Black hair gives you a head start on a surprising number of characters, from anime leads to film villains to cartoon princesses. Some of the thirty below need nothing more than your own hair and a brush. Others need a wig cut into blunt bangs, a braid or a set of spikes, because the shape matters more than the colour. One thing I'd tell anyone buying a wig for these: pick a soft or natural black over a very shiny jet black, since cheap fibre with a high shine looks plastic in photos. Each entry covers the garment base, hair, makeup, accessories and shoes, and I've flagged where sewing helps and where a thrifted piece will do.

Natural Hair or a Wig for These Characters?
I sort these characters into three groups before deciding what to buy. The first group can be done with your own hair if it's roughly the right length: Wednesday, Morticia, Sailor Mars, Nico Robin and Clark Kent mostly need a part and a brush. The second needs a cut or a shape your real hair probably doesn't have, like the bobs of Mavis, Kiki, Rukia and Ada. The third is sculpture: Megumi, Sasuke, Bayonetta and Levi almost always need a styled wig.
What to look for in a black wig
- Low shine. A soft or natural black reads as hair in photos; a high-gloss jet black reads as plastic.
- Heat-resistant fibre if you'll trim bangs or flat-iron it. Ordinary fibre melts or frizzes under heat.
- A wig cap in your skin tone or hair colour, so gaps at the parting don't show white.
- Enough density at the crown for spiky styles. Thin wigs show the cap once you tease them.
Cheap wigs shed at first. I give a new one a gentle brush-out with a wide-tooth comb outside or over a bin before styling, and the shedding usually settles after that.
1. Wednesday Addams Black Dress Cosplay

Wednesday is the easiest sewing project here, because the only custom part is the collar. Any knee-length black dress works; I cut a white pointed collar and a pair of cuffs from cotton poplin, interface them so they stay crisp, and tack them on by hand so they come off later. Opaque tights, chunky Mary Janes or oxfords, and two smooth centre-parted braids. A braided wig covers shorter hair. Keep the makeup pale and matte with a muted berry lip. A small old book is the prop. The silhouette is so plain that a wrinkled collar ruins it, so press it the morning you wear it.
2. Morticia Addams Long Black Gown Cosplay

Morticia lives or dies on the hem. A floor-length black gown with fitted sleeves and a flared, almost mermaid hem is the shape, and if I were making it I'd use a matte jersey, because it drapes close without the cling of a shiny knit. Check that you can climb a step in it; a fishtail that's too narrow at the knee becomes a hobble. Low-heeled black pumps underneath, waist-length hair with a razor-sharp centre part, smoky grey eyes and deep red lips. One artificial rose is the only prop she needs. Long black press-on nails finish the hands.
3. Mavis Dracula Striped Tights Cosplay

The striped tights do most of the work for Mavis, so buy them first and match everything to their red. A short-sleeved black skater dress, red canvas sneakers or high-tops, and a rounded bob with side-swept bangs. A bob wig saves cutting your own hair, and it's one of the easier wig shapes to trim at home. Pale base, big winged liner, rosy cheeks. Removable fangs are fine for photos but come out before you eat. A tiny black suitcase or a bat-shaped bag makes the prop. Skater dresses are a gentle first knit project if you want to sew one.
4. Lydia Deetz Red Wedding Dress Cosplay

Lydia's red wedding dress is a big sewing job, and I'd be honest about that up front. The real look is layered red tulle and ruffles with a high neck, sheer sleeves and a full ankle-length skirt. Buying a red ruffled dress and adding a tulle overlay is the shortcut most people take, and it's a good one. Red tights and red ankle boots, hair teased up at the crown with loose pieces round the face, pale matte skin and smudged grey eyes. A light tulle veil and a small fake bouquet. Keep the skirt off the floor, since tulle catches on every shoe behind you in a crowd.
5. Wonder Woman Classic Armor Cosplay

Wonder Woman needs structure in the right places and softness everywhere else. A red top or bodysuit with gold trim, a blue skirt or shorts with white stars, a gold belt, cuffs and a tiara. I'd make the cuffs, belt and tiara from EVA foam, which heat-shapes into curves with a hairdryer or heat gun and holds them once cool, then seal and paint it gold. Red boot covers over comfortable shoes beat real knee boots for walking. Long black waves, red lipstick and a little gold shadow. The lasso is soft gold cord coiled on the belt.
6. Princess Jasmine Turquoise Outfit Cosplay

Jasmine reads from turquoise and a long sectioned ponytail. A cropped turquoise top with proper support and matching harem pants gathered at waist and ankle; a jumpsuit gives the same shape with more security. If you sew the trousers, a lightweight chiffon over an opaque lining keeps the float without going see-through. Curled-toe flats, gold earrings and a jewelled headband. The bubble ponytail is made with clear elastics every few inches, plus a clip-in extension if your hair is shorter. A gold lamp purse or a plush tiger is plenty of prop.
7. Mulan Matchmaker Dress Cosplay

Mulan's matchmaker look is careful colour blocking: a pale cream wrap top under a pink-and-red robe or overskirt, a wide blue sash and a floor-length skirt that still lets you stride. Black flats keep it practical. The updo goes over a bun form with a decorative flower comb. If you're sewing, the sash is the piece to get right; I'd interface it so it stays wide instead of rolling into a rope. A small folding fan with plain floral art is enough prop. Keep it clearly the film character and skip ceremonial objects.
8. Kiki Blue Dress Cosplay

Kiki is close to everyday clothing. A loose navy knee-length dress with short sleeves and a round neck, red ballet flats or Mary Janes, and a short black bob. The oversized red bow is the one thing worth making, and I'd sew it from stiff cotton with a layer of interfacing so it stands up instead of drooping; a plain bow from ribbon goes floppy in an hour. Light makeup. A small broom from twigs and a dowel, or a brown crossbody bag with a plush black cat poking out, which is easier in a crowd. Good for warm halls.
9. Sailor Mars Red Skirt Cosplay

Sailor Mars needs clean lines more than complicated pattern work. A white sailor-style top or bodysuit with a purple collar and a red chest bow, a red pleated skirt, white elbow gloves and a purple back bow. Pleats are where a homemade skirt usually looks off, so I'd press each pleat and edge-stitch it on the inside to keep it sharp. Red flats or low block heels instead of pumps. Long straight hair with a centre part, sharp liner, red lipstick, a tiny red forehead accent and star earrings. Shorts under the skirt, always.
10. Nezuko Pink Kimono Cosplay

Nezuko is layers, so plan how they stay closed. A pink geometric-print kimono-style robe tied with a red-and-white sash, a dark brown haori-style coat, white leg wraps and flat sandals over dark socks. Robes like this tend to slip open when you walk; a hidden snap or a few hand stitches at the overlap fixes it. The hair is long black fading to orange-red ends, easiest with clip-ins or a gradient wig. Pink shadow and soft brows. Carry the green bamboo mouthpiece for photos rather than wearing it all day, since it makes talking and drinking awkward.
11. Mikasa Ackerman Uniform Cosplay

Mikasa's look is a cropped tan jacket, white shirt and trousers, a brown waist wrap and that red scarf. The harness is the fiddly bit; I'd make it from brown webbing or faux-leather strap with sliding buckles, so it adjusts once you're dressed and doesn't dig in when you sit. Knee-high brown boots. A chin-length layered bob with long side bangs, ideally a matte wig. Wrap the scarf loosely so the jacket still shows. A satchel or a small insignia patch replaces any blades. Fit the straps sitting down as well as standing.
12. Yor Forger Black Party Dress Cosplay

Yor's party dress is a fitted halter fit-and-flare in black with a structured bodice and knee hem. A structured bodice needs either boning or a firm interlining, or the halter will pull the front down over the evening; fashion tape helps, but it isn't a substitute for structure. Black thigh-high socks or tights and low ankle boots. Long hair half-up with a gold rose headband and two sections framing the face. Red shadow at the lash line, muted red lips, gold drop earrings. An artificial red rose in place of her weapons.
13. Kaguya Shinomiya School Uniform Cosplay

Kaguya is a uniform where crispness is everything. A long-sleeved black dress with a white sailor collar, red ribbon tie, fitted waist and knee skirt, then black tights and loafers. Waist-length straight hair with blunt bangs and a red ribbon tied round one small section at the back. A heat-resistant wig lets you flat-iron the bangs perfectly straight on low heat, which ordinary fibre won't survive. Porcelain-style base, pink blush, thin liner. A notebook or a structured school bag. Press the collar and skirt right before wearing; a limp collar is the first thing people notice.
14. Yumeko Jabami Red Blazer Cosplay

Yumeko's red blazer is the whole costume from across a room. A fitted red blazer trimmed in black over a white shirt and black ribbon tie, a dark pleated skirt, black tights and loafers. If you're adding the black trim to a thrifted red blazer, bias tape stitched along the lapel edge is the neat way to do it. Very long straight hair with blunt bangs and a slight inward curl. Skip coloured contacts unless they're fitted by an eye professional; warm red-brown shadow gives the effect safely. A fan of plain paper cards is the prop.
15. Nico Robin Purple Top Cosplay

Nico Robin is a good pick if you'd rather wear separates. A fitted purple top with a modest neckline, a long coral or pink wrap skirt and a coordinating sash. Wrap skirts open as you walk, so I'd add a hidden snap at the inner corner. Gold hoops, purple ankle boots or low heels, and long straight centre-parted hair. Orange-tinted sunglasses pushed up on the head are the detail fans spot. Bronzed skin and soft smoky eyes. A thick notebook or rolled map as the prop. It suits many body shapes because the wrap adjusts.
16. Rukia Kuchiki Black Robe Cosplay

Rukia's robe is a simple shape with a lot of fabric. A loose black robe with wide sleeves over a white under-collar, a wide white sash, and black pants or shorts underneath. White split-toe socks and flat straw-look sandals with an insole. A short layered bob with one piece falling between the eyes. Wide sleeves are the thing to check: I'd hem them so they clear your wrists when your arms hang, or they drag through food and doorways. Clean matte makeup. A plush rabbit bag in place of the sword.
17. Tifa Lockhart White Tank Cosplay

Tifa is sporty basics plus a few pieces you'll likely make. A fitted white tank over a supportive black sports top, a black pleated skort, opaque tights and red combat-style boots. Black suspenders and fingerless gloves, and a red arm guard I'd make from flexible foam with an elastic strap so it stays put without pinching. Long straight hair with a side part and the ends tied in a small red ribbon. Natural makeup. Suspenders slide off sloping shoulders, so stitch a small fabric loop under each strap at the back to keep them crossed.
18. Ada Wong Red Dress Cosplay

Ada's red dress is a cheongsam-inspired shape with a high collar and a side slit, layered over fitted black shorts. A mandarin collar needs firm interfacing to stand, which is why bought versions often flop. Sheer black tights and low black ankle boots, not stilettos. A sleek chin-length bob with a deep side part and curved ends. Winged liner and classic red lips. A narrow fabric shoulder harness is purely decorative here. Sit down in the dress before the day; a high slit plus a tight hem can be awkward on low chairs.
19. Bayonetta Black Bodysuit Cosplay

Bayonetta is the most structural hair on this list. A full-coverage black bodysuit or jumpsuit with textured panels, a gold belt, chains, long gloves and tall boots with a wide stable heel. The beehive needs a support inside; I'd build a light foam or rolled-wig-fibre core and sew the wig around it, since piling real height with spray alone collapses. Narrow black glasses with decorated arms, sharp liner, a beauty mark and berry gloss. A jewelled compact or an ornate book as the prop. Wear the wig and boots together for an hour at home first.
20. Nana Osaki Punk Dress Cosplay

Nana Osaki is the best closet cosplay here if you already own any punk pieces. A black fitted top or mini dress over a mesh shirt, a red plaid skirt, black tights and buckled ankle boots, with a cropped faux-leather jacket over it. A short choppy bob with feathered bangs. Smoky liner, cool rose lips, dark nails, silver chains and a studded bracelet. A light microphone prop or a mic-shaped purse. Faux leather from thrift racks often has cracked seams, so check the underarms before buying. No sewing required unless you want to.
21. Monkey D. Luffy Red Vest Cosplay

Luffy is cheap and cool to wear. An open red sleeveless vest, over a plain undershirt if you like, knee-length blue cuffed shorts, a yellow waist sash and sturdy sandals. Short tousled black hair. A small curved mark under one eye in eyeliner. The straw hat is the essential piece; a wide-brim one with a red band, held on with a thin elastic under the hair at the back, because brims catch wind and get knocked off in crowds. A cloth map as a prop. You could sew the vest in an afternoon from cotton twill.
22. Levi Ackerman Scout Uniform Cosplay

Levi shares Mikasa's uniform, so the same harness pattern works for both. White shirt, fitted white trousers, a cropped tan jacket with wing patches, a dark waist wrap and brown straps. Knee-high riding boots or boot covers over flats. The undercut is a wig job for most people: short at the sides, longer straight sections across the forehead. Soft grey contour under the eyes. A folded cleaning cloth or a teacup suits him better than any gear. White trousers show everything, so pick a heavy twill that isn't see-through.
23. Sebastian Michaelis Butler Cosplay

Sebastian is formalwear, and the fit is what makes it convincing. A fitted black tailcoat or long blazer over a white shirt, grey vest and narrow black tie, tailored trousers, white gloves and polished shoes. If you're buying a thrifted tailcoat, having the sleeves shortened so a little white cuff shows is the alteration I'd prioritise. A layered matte wig with long bangs over one eye. Pale base and neat dark brows. A silver chain, lapel pin and serving tray with a white napkin over one arm. It packs flat and reuses well.
24. Roy Mustang Blue Uniform Cosplay

Roy Mustang's uniform is a royal blue high-collared jacket with silver trim and matching trousers. I'd look for a blue band or military-style jacket second-hand and add trim with flat braid, which is far less work than drafting the jacket. A black undershirt, a wide black belt, tall black boots or polished ankle boots, a silver cord at the shoulder and fabric insignia. Short side-parted hair with pointed front pieces. White gloves with an embroidered circle on the back are his signature. A clipboard is the prop.
25. Sasuke Uchiha Blue Shirt Cosplay

Sasuke's early outfit is about the simplest anime build there is. A navy short-sleeved shirt with a raised collar and the fan emblem on the back, white knee shorts, dark arm warmers and blue open-toe boots over socks. The raised collar needs interfacing to stand; without it, it folds over like a polo. The spiky back hair is far easier with a pre-styled wig than with product on real hair. A dark forehead band and a small waist pouch. Skip weapon props. The blue and white blocking is what makes him read.
26. Megumi Fushiguro Black Uniform Cosplay

Megumi is an understated black uniform under very loud hair. A fitted black high-collared jacket with gold buttons, tapered trousers and black boots or high-tops, with enough ease through the shoulders and knees to move. The spikes are the real work: a heat-resistant wig, teased at the roots, shaped with a strong-hold spray and pointed outward from the crown. Matte makeup and slightly deeper brows. A plain school bag as the prop. Steam the jacket before wearing, and pin the wig at several points, because spiky wigs are top-heavy and shift.
27. Prince Zuko Red Robe Cosplay

Zuko is layered reds over black. A dark red wrap tunic, slim black trousers, a wide burgundy sash and shoulder pieces, which I'd shape from thin EVA foam so they move when you lift your arms. Flat black boots. Short tousled hair or the later shoulder-length half-up version. The scar can be suggested with red makeup around one eye, blended soft so it looks drawn rather than wounded; patch-test any red cream first, as red pigment stains some skin. A scroll or teacup as a prop. Skip fire effects entirely.
28. Hiro Hamada Purple Hoodie Cosplay

Hiro is a streetwear closet cosplay. A red tee under a blue or purple zip hoodie, beige cargo shorts or slim trousers, white socks and red-and-white high-tops. Messy upward spikes with a washable styling cream on real hair, or a short spiked wig for a shape that lasts the day. Minimal makeup. A small robotics notebook, a controller-shaped prop or a compact backpack. Leave out heavy built props. Most of this may already be in a teenager's wardrobe, which is why it's the one I'd suggest to someone trying cosplay for the first time.
29. Aladdin Purple Vest Cosplay

Aladdin is about as cool to wear as cosplay gets. A sleeveless purple vest over a cream tank or tee, loose white harem pants gathered at the ankle, a wide red sash and soft brown slip-ons. Fluffy uneven hair with one piece over the forehead, and a small red fez held on with elastic. White trousers are the risk, so I'd line them or choose a heavy enough cotton that they aren't sheer. Secure the sash with hidden snaps. A gold lamp bag or a plush monkey as the prop. Thrifted separates cover all of it.
30. Clark Kent Superman Reveal Cosplay

Clark Kent's reveal is office clothes with a superhero layer underneath. A white button-down left partly open over a fitted blue top with the red-and-yellow emblem, charcoal trousers, a black belt, polished shoes and a loosened tie. I'd attach a short red cape under the collar with snaps so it can come out for photos and tuck away otherwise. A neat side part with one curl at the forehead, black rectangular glasses and natural makeup. A reporter notebook or a mock newspaper. It suits anyone and needs almost no sewing.
Cutting Bangs and Setting Spikes on a Wig
Most of the heavy lifting in this list is hair shaping, and it's more like sewing than people expect: measure, pin and cut a little at a time.
Blunt bangs
Put the wig on a head form, or on your own head, and pin it where it will sit. Comb the bangs straight down, then cut them longer than you want, holding the scissors vertically and snipping up into the edge rather than straight across. That point-cutting softens the line so it doesn't look like a doll's fringe. Take a few millimetres more off at a time until they sit just at the brow.
Spikes that last a whole day
- Section the hair where each spike will start and tease it hard at the root.
- Twist the length into a point and coat it with a strong-hold spray or a little craft glue diluted with water for the stiffest styles.
- Let each spike dry fully, ideally overnight, before touching it.
- Pin the wig at the temples and nape, since top-heavy styles slide backward.
Store styled wigs on a form or stuffed with tissue in a box, never squashed in a bag. A good shape will survive several wears if it's kept that way.
Your Own Black Hair Is Half the Costume
Dark hair suits a wider range of characters than people expect, from cartoon kids to polished villains. Start with the character whose shape you can manage: your own black hair saves money, while a matte wig is worth it for exact bangs, extreme length or spikes. Sew or alter the one piece that defines the costume, and buy or thrift the rest. Comfortable shoes and light props make a long day bearable. Colour and signature details carry the character far more than matching their face or build.
