A penguin is one of the friendliest costumes to sew, because the whole animal comes down to black, a white belly and a flash of orange. You can make one from a hoodie and a scrap of fleece in an evening, or go as far as sequins and tailcoats. I've gathered thirty-five versions here: easy hoodie and no-sew builds, padded and cardboard bodies, real species like the emperor and the macaroni, babies, a maternity bump, couples, families, a whole colony, and a pet. For each one I've noted the construction choice that matters, since a penguin that sheds its flippers halfway through the party is a sad sight.

Cutting a Penguin Belly That Lies Flat
The white belly is the piece everyone notices, and it's the one that most often looks homemade in the wrong way: wrinkled, crooked or peeling at the edge. A few habits fix that.
Make a paper pattern first
Put the black top on, or lay it flat, and sketch the oval on newspaper. It should start just below the collarbone and end at the hip, and it should be narrower than you think. Cut the paper, hold it against the top in a mirror, and adjust before you touch the fabric.
Match the stretch
Use a white fabric that stretches about as much as the top underneath. White fleece on a fleece hoodie, white jersey on a stretchy long-sleeve top. Stiff felt on a stretchy shirt ripples and pulls away as soon as you raise your arms.
Attach it in the right order
Pin the center first, then the top and bottom, then the sides, smoothing outward as you go. Sew with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch, or hand-stitch with a running stitch about a quarter inch in from the edge. If you're gluing, glue the whole back of the panel and let it dry flat overnight.
1. Classic Black And White Penguin Costume

The classic version is the one I'd teach a beginner. A fitted black long-sleeve top and black leggings, a white felt or fleece oval from chest to waist, and black fabric wings along the arms. Stop the wings at the wrist so hands stay free for treats and drinks. A black beanie carries white eye circles and a small orange felt beak, which I stitch rather than glue because a beanie stretches every time it goes on. Orange socks pulled over black sneakers make convincing webbed feet. A plush fish or a blue bucket decorated as a pond gives you something to hold.
2. Easy DIY Hoodie Penguin Costume

A black zip-up hoodie is my favorite penguin base, since the hood already gives you the head. Attach a large white fleece oval to the front with hook-and-loop strips or safety pins, so the hoodie survives into ordinary life afterwards. Black felt flippers sewn into the underarm seam move with you. Big felt eyes and a soft stuffed beak go on the hood. Fleece is the right white here; it doesn't fray and won't show the pins much. Add black joggers, orange foam shoe covers over supportive sneakers, and a silver paper fish for photos.
3. No-Sew Felt Penguin Costume

No sewing machine at all, just felt and a strong fabric glue. Start with a black sweatshirt and loose black pants, then glue a white felt belly to the shirt. Here's the catch with glue: craft felt on a stretchy sweatshirt peels at the edges once you move, so I glue the whole back of the panel, not just a border, and let it cure overnight under a book. Long rounded flippers go just below the shoulders. A wide black headband holds felt eyes and a beak. Tape orange felt feet onto old black sneakers, and carry a painted cardboard iceberg.
4. Women’s Tutu Penguin Costume

A tutu turns the penguin into a party outfit rather than a full animal. Pair a black bodysuit or long-sleeve top and black leggings with a layered black-and-white tulle skirt, a white heart-shaped chest panel and short black satin wings near the shoulders. A tiny black feather headpiece with eyes and a beak sits on top of a high bun. For makeup, white shimmer on the lids, black winged liner and pink blush. Orange tights or knee socks add color. Tulle scratches against bare legs over a long evening, so I keep the leggings or tights under it.
5. Glam Sequin Penguin Costume

The sequin penguin is the one for an evening party where you want to look dressed up first and animal second. A black sequin jumpsuit or top and pants with a smooth white satin belly gives the shape, and black cape sleeves tapered like flippers keep the arms free. Sequins are fussy to sew; I'd buy the sequin piece ready made and only add the satin panel, stitched by hand along the edge to avoid breaking a machine needle on the sequins. Silver shadow, crisp black liner and an orange lip. Pointed black ankle boots, a metallic fish clutch, and an icy blue faux-fur wrap for outside.
6. Men’s Tuxedo Penguin Costume

Formalwear already looks like a penguin, which is the joke this one rests on. Black trousers, a white dress shirt and a black dinner jacket or tailcoat, with an orange bow tie swapped in for the black. A white waistcoat strengthens the belly. I make the flippers as black fabric sleeves that slip on over the jacket arms, so a rented or borrowed jacket never gets a stitch in it. A black bowler with small eyes and an orange felt beak, removable orange felt tops on black dress shoes, and a silver tray of plush fish for the punchline.
7. Kids Fleece Penguin Costume

For children I go straight to fleece. It's warm, soft against the neck and makes the rounded shape without padding. Sew a black fleece tunic with a white oval front over roomy black pants, and set padded flippers along the sides so they end above the hands. A fleece hood with big eyes and a stuffed orange beak keeps the head warm. Orange fleece shoe covers over nonslip sneakers or winter boots handle a wet sidewalk. Black is hard to see at night, so I add a strip of reflective trim around the belly edge. A blue bucket with snowflakes carries treats.
8. Toddler Hooded Penguin Costume

A toddler penguin has to come off fast for the bathroom, so a zippered hooded romper beats anything that pulls over the head. Use a roomy black romper with a white belly patch and short padded wings set below the arms. Stitch the fabric eyes and the small flexible beak on firmly, and skip any loose craft pieces a toddler can pick off and chew. A dab of pink on the cheeks is plenty of makeup. Orange leggings make the penguin legs, and black sneakers with orange fabric covers keep the grip. A plush fish or soft snowball goes along for photos.
9. Baby Penguin Costume

A baby penguin is mostly about the snaps. Choose a soft black cotton or fleece onesie with a white tummy panel and a snap crotch, so changes don't mean undressing the whole costume. Keep the side flippers short so the arms move freely, and use a stretchy black cap with embroidered eyes and a flat orange beak; embroidery has nothing to pull off. No makeup. Orange socks with grip soles make the feet. For a stroller outing, white felt snow on the canopy and a plush fish fastened beside the seat, never loose in it.
10. Plus Size Penguin Costume

A full-figure penguin works best when you let a long line do the work instead of a padded mascot suit. A black knit tunic or relaxed jumpsuit with a long white oval panel centered down the front lengthens the body, and a black cape over the shoulders becomes the flippers when you lift your arms. I cut the oval narrower than people expect; a wide white panel spreads the figure, a narrow one draws the eye down. Black leggings or opaque tights, cushioned black boots with removable orange accents, and a blue crossbody shaped like a block of ice.
11. Maternity Penguin And Egg Costume

The penguin and egg is a sweet way to dress a bump. Start with a stretchy black maxi dress, or maternity leggings with a long-sleeve tunic, and place a large white egg-shaped felt panel over the bump with a soft gray outline so it reads from a distance. I attach the egg with a few hand stitches at the top only, so it hangs free and doesn't pull as the bump moves. A black cape suggests the wings, and a simple headband with eyes and a beak sits over a low bun. Supportive black slip-ons with orange felt, and a nest-style basket of fabric snowballs.
12. Teen Skater Penguin Costume

Teens usually want to look like themselves with a penguin hint, and the skater version does that. An oversized black hoodie and loose black cargo pants with a white fleece belly patch make the base, and slim flipper panels along the sleeves stop short of the wrist. A black beanie with embroidered eyes and a small orange beak replaces a full hood. Swap foot covers for black-and-white sneakers with orange laces. Graphic liner and silver shadow if they want makeup. Removable iceberg decals on a skateboard are the prop, though I'd leave the board at home for a crowded party.
13. Cozy Pajama Penguin Costume

For an indoor party or pajama day, sleepwear is the most comfortable penguin base there is. A black pajama set or fleece onesie with a white belly panel on the front, short black flippers under the arms and a detachable orange bow tie at the neck. Decorate a soft sleep cap with fabric eyes and a flat beak. Loose braids or hair tucked under the cap. Black slippers with orange felt toes do the feet, but only indoors; slipper soles are slick on a wet porch. A plush fish and a small blue pillow decorated like an iceberg finish the scene.
14. Padded Round Penguin Costume

The round penguin gets its laugh from scale, and it doesn't need a noisy inflatable suit. Put a lightweight foam or quilt-batting panel under the front of an oversized black sweatshirt and cover the curve with smooth white fabric. I tie the padding in with ribbons so it lifts out for the car ride; sitting in a padded belly for twenty minutes is miserable. Tapered black pants balance the volume. Broad fabric flippers on the sleeves, a padded hood with cartoon eyes, and orange foam covers on black walking shoes. A tiny fish prop makes the body look even bigger.
15. Cardboard Penguin Costume

Cardboard gives the boldest penguin outline, but it needs care to wear. Cut two large ovals, paint them black, add the white belly and face on the front, and join them over the shoulders with wide black straps. I tape every cut edge with soft cloth tape, since raw cardboard edges scrape forearms and catch on other people in a crowd. Keep the panels above the knee so stairs and chairs are still possible. A black shirt and pants underneath, a black beanie, orange socks and cardboard toe panels. Cardboard softens in rain, so this one is for dry nights or indoors.
16. Emperor Penguin Costume

The emperor penguin is the tall, elegant one, and the golden neck markings are what set it apart. A sleek black bodysuit or long tunic over black leggings, with a white chest panel that narrows toward the neck, and soft yellow and orange felt patches on both sides of the upper chest. Long black flippers keep the profile slim. A close-fitting black hood with small eyes and a narrow orange-and-black beak, with gold shadow and a touch of yellow at the temples. Black boots with orange toe covers. A white foam egg in a fabric pouch near the feet nods to how emperors keep their eggs warm.
17. Rockhopper Penguin Costume

The rockhopper lives or dies by its yellow eyebrow feathers. I build them on a black beanie, gluing faux-feather tufts to a felt strip first and then stitching the strip to the hat, which keeps glue off the knit and lets the tufts flex. The rest is simple: a black long-sleeve shirt and slim black pants, a white belly panel, narrow black wings under the arms and a small yellow patch near the collar. Dramatic black liner and yellow shadow suit the spiky look. Orange socks over sturdy black boots. A gray foam rock is a funny prop for a bird named for hopping.
18. Little Blue Penguin Costume

The little blue penguin swaps black for deep navy, which is a nice change when everyone else at the party is in black. A navy hoodie and joggers with a pale white or light gray belly, and compact navy flippers that stop at the elbow to match a small, round bird. Tiny eyes and a short charcoal-and-orange beak on the hood. Cool blue shadow and a soft gray nose accent. Navy sneakers with dusty orange covers keep the palette muted. Navy fleece fades faster than black, so I pre-wash it once before cutting to stop it bleeding onto the white.
19. Macaroni Penguin Costume

The macaroni penguin brings the most color and texture of the species here. Start with a black jumpsuit or black shirt and pants, a clean white belly panel, long sleeve flippers and a small orange patch under the chin. The headpiece is a black cap with bright yellow feather tufts sweeping back from the forehead. Feathers shed, so I give the cap a firm shake outdoors before the party. Yellow shadow, black liner and an orange nose tip. Orange spats over black ankle boots, and a blue bowl of yellow yarn noodles as a pun on the name.
20. Explorer And Penguin Couple Costume

A penguin and a polar explorer tell a little story and keep one of you properly warm. The penguin wears a black hoodie and pants, a white belly, flippers, an eye-and-beak hood and orange shoe covers. The explorer wears a pale blue parka, insulated pants, snow boots, gloves and a fur-trimmed hood, with a bit of white frost makeup on the brows. Cardboard binoculars and a folded map with snowflake symbols go with the explorer, a plush fish with the penguin. For an outdoor night, the explorer has the easier costume, so I'd give that role to whoever feels the cold.
21. Matching Penguin Couple Costume

Matching penguins are easy to coordinate, so the fun is in giving each one a small difference. Both wear black tops and pants, white belly panels, orange shoe covers and headpieces with eyes and beaks. One gets a neat orange bow tie and structured flippers; the other a white tulle skirt or a silver collar. I cut both bellies from one paper pattern so they match exactly, then let the details differ. Each person picks a beanie or hood for comfort. Two halves of a cardboard fish that join when you stand together make the photo.
22. Penguin And Snowman Couple Costume

A penguin and a snowman make a cheerful winter pair. The penguin is black leggings and sweatshirt, a white belly patch, flipper sleeves, an orange-beak headband and black sneakers with orange covers. The snowman wears an all-white sweatsuit with large black felt buttons, a striped scarf and a soft black top hat, plus an orange foam nose on an adjustable elastic. White face makeup on the snowman is optional; I'd use it sparingly because it transfers onto a white collar. A blue umbrella hung with paper snowflakes, or matching snowball buckets, finishes the pair.
23. Penguin And Fish Couple Costume

The penguin and its dinner is a gentle joke couples like. One person wears a classic penguin: black jumpsuit, white belly, flipper sleeves, orange beak hood and orange-covered sneakers. The other wears a metallic silver fish-shaped tunic over a pale blue top and leggings, with soft fabric fins and a silver headband with big fish eyes. Metallic fabric frays badly when cut, so I seal the tunic edges with a narrow hem or a line of fabric glue. Keep the tunic above the knee for walking. The penguin can carry an empty plate for the photo pose.
24. Parent And Baby Penguin Costume

A parent-and-baby penguin pairing is lovely when the baby rides in a front carrier. The adult wears a black sweatshirt dress or jumpsuit with a white chest panel, black flippers, orange shoe covers and a penguin headband. The baby wears a black onesie with a white belly, a stretchy beak cap and orange grip socks. I make a removable black-and-white panel that clips over the outside of the carrier, so it reads as one big penguin carrying a little one. Keep everything away from the baby's face, and carry a crossbody bag so both hands stay free.
25. Penguin Family Costume

A penguin family scales easily from two people to a whole household. Everyone gets a black base, a white belly, flipper sleeves, orange feet and an eye-and-beak headpiece, then each person gets one detail of their own: a bow tie, a silver scarf, a bright winter hat, a tutu. When I'm sewing for several people, I make every belly from the same white fleece so the group reads together even though the black bases come from different closets. Babies wear onesies, others wear sweatshirts. A wagon or stroller wrapped in pale blue fabric becomes the family iceberg.
26. Penguin Colony Group Costume

A big group becomes a colony with one simple formula: everyone wears their own black top and pants, and you supply the matching white bellies, wings, orange shoe accents and black penguin hats. Then add species touches: yellow eyebrow feathers on a few, gray bellies on others, orange neck patches, a bow tie or two. Cutting a dozen bellies is fastest if you stack four layers of fleece and cut them at once with sharp shears. Each person carries a different light prop. For the group photo, shorter penguins in front and taller ones behind, like a real huddle.
27. Dancing Penguin Costume

A dancing penguin has to stay put through spins, so everything gets stitched and nothing gets glued. A black leotard or fitted athletic top with black joggers, and a white belly panel cut from stretch fabric so it moves with the body instead of puckering. Attach the flippers from shoulder to elbow only, which leaves the forearms free. An orange bow tie and a small black hat with eyes and a short beak, secured with bobby pins through a bun. Silver lids and bold liner read well under party lights. Thin orange fabric covers over dance sneakers, and a painted foam cane.
28. Waiter Penguin Costume

The waiter penguin is the formal penguin with a job. Black trousers, a white button-down, a black vest and an orange bow tie, with a white oval panel across the vest and narrow flippers on the outer sleeves. A small black cap with eyes and a flat beak. If you'll be on your feet for hours, black nonslip shoes matter more than anything else here, and orange felt over the toes does the feet. The tray is the prop: plush fish, blue paper ice cubes and a covered dish, all glued down, because a tray of loose props scatters the first time someone bumps you.
29. Professor Penguin Costume

The professor penguin suits office parties and school days where a full animal suit would be too much. A black cardigan or blazer over a white shirt and black trousers, a rounded white belly, small flippers on the jacket sleeves and an orange bow tie. A black cap with eyes and a short beak keeps the face open. Round glasses and a touch of gray temporary color in the hair add age. Black loafers with orange toe covers. A blue notebook, a foam pencil and a few cardboard fish labeled as research samples give you things to talk about all evening.
30. Superhero Penguin Costume

A superhero penguin is an original character, so you can design the emblem however you like. A black athletic jumpsuit or top and leggings with a white belly panel, a short icy blue cape over broad black flippers, a silver snowflake emblem on the chest and an orange foam utility belt. I attach the cape with hook-and-loop tape at the shoulders so it pulls away if someone steps on it. A black eye mask under a penguin headband, silver shadow and strong liner. Black boots with orange foam tops, and an iceberg-shaped foam shield to carry.
31. Penguin Ballerina Costume

The penguin ballerina works for children, teens or adults, and it's one of the quickest to sew. A black leotard and opaque black tights, a layered black-and-white tutu, a small white oval on the bodice and light satin flippers along the upper arms. Satin frays as soon as you cut it, so I finish the flipper edges with a quick zigzag or a line of fray stopper. A tiny penguin headpiece pinned into a ballet bun, silver shadow and pink blush. Black ballet flats with removable orange felt toes, and a pale blue ribbon wand with snowflakes. Keep the tutu short for safe movement.
32. Penguin Cheerleader Costume

A penguin cheerleader has the most movement of any idea here, so fit matters. A black pleated skirt with built-in shorts, a black-and-white athletic top, a large white belly panel and orange trim at the neck and waist. Short black flippers attach behind the arms so pom-poms still swing freely. I sew the belly panel from stretch knit; woven fabric on an athletic top pulls and wrinkles every time the arms go up. A high ponytail with an orange ribbon and a penguin headband. Black sneakers with orange laces, pale blue and white pom-poms, and a foam megaphone.
33. Rainbow Penguin Costume

The rainbow penguin keeps the shape and adds a surprise. A black top and leggings with a white belly panel edged in bands of rainbow felt, and black flippers lined with colored satin so the color only flashes when the arms move. That lining trick is the part I like most; it keeps the outline clearly penguin while still giving a child their rainbow. A black beanie with eyes, an orange beak and a small rainbow tuft. Colored ribbons braided into long hair, pastel shadow and pink cheeks. Black sneakers with orange toe covers, and a cloud-shaped bag with ribbon streamers.
34. Pet Penguin Costume

For a pet penguin, the costume has to be light and come off in seconds. A soft black vest sized for the animal, with a flat white belly panel across the chest or back, and small fabric flippers along the sides that clear the legs. A hood with eyes and a beak only if the pet already accepts head coverings; otherwise an orange collar bow does the job. No makeup or color on the animal, ever. Booties only for pets used to them. If your pet won't wear anything, you can be the penguin in black and white and carry the plush fish yourself.
35. Last-Minute Closet Penguin Costume

This one comes straight out of the closet in about fifteen minutes. A black sweater, black jeans or leggings and black shoes, then cut a large oval from an old white T-shirt or a pillowcase and safety-pin it to the sweater from the inside so the pins don't show. Drape a black scarf over the shoulders so the ends hang as flippers. A black knit cap gets paper eyes and an orange cardstock beak backed with tape. Regular blush, white shadow and an orange dot on the nose. Orange socks over shoes, and a bottle wrapped in silver paper as a fish.
An All-Black Costume After Dark
A penguin is mostly black, and black clothing almost disappears on an unlit street. The white belly helps from the front, but from behind a penguin is a dark shape. If you're trick-or-treating, sew a strip of reflective tape across the back of the shoulders and down the outside of each flipper; it reads as trim in daylight and shines under headlights. A small clip-on light on the treat bucket is worth adding for children.
Black fleece also collects every bit of lint, pet hair and leaf it touches. Keep a lint roller in your bag, and turn the costume inside out to wash it so the outside stays smooth.
Orange Feet That Stay On
Shoe covers slip, flip and trip more people than any other penguin piece. I make them as simple felt or foam shapes that cover only the toe of the shoe, held with a band of elastic under the arch, so the sole stays bare and gripping. Full covers that wrap under the shoe turn slick on a wet floor.
- Measure the elastic around the shoe, not the foot, and sew it slightly snug.
- Foam covers hold their shape; felt ones need a second layer to stop curling.
- For babies and toddlers, orange grip socks are safer than any cover.
Black, White and One Spot of Orange
Every penguin here uses the same pieces: a black base, a white belly, flippers that leave the hands free, an orange beak and orange feet. What changes is the fabric. Fleece for warmth and children, satin and tulle for movement, sequins for a dressy night, cardboard for a bold shape on a dry evening. Stitch anything that will be pulled or stretched, keep feet you can walk in, and add a little reflective trim if you'll be out after dark. Then pick the one detail, a bow tie or yellow eyebrows or a tutu, that makes your penguin yours.
