Bikini Bottom is a gift for costumes because every character is drawn in two or three flat colours, and flat colour is easy to dress. SpongeBob himself is only the start; Patrick, Sandy, Squidward, Plankton, Gary, Pearl, Mr. Krabs and a long tail of side characters all translate into clothes. Below are thirty I'd style for women, built mostly from dresses, separates, wigs, simple makeup and light homemade props. Some stay close to the cartoon, others turn the character into a preppy or dressy outfit. Each one runs from hair to shoes and can be adjusted for coverage, size and what you want to spend.

Turning a Group of Friends Into Bikini Bottom
SpongeBob costumes are at their best in a group, because each character makes the others easier to read. One woman in yellow is a yellow outfit; yellow next to pink and teal is SpongeBob, Patrick and Squidward. When I plan a group from this list, I start with the trio everyone knows and add from there.
- Two people: SpongeBob and Patrick, or Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. Both pairs are built on colours that clash on purpose.
- Three: add Squidward. His brown and teal sit between the yellow and pink and calm the group down in photos.
- Four or five: the Krusty Krab staff, with Mr. Krabs, a Krusty Krab SpongeBob, Squidward and Plankton with Karen as the rivals across the street.
- A bigger crowd: give the extra people Sandy, Pearl, Mrs. Puff or Gary, then send one person as the Flying Dutchman or King Neptune for scale.
Agree on a level of effort before anyone buys anything. A group where one person built Sandy's helmet and the rest wore T-shirts looks unbalanced. Match the wig rule too: either everyone wears coloured wigs or nobody does.
1. Classic SpongeBob Costume Dress

The classic version starts with a yellow sleeveless dress or an oversized yellow T-shirt dress. His uniform sits on top: a white collar, a red tie, a brown skirt panel and a black belt. The striped socks matter more than people think; white knee socks with a red and a blue stripe tell everyone who you are before they see your face. Yellow tights underneath, black lace-ups or Mary Janes, and high pigtails with yellow bows or a short yellow bob wig. Blue eye makeup, rosy cheeks and two small sponge holes drawn near one temple. A spatula and a light burger prop finish it.
2. Preppy SpongeBob Costume

If you'd rather wear an outfit than a costume, this is the one. A fitted yellow sweater vest over a crisp white shirt, tailored brown shorts, a narrow red tie, a black belt, the striped knee socks and chunky black loafers. It covers more than the dress version, so I suggest it for school and office days. A smooth ponytail with a yellow ribbon, bright blue liner and a few softly shaded brown spots at the forehead. A yellow bag with removable felt circles, and square-framed glasses if you want a bookish twist.
3. Krusty Krab SpongeBob Costume

The Krusty Krab uniform is the practical choice if you'll be on your feet all night. A yellow fitted top under a white short-sleeved shirt, a brown pleated skirt and the red tie, with the paper or fabric restaurant hat and its blue anchor. Black non-slip sneakers rather than costume shoes. Hair in a neat bun under the hat; a hat elastic pinned through the bun keeps it from tipping back. Blue mascara, rosy blush and a few yellow face gems. A light serving tray with a burger prop and an order pad, plus a red waist apron for pockets, and you're ready to join friends as the rest of the staff.
4. Jellyfishing SpongeBob Costume

Jellyfishing SpongeBob is the daytime, outdoor version. A yellow polo, brown utility shorts, a white collar and the red tie, with striped knee socks over yellow tights and lace-up sneakers or light hiking shoes. A yellow bucket hat keeps sun off. Two low braids tied with yellow ribbon, blue liner, pink blush and scattered brown sponge dots. The net is the essential prop. Use a collapsible toy net rather than one with a wooden handle, and tie pink ribbon and a few small felt jellyfish to it. A crossbody satchel carries the rest.
5. Goofy Goober SpongeBob Costume

The Goofy Goober rock look is all about the stage costume from the movie. Keep the yellow top, brown shorts, white collar and red tie, then throw a shiny purple cape over it with a purple wizard hat covered in silver stars. Shiny cape fabric frays badly, so I'd hem it or seal the cut edge with a fray stopper before wearing. Yellow tights, striped socks and stable platform sneakers for dancing. A short textured yellow wig, blue shimmer on the eyes, pink blush and tiny silver stars on the cheeks. A foam-board or inflatable guitar, metallic cuffs and a toy microphone.
6. Mocking SpongeBob Meme Costume

Mocking SpongeBob is a meme, so the costume lives or dies on posture. A yellow tunic with brown shorts, a white shirt panel and a deliberately crooked tie. One striped sock pulled right up, the other scrunched at the ankle, and black lace-ups. Tease a short yellow wig toward one side or tie two mismatched pigtails. Blue liner, one brow raised higher than the other and uneven blush. Soft foam triangles on the sleeves suggest his bent arms. Practise the pose, knee turned in and hands up, because that's what people will ask you to do all night.
7. DoodleBob Costume

DoodleBob is the easy black-and-white alternative to all that yellow. A white long-sleeve shift dress outlined in thick black fabric tape at the collar, waist, sleeves and hem, white tights with rough black sketch marks and white sneakers edged in removable tape. A white bob wig, or white hair spray with hair-safe black lines drawn through. Natural skin, bold black liner and mismatched brows. A big pencil made from a painted cardboard mailing tube with rounded ends. Shaky lines are the point here; a neat outline looks wrong.
8. SpongeGar Costume

SpongeGar is the caveman episode, and faux fur is the main material. A loose yellow faux-fur tunic cut into a jagged one-shoulder shape over brown shorts, with a fitted yellow T-shirt underneath for coverage. Cut fur from the back with a craft knife, through the backing only, so the pile isn't sheared and the edge stays soft. Yellow leggings, brown faux-fur boot covers over flat ankle boots and a messy yellow wig. Warm brown sponge markings, thick brows, a foam jellyfish or stone-look cooking tool instead of a club, and a chunky faux-bone necklace.
9. Classic Patrick Star Costume

Patrick is pink with lime-green shorts covered in purple flowers, and that's almost all he needs. A pink long-sleeve bodysuit or a pink top and leggings, with the green shorts over the top and big purple felt flowers stuck on with removable fabric adhesive. Pink gloves and pink sneakers or soft ankle boots carry the colour to your hands and feet. A short pink wig styled up into a point, or your own hair in a high cone bun with temporary pink colour. Rosy pink makeup, lavender shadow and lazy curved brows. A grey zip bag makes a wearable rock purse, and the stretchy base and loose shorts suit most bodies.
10. Patrick Under His Rock Costume

Patrick under his rock is a nice twist on the basic look. A pink sweater dress, or pink top and leggings, under a light grey cape cut in a rounded rock shape, with the green flowered shorts still showing when the cape opens. Line the cape in purple to suggest the cosy space underneath. I'd stiffen just the top edge of the cape with a strip of interfacing so the rock shape holds at the shoulders. Pink slip-ons and gloves, a softly pointed pink wig, lavender liner and sleepy brows. A small pillow, an alarm clock or a snack-shaped purse.
11. Classic Squidward Costume

Squidward is surprisingly easy to make look polished. A fitted brown polo dress with opaque turquoise tights and turquoise elbow gloves, then brown loafers or turquoise flats. His head is the hard part: a smooth turquoise bald cap, a close hood or a sleek low bun with temporary turquoise colour. Teal makeup at the forehead blends you into the cap, heavy burgundy lids and sharply arched brows give his unimpressed look. A foam or painted cardboard clarinet and a brown crossbody. It's a clean silhouette and comfortable to wear.
12. Handsome Squidward Costume

Handsome Squidward is a makeup costume first. The clothes are simple, a fitted brown midi dress or brown mock-neck with a matching skirt, turquoise tights, teal gloves and pointed flats, plus a smooth turquoise head covering or slicked teal wig. Then the face: contour a hard jaw and big cheekbones, highlight a long nose and add heavy burgundy lids and sculpted brows. Contour reads much stronger in photos than in a mirror, so check yourself on a phone camera as you go. Skip prosthetics. A foam clarinet or a small framed self-portrait, and stand very upright.
13. Sandy Cheeks Air Suit Costume

Sandy's air suit is the most involved build on this list. A white astronaut-style jumpsuit with pink, blue and yellow felt rings at the cuffs, grey flat boots, white gloves, squirrel ears and a big brown faux-fur tail. The helmet is the bit to think about. A clear dome fogs up within minutes if it's sealed, so it needs open space at the neck for air, and you need to be able to see out of it clearly. A pink flower on top. Braids or a low bun under the helmet, soft brown eyes, a black nose and whisker dots. An acorn-shaped bag holds your things.
14. Sandy Cheeks Cowgirl Costume

Sandy as a cowgirl is the version I'd pick for a warm room, since there's no helmet. A brown suede-look dress, or a tan Western shirt with a knee-length skirt, a white cowgirl hat with a pink flower, brown squirrel ears and a fluffy tail. Sew the tail to a belt rather than pinning it to the skirt; tails get grabbed and sat on. Comfortable brown cowboy boots and white gloves with coloured cuff rings. Two braids with pink ribbons, warm neutral makeup, a small black nose and whisker dots. An acorn purse, a toy science notebook or a soft braided-cord lasso.
15. Mr. Krabs Costume

Mr. Krabs is nautical workwear with red hands and red eyes on stalks. A light-blue collared shirt tucked into high-waisted purple trousers, a black belt and black ankle boots. Red gloves with rounded foam claw covers, and a red beanie or smooth red wig to connect head and hands. Use red face makeup lightly, at the temples and cheeks only, and put tall eye stalks on a comfortable headband; stalks on a thin hard band give most people a headache within the hour. He's all about money, so a cash-register bag or coin purse is the obvious prop. A navy blazer adds warmth.
16. Pearl Krabs Cheerleader Costume

Pearl's look becomes a cheerleader outfit without much effort. A fitted pink T-shirt with a big purple P, a pink pleated skirt over opaque white tights and white sneakers with pink laces. Her tall blonde ponytail is the giveaway; clip a long ponytail piece to a white headband so it stands up rather than hanging down your back. Small grey felt ear fins. Pale grey face makeup is optional; silver shadow and pink lipstick suggest her well enough. Pink and purple pom-poms or a heart purse, and a lightly padded white waist belt hints at her whale shape without stopping you sitting down.
17. Mrs. Puff Boating Teacher Costume

Mrs. Puff's boating-school uniform is modest and a little vintage. A cobalt-blue blouse with a rounded collar, a knee-length red pleated skirt, turquoise tights and bright red Mary Janes. A tiny blue sailor hat on a short orange wig styled into a neat round shape. To suggest a pufferfish, add soft beige panels down the sides of the blouse or wear a lightly padded round vest; anything properly inflated gets stuck in doorways. Coral lipstick, blue shadow and small dots at the cheeks. A toy steering wheel or a clipboard with a handmade driving test, and a structured blue bag.
18. Plankton Costume

Plankton is a sleek green outfit with one big eye. A lime-green jumpsuit or fitted green dress with matching tights, black platform boots and long green gloves. A tall green wig, or two flexible antennae on a padded headband. The eye is the centre of it: a large felt eye in yellow with a red iris, stitched to the middle of the bodice, or one-eye makeup with yellow shadow round a single eye and the other side left plain. A small recipe bottle, a lab notebook or a bucket-shaped bag points to his endless schemes to steal the secret formula.
19. Karen Computer Costume

Karen, Plankton's computer wife, makes a fun retro-tech costume. A metallic grey shift dress or silver jumpsuit with coloured felt buttons, horizontal vent lines and a bright green screen panel on the front. Draw a simple pixel face on the screen with washable fabric markers. Silver tights and white platform sneakers, a sleek silver bob or high ponytail with chrome clips, cool makeup, sharp liner and a silver highlight. A foam-board keyboard clutch or a slim control-panel belt. Avoid the cardboard box version; you can't sit, and the corners catch everyone you pass.
20. Gary the Snail Costume

Gary is blue with a pink shell, so the shell is your project. A pale-blue sweater dress, matching leggings and blue sneakers, then a pink backpack painted or appliquéd with a red spiral and purple spots. Using a backpack means the shell carries your things too, and it's light. Soft green eye stalks on a headband with painted foam eyes at the tips. A short blue wig or blue ponytail, blue shadow, pink blush and a subtle cat-eye. Pink gloves stand in for his underside. He meows like a cat, so a little catlike pose now and then does the rest.
21. Mermaid Man Costume

Mermaid Man is orange, green and lavender, and the colours do the work. A bright orange fitted top, black high-waisted shorts and green opaque tights, purple gloves, green ankle boots and a lavender cape. Fasten the cape to the top's shoulder seams with snaps rather than a tie at the throat, which pulls back every time you move. A wide black belt with a yellow shell emblem. A short white wig brushed away from the face and a purple eye mask in makeup or fabric. Two lavender shell appliqués on the bodice, and a foam communicator rather than anything weapon-like. Best with a Barnacle Boy beside you.
22. Barnacle Boy Costume

Barnacle Boy is the easy half of the duo. A red long-sleeve top with a wide blue sailor collar trimmed in white, black shorts over blue tights, black gloves and ankle boots. A small blue neckerchief under the collar and a black eye mask. A white sailor cap on a short grey wig or a pinned low bun. A foam conch communicator or a folded superhero newspaper. A black skater skirt or knee-length culottes work in place of the shorts. Next to Mermaid Man, the red and orange make the pair obvious from across a room.
23. Flying Dutchman Costume

The Flying Dutchman should feel ghostly and nautical, not frightening. A sea-green maxi dress with a ragged layered hem in soft chiffon, a darker green cropped jacket, a striped sash and flat green boots. Cut the ragged hem in rough points, but keep it above the floor; chiffon trailing on the ground gets stepped on. A long mint-green wig with loose waves under a battered pirate hat. Pale green makeup, dark teal liner and shaded cheekbones, no wounds. A drape of light fabric round the shoulders for floating mist, a treasure-map scroll or a plastic green lantern, and no swords.
24. King Neptune Costume

King Neptune is the regal one. A turquoise column dress, a gold waist belt and a flowing emerald cape, gold cuffs, sea-green tights and metallic flats or low boots. A long aqua wig under a tall gold crown with shell and wave motifs; a crown that tall needs combs sewn inside, or it rocks forward. Teal shadow, gold highlight and a green costume beard on skin-safe adhesive, patch-tested on your wrist the day before. A foam trident only if the venue allows props, otherwise a shell-topped staff with a soft end. Keep the fabrics light, since the crown, wig and cape already add a lot of volume.
25. Princess Mindy Costume

Princess Mindy is Neptune's daughter, and her look is young and casual. A pink cropped T-shirt with a small heart over a matching camisole, a long green mermaid skirt and green flats. Round black glasses, a yellow bangle and a small gold crown or yellow bow. A bright blue bob wig is the strongest link to the character. Pink lipstick, blue liner and a little green shimmer at the temples rather than full face colour. A mermaid skirt cut tight at the knee makes stairs hard, so look for one with a stretch panel there, or use a flared green maxi instead.
26. Bubble Buddy Costume

Bubble Buddy is a minimal, clever costume. A clear or iridescent raincoat over a white fitted top and pale-blue leggings, with clear boots or white sneakers with translucent laces. Clear vinyl circles on the coat make the bubbles; sew them on with a long stitch length, because a short stitch perforates vinyl and it tears along the line. A sleek bubble ponytail with clear elastics, or a pale-blue wig. Glossy blue shadow, pearl highlight and iridescent face gems. A clear balloon on a short ribbon or a small beach ball with a friendly face, kept compact. It shows up best in a bright room.
27. Pink Jellyfish Costume

The pink jellyfish suits a party where you want to float rather than act. A layered blush dress with a sheer pink cape, iridescent tights and pink platform sneakers or ankle boots. Tie curling ribbon and soft fabric tentacles to the cape hem, cut at mid-calf so you can't tread on them. A dome-shaped pink hat or a light umbrella-style headpiece makes the bell. Loose pink waves, pearly eyes with lavender highlights. A bubble-shaped purse rather than a big prop. Battery lights tucked inside the cape add sparkle, but the colour should hold up without them, and no cords should trail.
28. Krabby Patty Costume

The Krabby Patty turns you into the burger. A tan tunic dress is the bun, with wide bands of green, yellow, red and brown felt for lettuce, cheese, tomato and patty. A second rounded tan panel at the shoulders is the top bun, dotted with small white felt sesame seeds. Sew the bands onto the dress rather than gluing them, so the whole thing bends when you sit. Brown leggings, tan sneakers and a high bun wrapped in sesame-speckled tan fabric. Warm neutral makeup, red lipstick and green liner, plus a restaurant tray or a red checked bag.
29. French Narrator Costume

The French Narrator is the subtle choice, the one I'd wear to work. A red-and-black striped shirt tucked into high-waisted navy trousers or a navy midi skirt, a red neck scarf, black loafers and a blue pea coat if it's cold. A short navy bob or your own hair under a red beret, winged liner and red lipstick. A vintage-look diving map or a small telescope, plus a watch and clipboard as a nod to the famous time-skip cards. People recognise the stripes and the timekeeping before anything else, and a few lines in a French accent help.
30. Krusty Krab Pizza Costume

The Krusty Krab pizza costume celebrates the delivery episode. A tan circle skirt and matching fitted top with red felt sauce, pale-yellow cheese and coloured toppings across both. A small white collar and the red tie over the top tie it back to SpongeBob's uniform. Yellow tights, striped socks and black sneakers, a yellow bob wig under a small restaurant hat, blue liner, rosy blush and brown sponge spots at the temples. A light pizza box or a round pizza bag. A red insulated delivery bag doubles as storage and finishes the delivery idea.
Wearing Teal, Pink or Green Skin Without Staining Your Collar
Squidward, Handsome Squidward, the Flying Dutchman, Plankton and Pearl all suggest coloured skin, and that's where most of these costumes get messy. Water-activated face paint is my choice for big areas; it dries matte and transfers less than cream paint, which stays soft and comes off on everything it touches. Test it on the inside of your wrist the day before, because some pigments, reds and greens especially, irritate sensitive skin.
- Start on clean, moisturised skin, and let the moisturiser sink in before you paint.
- Apply thin layers with a damp sponge, letting each dry, rather than one thick coat that cracks.
- Press translucent setting powder over the dried paint, then mist with a setting spray.
- Stop the colour at the jaw and fade it out, rather than painting down the neck into your collar.
- Take it off with an oil cleanser or makeup wipes first, then soap and water. Scrubbing hard leaves the skin red.
If you don't want full face colour, use it only at the forehead and temples where a bald cap or wig meets the skin, and keep the rest as ordinary makeup in the character's shade. It reads almost as well and is far more comfortable for a long party.
Props You Won't Want to Abandon by Ten O'Clock
Spatulas, nets, clarinets, guitars and pizza boxes all help name the character, but anything you carry by hand is something you can't eat, drink or hold a phone with. I make props that can hang or clip on. A burger prop with a hidden loop on the back clips to a belt; a foam clarinet on a cord hangs across the body; the jellyfishing net folds into a bag. Make them from foam, felt or light card, never wood or real metal, and keep them short enough that you can turn round in a crowded kitchen without hitting someone.
Two Colours and One Prop Are Enough for Bikini Bottom
Almost every character here comes down to the same recipe: get the two main colours right, add the one detail that names them, like the striped socks, the purple flowers or Plankton's eye, and then carry one prop. The classic SpongeBob uniform is still the safest start, Patrick and Gary are the easiest after that, and Karen, Bubble Buddy or the French Narrator are for when you want people to think for a second. Thrifted basics, felt, ribbon and removable fabric tape cover most of the making. Choose clothes you can sit, walk and eat in, and you'll still be in character at the end of the night.
