabric handles a shower; for a full day of rain I'd want a properly waterproof coat with sealed seams. Waterproof Chelsea boots or rubberized knee-highs with good grip finish it. A coated-fabric crossbody protects your phone. Belt a loose dress under the coat for shape.
21. Fair Isle Sweater Fall Outfit With Corduroy Pants

A Fair Isle sweater brings pattern you can wear with almost anything plain. I pair one with straight corduroy pants in brown, rust, forest green or cream, plus lace-up leather boots or clogs. A waxed jacket or simple wool coat adds a layer without fighting the pattern. When buying, choose one whose colors already appear in your closet so it works with several bottoms. A partial tuck stops a loose knit from hiding your waist entirely. Wool Fair Isle knits can pill under bag straps, so a crossbody worn on the same side every day will show it first.
22. Bomber Jacket Fall Outfit With Slip Skirt

A bomber over a satin slip skirt is a sporty-meets-fluid combination I like for casual dinners. Start with a fitted crewneck tee or thin sweater, add a midi slip skirt in black, olive, bronze or plum, and layer a cropped bomber over the top. The ribbed hem of the bomber should land near your natural waist, since that's where it creates shape. With a very fluid skirt, choose a bomber with more structure. Clean sneakers or slim ankle boots finish it, and a small shoulder bag keeps it compact.
23. Double Denim Fall Outfit With Ankle Boots

Double denim works when the washes are chosen on purpose. My go-to is a chambray or medium-wash shirt over dark straight-leg jeans, with a brown leather belt dividing the two. Close washes give a jumpsuit effect; clear contrast feels more relaxed. Both are fine, but washes that are almost the same and slightly off look accidental. Pointed suede ankle boots and a cognac or burgundy tote finish it. A cream turtleneck under the open shirt adds warmth, and a plaid scarf or wool coat handles colder days.
24. Tailored Vest Fall Outfit With Wide-Leg Trousers

A tailored vest with matching wide-leg trousers is a suit without the jacket, and it layers well. Wear a fitted long-sleeve knit or crisp shirt underneath, then high-rise wide trousers in gray, navy, camel or chocolate, with pointed loafers or heeled ankle boots. The fit check is the buttons: if the vest pulls into creases across the front, it's too small, and that's very visible. The trousers should nearly touch the top of the shoe. A cream base layer softens it; a trench or long coat covers it outside.
25. Wool Coat Fall Outfit With Hoodie And Joggers

A long wool coat over a matching hoodie and joggers is my answer to travel days. The set should be gray, cream, navy or chocolate, and the joggers need to taper cleanly at the ankle. Check the hoodie sits under the coat without bunching at the shoulders; a slim set works better than an oversized one here. Clean leather sneakers keep it fresh, and a backpack or tote carries everything. A matching set looks most streamlined, though two neutrals close in tone work too. It's comfortable enough for a flight and still looks like you got dressed.
Caring for Corduroy, Suede and Waxed Cotton
Several of these looks rely on fabrics that need a little looking after, and a few minutes each week keeps them going for years.
Corduroy
Wash it inside out on a cool, gentle cycle so the ridges don't flatten or turn shiny. Skip the high-heat dryer; hang it and smooth the pile with your hand while it's damp.
Suede
Treat new suede with a protector spray before the first outing. If it gets wet, blot it, let it dry away from a radiator, then brush the nap back up with a suede brush. Heat makes it stiff and can crack it.
Waxed cotton and wool knits
Never machine wash a waxed barn or field jacket; sponge it clean and re-wax it once a year when it stops shedding water. For wool sweaters, remove pills with a fabric comb rather than pulling them, and fold rather than hang so the shoulders don't stretch.
Your Coat Decides More Than You Think
Everything above starts from the same few pieces: straight jeans, tailored trousers, good knits, comfortable boots and a coat suited to where you live. Get those right and the rest is texture. Suede, corduroy, satin, leather and patterned knits give the season its depth, and you don't need all of them. A different shoe, a new color pairing or one well-chosen jacket can make familiar clothes feel new. Dress for the day you're actually having, and getting ready in autumn stays simple.
