A fall city day means miles on pavement, a coat on and off, and somewhere a little nicer for lunch, and a good sneaker handles all three. That's why New Balance shows up so often in the outfits I plan for city weekends. The range is wide: the silver-trimmed 530, the classic 574, the chunky 9060, the technical 1906R and 2002R, the slim 327 and the flat leather 550. Colorful pairs are having a moment this fall, but retro neutrals are still the easiest to pack around. Below are fifteen outfits built mostly from pieces you probably own, from relaxed denim and knitwear to tailoring, dresses and athletic layers. Each one comes with notes on proportion, color and what to adjust for your height, shape and weather.

Packing a City Weekend Around Two Sneakers
For a fall city break, I build the suitcase around two sneaker pairs rather than one outfit per day. Shoes take the most space and do the most work, so they go in first. A small capsule that covers most of the outfits below looks like this:
- Two pairs of sneakers: one neutral retro runner, like a gray 574 or 530, and one in a contrasting shape, like a slim 327 or a leather 550.
- One coat: a trench for mild weather or a long wool coat if mornings will be cold. Wear it on the plane.
- Two bottoms: straight jeans and either tailored trousers or a midi skirt.
- Three tops: a fitted tee, a crewneck sweater and a shirt or turtleneck.
- One extra layer: a cardigan or blazer that works over all three tops.
Packing two pairs isn't just for variety. Shoes that get a day off dry out properly, which matters when you're walking several miles a day and a light rain catches you halfway through.
Wear the bulkier pair on the travel day and pack the slimmer one, stuffed with socks so it keeps its shape. Put each pair in a cloth bag or shower cap so the soles don't mark your clothes. And if rain is in the forecast, make sure at least one pair is leather rather than suede and mesh; it wipes clean and won't stay damp overnight.
1. New Balance 530 Trench Coat Outfit

A trench is the first coat I pack for an autumn city trip, and the 530 is a natural partner because its silver overlays echo the trench's neat, polished feel. A fitted white or cream tee, straight-leg jeans ending near the ankle, and a beige, olive or navy trench cut roomy enough for a sweater underneath. Silver-and-white 530s keep it bright. Crew socks, a structured crossbody and small hoops finish it. For a waist, tie the belt loosely in front or knot it behind your back so it pulls the coat in without a buckle at the front. Most trenches are cotton gabardine, which sheds a light shower but soaks through in steady rain.
2. New Balance 574 Cardigan And Jeans Outfit

A chunky cardigan and jeans is the outfit I'd wear on the morning after a late arrival, when deciding anything feels like too much. An oatmeal, rust or forest-green cardigan over a fitted tank or tee, straight or slim-straight jeans in a medium or dark wash, and gray, navy or burgundy 574s. The shoe's rounded shape stands up to a heavy knit in a way a slim sneaker wouldn't. A leather shoulder bag, small gold jewelry and ribbed socks add some care. Ankle-length jeans keep a petite frame clean; taller or curvier women often prefer a full-length straight cut. Wear the cardigan open, or button it and tuck the front.
3. New Balance 327 Sweater And Midi Skirt Outfit

Want to keep wearing skirts as it gets colder? A midi skirt, a light crewneck and the 327 is how I'd do it. The 327's slim upper and flared sole give a sporty contrast to satin, denim or soft pleats without weighing the skirt down. Two combinations I like: a camel sweater with an ivory skirt and brown sneakers, or charcoal knit with a burgundy skirt and neutral shoes. Ankle socks on warm days, sheer tights when it's cool. The sweater should end near the waistband or get a small front tuck, so the skirt's waist stays visible. A compact shoulder bag and studs finish it for brunch or a museum.
4. New Balance 9060 Blazer And Leggings Outfit

Leggings, a long tee and an oversized blazer are my long-haul travel outfit, and the 9060's thick sole balances the blazer's width. Black or espresso leggings, a long fitted tee and a blazer cut either long enough to cover the hips or boxy and slightly short over high-rise leggings. Gray, cream, black or muted metallic 9060s suit neutral layers. Tall ribbed socks, a big tote and sunglasses finish it. A cap makes it casual; a leather handbag sharpens it. The blazer is the part that matters most, so pick one in a fabric that doesn't crease badly when you sit in it for hours.
5. New Balance 2002R Leather Jacket Outfit

A leather jacket gives the 2002R a harder city edge, and the shoe's suede and mesh keep it from tipping into biker territory. A fitted long-sleeve or fine turtleneck, relaxed cargos or loose straight jeans, and a black, chocolate or deep burgundy leather jacket. Gray, cream or earthy 2002Rs pair well with all three. I keep the jacket at hip length so the outfit has a clear waist. Visible crew socks and a crossbody finish it. Faux leather gives the same look, though it won't soften with wear. For dinner, swap the cargos for tailored trousers and the outfit moves up a notch without changing the shoes.
6. New Balance 550 Rugby Shirt And Trousers Outfit

The 550 is a flat, low leather basketball shoe, and its collegiate look fits preppy layers. A striped rugby shirt with relaxed pleated trousers in navy, tan, charcoal or chocolate, and 550s with white, green, burgundy or navy accents. The trousers should fall close to the top of the shoe without covering it. A tee underneath and a light wool coat handle cold mornings. If wide trousers swamp you, a straight or slightly tapered cut keeps the same feel. A canvas tote, leather belt and simple watch finish it. Because the 550 is leather, it's also the pair on this list I'd trust most on a damp day.
7. New Balance 1906R Barn Jacket Outfit

A barn jacket is traditional outerwear, and the 1906R's metallic, technical look brings it into the present. Waxed cotton, canvas or quilted, in olive, tan, navy or dark brown, over a striped long-sleeve or a light gray sweater with dark straight jeans. Silver, cream or muted green 1906Rs add a modern note without fighting the jacket. Textured socks, a suede tote and a soft scarf when it's cold. One roll at the jean hem gives a cleaner break, especially on a petite frame. Keep the layer underneath fitted so the boxy jacket keeps some shape. Waxed cotton handles drizzle well, which suits unpredictable city weather.
8. New Balance 990v6 Knit Dress And Coat Outfit

A ribbed knit dress with sneakers is easy to sightsee in and still fine for a nicer lunch. A midi in black, heather gray, camel or deep plum, a long wool-blend coat, and the 990v6. Gray pairs give a tonal look; navy or cream add a little contrast. Crew socks close to the dress color make the hem-to-shoe gap look deliberate. A structured handbag and quiet jewelry keep it refined. Choose a dress that skims the body without clinging, or a relaxed column if you'll be layering; tight knit rides up when you walk. A belt adds definition if you want it.
9. New Balance 740 Hoodie And Track Pants Outfit

A matching athletic set looks planned when the colors line up and the fit is clean. The 740, with its layered 2000s-runner look, suits straight-leg track pants, a fitted tee and a zip hoodie in navy, chocolate, gray or deep green. Silver or white sneakers add contrast against the darker set. Keep the pants long enough to reach the shoe without bunching. A light puffer vest adds warmth without limiting your arms. If matching sets feel too sporty, neutral track pants with a striped knit polo is the grown-up version. It's an airport and long-walk outfit through and through.
10. New Balance 1000 Bomber Jacket And Mini Skirt Outfit

A mini skirt and an oversized bomber is a play on proportions, and the chunky 1000 holds the bottom of the outfit down. Opaque black tights, a denim, cord or pleated mini, and a fitted turtleneck to balance the bomber's volume. Silver, gray or neutral sneakers suit it. Tall socks pulled over the tights link the skirt to the shoe. Keep the bag compact and the jewelry minimal; the jacket is already big enough. An above-the-knee A-line skirt or a skort gives more coverage with the same formula. A bomber in olive, brown, navy or burgundy brings the fall color.
11. New Balance 530 Monochrome Gray Outfit

An all-gray outfit is the easiest thing to pack, and gray 530s anchor it. Charcoal wide-leg sweatpants or knit pants, a heather-gray crewneck sweatshirt, and a lighter gray tee peeking out at the neck and hem. Those slight shade changes are what keep a monochrome outfit from looking flat. A long black or charcoal coat adds structure, with silver jewelry, a black tote and crisp white socks. Balance the shape with fitted pants under an oversized top or relaxed pants with a shorter sweatshirt. Gray holds up beautifully under cloudy light, but stick to one fabric texture per piece so it doesn't look like loungewear.
12. Red New Balance Sneakers Denim Outfit

A red or burgundy sneaker can lead an outfit if everything else stays quiet. Straight-leg jeans, a white tee and a medium-wash denim jacket, with the washes slightly different so the denim doesn't look like a set. A dark indigo chore coat is a cleaner option than the jacket. Repeat the sneaker color once in something small, a hair clip, a scarf or a bag detail, and stop there; a second bold color pulls focus. Cream socks soften the red and feel more autumnal than bright white. It's a cheerful choice for early-fall sightseeing.
13. New Balance 574 Corduroy Pants Outfit

Corduroy and the 574 share a soft, matte texture, which is why they look so natural together. Straight or wide-leg cords in chocolate, rust, olive or camel with a cream cable knit. Gray or beige 574s keep it soft; burgundy or navy add contrast. Let the cords graze the shoe rather than pool. A quilted vest goes over the sweater on cold mornings, with a suede or leather bag. Heavy cable knit can look bulky under a vest, so a fitted merino sweater and a scarf is the slimmer alternative. Adjust for your shape with the pant rise and sweater length. I'd wear it for a long leaf-peeping walk through a park.
14. New Balance 327 Puffer Jacket Outfit

When it's genuinely cold, a cropped puffer keeps you warm without the bulk of a full-length one. High-rise wide-leg jeans or utility pants, a fitted long-sleeve top and a hip-length or cropped puffer in cream, taupe, navy or forest green. Neutral 327s keep it understated; a patterned pair adds personality. A knit beanie and thick crew socks make it winter-ready. If a cropped jacket feels too short, a longer puffer with side vents still lets you walk at a normal stride. Keep the layers under the puffer slim, or the jacket won't zip comfortably and you'll look twice your size.
15. New Balance 9060 Maxi Skirt Outfit

A maxi skirt and a 9060 sound like an odd couple, but the skirt's length softens the shoe's bulk. A denim, cargo or simple column maxi, a fitted crewneck or tucked long-sleeve tee, and an oversized denim jacket, cropped utility coat or relaxed blazer. Cream, gray or taupe 9060s keep it from looking heavy at the bottom. A back or side slit is essential for walking. Ribbed socks, a medium shoulder bag and simple earrings finish it. If you're petite, an ankle-length skirt that shows more of the shoe keeps the outfit from swallowing you.
Letting a Loud Pair Lead
Bright and metallic sneakers are everywhere this fall, and they're easier to wear than people expect, as long as the shoes are the only loud thing in the outfit. This is how I approach the main ones:
- Red and burgundy: pair with denim, navy, gray and cream. Burgundy is the easier of the two in fall because it sits with brown and camel too.
- Green: forest and olive sneakers suit rust, cream and khaki. Bright green is harder and works best with plain black or white.
- Metallic silver: treat it like a neutral. It goes with gray, black and denim, and it looks especially good with silver jewelry.
- Patterned or multi-color: keep everything else to two colors, ideally pulled from the shoe itself.
In photos, a bright pair draws the eye straight down, which you might like or not. If you'd rather people look at your face, keep the loud color for a scarf and wear neutral shoes instead.
Pack the Coat First, Then the Shoes
The fall sneaker outfits that work best keep you warm, let you walk all day and get the proportions right. Trench coats, blazers, leather jackets, knit dresses, tailored trousers, skirts, denim and matching sets all pair with the right New Balance model. Start with one pair that fits your wardrobe and build around the colors you already wear most, whether that's gray, camel, olive, burgundy, navy or chocolate. You don't need a new closet to make this work. Small changes in sock color, hem length, coat and bag change the whole outfit, and comfort beats everything else on a day spent on your feet.
