A good Disney costume is mostly color and shape. Get a character's signature palette and silhouette right, add one memorable accessory, and people know who you are before they see the details. The list below runs through princesses, classic animated icons, heroes, villains and Pixar favorites, each worked out from the base garment to the hair, makeup, shoes and prop. Most of them can be built from closet pieces, thrift finds, felt, costume jewelry and basic craft supplies. As a sewist, I'd rather you nail the colors and wear something comfortable than copy every seam and spend the party tugging at it.

Attaching Felt and Trim So It Survives the Party
Almost every character below borrows its key detail from felt, ribbon or trim added to ordinary clothes: Mickey's buttons, Mirabel's butterflies, Sulley's spots, Jessie's yoke. How you attach those pieces decides whether they're still there at the end of the night.
- Hand stitching is the most reliable. A few tacks around the edge of a felt shape take minutes and hold through stretching, sitting and washing.
- Fabric glue works on woven cotton and denim, but it soaks through thin felt and stiffens it. Use a thin line near the edge rather than a big blob in the middle.
- Hot glue is the weakest choice on clothing. It lets go on stretch fabric and turns brittle when you step outside into cold air.
- Iron-on adhesive web is good for flat shapes on cotton. Check the fabric label first, because many costume polyesters and sheers melt at the temperature it needs.
- Safety pins are fine on capes and sashes, but always pin from the inside so the point faces away from skin.
If the costume will go back into your regular wardrobe, sew with long, loose stitches. They hold all night and snip out cleanly the next day.
1. Mickey Mouse Costume With Red Shorts

Mickey is the easiest build on this list, and the buttons are what sell it. Pair a fitted black long-sleeve top with bright red high-waisted shorts, then add two large white felt circles to the front. I stitch those circles on with a few tacks at the edge rather than gluing them, because glue soaks through thin felt and leaves a stiff, yellowed patch. Opaque black tights and yellow sneakers or slip-ons finish the base. A round mouse-ear headband is the piece that matters most, so tuck your hair behind it or wear a smooth black wig. Fresh skin, black eyeliner, a small black dot on the nose and white gloves keep the face and hands on palette. A yellow bow tie or small plush mouse is fun for photos.
2. Minnie Mouse Costume With Polka Dot Dress

A red-and-white polka dot dress does nearly all the work for Minnie. Choose a knee-length style with a fitted bodice and flared skirt, and add a black cardigan or long-sleeve layer under it when it's cold. Black tights and yellow heels, ballet flats or sneakers go underneath. Round mouse ears with a big red polka dot bow sit best over a low bun, which gives the headband something to grip. Winged liner, rosy cheeks, red lipstick and a tiny black nose suit her, along with white gloves and a small red bag. A lightweight tulle petticoat under the skirt gives the classic bounce, and it's the one piece I'd never skip.
3. Cinderella Costume With Blue Ball Gown

Cinderella starts with a pale blue full-length ball gown or a flowing blue maxi dress. If the skirt needs more volume, a tulle overskirt is the quickest fix; gather it onto wide elastic so it slips on over the dress. Silver ribbon or sheer fabric at the shoulders gives the delicate accent. Style blonde hair or a blonde wig in a smooth high bun with a light blue headband, and keep makeup to silver shimmer, soft pink lipstick and a little highlight. Wear silver flats, not costume slippers, so you can actually walk. White elbow gloves, a black velvet choker and crystal-style earrings finish it, and a clear acrylic shoe makes the photo prop, or a small rhinestone silver bag if you'd rather keep your hands free.
4. Belle Costume With Yellow Gown

Belle needs layers in the skirt or she looks like any yellow dress. Begin with a yellow or warm gold maxi with a fitted top, then pin gathered swags of sheer yellow fabric around the skirt to suggest the tiered gown. When I do this, I pin the swags from the inside so the pins don't scratch whoever you dance with. Yellow elbow gloves and gold ballet flats go on next. Brown hair or a chestnut wig in a half-up style with curled lengths, brown liner, peach blush and rose lipstick suit her. An artificial red rose under a clear plastic dome is the signature prop. Small gold earrings and a cropped gold cardigan for warmth are all you need beyond that.
5. Ariel Costume With Mermaid Skirt

A land-friendly Ariel uses a fitted purple top and a shimmering green mermaid skirt that flares below the knee. Stretch sequin fabric gives the scale effect and still lets you walk. Mermaid skirts restrict your stride more than people expect, so if a narrow one feels tight, switch to a green maxi with a sheer fin-shaped overlay. Wear red hair in loose waves or a long copper-red wig pinned in place. Lavender shadow, coral lipstick and highlighted cheeks keep the face bright. Skin-tone or green flats disappear into the costume, and a purple shell necklace with a stuffed fish or seashell purse finishes it. Keep the hem just above the floor, and add a fitted skin-tone top underneath if the night is cold.
6. Snow White Costume With Blue And Yellow Dress

Snow White is one of the easiest characters to spot across a room, because the blue, yellow and red blocking is so strong. Start with a royal blue fitted top and a calf-length yellow skirt. Puff sleeves in blue with small red ribbon inserts are the detail I'd spend time on, or you can wear a puff-sleeve blouse under a blue vest. A high white collar cut from stiff felt holds its stand-up shape better than fabric, which wilts by the end of the night. A short black bob wig with curled ends and a red bow headband finish the head. Defined brows, rosy cheeks, light liner and red lipstick suit her. Wear yellow or black flats, add a red cape on cool evenings, and carry a shiny artificial apple or a small woven basket.
7. Princess Aurora Costume With Pink Dress

Aurora works in any long blush or rose-pink dress with a fitted waist and full skirt. The off-the-shoulder neckline is what makes her read, and the easiest way to add it is a removable white or pale pink felt collar stitched to the dress straps. Soft golden curls or a long blonde wig, with the front swept back, sit under a small gold crown; an oversized tiara slides around and pulls on the wig. Pink shadow, glowing cheeks and rose lipstick keep it delicate. I'd wear pink or gold ballet flats instead of tall heels under a long skirt. Finish with a gold necklace and an artificial rose, a spindle-shaped craft prop or a small storybook bag.
8. Princess Jasmine Costume With Turquoise Pants

Jasmine's turquoise two-piece is simple to sew or buy: loose harem pants with a cropped or waist-length top, plus a matching fitted tank underneath for more coverage. Gold trim, rhinestones or fabric gems make plain pieces look richer. I'd sew the trim on with a zigzag rather than gluing it, because glued trim on chiffon peels as soon as the fabric moves. Long black hair or a black wig goes in a low bubble ponytail with two turquoise bands. Gold flats or jeweled sandals, gold hoops, a wide turquoise headband and a small jewel at the forehead finish the look. Bronzed makeup, defined liner and a soft berry lip suit her, and a gold lamp-shaped prop or small plush tiger makes the character clear.
9. Tiana Costume With Green Gown

Tiana's gown is all about the leaf shapes on the skirt. Start with a pale green maxi or formal gown, then layer darker green fabric panels cut like overlapping leaves around the skirt. Cut those leaves from a fabric that doesn't fray, such as felt or a tightly woven polyester, and you can skip hemming every edge. A light yellow or ivory tulle layer underneath adds fullness. Dark hair in a high bun with a green ribbon, leaf comb or small floral tiara, plus gold shadow, defined lashes, coral blush and berry lipstick, suits her. Green, gold or neutral flats go under the gown, and light green elbow gloves and a felt lily-pad clutch add the details. A tiny plush frog is the final prop.
10. Rapunzel Costume With Purple Lace-Up Dress

Rapunzel lives or dies on the hair. A lavender maxi dress with a fitted bodice works as the base, especially with pink ribbon laced down the front, and sheer lavender puff sleeves or a short-sleeve blouse underneath. The braid is where I'd put the effort: a braided wig or a removable braid extension, dotted with small artificial flowers. Long braids are heavy, so anchor the extension to a headband or pin it into your own hair at several points instead of one. Pink cheeks, lilac shadow and glossy rose lips, purple flats or tan shoes, a foam frying pan or plush chameleon, a flower crown and a small crossbody satchel round it out.
11. Moana Costume With Island-Inspired Skirt

Moana is a comfortable costume to wear, which is a big part of her appeal. Pair a red patterned bandeau-style top or fitted tank with a cream wrap skirt trimmed in tan fringe and printed geometric borders, and tie a red sash at the waist to join the pieces. Long dark hair in loose waves, or a textured wig, suits her, with bronzer, warm blush, brown mascara and a neutral lip. Wear flat brown sandals or barefoot-look shoes with real soles. A blue stone-style pendant on a cord is the key accessory, and a foam-board paddle or small woven bag is the prop. Stick to the character's fictional adventure outfit and leave out anything culturally sacred.
12. Elsa Costume With Ice Blue Cape

Elsa is mostly the cape. Pick a fitted ice-blue maxi with a modest slit, or an A-line skirt, so you can walk. A sheer floor-length cape decorated with silver snowflakes, glitter fabric paint or iron-on crystals goes over it. Iron-on crystals hold far better on a sheer cape than glue does, but test the iron on a scrap first, since some sheers melt at the heat crystals need. A thick platinum side braid with a few loose strands, silver-blue shadow, defined lashes, cool pink blush and berry lipstick finish her. Silver flats or pale blue ankle boots, snowflake earrings and a crystal hair clip, plus a snowflake wand or sheer gloves instead of a big prop. Hem the cape so it floats behind you instead of dragging.
13. Anna Costume With Black Embroidered Dress

Anna is the warmest princess on the list, which makes her my October choice. Start with a black sleeveless dress or vest painted or embroidered with florals, worn over a bright blue long-sleeve blouse and a full royal blue skirt. A magenta cape with dark trim keeps you warm outside. If you're painting the florals, fabric paint on a black base needs a white underlayer first or the colors sink in and look muddy. Auburn hair or a reddish-brown wig in two braids, with a lighter streak at the front if you like, plus freckles, rosy cheeks and a pink lip suit her. Black ankle boots, a decorative cape clasp, simple gloves and a plush snowman or sunflower satchel finish it.
14. Mirabel Costume With Embroidered Skirt

Mirabel is the one for anyone who'd rather wear separates than a gown. A white puff-sleeve blouse and a full turquoise or teal midi skirt are the base, covered with felt butterflies, flowers and birds and finished with colorful tassels at the hem. Felt appliqués are the right choice here because they don't fray, and a quick running stitch around each one outlasts any glue. Dark curly hair in a chin-length bob, or a short textured wig, suits her. Round green glasses with clear lenses are what people recognize first. Keep makeup minimal, wear espadrilles, embroidered flats or sandals, and clip a small yellow butterfly to your shoulder, bag or hair.
15. Mulan Costume With Green And Blue Robe

This Mulan look relies on layered robes rather than armor. A pale green or cream wrap top goes under a blue kimono-style robe, with a deep red sash at the waist and a long navy or burgundy skirt that lets you take full steps. Straight black hair in a low bun with a red ribbon, or worn loose, suits her, with smooth skin, precise liner, pink blush and muted red lipstick. Black slip-on flats or ankle boots, a floral hair comb and a blossom-painted folding fan finish it, and a small plush dragon can stand in for anything more complicated. Wrap layers loosen as you move, so I pin each one at the side seam with a hidden safety pin.
16. Merida Costume With Dark Green Dress

Merida needs two things: rich green fabric and a lot of curl. Choose a long dark green dress with full sleeves and a relaxed medieval shape, add gold ribbon at the neckline and cuffs, and lace the sleeves with cream cord. Lacing through ribbon loops is easier than punching eyelets if you're working with a bought dress. Naturally curly red hair or a long copper wig with defined ringlets, freckles, softly filled brows, peach blush and a neutral lip finish her. Dark brown lace-up boots with low heels handle outdoor ground. Skip the bow and arrows in favor of a round tartan satchel, plush bear or gold medallion, and drape a tartan cape over one shoulder for warmth.
17. Peter Pan Costume With Green Tunic

A green tunic is all Peter Pan really needs. Cut the hem of an oversized green T-shirt into soft points; jersey doesn't fray, so the raw points stay neat. Belt it in brown, add dark green leggings or slim pants and brown ankle boots. The pointed hat comes from green felt with a bright red craft feather on one side. Tousled auburn hair or a cropped reddish wig, lightly defined brows, a dusting of bronzer and a few freckles suit him. A small brown crossbody pouch carries your essentials. Even foam daggers break some event rules, so I'd carry a rolled treasure map or a fabric leaf instead.
18. Tinker Bell Costume With Green Fairy Dress

Tinker Bell's green dress needs that petal hem. Look for a fitted green mini or knee-length dress with petal shaping, or cut rounded points into an inexpensive green overskirt. Sheer white or pale green wings on comfortable elastic straps go on the back. Blonde hair or a blonde wig in a high bun with soft face-framing pieces, tied with a thin green ribbon, plus shimmery green shadow, rosy cheeks and glossy pink lips keep her light. Green ballet flats with fluffy white pom-poms are the detail people smile at. Carry a small gold star wand, and use body shimmer rather than loose craft glitter, which ends up on every guest. Thermal tights and a fitted cardigan help in cooler weather.
19. Alice Costume With Blue Apron Dress

Alice takes very little crafting. A knee-length pale blue dress with short puff sleeves and a white pinafore apron tied over it is the whole base, with white tights or knee socks and black Mary Janes. Blonde hair worn straight with curled ends, or a shoulder-length blonde wig, sits under a wide black ribbon headband. Pale pink blush, mascara and a soft rose lip keep it delicate. A small teacup, a pocket-watch accessory or a plush white rabbit is the prop. Pockets are the one thing I always add to a costume apron: two simple patch pockets sewn on in ten minutes hold a phone and keys. A blue cardigan keeps the colors right on a chilly school day.
20. Mary Poppins Costume With White Dress

Mary Poppins in her white garden-party outfit starts with a structured white midi dress. Add red ribbon stripes around the waist, sleeves and skirt; removable fabric tape works if you don't want to alter the dress, though stitched ribbon sits flatter. A wide white hat trimmed with red flowers and small faux berries is the statement piece. Dark hair in a neat low bun, softly defined eyes, rosy cheeks and cheerful red lipstick suit her. White lace-up or low-heeled ankle boots finish the outfit, and a white parasol or structured carpet-style bag works depending on how much room the venue has. White gloves add polish. Mid-calf is the right skirt length for walking.
21. Cruella De Vil Costume With Faux Fur Coat

Cruella is all contrast: black, white and red, with no real fur and no animal-print props. A sleek black midi dress, or tailored black pants with a fitted top, goes under an oversized white faux-fur coat. Faux fur sheds at the cut edges, so I give the coat a good shake outdoors and run a lint roller over the black underneath before leaving. Red gloves and matching pointed flats or ankle boots add the red. The split black-and-white wig with big waves is essential. Sharp winged liner, sculpted brows, pale foundation and vivid red lipstick, plus large costume earrings and a chunky necklace, finish the face. A long holder with a rolled paper prop or a structured red bag completes her, and posture does the rest.
22. Maleficent Costume With Black Horned Headpiece

Maleficent needs height and a long dark line. Choose a floor-length black gown with long sleeves and add a purple-lined cape that opens when you spread your arms. The curved horned headpiece should be light and held with elastic or hidden combs; heavy horns tip forward within an hour. Tuck your hair underneath so the shape stays smooth. Pale foundation, sharp cheek contour, arched brows, purple-gray shadow and deep berry lipstick suit her. Black platform flats or low block-heel boots go under the dress. A tall staff made from cardboard tubing topped with a translucent green ornament is light enough to carry all night, and a black statement ring with a raised wing collar finishes her.
23. Evil Queen Costume With Purple Cape

The Evil Queen needs purple, black, red and gold in the right places. A long purple dress or black gown with a fitted waist, a sweeping purple cape lined in red and a tall white collar made from layered felt or flexible craft foam form the silhouette. Craft foam holds a standing collar better than felt, though it needs a fabric cover so the edge doesn't rub your neck. A fitted black hood covers the hair, with a small gold crown on top. Sharp brows, plum shadow, contoured cheeks and deep red lipstick, black or gold flats, a wide gold pendant and a jewel ring finish her. Carry a plastic-framed hand mirror instead of glass, and a glossy artificial apple for photos.
24. Ursula Costume With Purple Tentacle Skirt

Ursula is a black dress with a purple tentacle overskirt. Pick a strapless-look or off-the-shoulder black dress, with a fitted black top under it for more coverage. Make several curved tentacles from stuffed purple tights or light fabric tubes and attach each one to a belt separately so they swing on their own. Stuff them loosely with polyester fiberfill; packed tight, they get heavy and pull the belt down. Short white upswept hair or a cropped white wig, lavender face accents, dramatic blue shadow, high arched brows and bright red lipstick suit her. Black ankle boots or purple flats, big shell earrings, a gold shell necklace and a small black clutch finish it. Keep every tentacle above the ankle.
25. Jack Skellington Costume With Pinstripe Suit

Jack Skellington starts with a fitted black pinstripe suit: matching trousers and blazer over a plain white shirt, with a felt bat-shaped bow tie and black dress shoes or polished lace-up boots. A plain black suit works too, since you can draw thin white pinstripes on it with removable fabric chalk. Slick your hair back and cover it with a smooth white cap, or use temporary white hair color for a less literal take. Apply white face makeup evenly, then add black shadow around the eyes and a simple stitched smile, keeping it friendly rather than frightening. White gloves stretch the long-limbed look. A small plush ghost dog or striped gift box is a playful prop.
26. Woody Costume With Cowboy Vest

Woody is one of the few costumes on this list that works equally for adults, teens and kids. A yellow plaid shirt and blue jeans, a black-and-white cow-print vest and a red bandana at the neck are the base, with a big brown belt buckle, brown boots and a tan cowboy hat. If you can't find a cow-print vest, I cut one from cow-print fleece, which doesn't need hemming. Natural brown hair or a short brown wig under the hat, warm blush, defined brows and optional freckles keep the face simple. Pin a gold felt sheriff badge on securely, and carry a soft rope loop, plush horse or small pull-string-style backpack. Stretch denim helps for a long evening.
27. Jessie Costume With Cow Print Chaps

Jessie is bright and easy to spot. Start with a white long-sleeve shirt and add yellow fabric across the shoulders and cuffs, then pair it with blue jeans and removable cow-print chaps in lightweight fabric. I'd make the chaps from a single layer of soft fabric with ties at the belt and thigh, since stiff vinyl chaps squeak and make sitting awkward. A wide brown belt with a decorative buckle defines the waist. One long red braid tied with a yellow bow, a red cowgirl hat held on with discreet elastic, pink blush, mascara and a rosy lip finish her. Brown western boots, a gold felt badge and a small plush horse or toy-style backpack complete the character.
28. Buzz Lightyear Costume With Space Ranger Suit

Buzz Lightyear builds around a white long-sleeve top and fitted white pants or joggers. Add green chest panels, purple accents and colorful control-button shapes in felt or removable fabric tape. A padded foam chest piece gives a stronger space-suit shape without much weight, and a purple fitted hood keeps hair tucked in while leaving the face fully visible. Silver shadow, clean liner and a cool pink lip, or a bare face for kids, suits him, with white high-tops trimmed in green. Collapsible foam-board wings mounted on a small backpack harness are the showpiece. I'd skip a clear dome helmet, since they fog and muffle sound; a clear visor headband or purple ear covers are far easier.
29. Mike Wazowski Costume With Green Tutu

Mike Wazowski is a cheerful costume and quick to make. A lime green T-shirt or sweatshirt with matching leggings, joggers or shorts is the base, with one oversized felt eye in white, blue and black on the front. Layer the eye from largest circle to smallest and stitch around each edge, so it stays flat when the shirt stretches. A green tutu makes a party version; plain pants keep it simple. Two small gray horns on a padded headband, or a green beanie for more coverage, go on top. Green shadow, rosy cheeks and a thin blue liner accent, green sneakers and white gloves finish it. A small blue clipboard or door-shaped bag is the prop.
30. Sulley Costume With Blue Spotted Fur

Sulley is the cozy one. Start with a turquoise faux-fur jacket, fleece hoodie or fuzzy one-piece, with matching blue pants and blue sneakers. Cut irregular purple felt spots and attach them across the top, sleeves and legs; on fur, push the pile aside with your fingers before you glue or stitch, or the spot sits on top and pops off. Small beige horns and rounded ears go on a blue headband or hood, with your hair tucked away. Soft blue and lavender eye makeup and highlighted cheeks work better than full face paint. Blue gloves with felt claws finish the big shape, and a small hard hat or a plush one-eyed friend is the prop. Faux fur is hot indoors, so choose breathable layers underneath.
Character Wigs That Behave Under a Crown or Hood
Hair carries a lot of these characters: Elsa's platinum braid, Ariel's red waves, Cruella's split color, Rapunzel's length. A cheap synthetic wig can do the job, but it needs a little preparation.
Shake a new wig out and brush it gently with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb before the first wear, because loose fibers shed most at the start. A wig cap underneath keeps your own hair flat and gives pins something to hold. Crowns, tiaras and horn headpieces sit more securely when you slide a bobby pin through the wig and cap at each side of the headband. Keep synthetic wigs away from curling irons, ovens and candles; unless the label says heat-resistant, the fiber frizzes or melts.
White and Pale Face Makeup Without a Ruined Collar
Jack Skellington, Cruella and Maleficent all call for pale or white skin, and white cream makeup is the hardest kind to keep off clothing. Patch-test any face paint on the inside of your wrist a day ahead. Apply it in thin layers with a damp sponge, then press translucent setting powder over it and brush off the excess; that step is what stops it smearing onto a white shirt collar or a black suit. Leave a small bare gap at the jaw and neck, or tuck a tissue into the collar while you dress.
At the end of the night, take it off with an oil cleanser or makeup remover before washing with soap and water. White pigment clings around the hairline and eyebrows, so go over those areas twice.
Get the Colors Right and the Character Follows
Princesses, heroes, villains and classic animated icons all come down to the same three things: a strong color palette, a clear silhouette and one or two accessories people recognize. You don't need a costly ready-made outfit. Dresses, shirts, skirts, suits, wigs, felt details, comfortable shoes and light props can turn everyday clothes into a full character. Adjust skirt lengths, layers, makeup and footwear for the wearer, the weather and the venue, and make sure every piece is secure enough to move in.
