Three people is a great size for a group costume. It's big enough to tell a story and small enough that everyone actually matters. It's also the size where one person is most often left as the afterthought, wearing the role nobody wanted. The trios below fix that by giving each person a role you'd notice even if they walked in alone: famous character sets, closet-color concepts and three things that simply belong together. Each one covers clothes, hair, makeup, props and shoes. The rule I come back to every time is to repeat one visual detail across all three people, whether that's a fabric, a glove, a shoe or a makeup finish. That repeat is what turns three costumes into one group.

Sharing Out Three Roles Fairly
Most trio costumes go wrong long before anyone buys a wig. Two people get the fun roles and the third ends up as the sidekick in a sweatshirt. A little planning up front fixes that, and it's the part I'd never skip.
- Pick the theme together, then let each person claim a role before anyone shops. If two people want the same character, choose a different trio rather than forcing it.
- Check that every role works on its own. If one person would look like they're in normal clothes when they walk to the bar alone, give that role a stronger signature piece: a wig, a hat or a bold color.
- Decide the shared detail in writing: white gloves, silver belts, one shade of shimmer or matching sneakers. One repeated element is enough; three makes it look like a uniform.
- Match the effort level. If one person is making a foam shell and the others are wearing hoodies, the group looks uneven. Agree on roughly how much making each person will do.
- Talk about budget early. A full wig and a thrifted dress can cost very different amounts, and it's easier to adjust the plan than to resent it later.
Height and build matter less than people fear. Character trios almost never rely on matching body shapes. Color, hair and one prop each do the recognizing.
1. Powerpuff Girls Trio Costume

The Powerpuff Girls are color-coded, which is half the work done. Blossom wears a pink skater dress, a red bow and an orange ponytail with black flats. Bubbles gets a blue dress and blonde pigtails in blue ties with white sneakers. Buttercup wears green, a short black wig and black ankle boots. The shared detail is the cartoon finish: white knee socks and a thick black waistband on all three, which I make from wide black elastic so it sits flat. Rosy cheeks and shadow in each dress color keep makeup simple. Small felt stars or heart bags are enough props. Thrifted skater dresses are easy to find in all three colors.
2. Sanderson Sisters Trio Costume

The Sanderson sisters give three people very different shapes inside one theme. Winifred wears a long green dress, a purple robe, a curly red updo, berry lipstick and heeled boots. Mary takes layered red and brown, a purple capelet and that high twisted hair, with sturdy lace-ups. Sarah gets a flowing mauve dress, blonde waves and soft lavender eyes. The hair is what people recognize, so I'd put each sister's budget into her wig before anything else. Velvet, lace and slightly aged fabrics tie them together, along with vintage necklaces and light twig brooms. Keep it theatrical rather than scary.
3. KPop Demon Hunters Trio Costume

Rumi, Mira and Zoey bring pop-star energy to a trio. Each look starts with a colorful cropped jacket, a fitted top, a pleated skirt or wide pants and chunky platform sneakers. Hair separates them: a long purple braid for Rumi, sleek pink for Mira and a short teal style for Zoey. Shimmery stage makeup, graphic liner, a few face gems and glossy lips finish all three. Swap weapons for metallic mics, folding fans or light sticks. Matching belts, fingerless gloves and silver jewelry are the shared detail. Platform sneakers beat boots here; you'll be dancing.
4. Woody Buzz And Jessie Trio Costume

Woody, Buzz and Jessie read from a distance because their silhouettes are so different. Woody wears jeans, a yellow checked shirt, a cow-print vest, a red neckerchief, brown boots and a cowboy hat. Buzz is a white jumpsuit or white separates with green and purple felt panels, white sneakers and a soft hood. Jessie gets jeans, a white Western shirt, yellow cuffs, a red hat, a red braided wig and brown boots. Keep makeup light, with rosy cheeks for Jessie. A coiled rope, a removable sheriff badge and cardboard control-panel details on Buzz are the props. Buzz's felt panels go on best with iron-on adhesive, which won't stiffen the jumpsuit.
5. Mario Luigi And Princess Peach Costume

Mario, Luigi and Peach is the trio where two people share almost the same pattern. Mario wears blue overalls, a red long-sleeve shirt, white gloves, brown shoes and a red cap with a felt letter emblem. Luigi copies the formula in green. Stick-on mustaches lose grip once you start talking, so I'd draw them with a brow pencil instead. Peach wears a pink puff-sleeve dress, a blonde curled wig, a small gold crown, blue earrings and pink flats. Plush stars, toy coins or foam mushrooms make good photo props. White gloves on all three tie the group together. Wear thin layers under the overalls for a warm party.
6. Alvin And The Chipmunks Trio Costume

The Chipmunks are close to pajamas, which is why people love them. Alvin wears a big red sweatshirt with a yellow felt letter, a red cap, jeans or leggings and sneakers. Simon gets a blue hoodie, round glasses, dark pants and blue sneakers. Theodore takes a green hoodie, tan pants and neutral shoes. Give everyone small brown ears and a few whiskers in skin-safe eyeliner. Matching tousled hair is a cute extra. Mics or snack bags are the props. The oversized sweatshirts fit warm layers underneath for a cold night outside.
7. Three Blind Mice Costume

Three Blind Mice is a classic pun, and it works because all three wear the same uniform. Gray sweaters, leggings or pants and black shoes make the base, with mouse ears, stuffed gray tails, dark sunglasses and short canes. Keep the canes short and soft; long canes trip people in a crowd. Hair goes back so the ears show. A gray nose, soft whiskers and rosy cheeks finish the faces, and white gloves add cartoon charm. Give each mouse one silver accessory of her own, a bow tie, a scarf or glittery suspenders, so the three still have personalities. Dark sunglasses indoors are hard to see through, so pick a light tint.
8. Rock Paper Scissors Trio Costume

Rock, paper, scissors only works if each object is a whole outfit. Rock wears gray with textured foam shoulder pieces, silver-gray makeup and gray sneakers. Paper is all white with light blue ruled lines drawn in fabric marker, a folded-paper headpiece and white shimmer. Scissors gets silver pants, a gray top, metallic boots and a flat cardboard scissor shape across the torso. No sharp edges anywhere. Slicked-back hair and graphic silver liner on all three link them. Skip labels; the shapes explain it. It's gender-neutral and cheap, and the photo of the three doing the hand game is half the fun.
9. S’mores Trio Costume

A s'more splits naturally into three. Graham cracker wears tan separates with darker felt dots and perforation lines, beige sneakers and a square cracker headband. Chocolate gets a brown dress or brown shirt and pants, a silver wrapper belt, glossy brown makeup and dark shoes. Marshmallow wears a puffy white tunic, white leggings, cloud-like hair clips, rosy cheeks and white sneakers. Use felt or thin foam so everyone can sit. With only one cracker, line up with the marshmallow in the middle so the three still read as a stack. Small dessert purses are useful, and it suits school and family events.
10. Traffic Light Trio Costume

Traffic lights are about the easiest group coordination there is: red, yellow, green. Each person dresses head to toe in one color, with a big felt circle on the front. Match sneakers, socks, hair clips and eyeshadow to the color. Red carries a stop-sign purse, yellow a caution sign, green a foam "go" arrow. Keep hair back so headbands show. Black jackets over all three suggest the signal housing, and they're warm. Reflective tape on the circles shows up in car headlights, which is genuinely useful on a dark street.
11. Sun Moon And Star Costume

A sun, moon and star trio looks dreamy with very little sewing. The sun wears gold or yellow, a ray crown, warm golden makeup and metallic flats. The moon takes a silver dress or separates, a crescent headpiece, pearly highlighter and silver ankle boots. The star wears navy or white scattered with reflective stars, sparkly eyes and white shoes. Sheer capes in matching colors add movement. Hair goes into golden waves, a silver braided bun and a star-studded ponytail. Small battery lanterns or glow-stick wands are the props. Use the same shimmer on all three faces; it ties them together better than anything else.
12. Bee Butterfly And Ladybug Costume

A bee, a butterfly and a ladybug share a garden but very different shapes. The bee wears black-and-yellow stripes, sheer wings, an antenna headband, soft yellow eyes and black boots. The butterfly needs a bright dress or jumpsuit, large fabric wings, curled antennae and face gems with matching flats. The ladybug wears a red dress with black dots, small spotted wings, black tights, red lipstick and black sneakers. Buns or braids hold headbands better than loose hair. Flower bags or small watering cans are the props. Make all three pairs of wings from the same material, and keep them close to the body for a crowded room.
13. Wizard Of Oz Trio Costume

Dorothy, the Scarecrow and the Tin Man are a trio people recognize from the far end of a room. Dorothy wears a blue gingham dress over a white blouse, braided pigtails, rosy makeup and glittery red flats. The Scarecrow gets patched brown pants, a plaid shirt, a floppy hat, straw-colored yarn at the cuffs, painted freckles and boots. The Tin Man wears silver pants and a metallic top with a light funnel hat, silver face makeup and gray sneakers. A basket, a fabric diploma and a plush heart nod to each story. Use only cosmetic-grade silver, kept away from the eyes, and set it with powder so it doesn't rub off on the others.
14. Alice Mad Hatter And White Rabbit Costume

Alice, the Mad Hatter and the White Rabbit make a storybook trio with three strong roles. Alice wears a pale blue dress, white apron, black headband, blonde waves, natural makeup and black flats. The Hatter layers a bright blazer over a vest and trousers, with a tall decorated hat, bright eyes, curled hair and lace-up boots. The Rabbit wears white pants, a red vest, a dress shirt, rabbit ears, white face accents and polished shoes. A teacup, a big bow tie and a pocket watch are the props. Repeat red, blue and white across all three. Tall hats tip forward, so I stitch an elastic band inside the Hatter's to hold it on.
15. Cat In The Hat And Things Costume

The Cat in the Hat with Thing 1 and Thing 2 suits friends, siblings or a small family. The Cat wears black pants, a fitted black top, a white chest panel, white gloves, a big red bow tie, the striped stovepipe hat, cat ears and black sneakers, with simple whiskers. Both Things wear matching red jumpsuits or red tops and pants, white circle patches with their numbers, blue wigs and red or white shoes. If wigs are too hot, blue hair spray works. Books or kites are the props. The two Things must match closely so the Cat stands out as the centerpiece.
16. Scooby Velma And Shaggy Costume

Scooby, Velma and Shaggy come almost entirely out of a closet. Shaggy wears a loose green tee, brown pants, messy hair, light stubble in makeup and black sneakers. Velma needs an orange turtleneck, red pleated skirt, orange knee socks, red shoes, a short brown bob and glasses. Scooby wears a brown hoodie and joggers with dark felt spots, floppy ears, a blue collar, a tail, brown sneakers and a painted black nose. A magnifying glass, notebook and snack box are the props. Velma's orange turtleneck is often the hardest piece to find, so I'd shop for it first.
17. Ghostbusters Trio Costume

A Ghostbusters trio is mostly utility clothing and one homemade gadget each. Everyone wears a tan coverall or khaki shirt and cargo pants, black boots, fingerless gloves and a name patch. Practical hair and a light smoky eye are enough. The packs are the fun build: painted cardboard boxes, flexible tubing and empty plastic containers, strapped on with backpack straps. Keep them light; a heavy pack pulls at the shoulders and bumps people. Personalize each one with a different flashlight, badge or belt attachment. Matching coveralls make the team, and the name patches make each person themselves.
18. Barbie Fashion Trio Costume

A Barbie trio can show three eras in one pink story. The first person wears a pink gingham sundress, curled ponytail, pearl earrings and white pumps. The second picks a bright workout bodysuit over leggings, a visor, a high ponytail, leg warmers and retro sneakers. The third does a Western look with a pink vest, flared pants, a bandana, wavy hair and white boots. Glossy lips, polished nails and heart sunglasses link all three. Pink bags or a cardboard doll-box frame are good photo props. Let each person choose the era that suits her comfort, and swap heels for flats if you're walking.
19. Clueless Cher Dionne And Tai Costume

Cher, Dionne and Tai are three school looks for a nostalgic trio. Cher wears the yellow plaid blazer and skirt, white knee socks, blonde hair, a mini backpack and black Mary Janes. Dionne needs a black-and-white plaid set, a red cardigan, a tall hat, a braided style, statement earrings and knee socks with platform loafers. Tai takes a burgundy top, dark pleated skirt, curly red wig, soft brown makeup and chunky shoes. Notebooks, flip-style phones and fuzzy pens are the props. Choose plaids of a similar scale so the three look like they shop together. The blazers keep you warm outdoors.
20. Mean Girls Plastics Trio Costume

The Plastics should look coordinated, never identical. Regina wears a pink cardigan, black skirt, blonde waves, glossy makeup and heeled loafers. Gretchen gets a fitted plaid skirt, a matching sweater, long brown curls, statement earrings and ankle boots. Karen wears a pink minidress over a fitted tee, long blonde hair, soft pink shadow and flats. Small shoulder bags, notebooks and matching pink hair accessories tie them together. Add tights or choose longer skirts to suit the event. The shared pink, black and neutral palette carries the reference while each person dresses for her own shape.
21. Charlie’s Angels Trio Costume

Charlie's Angels needs nothing special, just good black clothes. Dress everyone in black jumpsuits, pantsuits or turtlenecks with flares, plus black ankle boots, wide belts and small crossbody bags. Hair is where the three differ: feathered waves, a smooth blowout and a high ponytail. Winged liner, bronzed cheeks and a neutral lip finish the faces. Carry sunglasses, notebooks or badges instead of weapon props. Practice the back-to-back pose. Each person can pick a black silhouette that fits her body; matching silver hardware on the belts keeps the team look.
22. Totally Spies Trio Costume

Sam, Clover and Alex are green, red and yellow catsuits. Each person wears a fitted long-sleeve top and leggings, or a jumpsuit, in her color. Sam has long red hair, Clover a blonde bob and Alex short black hair. Matching boots, slim belts, gloves and a compact as a gadget finish them. Graphic liner and shadow tinted to each color suit the cartoon. Toy gadgets and colorful glasses beat realistic spy gear. Buy opaque stretch fabric; thin leggings turn see-through under camera flash. Silver accessories on all three are the shared detail.
23. Three Good Fairies Costume

Flora, Fauna and Merryweather are red, green and blue, each with a long dress, a matching cape, a soft pointed hat and flats. Flora wears pink-red with warm rosy makeup. Fauna takes green with soft brown or auburn hair and botanical touches. Merryweather wears blue with silver-blue eyes and neat curls. Make the wands from wooden dowels, felt stars and ribbon, with no sharp points or loose glitter. White collars and the cape shape tie the three together. Matte fabric suits a daytime event, velvet an evening one. A small matching belt bag holds a phone and keys.
24. Minions Trio Costume

Minions are the trio that needs the least imagination from onlookers. Each person wears blue overalls, a yellow long-sleeve top, black gloves, yellow tights or pants and black sneakers or boots. A yellow beanie topped with short black yarn hair completes the head. Make goggles from silver craft foam and clear plastic, with the lenses cut out if they fog. Yellow face makeup is optional; the clothes carry the color. Vary the goggles (one eye or two), the hair and the overall patches to give each Minion a personality. Plush bananas and tiny lunch boxes make good props.
25. Ninja Turtle Trio Costume

Pick three Turtles and give each person a different mask color. Everyone wears a green hoodie and pants, a soft tan shell panel on the front, a light foam shell on the back, green gloves and sneakers. Masks come in blue, purple, red or orange. Tuck hair under a green beanie or the hood, and keep face makeup to a few green accents. Pizza boxes, plush slices or a skateboard carried as a prop replace weapons. I make back shells from a sheet of EVA foam warmed and curved with a heat gun; it holds its dome and weighs almost nothing. Rounded edges everywhere.
26. Pokémon Trainer Trio Costume

Two trainers and a Pikachu is the easiest Pokémon trio. The first trainer wears a red-and-white cap, a blue vest, jeans, fingerless gloves and sneakers. The second picks a yellow jacket, shorts or cargo pants, a belt bag, a colorful cap and hiking shoes. Pikachu wears a yellow hoodie outfit with long felt ears tipped in black, brown back stripes, red cheek circles, a lightning-bolt tail and yellow sneakers. Foam balls or plastic ornaments painted red and white are the trainers' props. Repeat yellow across all three. Stiffen Pikachu's ears with craft foam inside the felt so they stand upright.
27. Star Wars Droid Trio Costume

BB-8, R2-D2 and C-3PO can be done without any bulky robot suit. BB-8 wears white separates with orange and silver circles, a round headband, silver makeup and white sneakers. R2-D2 takes a white dress or jumpsuit with blue geometric panels, a silver cap, blue liner and metallic shoes. C-3PO wears a gold top and pants, gold gloves, slicked hair, warm metallic makeup and gold boots. Felt, foam or fabric paint add the mechanical details. Small clip lights are fun if they're secure. Pick fabrics with the same sheen so the three match, and skip full face masks.
28. Greek Goddess Trio Costume

Athena, Aphrodite and Artemis make an elegant trio. Athena wears a gray or navy draped dress, a braided updo, an owl brooch, metallic eyes and lace-up sandals. Aphrodite takes a blush or ivory gown, flowing waves, pearls, rosy makeup and gold flats. Artemis wears a green or silver tunic over leggings, a moon headpiece, a long braid, cool shimmer and boots. Capes, braided belts and leaf crowns connect them. A book, a hand mirror and a crescent bag replace weapon props. Draped dresses are cold in October, so plan fitted undershirts or tights in matching tones.
29. Three Little Pigs Costume

The Three Little Pigs share one pink uniform and get one prop each. Everyone wears pink overalls or pink shirts with jeans, pig ears, curly fabric tails, pink noses and comfortable sneakers. Rosy blush and two small painted nostrils keep the faces friendly. One pig carries a straw hat, one a bundle of craft sticks, one a brick-print cardboard sign. Matching pink gloves and bow ties are a cute extra. A pipe cleaner wrapped in pink felt makes a curly tail that stays curly. It works for any age, and warm layers fit under the overalls.
30. Goldilocks And Two Bears Costume

Goldilocks and two bears is a cozy storybook trio, and knitwear makes it warm. Goldilocks wears a blue or yellow dress, a white apron, blonde curls, a ribbon headband, rosy makeup and brown flats. The first bear takes a brown sweater, corduroy pants, round ears, a little nose makeup and lace-up boots. The second wears a tan cardigan, a matching skirt or trousers, fuzzy ears and neutral sneakers. Both bears get soft tails. Three light bowls labeled by size, or wooden spoons, are the props. Plaid scarves link the group. Nobody needs a coat over this one.
31. Little Red Riding Hood Grandma And Wolf Costume

Red Riding Hood, Grandma and the Wolf give you one sweet role, one funny role and one animal. Red wears a knee-length red cape over a simple dress, braided hair, soft rosy makeup, a woven basket and brown boots. Grandma wears a floral nightgown over leggings, a knit shawl, a gray wig, glasses and slippers with real rubber soles. The Wolf takes gray clothing, a faux-fur vest, soft ears, a tail, a gray nose and gray sneakers. Keep the Wolf friendly with rounded features and expressive brows. Small gingham touches on all three tie the scene together. I'd give the Wolf role to the person most comfortable being a little silly.
32. Ringmaster Clown And Acrobat Costume

A ringmaster, clown and acrobat bring the circus with three very different shapes. The ringmaster wears a red military-style jacket, black pants, a tall hat, a few gold makeup accents and polished boots. The clown takes colorful overalls or a patterned suit, a bright wig, cheerful makeup, an oversized bow tie and sneakers. The acrobat wears a jewel-toned unitard with a short skirt or fitted trousers, glittery eyes, a sleek bun and dance shoes. Hoops, ribbon wands and a light megaphone are the props. Repeat red and gold across all three. Keep the clown makeup light, since heavy cream face paint melts on a dance floor.
33. Chef Server And Food Critic Costume

A restaurant scene is a funny, cheap trio. The chef wears checked pants, a white jacket or button-down, a tall chef's hat, a neck scarf and nonslip black shoes. The server wears black pants, a white shirt, a waist apron and loafers. The critic takes a smart blazer, a turtleneck, trousers, glasses, sleek hair and polished shoes. A foam whisk, an empty tray and a notebook with a giant rating card are the props, and the critic's scorecard is where the jokes happen. Keep food props fake. Black and white clothes tie them together, with red neckwear as the shared accent. Good for an office party.
34. Farmer And Two Scarecrows Costume

A farmer and two scarecrows make a cozy autumn trio from thrift finds. The farmer wears denim overalls, a plaid shirt, a straw hat, a red bandana, freckles and work boots. Both scarecrows get patched shirts, loose pants or overalls, floppy hats, straw-colored yarn at the cuffs and brown shoes. Give one scarecrow orange patches and the other green so they're distinct. Stitched-line makeup and rosy cheeks keep it friendly. A basket of fake vegetables for the farmer and silk sunflowers for the scarecrows are the props. Yarn sheds less than real raffia, and won't scratch the wrists. Layer thermals under all three for an outdoor festival.
35. Garden Gnome Trio Costume

Three garden gnomes give you a lot of color in one simple shape. Each person wears a jewel-toned tunic over leggings, a wide belt, a tall felt hat and brown ankle boots, in red, blue and green, with white collars and brown accessories repeated. Braided yarn hair, natural hair or a light white beard depending on the person. Rosy cheeks, freckles and round brows keep makeup cheerful. Small watering cans, fabric mushrooms or a flowerpot are the props. A felt hat over about two feet tall flops; I stuff the tip with a little fiberfill so it holds a soft point. It's warm and gender-neutral.
36. Crayon Trio Costume

Pick three colors and become crayons. Each person wears a solid-color dress, jumpsuit or shirt and pants, with a black felt squiggle at the neckline and hem. A flexible cardstock cone hat, matching socks, colorful sneakers and a wide paper label around the middle finish it. Tuck hair under the hat or use temporary color. Matching liner and bright cheeks add personality. Red, blue and yellow make a classic set; pastels feel softer. No props needed, which frees everyone's hands for bags and treat buckets. Cardstock cones crush in a crowd, so I'd use craft foam for the hats if you're going somewhere busy.
37. M&M’s Trio Costume

An M&M's trio needs three solid colors and three white letters. Each person wears red, yellow or green, a shirt with pants or leggings, or a simple dress, with a large white lowercase "m" on the front in removable felt or fabric tape. White gloves, white sneakers and matching socks give the cartoon finish. Hair can stay natural or take a bow or cap in the color. Clean winged liner, rosy cheeks and a lip that suits the color finish the faces. Round crossbody bags echo the candy. Cut all three letters from one template so they're the same size.
38. Neapolitan Ice Cream Costume

Neapolitan ice cream is chocolate, vanilla and strawberry standing side by side. Chocolate wears brown with chocolate-colored hair clips, glossy neutral makeup and dark sneakers. Vanilla takes cream or white separates, pearl clips, champagne shimmer and beige shoes. Strawberry wears a pink dress or jumpsuit, a pink bow, rosy makeup and white or pink flats. Matching felt-and-tulle sprinkle headbands link them, and cone purses or a cardboard spoon are the props. Same silhouette on all three so they read as one block. Soft knits keep everyone warm and suit shirts and pants as well as dresses.
39. Ketchup Mustard And Hot Dog Costume

Ketchup, mustard and a hot dog make a funny cookout trio. Ketchup wears red head to toe with a pointed red cap, a white label panel, red makeup accents and red sneakers. Mustard is the same design in bright yellow. The hot dog wears brown inside a tan foam or felt bun, with a wavy red-and-yellow stripe across the front, brown shoes and a cap. Keep hair off the bottle hats and makeup minimal. Picnic baskets or checked napkins are the props. Skip brand logos. Flexible fabric panels beat rigid sandwich boards, because you can't sit down in a board.
40. Emoji Trio Costume

Choose three emoji faces and build them on yellow. Each person wears a yellow dress, sweatshirt and pants, or a round felt tunic over black, with big features in black, white, red and blue felt. Heart-eyes gets red heart sunglasses, the laughing face blue teardrop patches, and the wink one curved lash and red lips. Yellow hats, gloves and sneakers finish all three. Keep makeup to small echoes of each expression. Round yellow bags hold essentials. Practice the faces for photos. Flat felt tunics are far more comfortable than foam spheres or full-head masks.
41. Witch Vampire And Ghost Costume

A witch, a vampire and a ghost cover three Halloween classics. The witch wears a black or purple dress, a pointed hat, striped tights, a smoky eye and ankle boots, carrying a small broom. The vampire takes a burgundy vest, black pants or skirt, a high-collared cape, sleek hair, berry lipstick and polished shoes, with pale skin and small fangs. The ghost wears layered white, a sheer cape, white hair accents, pearly makeup and white sneakers, with no fabric over the face. Matching silver brooches connect the three. Each person can layer to suit the October weather.
42. Past Present And Future Costume

Past, present and future is a clever trio where everyone uses clothes they own. Past wears a vintage-style midi dress or suspenders and trousers, curled hair, classic makeup, lace-ups and an old-looking book. Present wears today's basics: jeans, a clean jacket, sneakers, natural hair and a cardboard phone. Future takes silver separates, geometric accessories, metallic makeup, sleek hair and white platform boots. A small clock badge on each person makes the idea readable. Silver watches on all three link the timeline. No real electronics. Present is the easiest role, so give it to whoever has the least time.
43. Sun Cloud And Rainbow Costume

A sun, a cloud and a rainbow make a bright weather trio. The sun wears yellow and gold, a ray headband, glowing highlighter and yellow sneakers. The cloud takes white or pale gray with soft polyester batting around the shoulders, a cloud headband, silver eyes and white shoes. The rainbow wears a striped dress or multicolored shirt and pants, rainbow clips, colorful liner and bright sneakers. Blue ribbon raindrops under the cloud and a small gold bag for the rainbow finish them. Batting sheds; tack it down with a few loose stitches rather than glue. White gloves on all three tie it together. It suits daytime parties and school events.
44. Disco Dancers Trio Costume

Three disco dancers coordinate through shine, not color. One wears a silver jumpsuit, another a gold wrap dress over tights, the third jewel-toned flares with a shimmery top. Platform shoes with stable soles, wide belts, hoops and tinted glasses finish the outfits. Voluminous curls, feathered waves or a high puff give the hair. Sparkly shadow, glossy lips and a few face gems make the dance-floor face. A mirrored clutch or a tiny disco-ball bag is the prop. Silver accessories on all three are the shared detail. Break in the platforms at home, because a new platform on a dance floor is a sprained ankle waiting to happen.
45. Astronaut Alien And Scientist Costume

An astronaut, an alien and a scientist share one space story. The astronaut wears a white jumpsuit with silver patches, a clear visor headband, minimal makeup and white boots. The alien takes a green or holographic outfit, an antenna headband, space buns, shimmery green eyes and silver sneakers. The scientist wears a white lab coat over bright trousers, glasses, neat hair, colorful makeup and loafers. A cardboard control panel, a glowing orb and an empty specimen jar are the props. Nobody gets sealed in a helmet. Silver belts and matching badges connect them. It suits friends, siblings or a family of three.
Standing in the Right Order for Photos
A trio costume is half finished until it's photographed, and the order you stand in changes how quickly people get it. A few arrangements I use:
When the order is the joke
Some trios only make sense in sequence. Traffic lights read best stacked as red, yellow, green, with the tallest person in red, or in a tight line in that order. A s'more needs the marshmallow in the middle. Past, present and future should stand left to right, the way people read a timeline. Rock, paper, scissors works better as a triangle facing each other than as a line.
When one character leads
For trios with a clear lead, put that person in the middle and slightly forward: the Cat in the Hat between the Things, Dorothy between the Scarecrow and Tin Man, the ringmaster between the clown and acrobat. For equal groups like the Powerpuff Girls or the Sanderson sisters, stagger heights so no one is hidden, and turn the outer two slightly in toward the center. Hold each prop at chest height, never down by the knees. Take one shot from far enough away to see shoes, since the full outfit is what you spent the time on.
Get All Three Dressed Together Once
The best trio is one where all three people would happily wear their role alone. Start with a concept that suits every personality, budget and comfort level, and split the roles early so nobody buys the same piece. Matching colors, a repeated accessory and similar fabric finishes make simple closet clothes look intentional. Light props and walkable shoes mean you spend the night enjoying it rather than fixing it. Whatever you pick, get all three dressed together at least once before Halloween. It's the quickest way to spot a missing detail and work out your photo poses.
