Three people dressing as a set should be fun, and it gets a lot easier once you stop thinking of it as three costumes. I treat a trio as one idea split three ways: a shared colour rule or theme, then one or two details that tell each person apart. Every look below is built from everyday clothes, thrift-store basics and simple craft supplies, with the shirt, shoes, hair, makeup and props spelled out so nobody in the group chat has to guess. There are cartoon characters, food jokes, classic monsters and a few clever concepts. Most adapt easily to any age, gender or body type, and plenty can be pulled together the night before.

Splitting One Idea Fairly Between Three Friends
The trio costumes that fall apart are usually the ones where one person did all the work and the other two showed up in whatever they had. I've learned to sort that out before anyone buys anything. A quick message in the group chat saves a lot of last-minute stress.
- Agree on the one thing everyone will match. Usually that's the base colour, the fabric type or the shoes. One constant is enough to make three outfits read as a set.
- Give each person one signature detail, like a bow, a hat, glasses or a letter. That detail is what people will recognise from across a room.
- Balance the effort. If one role needs a cardboard panel and another only needs a hoodie, swap the craft jobs so the hoodie person makes the shared prop.
- Check comfort early. Ask who hates wigs, face paint or anything on the head, and give that person the role with the fewest of those.
- Do a photo test a few days before. Stand side by side and take one shot on a phone; colours that look close in a closet often clash in a picture.
Mixed heights and builds are fine, and they help for themes like traffic lights or s'mores, where the order matters. Put the tallest person where the eye should land first.
1. Powerpuff Girls Trio Costume

Three dresses in pink, blue and green, and you've got the Powerpuff Girls. Add a wide black belt or ribbon at each waist, white knee socks and black flats or sneakers. The hair carries the character: Blossom gets the big red bow, Bubbles wears blonde pigtails and Buttercup a short black wig or a tucked-under style. I'd make Blossom's bow first and make it bigger than feels sensible, because a small bow disappears in photos. Rosy cheeks and liner in each signature colour finish the face. For an easy, gender-inclusive version, swap the dresses for knit dresses or oversized tees.
2. Three Blind Mice Trio Costume

This one needs very little shopping. Everyone wears gray tops with gray jeans, leggings, skirts or sweatpants, then felt mouse ears on cheap headbands. A pink paper nose, drawn-on whiskers and a thin gray fabric tail finish each mouse. Pin tails on the inside of the waistband, not the outside, or they'll be pulled off in the first doorway. Dark sunglasses deliver the joke. Cardboard-tube canes are fun, but I'd skip them in crowded rooms. Gray sneakers, flats or boots. Pull the hair back so the ears show, and you're done in an afternoon.
3. Rock Paper Scissors Trio Costume

Want a costume people get in a second? Make one friend rock, one paper and one scissors. Rock wears gray with gray sneakers, tousled hair and a light cardboard rock shape worn as a sandwich board. Paper wears all white with a poster-board panel lined like notebook paper, plus a red margin and a paper headband. Scissors goes gray or silver with two big cardboard handles across the torso, metallic eye makeup and silver shoes. Round off every corner of the cardboard; sharp points jab whoever is standing next to you. Pose as if mid-game.
4. Traffic Light Trio Costume

Red, yellow and green, head to toe, and three friends become a traffic light. Each person wears one colour: top, bottoms, socks and comfortable shoes. Cut a large circle from matching poster board and pin it to the front of each shirt. Black jackets or black sandwich boards build the frame. Sleek hair or matching caps, and a little coloured liner or a few face gems to repeat each shade. A cardboard stop sign and a go arrow make fun props. The order matters, so I'd tell everyone where to stand before the first photo: red on top, or red on the left if you're in a line. Add reflective tape for trick-or-treating.
5. S’mores Trio Costume

Marshmallow, chocolate and graham cracker: a sweet trio that's easy to make at home. The marshmallow wears white sweatpants, a white sweatshirt, white sneakers and a soft cylinder hat sewn or glued from white felt. Chocolate dresses in brown with a cardboard panel scored into squares. The graham cracker wears tan with a foam-board rectangle, dotted with holes and a centre line. Foam board is lighter than cardboard and won't sag, which matters for the person wearing it all night. Warm, natural makeup. The joke lands best when the three of you stand in stacked order.
6. Ketchup Mustard And Relish Trio Costume

Cookout humour makes a great trio. Red for ketchup, bright yellow for mustard and green for relish, with matching tees and leggings, jeans or joggers. Add white felt labels across the shirts with the condiment names. Bottle-cap hats from painted paper bowls glued to headbands are the detail people notice. Paper bowls get soggy if they're painted too wet, so I do two thin coats with drying time in between. Coloured sneakers or socks carry the colour to the feet. High ponytails under the caps and matching liner. A cardboard hot dog makes a funny shared prop.
7. Neapolitan Ice Cream Trio Costume

Neapolitan ice cream gives each person a separate colour inside one clear theme: pink for strawberry, cream or white for vanilla, rich brown for chocolate. Dresses, sweatsuits or coordinated separates all work, depending on the weather. Sprinkle collars cut from white felt with colourful foam bits glued on are the cute part. Glue the sprinkles with fabric glue rather than hot glue; hot glue peels off felt when it flexes. Small cone-shaped party hats finish each scoop. Ponytails, buns or soft curls, pink blush and pearly highlighter. Big cardboard spoons make a great group-photo prop.
8. Alvin And The Chipmunks Trio Costume

If your group wants characters made from casual clothes, the Chipmunks are hard to beat. Alvin wears a red sweatshirt or oversized hoodie with a big yellow A and a red cap. Simon needs a blue sweatshirt, round glasses and neat hair. Theodore gets a green hoodie and matching cap. Brown pants, tan joggers or jeans underneath suggest chipmunk colouring, with brown sneakers and small felt ears. I cut the A from felt and stitch around the edge, because iron-on letters peel off fleece. A brown nose dot and a few short whiskers are plenty. Toy microphones suit the singing trio, and the hoodies keep everyone warm outside.
9. Toy Story Alien Trio Costume

Three little green aliens are cute, matching and simple. Everyone starts with a royal-blue shirt or jumpsuit, blue pants and matching sneakers, with a bright green long-sleeve layer underneath for green arms. The three-eyed headband is the key: green felt, foam circles for eyes and a plain band. Foam eyes stay on better if you glue them to a felt backing first. Purple collars or belts bring in the second colour. Light green face makeup around the forehead and cheeks, plus purple liner. A cardboard claw on a silver-painted tube makes a great group prop, as long as it stays small.
10. Minions Trio Costume

Minions come almost straight out of the closet. Denim overalls over a bright yellow long-sleeve shirt, black gloves and sturdy black shoes. Yellow beanies keep the colour consistent and hold the goggles in place. Goggles are silver-painted jar rings, cardboard circles or craft foam on an elastic strap; one friend can wear a single lens for variety. Craft foam is the most comfortable of the three, because it bends with your face and doesn't press on the nose. Simple black liner around the eyes. Plush bananas are light, obvious props. Overalls, shorts or skirts all work, so everyone can pick their own shape.
11. Mario Luigi And Waluigi Trio Costume

Mario, Luigi and Waluigi give you three clear colours from the closet. Red shirt for Mario, green for Luigi, purple for Waluigi. Mario and Luigi wear denim overalls; Waluigi wears black overalls or dark pants with suspenders. Each gets a matching cap with a handmade initial; Waluigi's is an upside-down L, which is a fun detail. White gloves and brown or black boots. Stick-on mustaches lose grip on a warm face, so I'd draw them on with a brow pencil and set them with powder. Hair goes under the caps. A few foam stars make light props.
12. Scooby Shaggy And Velma Trio Costume

Scooby, Shaggy and Velma are three very different outfits, and only one person has to wear animal ears, which helps when friends have different comfort levels. Scooby wears a brown hoodie and pants, felt ears, a tail and a blue collar, with a black nose and a few brown spots in removable felt. Shaggy needs a loose green tee, brown pants, sneakers and messy hair. Velma wears an orange turtleneck, red pleated skirt, orange knee socks, red shoes, square glasses and a short brown bob wig. Cheap bob wigs shed, so give it a gentle shake outside first. A cardboard magnifying glass makes a good shared prop.
13. Ghostbusters Trio Costume

Matching jumpsuits make Ghostbusters one of the most practical trios for a long, cold night. Tan utility jumpsuits, or khaki shirts with cargo pants for a thrift version. Black boots, dark belts and printed name patches on removable tape. Natural hair or ponytails, with a little gray shadow for a dusty look. The packs are black backpacks with recycled boxes, coloured tubing and bottle caps glued on. I build them on a backpack you're happy to keep as a costume piece; glue doesn't come off cleanly. Keep the hand pieces soft and obviously toy-like. A small smiling sheet ghost is a fun extra.
14. Dorothy Scarecrow And Tin Man Trio Costume

Dorothy, the Scarecrow and the Tin Man give you a colourful storybook group. Dorothy wears a blue gingham dress over a white blouse, braided pigtails, red flats and a basket with a plush dog. The Scarecrow wears a plaid shirt, patched brown pants, a rope belt, a floppy hat and brown boots, with raffia poking out at the cuffs. Raffia sheds everywhere, so tie it into small bundles with thread before tucking it in. The Tin Man wears silver clothing and sneakers, a funnel hat and light metallic makeup, with a cardboard heart on the chest. No sewing needed.
15. Sanderson Sisters Trio Costume

The Sanderson Sisters are dramatic but easy to keep family-friendly. Winifred wears a green dress or long skirt, a purple cape, striped tights and a curled red wig styled up. Sarah chooses a dusty pink or burgundy dress, wavy blonde hair and soft plum eyes. Mary wears layered orange and red with a dark apron and a black wig swept into her signature side shape. Boots for everyone. A curled-up wig like Winifred's needs a firm hairspray and a few bobby pins through the wig cap, or it flattens by midnight. Small brooms and potion bottles stuffed with coloured paper are safe props. Thrifted maxi skirts and velvet tops build the layers cheaply.
16. Mean Girls Pink Trio Costume

Mean Girls is the trio for friends who want something closer to a real outfit. I'd build three different early-2000s pink looks rather than three identical ones. One wears a pink cardigan, a plaid mini, knee socks and loafers. The second chooses a fitted pink top, black skirt, shoulder bag and ankle boots. The third wears a pink velour tracksuit or a pink sweater with jeans. Smooth blowouts, glossy lips and rosy blush. The trick is getting all three pinks in the same family; hold the pieces next to each other in daylight, since a cool pink and a warm pink look mismatched in photos.
17. Totally Spies Trio Costume

Totally Spies is clean and colour-coded with almost no accessories. In the show, Sam wears green, Clover red and Alex yellow, so I'd match the colours to the hair: Sam with long red hair, Clover with a blonde bob and Alex with short dark hair. Jumpsuits, leggings with fitted tops or monochrome tracksuits all work, with sneakers or ankle boots. If wigs are a hassle, coloured headbands do the job. Soft metallic shadow, defined liner and glossy lips. Wide silver belts and toy compacts are the props. Skip anything gadget-like that could be mistaken for a weapon at a public event.
18. Winnie The Pooh Tigger And Piglet Trio Costume

Pooh, Tigger and Piglet bring cheerful colours and lots of warmth. Pooh wears yellow pants, a red tee, yellow shoes, round bear ears and a cardboard honey pot. Tigger wears orange with black felt stripes, a striped tail, ears and orange sneakers. Piglet gets a pink top, darker pink bottoms, pointed ears and a few stripes. Felt stripes stay flat on fleece if you stitch them at each end; glue alone tends to bubble. Black nose dots, rosy cheeks and subtle whiskers are enough makeup. Fleece separates make it a strong pick for a cold night, and it suits mixed-age family groups.
19. Cat In The Hat And Things Trio Costume

The Cat in the Hat with Thing 1 and Thing 2 is easy to adapt. The Cat wears black pants, a black top, white gloves, black shoes and a tall red-and-white striped hat, with a white felt chest patch, ears, whiskers and a long tail. A tall hat wobbles, so I stuff the base of the crown with tissue and add a thin elastic under the hair. The Things wear red shirts or jumpsuits with big white circles labelled Thing 1 and Thing 2. Bright blue wigs are the most recognisable, but blue beanies with fluffy yarn work too. Red sneakers. Keep props small for trick-or-treat routes.
20. Sun Moon And Star Trio Costume

Not every trio needs characters. A sun, a moon and a star make a dreamy set. The sun wears yellow or gold with metallic shoes, warm gold makeup and a headband of craft-foam rays. The moon chooses silver, white or pale blue with a crescent headpiece and pearly highlighter. The star wears navy or black with gold star appliqués, glittery shadow and gold shoes. Glitter migrates to everyone you hug, so I'd use a cream shimmer instead and keep the glitter on the clothing. Short capes add movement. Dresses, suits, jumpsuits or sweat sets all work.
21. Bee Flower And Gardener Trio Costume

A bee, a flower and a gardener tell one story with three silhouettes. The bee wears a black-and-yellow striped top, black bottoms, antennae, sheer wings and black sneakers. The flower wears green with a petal collar or flower headband. The gardener wears denim overalls, a plaid shirt, work boots, gloves and a wide-brim hat. An empty watering can or a basket of fake flowers is a safe shared prop. I cut petals from soft felt rather than foam, because foam petals poke the chin when you turn your head. Most of the pieces go back into the wardrobe afterward.
22. Sun Cloud And Rainbow Trio Costume

Turn the weather forecast into a three-person costume. The sun wears bright yellow with a foam-ray headband, yellow sneakers and golden eye makeup. The cloud dresses in white, pale gray or silver with soft cotton clusters on a sweatshirt or vest. The rainbow wears stripes, either a striped dress or sweater, or rows of ribbon on a blue base. Cotton wool sheds and goes flat in the rain, so for an outdoor night I'd use polyester fibrefill, which springs back. A cardboard weather chart is a fun photo prop. Fix every decoration firmly, and keep ribbons away from the feet.
23. Red Blue And Yellow Crayon Trio Costume

Crayons are about the cheapest trio there is, since each person needs just one strong colour. Red, blue and yellow: a matching tee with pants, a skirt, leggings or a dress. Add black felt waves near the collar and hem to copy the wrapper. Cone hats from coloured poster board, held on with soft elastic. Measure the elastic on the actual head; too tight and it cuts under the chin within an hour. Matching socks and sneakers make it monochrome. Coloured liner and blush in the same shade. Plain labels saying crayon work better than copying a brand, especially at school.
24. Colorful Candy Trio Costume

Three coloured sweets are a simple matching set. Pick red, yellow and green and dress each person head to toe in one colour. Put a big white circle on the front of each plain shirt, with a single felt letter inside. Matching skirts, joggers, shorts or jeans depending on the weather. White gloves and white sneakers tie the three together. Round hats or berets in each shade. A clear treat bag filled with tissue-paper candies makes a light prop. I'd use your own letter rather than a brand logo so the theme stays generic and school-friendly.
25. Pac-Man Ghost Trio Costume

Arcade ghosts are easy because they share one shape and differ only in colour. Choose red, pink and blue oversized tees, tunics or ponchos. Cut a scalloped edge from separate felt panels and attach them at the hem, so the base clothes stay intact. Big white-and-black felt eyes go on the front. Here's a detail fans notice: the pupils on these ghosts all look in the same direction, so glue them to match. Leggings or pants in each colour, white or matching sneakers, and bright wigs, beanies or caps. A yellow circle with a triangle cut out is the shared prop. Walk in a line for photos.
26. Vampire Mummy And Frankenstein Trio Costume

A vampire, a mummy and Frankenstein's monster make a classic monster trio with no gore. The vampire wears black pants, a white shirt, a dark vest, a red-lined cape, slicked-back hair, pale makeup and black boots. The mummy dresses in cream or beige with loosely wrapped strips pinned well clear of the feet. The monster wears a dark jacket, black pants, chunky boots and light green makeup, with a flat-top style or a black foam headpiece. Green cream makeup transfers onto collars, so I set it with translucent powder and keep a dark collar under the jacket. The different textures help each one stand out.
27. Detective Suspect And Clue Trio Costume

A detective, a suspect and a walking clue make an interactive trio. The detective wears a trench coat, plaid pants, loafers and a brimmed hat, carrying a cardboard magnifying glass and a notebook. The suspect wears dark clothes, boots, sunglasses and a removable paper tag reading Suspect, styled for laughs rather than menace. The clue wears one colour covered in felt question marks, arrows or fingerprints, with a question-mark headband. Trench coats are warm, so whoever's the detective gets the best deal on a cold night. Pose with the detective peering at the clue while the suspect looks shocked.
28. Tourist Trio Costume

Three overprepared tourists are a great last-minute trio. Bright printed shirts with khaki shorts, cargo pants or skirts, sun hats, tall socks, walking sneakers, sunglasses and belt bags. Cardboard or real cameras hang from the neck, with folded maps, brochures and empty water bottles. A white zinc stripe on the nose, done with skin-safe face paint, gets a laugh. Give each tourist a different colour palette; three identical prints look like a uniform, not a holiday. Practical hair under visors. The photo to take is all three reading one map from different sides.
29. Lifeguard Trio Costume

A lifeguard trio is sporty and recognisable without anyone wearing swimwear. Red tees or sweatshirts with white lifeguard lettering, red shorts over leggings, red joggers or white track pants. White sneakers, crew socks, caps and sunglasses. I cut the lettering from white felt or use fabric paint; paint is flatter, but it needs a full day to dry, so start early. Practical ponytails or braids, sun-kissed makeup and waterproof mascara. A foam float or a red cardboard one on a white strap is the prop. Whistles are fun outside; inside, leave them silent. Sweatshirts make it easy to layer.
30. Emoji Face Trio Costume

Emoji faces are the easiest trio to coordinate, because the base outfits are nearly identical. Everyone wears a yellow shirt, yellow hoodie or round yellow board over black pants and black sneakers. Pick three expressions, say heart eyes, laughing and sunglasses. Cut the features from felt and attach them firmly to the shirts or boards. Yellow beanies help the round-face effect. Heart glasses, big black sunglasses and blue felt tears tell the three apart. Keep the real face uncovered so everyone can see. If you're short on time, this is the one I'd pick.
Cardboard Panels Versus Foam Board in a Crowd
A lot of these trios use a panel on the chest or a sandwich board. They're cheap and they make the joke obvious, but they're also the part that fails. Here's what I'd keep in mind.
Pick the material for where you're going
- Corrugated cardboard is free and sturdy, but it softens and bends in rain or drizzle. Paint both sides to slow that down.
- Foam board is lighter and stays flat, which makes it easier to wear for hours. It dents easily, so carry it in the car rather than a bag.
- Felt sewn or glued onto a plain shirt is the most comfortable choice of all, and the right call for anyone who'll be sitting in a car or at a table.
Make it wearable
Keep boards no wider than your shoulders, or you'll be turning sideways through every door. Use wide ribbon or cotton webbing for the shoulder straps, since string cuts in within an hour. Round the corners with scissors, and stick a strip of reflective tape on the front and back if you're trick-or-treating after dark. Finally, try sitting down in it. If you can't, plan to take it off at the party and put it back on for photos.
One Colour Rule, Three Different People
A trio doesn't need perfect replicas or heavy sewing. It needs a clear theme, colours that work together and a few details that tell each person apart. Before your group settles on one, talk through the weather, how far you'll walk, any venue rules and who's happy carrying a prop. Use soft craft materials, comfortable shoes and decorations that come off. Let each person choose their own silhouette within the shared colours. If I had to pick one to start with, it would be the traffic light for speed or the Ghostbusters for a cold night out.
